A YEAR OF BIG IMPACT Dear Friends, We are so excited to be able to share with you in this annual report our program’s growth and a sampling of the stories of the lives, because of you, we have touched. Our amazingly generous community of supporters, friends, corporate partners, and foundations make this possible. Thank you for sharing your time, your treasure, your talent, your ideas, your networks, and much more! This past year has been a year of outreach and growth. One that has allowed us to meet new people, make new matches, and provide the kids in our program with so many new opportunities and experiences. We are proud to report that we served 758 youth during our 2017-2018 fiscal year. We also made 146 new mentoring matches. We have given $27,900 in scholarship award money to 9 Littles and High School Bigs. Through our College and Career Readiness initiative, we’ve engaged 395 youth by offering college workshops, campus tours, career exploration, and encouraging our Littles to set goals and dream BIG. Not only have we been able to help support our youths’ dreams through scholarships, we have also been given the opportunity to provide nearly 600 tickets for our matches to attend various theater and sporting events through donations from our supporters. Our Dr. Potter Bigs on Campus Mentoring Initiative is still going strong. This initiative buses local youth to the St. Cloud State University campus to meet one-to-one with a mentor, explore campus, and participate in campus activities. This program continues to grow each year! In 2019, we will be celebrating a major milestone- our 50th anniversary in the Central Minnesota community. As we enter our 50th year, we will share with you even more about our program’s growth, the growth of the kids we serve, and the deepening of our relationships with you, our community of givers. We hope that you are as excited and hopeful about the future of Big Brothers Big Sisters as we are. Thank you for supporting the children of Central Minnesota. Please stand with us. Together, we are defenders of potential.

IMPACT AREAS We know at Big Brothers Big Sisters that we have IMPACT on three core areas in a child’s life: Increased Confidence, Educational Success, and Avoiding Risky Behaviors. Research proves that children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are more likely to form stronger relationships with family and friends, perform better in school, and are less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol.
AVOIDING RISKY BEHAVIOR
Strong, positive relationships foster confidence and improve decision making. Only 57% of Central Minnesota children report having at least one supportive adult in their life.
A child’s academic success refers to their proficiency in math and reading. 64% of Stearns County students do not meet academic standards in math, reading, and science.
Truancy, violent/non-violent offenses, teenage pregnancy, and underage drinking are all risky behaviors. 33% of adolescents in Stearns County report using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.
of our Littles have improved their self confidence because of their Big Brother or Sister.
of our Littles have shown improvement in their academic performance.
of Littles have improved their attitudes toward risky behaviors.
*Data taken from the Minnesota Student Survey: a triennial survey of young people regarding a variety of risk and protectivfe factos, and the Minnesota Report Card: a tool designed to provide access to district and school information, test results, and other critical data.
BIG BROTHER OF THE YEAR
SPENCER & KENNY
“ I witnessed ten years of a beautiful and lasting friendship grow to what we have today. I could never put a price tag on what being a Big Brother is all about. It is about changing one life and your own in so many special ways. It will take you on a rollar coaster
Kenny and Spencer were matched from April 2008 to June
of ups and downs and most
2018. When they were introduced, Spencer was only eight
importantly, you will have a
years old and had been waiting for over a year to get a Big
forever friend for a lifetime.”
- Kenny Hendrickson
Brother. They quickly bonded over a variety of activies and began to get to know each other more and more. In their time together, they’ve enjoyed fishing, bowling, working out, going to the movies, and spending time with Kenny’s extended family. Kenny has been an unwavering source of support for Spencer since the beginning of their match. When Spencer’s mother passed away in 2012, Kenny was instantly by his side. He was there for Spencer every step of the way to help with that tough transition during an emotionally difficult time in his life. Spencer graduated from high school in 2018 and after discussing an assortment of options, decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. Spencer is currently attending Alexandria Techinincal and Community College to achieve that goal. We’re confident their friendship will continue and they will remain “brothers” for many years to come!
BIG SISTER OF THE YEAR
KIM & JESSICA
“Every moment is worth it. You can change a life in the simplest way by being present.” - Jessica Holmgren
Jessica and Kim have been matched for a little over 7 years! Their relationship has definitely grown over the years. A big reason they really feel like sisters is that Kim knows that Jessica is someone that she can count on. A big change that has come for Kim is having a baby during her junior year of high school. Jessica has been a strong support for her Little Sister during this time. She is very proud that not only did Kim graduate high school, but is also close to completing her Associate’s degree at the St. Cloud Technical Community College. Kim then plans to attend SCSU for her Architecture degree. In addition to her friendship and commitment to Kim, Jessica was nominated as Big Sister of the Year because of her passion for mentoring. Jessica has been a changing force in her Little’s life and positively impacts our community by being a mentor. Jessica and Kim will always be a part of each other’s lives. Jessica is continuing her commitment to kids and Big Brothers Big Sisters by becoming a Big Family with her husband!
BIG FAMILY OF THE YEAR
THE NOBLES & JESSE
“Jesse has definitely become one of the family, he’s kind of the missing link that we always had and he just fits right in with what we love to do and he’s definitely become one of us.” – Sarah Noble
Sarah, Andy, Lexi, Kate, and Will Noble have been matched with their Little Brother Jesse since October 2015. Jesse was eight years old when he was matched with his Big Family and the Noble children were all within three years of him. Over the past three years, every member of the Noble family has established a strong and unique friendship with Jesse. Through his match, Jesse has gained new experiences such as going rock climbing, to Valleyfair, and to a Vikings game at the new U.S. Bank Stadium. As a match, they have volunteered at Golf Fore Kids’ Sake the past two summers and attended many Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsored activities. Sarah and Andy have advocated for the program on many occasions and requested various donations from their workplaces. The Noble family provided their friendship, support, and encouragement in the times that Jesse needed it most. Jesse now refers to the Nobles as his “Big Dad”, “Big Mom”, “Big Sisters”, and “Big Little Brother” (since Will is younger than him). We are excited to see their match continue to grow in the years to come!
