News from Shelley School

The building work at Shelley Primary School has been making exceptional progress over the past few months. We would like to thank local residents for their patience whilst this has been taking place. After half term, much of the work will be complete and the children will be able to take full advantage of the improvements. Our year 5 and 6 pupils will be moving to their new purpose built classrooms and all pupils will be able to use the new ‘Daily Mile’ track as pictured below.

One of our new rooms is a Community Room, which in the future, can be used by various community groups as a meeting space. A full virtual tour of the school premises will be available to view on the school website in November for parents of those children potentially starting with us in 2021 and anybody else that would like to have a look! 7

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows With only one damp evening so far this term the girls have been busy learning about all the different sections in Girlguiding, whom to trust if they get lost and playing games based on picking up litter and coral fish. 2nd BBH Brownies The Brownies are still continuing in a virtual capacity at the moment. We have said goodbye to some of our older girls and welcomed several new girls both from Rainbows and off our waiting list. This term we are continuing with some theme award work and are currently completing our Astronauts Paw Print which is proving to be quite fun! 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides So far we have been very lucky with the weather for our outdoor meetings. The girls have completed their geocaching badge by geocaching around Chesworth Farm and created geocaching trials for each other to find. During the rest of the month we will be looking at map symbols and morse code.

No yeast bread rolls Preheat a fan oven to 200°. Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin. In a large bowl, mix together: 2 cups self-raising flour, 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise. Spoon the mixture into the prepared muffin tin and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes in the pan then remove to a wire rack. Serve warm with butter. I halved this recipe so we had 6 fresh warm little rolls ready in the time it took me to make a salad – Enjoy. SEPTEMBER WAS A FIZZ! “What can we do over Zoom? This was the conversation over a social distancing coffee morning with some of our committee members. Then came the brain wave...BATH BOMBS... Hosted by our very own craft-savvy Secretary, Jo, we followed her step by step instructions and made fabulous fizzing bath bombs which filled our kitchens, offices and spare rooms with the heady scents of lavender and orange. The ingredients could be found in the baking cupboard or on the supermarket shelves or online.

Ingredients for 5 medium sized bath bombs; Dry ingredients; 200g baking soda 100g citric acid 100g cornflour 100g salts (sea salt, Epsom salt or dead sea salt)

Wet ingredients; 2.5 tbsp oil (any base oil like olive oil, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil and rapeseed oil work well) 1 tsp/5ml of sweet orange/lavender oil Other equipment: 5 moulds 2 mixing bowels

Method; 1. Mix all the dry ingredients together VERY WELL – for at least 5 minutes. 2. IN a separate container, mix all the wet ingredients together 3. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixing thoroughly with your hands to make a wet sand consistency that will stick together. 4. When the mixture sticks together when squished, pack it into your moulds. If you wait too long the mixture will start to harden. 5. Leave to dry for 24-48 hours then store in an airtight package. It was great fun making them together, even if it was over Zoom, but it wasn't compulsory. Some of our members joined in the meeting for the catch up at the beginning then disappeared, and some stayed on to watch us make our fizzy creations. One thing that was for sure, we all had a giggle and came away feeling lighter which is what we all need in these times of uncertainty

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club Our season continues at the moment, although most people are of the impression that it could soon come to a stop with the number of COVID-19 cases on the increase. The bar and pavilion are open most evenings and as well as SKY Sports we also have BT Sports so if you want to find comfortable venue to sit down to watch that special Premier Division or Champions League football match, then come on down, club membership is only ÂŁ5 and that will take you through until 31st May 2021. We also hire out the venue to local community groups so if you want to participate in any of the following, ENCORE Vocal Group, Tuesdays 10.00 - 12.00 (all welcome), KDF Dance Saturday mornings or Bounce & Burn Monday and Wednesday at 6.00, then please let me know and I'll put you in touch. On the football front the attendance at matches has increased on previous years, probably due to supporter's not being allowed to attend matches at National league level and above but that's good news for clubs at our level. In the league after a slow start, the first team won 3 home games on the trot 4-1 at home to East Preston and AFC Uckfield who at the time were division leaders, then a 1-0 victory against Hassocks. Last Tuesday we were on the wrong end of a thriller at Alfold losing by 5-4 in a game that had everything, goals, dubious penalty awarded, another penalty claim ignored, twice hitting the woodwork, goal disallowed for offside, two players scoring hat-tricks, a red card and some really entertaining football played by both sides. Unfortunately for Heath we seemed to be at the wrong end of most decisions but as they say it will even out by the end of the season. Some news on the outside pitch renovation work mentioned in previous editions, the contractor has returned to do some work, scarifying the area, grass seeding and fertiliser, not as much work as we'd have liked but we'll wait to see if any more work is planned before winter sets in. All very frustrating for the club but at least the District Council have allowed our seniors and juniors to use the old stadium pitch for the time being. The club are currently seeking volunteers at all levels to join us, so if you can spare some time don't be shy, please get in touch and join our merry band. Our next matches of interest are: Sat 22th Oct Home v Lancing K.O. 3.00 Tues 27th Oct Away v Crawley Down, K.O. 7.30 Sat 31st Oct Home v Langney Wanderers or Eastbourne United K.O. 3.00 12

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB

I believe this is the 50th article I have done for this village magazine and it comes just as Storm Barbara is passing over the south east. Suffice to say that there’s not too much for me to say about local cricket at the moment. After much work done by our volunteers, the ground has now been repaired and reseeded from which new grass will hopefully then appear ready for the spring. We are very fortunate in that we have our own machinery which therefore makes planning so much easier. We are also lucky in that when the machinery goes wrong we have a member (Nathan Booker) who is a whizz with fixing things. Every club needs people like Nathan! Normally we would now be making plans for the indoor league in Crawley and Indoor net practice at the Country Ground, Hove. However, obviously such plans are now on-hold. I hope to have better news on those soon. Colin Case —————————————————————————————————————-

LIGHT UP YOUR WINDOWS FOR ADVENT THIS DECEMBER! You an join members of St John’s church for some pre-Christmas cheer as they turn their front room windows into a village advent calendar.

The Christmas story will be revealed in windows from the 1st to the 24th December. If you would like to take part contact the church by email at office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk …. Or ask at the church. 13

St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath The Church continues to be alive and active! Our church building is open for private, silent prayer on Mondays from 1-2pm as well as hosting a number of online courses. One of these is the Alpha course which anyone is welcome to attend – see posters for details and email the church office to register your interest. No previous church attendance required! Sunday services

We are pleased to announce that some of our services have returned to the church building. We have a weekly communion service at 8am followed by an informal contemporary service at 10:30am. Clearly there is a restriction on numbers due to the need to abide by social distancing regulations, however we can accommodate up to 36 individuals and booking is via the church office. Our 10:30am service is also streamed via the Zoom videoconference service; and there is the opportunity to meet others as well as receive prayer via breakout rooms at the end. If you would like to join us for these online services you are welcome to email the church office office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk and you will be sent details. Once a month (on the first Sunday) we also produce a reflective service which is streamed on our Youtube channel, or which can be found on our Facebook page. You can listen to any previous services on our Sermons page at https://stjohnsbbh.org.uk/church-life/sermons-archive/ We have also restarted some children’s work. On the 1st Sunday of the month at 10.30 am we will meet in the church hall, and on the 3rd Sunday of the month we will be hosting a ‘families walking church’ – meeting outside church at 3pm. Again, if you would like to join this please contact the church office in advance. Events for your diary We anticipate organising two Remembrance events in November. On 1st November there will be the opportunity to remember loved ones who have died during the year through a simple service of reflection and on 8th November we still hope to conduct a formal Remembrance service around the Village Memorial. Details to follow. Also, look out for a life-size village advent calendar as we approach December! Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Scholars Walk, Longhurst Avenue, Highwood Crescent, Farriers Walk, Arundale Walk, The Boulevard, Gatehouse Mews, Highwood Mill. 14

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath. Over the next couple of months, we will ‘celebrate’ a number of key events which are traditionally opportunities to gather together as a community and yet in the current environment we need to think more carefully about how we do such things. As a church we want to offer some opportunities to both remember our loved-ones and celebrate the coming festive season. Remembering and Remembrance We will be conducting a very brief Remembrance ceremony at the village memorial at 10:45am on Sunday 8th November where invited dignitaries and uniformed groups will gather to lay wreaths and we will observe a minute’s silence for those who have fallen. Also, as so many of us know someone who has died during the past year, St John’s would like to offer the opportunity for anyone in the community to remember a loved one by sending us their name and we will light a candle for them and read out their name as part of a roll-call in a short pre-recorded service which will then be streamed on 8th November via Youtube. You will also have the opportunity to collect the candle afterwards from the church porch. Through this act we want to enable those in our community to have the opportunity to remember those that we have lost in the past year, to celebrate their life and to know the hope that we can have in Jesus Christ. If you would like a loved-one remembered personally in our service, simply email our church office at: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk and let us know the full name of the person by Friday 6th November. Advent Calendar Trail Each day during December join us around the village as the Christmas Nativity story will be revealed in a new window from the 1st-24th. Positioned in different homes around Broadbridge Heath will be 24 different advent calendar-style window displays. See if you can spot them all! Maps will be available on our Facebook page, St. John’s church website and the church notice board. Christingle It will be unlikely that this year we will be able to hold our annual Christingle service, however, we would like to offer the opportunity to still either make a Christingle at home, or to use the space in our church hall to build your own. On Monday and Tuesday 21st and 22nd December from 10am until 12 we will be handing out Christingle kits from the church building to either take away or to make in church where we will have a demonstration, Christmas carols hopefully mince pies!

News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath Since our update last month, HDC planning and WSCC Highways have met to discuss the issues relating to the downgraded bypass (C622). We attended that meeting, along with the County Councillor for BBH, to represent the views of residents. It was agreed that a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to make the use of the C622 by HGVs illegal (except for access) was the preferred option and most likely to resolve the issue. The process towards this in now underway, with HDC instructing designers to provide a quote for the works. Since it is likely to be up to a year before a full TRO can be in place, they are also looking at the option of a temporary TRO to bridge the gap. We will keep you updated on this. HDC are also looking at options to close the entrance into the Co-op car park that comes off the paved bus gate and is currently being used illegally by some drivers. Having spoken to the Neighbourhood Centre businesses to ensure we have their support in this matter, we have made clear that we are keen to see this permanently blocked. Having received several emails from residents raising the issue of cars parking fully on pavements in some residential roads in the village, we contacted the local PCSO. He has agreed to visit the areas where this is happening to issue “parking alerts” to offending cars. He has also advised that residents can report such vehicles via Operation Crackdown (http://www.operationcrackdown.org/) under the “unnecessary obstruction” tab, you can also attach a photo to your report. The challenge of holding developers in the newer parts of the village to their commitments has continued this month. Bovis recently made a site visit to their parts of the Wickhurst Green development and have agreed a list of works that need to be completed in order to bring the areas up to standard before they are passed to the management company. Bellway have stated that work will be beginning shortly on the communal areas in Soloman’s Seal that still require significant works in some places. As we enter the new planting season, Countryside properties have committed to resuming the landscaping works that were abandoned during lockdown and we continue to press for action to be taken at the OWL junctions and those roads in the development which are at risk of being used as a cut through. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk 17

Encouraging Biodiversity

“Nature offers us all precious breathing space away from the stresses and strains of modern life, it enables us to experience joy and wonder, to slow down and to appreciate the wildlife that lives side-by-side with us.” - Sir David Attenborough It is widely recognised that we are facing a global environmental crisis. Climate change, extreme biodiversity loss and plastic pollution are posing an unprecedented threat to humanity and the natural world. Here in Broadbridge Heath, we have been impacted by huge amounts of house building, new roads and loss of wildlife habitat. BBH Parish Council are committed to help improve Biodiversity, and working closely with West Sussex County Council we are hoping to create new, flower-rich habitat on some of the wide verges along the former BBH Bypass.

You may have already seen the work in progress but using a mix of good quality UK-sourced wild flower seed, over 3000 square metres of ground has been seeded recently. This includes the swan neck area, small triangle and larger verge of the downgraded bypass. It will take a little time for the seeded areas to become established but in time they will provide a vital source of nectar for countless bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects during the summer months every year. These insects will, in turn, provide food for birds and mammals, including hedgehogs and bats. The new ‘meadow’ areas will be carefully managed to maintain their biodiversity and to ensure that once the flowers have finished they do not become unsightly. It is planned to cut an informal path through the largest meadow area so that it is possible for everyone to get really close up to the flowers and the insects they support! Whilst we wait in anticipation over the winter months for the seeds to grow may we remind you of the “Top Common” area (corner of Byfleets Lane, opposite BBH Cricket Club). In current weeks local village Volunteers and Green Gym supported by local ecologist David Bridges will be carrying out some Winter Work in preparation for next year. This year over 19 species of Butterfly have been spotted here – let’s hope 2021 will see that number increase! It is a beautiful area for a walk or even a moment of reflection in these complex times. Special thanks to local ecologist David Bridges for his support with this project. 19

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Budgeting The knock-on effects from lockdown are having different financial impacts on people. There are some who find they have saved money, whereas for others unfortunately the story is very different. But whatever the situation, budgeting is important. Over the years I have noticed that it is those clients who budget and know exactly how much they are spending that have the most to show for it. So often, after an income analysis clients are surprised at how much surplus income they actually have. Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t know where you are going you might wind up someplace else.” This is true even when it comes to finances. When you set up in business, one of the first things a bank asks for is a business plan, and even in your personal finances you should do the same. The plan will tell you whether something is affordable or not. We use specialised software for cash flow planning to help you to plan your future. We can add a stress test to show what would happen if you lost your income, or if there were a stockmarket crash. This can then give confidence as to whether a goal is obtainable or not and can help to alleviate those sleepless nights. At Monetary Solutions we offer a free no-obligation consultation in person or via video call, if you would prefer this method in the current situation. So call us if you would like to discuss your goals. It may also help you to feel more positive by giving yourself a project and something else to focus on. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions ( www.monetarysolutions.co.uk ). To discuss the above or any other financial matter, please call us on 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk
