a message from our board chair and executive director

Alexis Atkins Board Chair

David W. Reaney Executive Director

Each year, the staff at Bay Area Food Bank seem to find new paths and new ways to improve upon existing programs to help our neighbors in need. As you’ll read in the report, throughout 2013 we continued to expand the Retail Store Level Pickup Program and secure more donated food and fresh produce thanks to hundreds of employees at over 150 area grocery stores. Our child nutrition programs continued to develop and provide hundreds of thousands of snacks and meals year round with the help of volunteers working at over 100 afterschool and summer lunch sites in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Our Community Garden Network kept growing, getting more children involved with learning about fresh food and the importance of proper nutrition. Our SNAP Outreach team assisted thousands of clients across Alabama and ended the year by expanding its work into south Mississippi. With the additional help of our administration and development department, our combined efforts led to our designation in July by Charity Navigator as one of America’s Top 10 Top Notch Charities from among the nearly 7,000 nonprofit organizations and charities they evaluate. None of this progress would have been possible without the help of our fantastic donors who so strongly believe in and support our mission and the thousands of volunteers donating their time at the food bank, the church pantries, soup kitchens and child nutrition sites across the Central Gulf Coast. On behalf of the board, staff, and those we support, we extend our deepest gratitude in helping us fight hunger and improve the lives of our neighbors in need.

CHILD NUTRITION This year marked the tenth year we have participated in the federally funded Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). When the program began in 2003, we served only three sites in Mobile, AL. Since then, it has continued to grow and now serves more than 100 sites throughout our entire service area. Only 7% of Alabama’s children have access to summer lunch (14% nationally), and it is especially hard for children in rural areas. To help fill this gap, we partnered with the Bama Dining facility at the University of Alabama to help serve an additional 600 children in four counties around Tuscaloosa. In June, Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey visited one of our SFSP sites, Sonny Callahan Boys & Girls Club, as part of the regional roll out for the Ending Child Hunger in Alabama campaign, which launched statewide in April. The Lieutenant Governor spoke with the children and served lunches provided by the food bank. We look forward to continuing to expand our programs and fight child hunger in our communities.

MOBILE PANTRY Through our Mobile Pantry Program, we are able to distribute a variety of groceries in a single, one-day event at an off-site location, relieving the need for partner agencies to store food. A single mobile pantry can help feed over 100 families in need. In 2013, the food bank conducted 364 mobile pantry distributions, providing an estimated 1.2 million meals to those in need.

1,588,300 pounds distributed through our Mobile Pantry Program SNAP OUTREACH Our SNAP Outreach Program grew exponentially in 2013 thanks to a partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). With their help, we were able to increase awareness of the federal assistance program among Alabama seniors and assist them with the lengthy application process. Our outreach program grew statewide in 2013 in Alabama, and we will continue to expand by providing these services in our Mississippi service area in 2014.

COMMUNITY GARDEN NETWORK In 2013, our Community Garden Program grew into the Bay Area Food Bank Community Garden Network, consisting of two gardens at our Main Branch, the Adopt-a-Plot Garden and the Education Garden, and six satellite gardens throughout Mobile County – including sites where we already host child nutrition programs and senior living facilities. The Adopt-a-Plot Garden consists of 39 raised beds that members of the community can use to garden and grow fresh produce and donate 50% of their harvest back to the food bank to help those in need gain access to healthier food. Our Education Garden continues to grow and host workshops, field trips and volunteers looking to learn more about gardening. Special thanks also goes to Mobile County Extension Office for donating a 1,450 gallon capacity cistern to harvest rain water and keep are our garden hydrated during the hot summer months. In 2013 we also ramped up our gleaning efforts, organizing gleanings at Sunnyland Satsuma Farm, Oak Hill Farm, LA Berry Farm and Craine Creek Farm. Thanks to the farmers’ generosity and the hard work of over 100 volunteers, we were able to harvest more than 18,360 pounds of fresh produce to distribute to those in need. We hope our garden and gleaning programs will continue to sprout success in 2014, and we are able to engage more children in growing their own food by helping more schools start gardens and building templates that will help organizations establish successful garden curricula.

RETAIL STORE LEVEL PICKUP PROGRAM The Retail Store Level Pickup Program (RSLPP) is key in helping us provide fresh, nutritious food to our member agencies. In 2013, we received a grant from the Walmart Foundation through Feeding America that let us hire a Retail Store Donation Coordinator at our Panhandle Branch. Having an employee dedicated to this program allowed us to identify more partner stores and improve relationships with our existing partners. By cultivating these relationships, more donations are being made to our organization to help feed people in need along the Central Gulf Coast. When we began collecting from retail stores in 2010, we collected 3.4 million pounds. That amount has more than doubled with more than 7.4 million pounds being collected in 2013.

Our Bridging The Gap monthly giving program allows donors to give funds on a regularly scheduled monthly basis. This provides predictable revenue that helps the food bank make long-term plans for programs and projects to tackle the growing challenges of food insecurity. Processing time is also faster, making sure gifts are put to work right away to help people in need. We’d like to thank our 2013 Bridging The Gap members who help us serve hope all year long.
