Mission Statement: Bay Ridge Preparatory School is dedicated to enriching intellectual curiosity, creativity, and emotional intelligence through an inclusive, student-centered community that values the talents and interests of each person. The School and Community: Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, non-profit, coeducational, college-preparatory K-12 school located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Bay Ridge Prep opened in the fall of 1998 and graduated its first senior class in Spring 1999. The Upper School now enrolls approximately 200 students in grades 9– 12, serving all five boroughs of New York City and Long Island. Approximately 32% of our students identify as students of color. The Upper School allows students to gain exposure to the type of academic rigor that will be experienced in an undergraduate program while still learning in an environment that promotes creativity and celebrates each individual. Because we believe that learning is both an intellectual and an emotional experience, we explicitly teach skills that build emotional and social intelligence, which help students create healthy and satisfying relationships in and outside of school. We provide students the freedom and responsibility to pursue their interests through open-ended inquiry, a wide course selection and a variety of student-initiated clubs, research, and projects. We emphasize innovation, creativity and practical application, going beyond the rudiments of rote knowledge acquisition and memorization. AP courses offered:

Curriculum: A Tailored Academic Experience Bay Ridge Prep offers a challenging curriculum that includes opportunities for advanced learning, research, exploration, and the mining and discovery of new passions. Our approach is both academically rigorous and student-centered. It leans into the types of complex problems that both challenge and reshape the way that students think and respond to both themselves, the community, and the world around them. In addition to our robust core course offerings, we provide a wide variety of elective courses, over 16 varsity sports, and arts programs including music, ceramics, dance, graphic design, jazz ensemble, photography, theater and studio art. Seniors are required to perform a senior project. They are given Fridays off from school, once per week during the second semester, to engage in activities related to their project, whether it be research, community service, or internship experience. Students can select their own projects/sites (subject to approval), or are assisted in developing their project through a faculty mentor. In addition to our mainstream program, two supportive programs are available for students with specific learning differences. The Achieve and Bridge Programs exist within our mainstream learning environment and develop students’ study skills, organization, reading and writing. Modified Courses are for students in our Bridge Program who have significant learning disabilities. Curricular modifications include slower pacing of material and access to approved accommodations for testing and learning and most modified courses mirror their mainstream counterparts in terms of major content covered.
