DON'T FORGET THE BACK!

COLOR WHEEL The color wheel illustrates the primary, secondary, and tertiary (mixed from primary and secondary) colors and how all colors can be mixed from the primary colors. Colors opposite each other on the wheel are called complements (for example, yellow and purple). Those adjacent to the complement are called split-complemen ts (for example, yellow, redpurple, and blue-purple). Colors adjacent to the split are called triads (for example, yellow, red, and blue). Complements, split-complements, and triads are often used in the color schemes in this book. Leave bare to show off the stone

You can't go wrong with a circle

Color surrounds us and plays a vital part in our lives. When using color it’s helpful to know some basic color theory, as well as the meaning of colors, so you can consciously choose colors to achieve certain effects or evoke certain responses.

As stones are three-dimensional, the back is just as important as the front. With some designs, you will need to decide how you will finish the back before you start. Here are just a few ideas to play with.

1 Paint a deep red background and leave to dry. Mix a range of nine colors from green, through turquoise, to blue. Place a large green dot in the center. Surround it with sixteen equally spaced dots in the same green. Use the next color for the next row. Repeat for nine rows, gradually increasing in size.

3 For row 10, paint large dots every other space in blue, then paint large dots in the remaining spaces in turquoise, leaving space for two rows of tiny dots.

2 Create a lighter set of the nine colors by mixing a little of each with white. Use a tiny nail-art dotter to place a ring of dots around each dot on rows 8 and 9 with the lighter version of those colors.

See page 10 for how to grade colors into required number of steps.

4 Take the lighter versions of and create two rows of tiny each of those colors dots using the corresponding colors. around each one To add some variety, reduce the size of the dots toward the sides.

5 By this time the main dots should be dry. Create a second layer of dots in the corresponding lighter colors using tools small enough to show the original layer of color.

7 Paint two more rows of dots around the large pink dots, one in the lighter turquoise and one in white. You may need to turn the stone upside down to work on the edge of the design.

6 Paint a turquoise dot on the outside of each blue dot. Create a medium-siz ed pink dot on the outside of the large turquoise dots. Then paint large pink dots outside the small turquoise dots. Surround the smaller pink dot with a row of green dots, decreasing in size, and the large pink dot with a row of turquoise dots, decreasing in size.

8 Build up layers of decreasing -sized dots in contrasting colors on top of the central circle and the last two rows of dots. Add a small white finishing dot to the last three rows of the blue and green dots.
