News & Events
A ten-year old boy from the Nelson programme said, “The best thing about having a mentor is that I’ve learnt to have a friend.” When he was asked what makes a friendship, he replied, “Trust, time and fun”. And, this ten year-old captured the essence of the Big Brothers Big Sisters model of mentoring. It’s not a complex intervention; it’s all about fun, friendships and ordinary activities. Being a mentor doesn't require any special skills - just a willingness to be a supportive friend, do fun stuff and provide a listening ear. We are desperately short of mentors especially in Stoke and Richmond. If you or someone you know is interested in finding out more give us a call or drop us an email. firstname.lastname@example.org

How lucky are we to live in Nelson! A day at the beach or the river are wonderful low cost and easy to organise outings. The value in terms of quality time with a young person can never be over-stated. It amazes me how many of our young people do not experience this very often. Taking young people into the outdoors has so many benefits- new places, activities, and experiences. We consider it very important to provide these sorts of opportunities for our mentors and mentees through our programme. Many of our young people don’t know what they don’t know – so exposing them to experiences that they would not normally get is important in helping them grow, gain confidence and look outside themselves to the world around them. Here in Big Brothers Big Sisters, we make the most of these opportunities locally and across our region. One of the nicest things we see are the smiles on our little people’s faces enjoying something they don’t usually get to experience, having a personal achievement and most of all having a caring mentor sharing the experiences and achievements with them. Our sponsors, funders and supporters really do make a difference in this world! We are thrilled to welcome some wonderful local organisations on as our new Cornerstone Sponsors and look forward to partnering with them over the next few years. They all believe in supporting our community and making it the best place to be! Ngā mihi nui Rachel

There were a few drenched kids by the end of our BBQ breakfast for mentors and young people at Tahunanui beach in January. The kids had a ball running through the spray of fire hoses brought along by Nelson firefighters and
splashing in the puddles created. Thanks Nelson Fire Service!
