Are You Thinking About A New Career Path… WITH A STRONG focus on putting details of your past paid and unpaid work experience in your resume, the question arises of what information should be included if you are looking for a career change, where your past experience really doesn’t seemingly relate to the new direction you want to take. You certainly can be considered for a role that is outside your existing experience if you can prove that you have a flexible and teachable attitude, and that you have the physical and mental capacity to do the job. Over the years, I have enjoyed watching the TV series, Celebrity Apprentice. It’s always interesting

to observe the different personalities who are chosen to compete, and how they deal with the challenges they face. In the original Australian series without celebrities, successful Sydney entrepreneur Mark Bouris conducted a very public job interview process to employ a Business Development Manager for his new venture Yellow Brick Road. An interesting collection of people made up the final 12 applicants – each had their own strengths, weaknesses, quirkiness, and approach to life. Every week there are heroes the viewers will want to win, and villains they want to fail. Judgments are mostly superficial, based on people’s personalities, and their ability to work

together with others. The viewing, while in some ways quite staged and theatrical, is always entertaining. Certainly not your typical job interview! A Google search helped me find the name of the person who won that first series, and I read with interest some of the articles that were written about him at the time. The consensus was that Andrew Morello was the wrong choice, and that he would never last in the job. At the age of 23, many thought him to be too young and inexperienced for such an important position. My next stop was over at LinkedIn where I searched Morello’s” profile, Interesting to find that more than seven years later, Andrew is still employed by YBR as the Head of Business Development. So much for not having the skills needed to do the job…
