PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hal Froese
What a weekend!!! Congratulations to the team for winning two of three from the University of Washington. It was exciting to welcome back members of the 1959, 1988 and 1991 teams who all participated in the College World Series in Omaha and to honor the 2008 National Champions with the new signs in Beiden Field. The past two weeks have been a blur. February brings the beginning of the baseball season for the team and the beginning of the many events that are planned by the Dugout Club for the team and the community. This is a time to thank the many individuals who have worked tirelessly for the past several months. Ron Primavera, our Vice President/ Treasurer has kept us all within our budgets and continues to help the club move forward in our commitment to the team and the University. The Golf Tournament was suspended….. until 2010, but Stan Busch, Byron Schnetz, and Wes Debusk put together a terrific
tournament and created a way to give out prizes and have all players get vouchers to play the Brighton Crest course at a future date. Sharlene Gomes, the Double Play dinner chair, provided a wonderful opportunity to honor the 2008 National Champions and prepare for the exciting 2009 season. The room was decorated beautifully by Ginger Hazel and her committee. This was one of the best auctions we have ever had and we have Kristi Lozano and Joyce Buss to thank for putting together such a wonderful collection of items. Not to be left out are all the individuals and companies who contributed and bid on items for the auction. The board… Patty Parks, Bob Doig, Mark Coombs, Lori DeLuca, Mike Gavrilis, Marsha Johnson, Kay McBee, Kevin Polglase, Ron Schiller, James Watt, our newest member Scott Uyesaka, and the Editor of this exceptional newsletter, Perry Mamigonian, have all contributed to our success. The entire University staff must be commended for continuing to support the effort of Sport Clubs. Thanks especially to Pat Ogle, our Club liaison, and Jason Pirtle with facilities that helps us on game days. I would like to have you do me a favor,
next time you come to Beiden Field. Be sure to check out the glass enclosed cases of memorabilia that line the concourse. Pictures of the 2009 Team Members are there along with our tribute to the National Champions and the many teams and individuals who have played at Fresno State. Duane Rash and his committee keep up these cases and help us remember the legacy of “Bulldog Baseball”. "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going because you might not get there.” This Yogi Berra quote has been one of my favorites through the years and it describes the mission of the Dugout Club. We are committed to helping Coach Batesole, his assistants and the entire team succeed on and off the field. Your commitment through membership and attending the games is essential. We cannot lose sight of the goal to graduate student athletes as we compete for a National Championship. Be sure to check out the schedule of events, I look forward to seeing you at a future game. Go Dogs! Hal Froese, President, Dugout Club
PEPSI-JOHNNY QUIK CLASSIC BEGINS MARCH 9 Coaches Luncheon on Wednesday at Beiden Field
The 31st Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic gets underway on Monday March 9 and continues through Saturday March 14. The tournament features a 4-team double round-robin format with 2 games scheduled each day. This year’s teams are: the University of Buffalo Bulls; the University of Portland Pilots; and the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. Here is the PepsiJohnny Quik Classic schedule: Monday March 9 CSUB vs. Buffalo 2:00 pm Fresno St. vs. Portland 6:05 pm Tuesday March 10 Buffalo vs. Portland 2:00 pm Fresno St. vs. CSUB 6:05 pm Wednesday March 11 CSUB vs. Portland 2:00 pm Fresno St. vs. Buffalo 6:05 pm Thursday March 12 Buffalo vs. CSUB 2:00 pm Fresno St. vs. Portland 6:05 pm Friday March 13 Portland vs. Buffalo 2:00 pm Fresno St. vs. CSUB 6:05 pm Saturday March 14 Portland vs. CSUB Fresno St. vs. Buffalo 6:05 pm For many years the Dugout Club has shared the duties of making the tournament a success, and it has come to represent the best qualities that make college baseball special to Fresno State fans. First and foremost is the Dugout Club’s well-earned reputation for hospitality, as our volunteers work to make sure the teams feel welcome all week long. Each team is assigned hosts, whose main duties are to make their teams feel at home by cheering them on at their games (except when they play Fresno State) and to provide snacks and drinks to their team after games.
This year’s team hosts are: Buffalo: Patty Parks & Sharlene Gomes Portland: Lori & Bill DeLuca, Ruby Earl, and Inman Perkins Bakersfield: Kristi Lozano & Joyce Buss Fresno State: The Hazel Family & Sec. B The Dugout Club also presents every player in the tournament with a welcome bag that is packed with snacks and goodies donated by local businesses. Our volunteers collect these donations from the community and then pack the bags on Saturday morning before the teams arrive. Also each head coach receives a complimentary courtesy car for the week donated by Lithia and the most generous Ron Kirby. Once again Ed Lynch and his crew will man the 'Cook Shak' in the Dugout Club area, providing food and drink during the tournament to all the visiting coaches, staff and volunteers. If you leave the ‘Shak’ hungry, then it’s your own fault! And finally, Dugout Club members will serve on the All-Tournament Selection Committee which will present awards to the week's best outfielder, infielder, pitcher and MVP following Saturday night’s game.
The highlight of the week will be the Coaches Luncheon to be held on Wednesday March 11 at 11:30 a.m. in the Center Field Pavilion at Beiden Field. Lunch is $10 and all the coaches will talk about their teams' experiences of the week and you’ll have a chance to win some nice door prizes donated by each team. Bring a friend from work and enjoy a great afternoon of baseball!

Hall in downtown Fresno. People took part in the large silent auction full of special and unique items. A competitive live auction had enthusiastic bidding for an Eye Q Vision Center laser treatment, a luxurious suite at the Las Vegas Hilton, and a very special one-of–a-kind oil painting of the Omaha Dog Pile done by Kelsey Abejon, fiancée of Stephen Susdorf which brought in the highest price of the evening. The long awaited ceremony of presenting each player and coach of the 2008 team with his National Championship ring was greeted with prolonged applause. The ring is specially made with each player and coach’s’ name embossed on one side, the National Championship and year on the other. A number one in rubies surrounded by diamonds on the top completes the very special ring.
The 2009 team was introduced with the rookies stating their names, schools of origin and recounting what they’ve learned so far as a member of the baseball program which produced many laughs. The evening’s master of ceremonies was George Takata who also had produced the 2008 video of the Dogs incredible run for the title that was shown with additional footage of the triumphant return to Beiden and the White House visit by Paul Loeffler. It was a special, unique and fun-filled evening that was the result of many people who worked very hard. Special thanks go to Patty Parks, Johna Wilson, Pat Cruise and newcomer Annette Paxton. Ginger Hazel did wonderful and unique table decorations. Photo Courtesy Picturesque Photo Boutique/ www.picturesquephotoboutique.com
