‘BBH Mag’ Editorial

NEW Co-Op TO OPEN THIS MONTH It has taken rather longer than expected, but, at the time we went to press, the ‘BBH Mag’ was told that the new Co-Op will open in the new Neighbourhood Centre on 9th September. The new store will join a Vetenary Surgery and Dentists which have both recently opened at the centre. There are also plans for a children’s nursery, but we understand that the opening date for this has been delayed.

OUR VERY BEST WISHES TO THESE NEW BUSINESSES IN THE VILLAGE. The BBH Mag is keen to support these new businesses which, it is hoped, will help to make Broadbridge Heath an even better place to live. YOUR VIEWS: What do you think of the new Neighbourhood Centre? Do you like the new shops? Let us know what you think; and tell us if you would like us to include your views in our letters page next month. Write to the Editor by email at

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows During the summer term lockdown we have meet the rainbows online for a scavenger hunt and a participation story. During this time our girls have been using their time wisely! Between 3 girls they have earned 5 interest badges, 6 skills builders, 11 theme awards and their gold awards. As soon as we were given permission from Girlguiding we held an outdoor meeting with all the girls moving up to brownies in September to give them all their badges, their pot of gold and to say goodbye.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies Whilst we have been in lockdown and not able to meet face to face we have been running online meetings with the Brownies. We have been continuing with the Guiding programme, with some adjustments to enable the girls to complete their theme award work and have added a couple of challenge badges as well. The girls enjoyed the Science experiments we conducted with some very pleasing results and we even managed to have a remote sleepover and campfire sing song 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides We have a couple of times online with the guides, for a scavenger hunt and a quiz night both of which were well attended. We organised a virtual camp for the girls – Knights Adventure. To add a little adventure to the camp the girls were encouraged to sleep anywhere other than their bed. The girls enjoyed making knight costumes, baking bread, building castles, learning how to play draughts, riding hobby horses and potato jousting all in their own homes.

Hello Residents of Broadbridge Heath, I Hope you have all been keeping well in these strange times? I wanted to remind you that I am here to help as you and make you aware that post our merger with Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, and the team at Age UK Horsham District is continuing to offer information and advice, helping older people with finance, housing, health, welfare and benefits queries. We have also been offering telephone support to those facing isolation and loneliness, doorstep deliveries of essentials such as food and medication and help in the home to those most vulnerable, such as those returning home from hospital, or those unable to carry out household tasks. As we move forward and restrictions are starting to ease, we are acutely aware of the challenges older people are facing. Older people who have been isolating and shielding are starting to venture outside for the first time since March, but many are extremely anxious about the impact of returning to life outside of their home. We are here for you, if you or anyone you know might benefit from our support and would like to talk to myself or our team about any of our activities or services as restrictions ease, please visit www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk or call us on 01403 260560. BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club Since last month we have been allowed to open the doors of the pavilion to the public welcoming back old and new members. We've also started football training and pre-season friendlies albeit behind closed doors but unfortunately we still don't know when our league season will start although the draw for the FA Cup, FA Vase and FA Youth Cups have been made. In the Emirates FA Cup we will play Raynes Park Vale at home on Tuesday 1st September, in the Buildbase FA Vase we will play Lydd Town away on Saturday 19th September and in the FA Youth Cup, the first time the club has ever entered the competition, we will play away to Eastbourne Town, win every game and you'll see us playing at Wembley next May. At the time of writing the government and the Football Association have still not given the go ahead for supporters at our games but hopefully a decision on that will be made in time for our FA Cup match because without fans, even at our level it's just not the same. Elsewhere around the club approx 30 volunteers gave up their Saturday afternoon to help prepare the ground for the new season, this involved various tasks from cleaning and disinfecting the seating in the stands, clearing dead leaves out of the gutters, cleaning the shutters, weeding, etc. Afterwards we all enjoyed a BBQ and beverage as we put the world to rights sitting outside on a warm summer's evening. We still have no date for when the renovation work on the outside pitches will commence, this has now been dragging on for months but we are hopeful that work will start soon. Should supporters be allowed back into grounds there are a few games to consider: Tuesday 25th August, Friendly, Home v Charlton U19s, Kick Off 7.30 Saturday 29th August , Friendly, Home v Banstead, Kick off 3.00 Tuesday 1st September, FA CUP, Home v Raynes Park Vale, Kick Off 7.30 To find out more about Broadbridge Heath Football Club, please check out our website at https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club, Byfleets Lane. I said in an earlier edition that I hoped that the village sports clubs had some better news for readers next time and much has indeed happened regarding recreational sport since then – most of it unexpected. In particular, the news for cricket was that clubs were able to start playing cricket matches again wef July – but under very strict playing conditions. Those mandated covid arrangements put a lot of responsibility and demands on clubs and for those clubs of our size those demands are not easily managed. However, we and the vast majority of the rest of cricket clubs in Sussex now have the necessary arrangements in place and, after a couple of warm-up friendlies, a competitive August Cup was arranged by the League and started on the 2nd of August with over 300 teams. So, our 1st XI have now played two high scoring matches and unfortunately lost them both - but they were very close. In the last match, a total of over 500 runs were scored and Goring scored the winning run off the last ball with their last two batters at the wicket. Remaining 1st XI matches in the August Cup are: 15th – 1st XI home to Rustington 22nd – 1st XI home to Littlehampton IIs 29th – 1st XI away to Steyning IIs Meanwhile, despite covid, our membership has remained strong enough for two weekend teams so we have been able to play some 2nd XI matches too - although they are playing mostly away at the moment. Also, mid-week T20s have also started with the Sussex Slam where we have beaten Warnham but lost closely to Slinfold. Meanwhile, there are two negative things I have to report. Firstly, it’s the continued misuse of the Top Common when we are not around. Whether it’s dog mess, bottles, cans or bonfires, they all leave their mark for us to clear up and it’s not pleasant.

Secondly, the increase in the rabbit population is fast making the outfield unsuitable for play. Some mornings the outfield looks like a battle field with over 50 dug holes which one of us then has to go round and fill before each match – about 2 hours work. Whilst we can just about cope with the issue for the remainder of this season, we are in discussion with the Parish Council about finding a solution to enable us (and perhaps the football club) to play there in safety next year. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath The church is open for private prayer. The Church continues to be alive and active, and we’re delighted to say that our church building is open for private, silent prayer on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 1pm to 2pm on each of these days. Sunday services

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic our Sunday morning services are running as a single combined service using the Zoom videoconference service; not in the church building. We email the congregation each weekend to remind everyone of the details to access the services via Zoom. Everything runs much like it did before - there's music, prayer, a reading, worship, a sermon, interaction and a chance for everyone to chat at the end of the service. If you would like to join us for these online services you are welcome to email the church office office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk and you will be sent details. We have a separate video conference for the children and youth, and they can join the main service as usual at the end. You can listen to previous services on our Sermons page at https://stjohnsbbh.org.uk/church-life/sermons-archive/

Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Carter Drive, Beale Close, Clybouw Avenue, Smith Road, Staples Close, Brown Close

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. The new Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath,

What is your image of God? I want to suggest that the quality and purpose of your life will be coloured by this – the framework of your very existence. Do you see him as a judge? You will constantly feel guilty. If you see him as a disappointed parent – you will always be trying to please him, doing things to gain value and affirmation from him. Or do you see him seeking the lost, always actively seeking out his people who he loves? Always seeking your presence, your time, your love. In the bible, the Pharisees and teachers of the law often assumed that their religious practices and good behaviour secured good favour with God and those that didn’t follow their practices were unworthy. A key phrase in scripture is repentance (metanoia) – and we often use it to mean to be saved, but it means much more – it means a radical change of mind – a change in our image of who God is. The Pharisees didn’t seem to know who God was or what their own value was to God. Do we know our own value? Because that is the ultimate deception of the devil and is what keeps us from knowing God. Knowing how much God loves us. What value do you place on yourself and on others? You are priceless to God and he will do anything to find you! You cannot alter the value God places on you, it is already infinite – so stop trying! Stop comparing yourself to others – they are no more or less valuable than you. The problem is that our culture evaluates individuals very differently to how God does. We assign value and significance to things and people in a fairly random way. We give certain people special treatment. Think about what has value in our culture? Power, influence, wealth, celebrity? Would we behave differently if we met a celebrity this afternoon? And how do we treat those that society deems less valuable than us? Our culture decides what has value and what doesn’t. And it is easy therefore to value some people more highly than others and often to value ourselves less than others. 13

But my challenge is that either we believe God about our value, or we end up trusting our culture and those around us to establish our individual worth. We assign value to things which God doesn’t do. We judge others according to our own market value. We assign them a low value but overlook the fact that they have a meaning to God of infinite value. But our stock doesn’t go up or down like market value. We assume God loves people the way we do because we think there is a finite amount of love (like money). But God is not limited in his love! There is enough for everyone. Because God is love! So what is your picture of God? He puts immeasurable value in you! He would and has gone to the ends of the earth to find you! We are his! And so it’s time for us to realise that, to stop seeking to improve our stock and our value by trying to please him or others, because we can’t improve our stock any more than it already is! Start to live in the knowledge that God loves you and he wants you to rejoice in the unconditional love he has for you. And try to see others like that too. See others as having an infinite worth. Don’t expect them to have to prove themselves to you. And in that we can truly demonstrate God’s love for one another. Mark Lavender. ————————————————————————————————-

Our virtual coffee mornings have progressed to meeting in person in very small groups in our gardens. We’re able to keep our distance and we have lots of safety measures in place, including bringing our own coffee and cake (some of us have been known to turn up with Prosecco, G&T or Pimm’s so we have a jolly time!) Of course, the wonderful weather helps. We are now looking at other ways of staying in touch so watch this space…. I always try to be positive on this page but while meeting face to face is such a pleasure, we aren’t complacent. We can learn a lot from mistakes that were made during the ‘Spanish flu’ pandemic of 1918. Over 500 million people were infected, and more people died than all those killed during World War I. Perhaps the most important lesson from what happened in 1918 is that cases of Spanish flu dropped off over the summer, and by August it was hoped the virus had run its course. However, it was only the calm before the storm and the second wave was far more serious. Hospitals were soon overwhelmed and, although the government was advised that a strict lockdown was the only way to limit the spread, they decided it was more important to keep munitions factories open and civilians at work - because the needs of warfare justified the consequences of spreading the infection. A year later, the government’s Principal Medical Officer advised people to stay home, saying that many lives would have been saved if lockdown had been imposed. With 2 more spikes, the pandemic lasted for two years. History tells us that we may have a long way to go - but it also provides an opportunity to learn what we all need to do to end the spread of this virus more quickly. Stay safe.

News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath We hope that you have enjoyed the summer and had a chance to get a proper break. You will have noticed that the Neighbourhood Centre is now very near completion. At the time of writing the new vets and dentist had already opened, with the Co-op and new nursery due to open very soon. We welcome these new businesses to the village and it has been good to see residents already making use of them. The major highways works to downgrade the former A281 are now complete but there are a number of remedial works, most notably the verges, that remain to be done. We were pleased to meet with the Highways project manager for the scheme over the summer to discuss these outstanding issues. We were also able to discuss the issue of some HGVs still attempting to use this road and then becoming stuck, as some of you will have witnessed. Sat Nav systems have been updated and there has been increased signage, but Highways are also looking at whether additional measures may be required. Now that the project is complete, we are keen to see a review of the impact of the works. This includes looking at the speed and volume of traffic throughout the village. Highways have confirmed that this review will take place once it is deemed that traffic has returned to its pre Covid levels. This is likely to be either this Autumn or next Spring. We particularly want to see all the roads in the village at 20 mph and will be campaigning for this, along with the potential need for additional traffic calming, as part of that review. We recently had two fairly large planning applications for just outside the BBH boundary come up at Planning Committee. Both were for retirement communities, one on land at Lyons Farm and one on land at Wellcross Farm. For various reasons we were unhappy with these proposals, most notably concerns about further expansion of the BBH built-up boundary, lack of affordable units and lack of access to amenities. We were pleased that both applications were refused and you can find more details on the HDC website. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk

Dear Residents In line with changing government guidelines, we were able to re-open our 4 play areas in July. We carried out risk assessments and full safety/operational checks prior to opening and have installed new signage to reflect the guidelines on usage. The re-opening of the adult fitness equipment at the Village Centre and Charrington Way followed. We have also installed signage advising users of the current usage guidelines. ` Whilst we continue to monitor government guidelines for any changes, we respectfully ask that anyone using the play areas, fitness equipment and open spaces, does so with thought and consideration for others, for the safety of all. All residents are welcome to join our Parish Council meetings which are held monthly – details can be found on our website. Meetings are currently being held over Zoom – joining details can be obtained from the Clerk. Lucinda Edwards, Clerk.

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Do I need life cover? Coronavirus has for many people brought home the importance of life cover. As a result they are now reviewing their insurance policies. But what cover do we really need and how much? How much money would your family need to maintain their standard of living, if you died, or if a serious illness left you unable to work? Once you know what they’d need, you might insure for a lump sum that would be able to repay debts, or fund a certain level of income. A cost-effective option can be a Family Income Benefit policy, which pays out a regular income on your death for the remainder of a selected term. This means that each year you survive, the total that is paid out will reduce. For example if you were to cover yourself for £1,000 per month of Family Income Benefit for twenty years, and you died at the end of year two, it would pay out £1,000pm for the remaining eighteen years (a total of £216,000). If you died in year ten it would only pay out about £120,000 over the next ten years. Because the cover decreases over time, it is cheaper than a fixed lump sum. T he two main types of sickness cover are Critical Illness insurance, which pays out a lump sum if you suffer one of a predefined list of conditions, and Income Replacement which provides an ongoing income if you’re unable to work due to sickness after a pre-agreed period of time. Whilst Income Replacement policies can only replace a proportion of your income, you’re covered for all illness that affects your ability to work, whereas Critical Illnesses are more specific. Stress and back pain are not considered to be Critical Illness although they’re a common problem. For many people, the ideal solution is a combination of one or more of these policies, and a review can help work out how to do this most cost effectively.
