Bassem Shahid BSc / MArch - Part II Architect PORTFOLIO

Through my work, I’m always challenging my role as a designer in response to cultural needs and values of society. My approach begins with thorough theory research and observation, followed by contextualisation, experimentation and reinvention. I intend to explore modes of intervention within the public sphere, with the aim to help construct social capital among communities, strengthen civic identity and ultimately contribute to a more democratic urban fabric.

Singular, monolithic and hierarchical, is how the Egyptian government portrays itself. Abiding by its national constitution, the consolidated State is a threat to local governance and local independence. The uprising of January 25th, 2011, has put Cairo in a state of flux, where the urban is in constant transformation. Community-led efforts an bottom-up initiatives are responsible for the most dynamic changes in the city today, pursuing a more democratic access to the urban and enforcing a new citizenship. Following those vibrant local forces, this thesis seeks to envision the modern western model of the ‘Town Hall’, which has failed to finance its utopian task of providing social welfare, to be operating instead as a bottom-up institution, an enabler to autonomous entities that make the city a more just and fair place to live.

Laying stealthily within the historic quarter of Old Cairo, triggered by the patterns of adaptation and reuse of architectural ruins by the quarter’s residents, the project puts forward an architectural investigation in the design of spaces freed from functional constraints; spaces of comfort, intended for humans and not machines - a notion that seems to be lost in today’s modern architecture.

African Caribbean Archive and Art Gallery Redcliffe, Bristol Axonometric drawing showing the different spaces of the building and how they relate to each other.

The African Caribbean Community in Bristol suffer from loss of identity, feel disjointed from the rest of the society and find it difficult to come to terms with their past. Bristol’s involvement in the slave trade played an important role in causing this latter. The proposal aims to help African Caribbean people to get to know their past, broaden their knowledge about their ancestors and experience the legacy of the slave trade through the eyes of African Caribbean artists instead of the usual western point of view. The design offers the visitors the ability to sit calmly and reflect on what they have seen in the galleries and contextualise it within the city. The reflection space is an opportunity for the African Caribbean Community to have their thoughts and words heard and exhibited to the public.

A Tower, a Landmark, an abstraction of a Spire or a Minaret, that visitors can identify and belong to.

Therapeutic Retreat design proposal is based on Cerith Wyn Evans work. His major solo exhibition presented a varied body of work brought together ‘in-concert’, described as “responding to the spaces which examine the transformative ‘Site/Sight/Cite’ effects that light, sound and duration can have on both spaces and their occupants.” Such concept is the driver for the design program, the division of the internal spaces, the design of the mains spaces and their function. The design will seek to have a combination of sensory features to provide visitors with a therapeutic experience that would help them with their self-reflection, prayers and inner peace seeking.

Early verrière pattern studies.

SO by Sofitel is a winning proposal for a design competition lunched by Sofitel for its new prestigious address at 150 Champs Elysées. Among 15 international candidates, RF Studio’s winning proposal offers a unique revival of ‘The Galleries des Portiques’, the original occupant of the Champs Elysées Haussmannian building in the 1930s, referencing one of the most outstanding art-deco pieces of that era by the likes of Louis Grossard. This extract from the competition scheme showcases my proposal for revisited 1930s art-deco verrières which offer an opulent ceiling and lighting system to the lobby and bar space.

The national vision of the ‘Re-invent Paris’ scheme, which seeks to define new ways of fashioning the City by mobilizing multidisciplinary teams and bringing to the fore the public interest and use. It calls for the revival of sites of outstanding significance around Paris, where new talents can emerge. In the light of this elaborative social urban plan, The Phalsbourg Company has acquired the Bûcherie Hotel located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, a building of an exceptional architecture that dates back to the 15th Century, creating the base for the Philanthro-lab. It is a meeting point between social sponsors, project holders, associations and volunteers with an aim to foster the emergence of new philanthropic projects. In collaboration with Perrot-Richard architects, RF Studio is offering a complete rehabilitation of the historical architecture with new co-working spaces, a central exhibition space, rentable meeting rooms and office space.

The 35-acre site at Royal Albert Dock is intended to be a gateway for Asian and Chinese businesses seeking to establish headquarters in the UK. This contemporary commercial trading centre aims to eventually be home to more than 3.7 million square feet of high quality work, retail and leisure space, including 2.5 million square feet of offices. The urban plan proposed for the clients, ABP & Stanhope Developments, includes different grades for office blocks, in which type D presented in this section is an upscale fully glazed building.

In the heart of Antoine Bourdelle’s home in Paris, the Bourdelle Museum opens up the private walls for a first-hand encounter with the delicate works of the French artist. In response to the notion of intimacy offered by the museum to its visitors, The ‘Paravent’ is a concept for a design intervention seeking to interact with both the visitor and the art work. Like a second skin, the Paravent will come to slightly dress parts of the museum, to optionally hide or reveal elements, thus, play with the perception of privacy in a practical and modular manner.

Art Direction

In respect to the gallery’s history, the Paravent design recalls the shapes and mechanism of sculpting atelier tables that were once housed in this building.
