Atlantic Challenge Cup

Letter from Rob Johnson, BCA It is hard to believe we are entering our fourth year of the Atlantic Challenge Cup. It seems like just yesterday we were on a call with the European Pocket Billiard Federation discussing how to bring this event to life. In such short time, the Atlantic Challenge Cup has become so much more than just a three-day competition. At its foundation, the Atlantic Challenge Cup is an exciting partnership between the Billiard Congress of America and the European Pool and Billiard Federation with the intent of providing another top-tier event to showcase our very talented junior pool players and to generate further interest in the game among today’s youth. This event is not possible without the support of many individuals who are committed to giving back to our junior players. How lucky is Team USA to have BCA Hall of Famer Allison Fisher dedicating countless hours to work with the team? And, how about Tomas Birkmanis returning to the US again as captain of Team Europe? For those of you for helping bring this event to life we can’t thank you enough. This includes those assisting Allison and Tomas and, of course, the parents of this special group of junior pool players. We have seen tremendous play and, more importantly, great sportsmanship throughout this event. While the goal is to win the Atlantic Challenge Cup, our teams and everyone associated with this event are rewarded with new friendships, lessons on how to deal with incredible pressure and expectations, and the unknown. In the end, everyone associated with this event comes away better off for having been involved in the Atlantic Challenge Cup. This event would be impossible without the support of the many partners of the Atlantic Challenge Cup. They come together to back our mission of promoting this wonderful game to a new generation of players. To the players on both teams, congratulations for your accomplishments to date and for being selected as one of just a handful of players to compete in this prestigious event. What a great opportunity to be young ambassadors of the beautiful game of pool! The future of the game is bright.

Atlantic Challenge Cup

Letter from the Team USA Captain It is huge honor for me to be chosen as the Atlantic Challenge Cup’s Team USA captain. As soon as it was announced, my very first call was to my old friend and former Mosconi Cup Team USA captain, Mark Wilson. Mark and I go way back to when we both competed in the very first Mosconi Cup. Before I could even ask him if he would be interested, he was already volunteering his time and facilities. We are fortunate to have Mark offer his expertise to help coach this team. We’ve taught together for many years and he helps me with my game whenever I’ve asked. I don’t think you could have a better pairing of coaches. As for our message to Team USA, we are extremely excited to see what you can accomplish at the 2018 Atlantic Challenge Cup! This team has been carefully selected to represent the USA. Your skills and ability on the pool table, the way we’ve seen you handle pressure and how you conduct yourselves off the table were all taken into consideration. You are not only a great example to all players young and old but you are ambassadors for this great game. Pool players, fans and spectators from all over the world will be watching you represent your country. The key to doing well in this event is to support each other no matter what. It is inevitable that you or your teammate will miss a shot or make a mistake. This is when the team must remain positive and always lift each other up. Working together is part of what makes this event so special. There is going to be a different kind of pressure playing in this format and we must all have each other’s backs. As Mark constantly remains us, “relentless positivity prevails!” I know everyone has worked very hard and I am certain you will make a formidable team to compete against. Playing in the Atlantic Challenge Cup, like playing in the Mosconi Cup is different than any other pool playing experience. The pressure of representing your country and performing well for your team simply cannot be replicated anywhere else in our sport. One major asset to set you apart from your competition as an elite pool player is your mental toughness. The single best weapon that you can bring to the table is your mind. Mark and I have done everything we can to prepare you for this event, stay focused, stay positive, and be the teammate we believe that you already are! Mark and I know you are ready to embrace this next challenge.

Letter from Team EU Captain It’s amazing how far my pool career has taken me. Over 20 years ago when I was still a student fascinated with snooker on the television, I decided it would be fun to enter my first local pool tournament. Although I didn’t do very well at that first tournament, I knew that I had discovered a new passion. As I played in more tournaments both locally and nationally, my dedication and commitment to this sport only grew stronger. Eventually, I became a referee and worked at various pool events across the country. Then one day I gave a few lessons to some kids playing in our local pool room and realized I was also a pretty good coach. But everything changed when one of my students made it the European Championship Finals! I realized at that moment that having my students win tournaments was as rewarding, if not more, than my own personal victories on the pool table. When I joined the EPBF a little more than 2 years ago, I did so because I wanted to be a part of something bigger in the billiard world and I wanted to make a positive impact in the industry. Since then, I have become the Youth Director for the EPBF and have been a part of two winning Atlantic Challenge Cup teams. I am living my dream of contributing and giving back to this great sport. In 2016, when I debuted as Team Europe’s captain for the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Chicago I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew we had talented players, but for many of them it was the first time traveling to the United States. There was just a sense of us going into the unknown. I wanted our team to stay relaxed and have fun and ultimately, we succeeded. It was a summer we will always remember because winning such a prestigious event like the Atlantic Challenge Cup is certainly a special achievement. For me, the importance of the Atlantic Challenge Cup is immeasurable. It raises the awareness of this great game and it brings youth pool to a whole new level. This event definitely provides extra motivation and incentive for the kids to practice and achieve more than they ever could have imagined. Although Europe has managed to win the past three Atlantic Challenge Cups, it is meaningless for this year’s team. This is a new year with a new team and the motivation for Team USA to win is likely to be at the peak. It will not be easy, but Team Europe will be ready for the challenge.

The Team Captains may not use the same pairing twice. There are seven doubles matches and a possible 12 different pairings. REFEREES The 2018 Atlantic Challenge Cup will be officiated by Dwayne Payne of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Genaro Vasquez of Minneapolis, Minnesota. SHOT CLOCK There is a 25 + 10 seconds shot clock on all shots. Only exception to this after the break shot where 60 seconds are given with a warning after 50 seconds. In team and doubles play, only the shooter at the table may ask for an extension. Each player/pair can ask for an extension of 25 seconds once per frame but only the player at the table may call an extension during the match. A referee will always confirm the extension, if the player does not hear confirmation they must state clearly again to the referee and receive confirmation. The referee has the power to stop the clock. This is in the event of any extraordinary occurrence, for example, a player playing out of turn in the doubles or team matches. The match will then recommence with the referee stating “start the clock.” The clock will not be reset, it will continue from when it was stopped. TIME OUTS Each player is allowed one 5-minute time out, regardless of length of match race. The Team Captain may suggest a time out be taken, but it must be requested by the player(s).
