Merkel ends China visit in Nanjing
Source: CCTV.com | 08-30-2007 09:12 German Chancellor Angela Merkel has wrapped up her visit to China. She ended her trip to Nanjing by touring one of Germany's biggest companies on Wednesday. During her stay, the Chancellor used "Romeo and Juliet" to describe Sino-German relations and said her country wants to be part of China's economic growth. Merkel paid a visit to China's eastern city of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, because a number of German companies are based there, like Siemens, Bosch and BASF. Merkel inaugurated the third phase of construction for Siemens, which was one of earliest to come to China to set up manufacturing plants. Angela Merkel said, "There are a lot of German companies here in this place. We are part of the Chinese economic development. We are hoping to become a reliable cooperation partner of China's. We are also hoping to benefit from this." Merkel arrived in Nanjing on Tuesday. She attended a series of events, including a speech at Nanjing University and a meeting with provincial leaders. When the chancellor was invited to a ballet performance of "Romeo and Juliet", she used the famous lovers to describe Sino-German relations. Merkel is on her second visit to China as chancellor, with the clear aim of strengthening ties and promoting communication and cooperation with China. During her stay, she met with top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. 25 German business and industry heads are travelling with her. She is now headed to Japan, the second leg of her week-long Asian tour.
