ustralia’s push to encourage more young international travellers to visit Down Under and take advantage of the country’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is gathering momentum, with industry and travel partners lining up to get involved in Tourism Australia’s new global youth campaign. Tourism Australia has already signed agreements worth $1.2 million with six state and territory partners as well as more than a dozen travel companies who will offer competitive deals targeting youth travellers in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the Nordics. The campaign is targeting youth travellers, specifically seeking to reverse a current downturn in arrivals from Australia’s key WHM markets. It is part of a package of recently announced government measures to increase Australia’s attractiveness as a WHM destination. For the year ending June 2016, Australia welcomed 1.98 million international youth arrivals, including almost 320,000 working holiday makers. The six state and territory tourism organizations supporting Tourism Australia’s youth focus are Destination NSW, the South Australia Tourism Commission, Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Northern Territory, Tourism Western Australia, and Visit Victoria. → www.australia.com tc

Bosquez concedes that many Canadians are unfamiliar with Aeromexico, adding it needs to boost its Canadian profile. But he adds that Aeromexico is a member of SkyTeam, a weighty name in the airline industry, and the average age of an Aeromexico plane is 7.8 years, which Bosquez says is less than the industry average. The airline is also a codeshare partner with WestJet. Bosquez adds that Aeromexico is “proud” to not charge passengers for the likes of meals and a checked-in bag. “When you pay for a ticket, you pay for full service.” “I think as a carrier we continue to offer a total value,” says Michele Martinson of the airline’s Canadian office. “We call it fully inclusive.” Passengers travelling with Aeromexico for the first time are surprised to learn they won’t be charged for meals or a checked-in bag, she adds. → www.aeromexico.com

PRINCESS RETURNING TO CARIBBEAN IN SUMMER ‘18 For the first time in four years, Princess Cruises will offer summer Caribbean cruises, including Panama Canal transits in 2018. The 3,192-passenger Caribbean Princess returns to sail on a full summer season of voyages ranging from seven-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries to a 20-day Caribbean and Panama Canal Explorer. All summer Caribbean cruises are open for sale Dec. 1. The 2018 April to October program features 47 departures, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, including eight unique itineraries visiting 23 destinations in 22 countries. MSC Cruises and Fincantieri recently celebrated the float-out of MSC Seaside, one of two new groundbreaking mega-ships that MSC will bring into service between June and December 2017. The ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, where the ship is being built. The 5,179-passenger MSC Seaside will homeport in Miami as of December 2017 and will sail year-round in the Caribbean. Sister ship – MSC Seaview – is set to enter service in the spring 2018 and will be based in the Western Mediterranean.

CARNIVAL CORP. MAKES UN-FATHOM-ABLE DECISION Carnival Corporation is pulling the plug on Fathom and sending the 704-passenger Adonia, which had been sailing week-long “social impact” cruises to the Dominican Republic and Cuba since May, back to P&O Cruises. “The Fathom experience has been expanded across our many Carnival Corporation brands sailing to the Dominican Republic and beyond, and the Adonia is being scheduled to sail in the UK for the summer season for our P&O guests,” confirmed Roger Frizzell, Carnival Corp.’s chief information officer. Fathom was the first new brand created by Carnival Corp. since the 1990s. It’s reported Adonia will continue sailing its Caribbean itineraries through May.

MYRTLE BEACH DISCOUNTS ‘MAKE UP’ FOR CDN. DOLLAR Though the 56th annual CanadianAmerican Festival lasts just one week – March 11-19 – but select Myrtle Beach-area hotels, merchants and attractions are offering discounts from January through April for travellers with a valid Canadian passport. Ranging from 25% to as much as 55%, the discounts are designed to help Canadians “make up” the difference in the Canadian exchange rate. Famed musician Paul McCartney and family members made an unannounced visit to Santiago de Cuba in 2000, where he bought CDs of Cuban music during a visit to a city that bills itself as the “cradle of son music.” Son is linked to several other types of Cuban music.
