BATH IN FASHION 2014 Bath in Fashion 2014 explores the influence and interplay between trends past and present; celebrating the creativity of a contemporary city whilst paying tribute to its illustrious past. When a true spirit of invention built something inspired, radical and bold. The event attracts commentators from the world of fashion stimulating debate, showcases summer ‘14 collections on the catwalk and hosts workshops and exhibitions. We look at the origins of an idea - what influences and moves us when we buy fashion and how and where do designers find their inspiration? 50 years may seem a long time in fashion but the arrival of BIBA in 1964 showed such vision that it captured the imagination of a generation; this was the stuff of style legend. Hilary Alexander, former Fashion Director of the Telegraph discusses the creation of brand BIBA with its founder Barbara Hulanicki. Fashion design students at Bath Spa University take inspiration from Barbara with their own work on the catwalk supporting a headline show of original vintage BIBA. Fast forward to the 21st Century for an encounter with Meadham Kirchoff, perhaps the most innovative designers of our time who make a rare appearance to talk about their work to Bath girl Sarah Mower, contributing editor to American Vogue. Looking at the business of fashion, the visionary MD of Topshop, Mary Homer; Creative Director of Gieves & Hawkes, Jason Basmajian and Creative Director of Clark’s, Paolo Gabrielli all talk about their personal journeys. Designer Emma Hope discusses Festival Fashion and Nina Campbell offers an interiors masterclass. Whilst the tenacity and personal style of Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company, is sure to be a talking point. Georgians: Dress in Polite Society shows off the Fashion Museum’s unique collection of historic dress and explores the influence of the period on current designers. The exhibition pays homage to the Assembly Rooms; the glittering venue which also hosts Bath in Fashion’s catwalks, the runway for Bath’s retailers to show their summer fashions. The Bath BID (Business Improvement District) Company has once again drawn together a collaboration of businesses across the city putting the spotlight on Bath’s fashion credentials and its vibrant retail scene. Discover your style in a city of individuality.

CATWALK SHOWS Vintage BIBA Show Sponsored by Iconclub A one-off opportunity to see original vintage BIBA on the catwalk, fifty years after Barbara Hulanicki established her now-iconic brand. BIBA has become synonymous of the Swinging Sixties, a period of experimentation and innovation; a radical departure, providing affordable fashion and a bold new retail experience. In May 1964, exactly 50 years ago, Barbara designed a gingham dress promoted in the Daily Mirror by mail order. Orders for the dress poured in and fashion was sent on a new trajectory. Fashion students at Bath Spa University have taken Barbara Hulanicki as initial inspiration and used their interpretations of gingham to design fabulous dresses, a selection of these will be showcased on the catwalk as part of the Vintage BIBA Show. Using modern fabrics and printing techniques, Barbara has recreated the first fashion tee body shape from 1964 for Iconclub. Iconclub is an on line store which features jersey fashion tees, nighties and accessories such as jumbo silk scarves and canvas tote bags. FILMS Sabrina [U] Audrey Hepburn is at her radiant best in this romantic comedy from the director of The Seven Year Itch. Humphrey Bogart and William Holden play the wealthy brothers competing for the affections of the chauffer’s daughter on her return from a stay in Paris, during which she has been transformed into a truly wondrous creature. Fashion helps the audience visualize Sabrina’s metamorphosis from lowly specimen to a sophisticated, educated woman of the world. Audrey Hepburn wears Edith Head’s wardrobe only for her early scenes in the film. The young designer Hubert de Givenchy designed Ms Hepburn’s wardrobe for her later scenes, tailoring everything to enhance her famously thin, slight frame. He created a special neckline for her to take the camera’s eye away from her protruding collarbones. This become known as the”décolleté Sabrina.” Director Billy Wilder. Starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart,William Holden. US 1954. 113 mins.
