ustralia’s push to encourage more young international travellers to visit Down Under and take advantage of the country’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is gathering momentum, with industry and travel partners lining up to get involved in Tourism Australia’s new global youth campaign. Tourism Australia has already signed agreements worth $1.2 million with six state and territory partners as well as more than a dozen travel companies who will offer competitive deals targeting youth travellers in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the Nordics. The campaign is targeting youth travellers, specifically seeking to reverse a current downturn in arrivals from Australia’s key WHM markets. It is part of a package of recently announced government measures to increase Australia’s attractiveness as a WHM destination. For the year ending June 2016, Australia welcomed 1.98 million international youth arrivals, including almost 320,000 working holiday makers. The six state and territory tourism organizations supporting Tourism Australia’s youth focus are Destination NSW, the South Australia Tourism Commission, Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Northern Territory, Tourism Western Australia, and Visit Victoria. → tc

AEROMEXICO BOOSTS CDN. SERVICE Dropped visa requirement spurs demand

Tis’ the season for expanded air service between this country and Mexico City. Aeromexico is boosting the number of flights it offers between Canada and Mexico’s capital, a move it says reflects growing demand fueled in part by Ottawa’s decision to do away with visas for Mexicans wanting to visit Canada, a move that will take place just before the arrival of Christmas. Dec. 2 will see Aeromexico begin offering 11 weekly scheduled flights to Montreal, while the following day sees the number of weekly flights offered to both Vancouver and Toronto rise to 10 a week. routinely carry people from this country to Mexico. All the flights provide a choice of three classes of service. Bosquez concedes that many Canadians are unfamiliar with Aeromexico, adding it needs to boost its Canadian profile. But he adds that Aeromexico is a member of SkyTeam, a weighty name in the airline industry, and the average age of an Aeromexico plane is 7.8 years, which Bosquez says is less than the industry average. The airline is also a codeshare partner with WestJet. Bosquez adds that Aeromexico is “proud” to not charge passengers for the likes of meals and a checked-in bag. “When you pay for a ticket, you pay for full service.” “I think as a carrier we continue to offer a total value,” says Michele Martinson of the airline’s Canadian office. “We call it fully inclusive.” Passengers travelling with Aeromexico for the first time are surprised to learn they won’t be charged for meals or a checked-in bag, she adds. →

CARNIVAL CORP. MAKES UN-FATHOM-ABLE DECISION Carnival Corporation is pulling the plug on Fathom and sending the 704-passenger Adonia, which had been sailing week-long “social impact” cruises to the Dominican Republic and Cuba since May, back to P&O Cruises. “The Fathom experience has been expanded across our many Carnival Corporation brands sailing to the Dominican Republic and beyond, and the Adonia is being scheduled to sail in the UK for the summer season for our P&O guests,” confirmed Roger Frizzell, Carnival Corp.’s chief information officer. Fathom was the first new brand created by Carnival Corp. since the 1990s. It’s reported Adonia will continue sailing its Caribbean itineraries through May.

cuba But the move does not mean an end to Cuba sailings for Carnival, with Frizzal noting that the company has requested approval from Cuba to sail there with other brands beginning in June 2017. Frizzal said, “We plan to continue sailing to Cuba for many years to come based on the success of our first cruises to the country, which have proven to extremely successful. Fathom continues to receive some of the highest ratings in the company based on guest surveys, and we hope to expand the Fathom experience to other markets in the future.” →

That distinction also made it the only beach in the US on its list of the 25 Best Beaches in the World at No. 20. RIU REGGAE MAKES JAMAICA DEBUT CUBAN RESTAURANT HITS THE RIGHT NOTE Maybe he’s amazed... by Cuban music. Famed musician Paul McCartney and family members made an unannounced visit to Santiago de Cuba in 2000, where he bought CDs of Cuban music during a visit to a city that bills itself as the “cradle of son music.” Son is linked to several other types of Cuban music. The McCartney entourage also ate at the El Morro restaurant, found by a massive fortress built long ago, and his visit there is recalled in part with a metal plaque now attached to the chair he sat on, and the plate and utensils he used being on display as well. “While sitting on McCartney’s chair, I envisioned what beautiful lines Paul would have written about this magnificent Cuban vista,” said visiting Canadian Stephen Smith. “I didn’t know he visited El Morro and that restaurant. It is the highlight of the restaurant for sure,” added Karen Puebla of the Cuba Tourist Board. →w
