May 2009

Dear National Guide Right Commission: It has been an exciting two years for the Arizona Guide Right Youth Development Program: Kappa League. It was through divine intervention that we selected “Building A Bridge To Success” and “Achievement On Every Level” as our guiding themes for these years. These themes allowed us to plan, implement, and evaluate our program on a consistent basis as we laid the groundwork for success putting together realistic objectives leading to achieving success on every level. Initiative led us to a bridge which allowed us to develop the leadership in our Kappa Leaguers as they continued to follow a path of success Each year we, at our first meeting, bring together parents and Kappa Leaguers, so that we can meet the needs of the primary stake holders involved in our program. We present our program for each year, receive monetary and commitment of time support from parents and members of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter, who are present in strong numbers each month that we meet. In cultivating the leadership seed in our Kappa Leaguers we expose them to successful entrepreneurs, top level engineers, motivation speakers, active writing and communicating activities, Navy Seals, credit abuse resistant education, business development activities, and a host of handson activities allowing them to become an active participant in their success. We also had our Kappa Leaguers take the SAT practice exams and participate in SAT strategy sessions presented by Princeton Review. We shared with them our successes and failures and listened attentively to their concerns as young men in our communities. They participated in MLK marches, Kappa Kamp, served meals to disadvantaged families on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and pushed themselves to be the best academically. Achievement in numerous fields of endeavor was represented as the Kappa Leaguers excelled in everything from mastering video games, obtaining leadership positions in the boy scouts, to receiving honors in top sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, lacrosse, track, and golf. Over the past two years we’ve had a prom king (DeMarcus Stevens), homecoming kings (Sean Woods and Joseph LaMar), a class president (DeMarcus Stevens) and numerous all-state athletic performers. As you take your valuable time to review our credentials, be rest assured that we sincerely believe that there are numerous Barack Obamas in our group and we shall continue to give our all to development leadership skills in our Kappa Leaguers as well as maintain our high expectations for them. It is with great honor, pleasure, and pride that we present to you the 2007 through 2009 Arizona Guide Right Youth Development Program: Kappa Leaguers.

Sincerely,

Michael G. Flemister, Ph.D. Director •3•

VERIFICATION May 2009 Dear Dr. Mobley, It is with extreme pleasure and immeasurable pride that we submit our Kappa League Awards packet this year to the Western Province. As you know, we work hard each year to insure that the youth in our community have every opportunity possible to reach their goals as they are selected as members of our Kappa League Program. This year we got the parents even more involved as stake holders in our vision to cultivate the leadership skills in their sons. We have exposed our Kappa Leaguers to motivational speakers such as Victor Lee and multimillion dollar trust fund executive Michael Kelly. The Kappa Leaguers learned the importance of altruism as they served Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to disadvantaged families. There are mentoring sessions whereby they spend time one-on-one with members of Phoenix Alumni Chapter and Gamma Iota. We feel that this has been an exceptional period in the Kappa Leaguers lives because of our commitment to the program and what they have taught us about being committed and discipline. Yours truly, Otis Perkins

FRATERNAL SUPPORT

We are truly appreciative of the support that we receive from Phoenix Alumni Chapter and Gamma Iota (Arizona State University.) On average, we have 15 Phoenix Alumni Chapter members and six Gamma Iota members attend every one of our monthly meetings. Both groups were there to support our program as we fed disadvantaged families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, serving as panelist on college day, at the MLK March, at our annual fund raiser (serving as additional security), and at our annual showcase serving as speakers (Daniel Heard) and chaperones. The Arizona Guide Right Foundation continues to support us in their presence at our events and through immeasurable financial donations. As a chapter Phoenix Alumni has stepped up both through their financial donations and giving of their valuable time to make sure that we have a successful program. •6•

ACADEMICS & KNOW HOW Preparation For The Future: Standardized Strategy Session The Kappa Leaguers took the PRA Exam which is a new standardized test that is a predictor of performance. It consists of SAT and ACT questions and the results show which test would be best for the student to take. The following week Princeton Review presented a 2-hour strategy session. [November 15, 2008] The mind must be taken through a mental combine to prepare it to perform at higher levels. We spare no program because our expectations are high for our Kappa Leaguers. [November 22, 2008] College Day Session On our College Day session we had three panels come in and discuss their experiences at HBCUs, majority schools, and as undergraduate Greeks at Arizona State University.

Family members attended as well and each Kappa Leaguer received a 27- page booklet with thousands of dollars worth of grants and scholarships. [December 29, 2008]

Black History Session We exposed our Kappa Leaguers to some of the most talented speakers in the nation including LaSana Hotep who is a leading authority on AfricanAmerican History and the Hip Hop Culture. He helped all of us understand the importance of knowing our history. [February 21, 2009]

Arizona Guide Right Youth Development Program - Kappa League Family Support Will Get You There: Kappa Kamp In line with International Headquarters and Western Province goals to have youth in our Kappa League Programs attend the Kappa Kamp we were able to send Rashad Bernard, freshman, to Piney Woods, Mississippi to represent our state, our program, and his good family name. Rashad did a fantastic job. He did so well that the director called us and let us know that Rashad was one of there most outstanding students. [June 15-June 28, 2008]

It Takes Discipline To Manage Money: C.A.R.E. Credit Abuse Resistance Education is a program that is supported by our fraternity and one that provides invaluable information to our youth as they are becoming part of our financial community. Knowing how to manage money, choose credit carefully, and understanding the difference between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ are requisites to building a foundation that will allow our Kappa Leaguers not to get caught up in making bad financial decisions. COMMUNITY SERVICE

Giving... Cultivating True Leadership In order to cultivate leadership, Kappa Leaguers must have experiences that teach them the importance of giving back to the community. Each year the Kappa Leaguers join forces with Valley Christian Centers to serve disadvantaged families Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. More than 300 families were served wonderful meals between the two events. [November 20 and December 18, 2008]

KAPPA SHOWCASE

We end each program year with a Kappa Showcase and Luncheon. The event is designed to recognize the success of the program and honoring all Kappa Leaguers. Special recognition is given to our seniors, who are allowed to perform using their God-given talents. It’s an opportunity for the community, family, friends and our Chapter to come out and show their support. We exceed our attendance expectations primarily because of the positive press we receive throughout the year. As fall came around, the word got out and at our first meeting a capacity crowd showed up, including parents, friends and family of potential Kappa Leaguers. The 2008-2009 program represented 17 high schools throughout Arizona.
