The Barzani Chrity Foundation is a non-governmental, non-politic al and non-profit organisation which was founded in 2005 in the city of Erbil, the Kurdistan Region of I. Principally, the BCF aims to provide assistance to people-in-need, low-income, internally displaced people and refugees. The BCF also aims to improve the education (especially child education) and health fields in the Region and strives to improve the lives and opportunities of the disabled and people with special needs. Barzani Charity Foundation is named after the legendary Kurdish leader Mustafa Barzani (19031979). The working philosophy of the foundation is based on a statement by Barzani where he says (It is an honour for a man to serve his own people). Therefore, people or humanity makes the centre for the BCF’s humanitarian work. For that, where there is a need for humanitarian assistance, the BCF considers it as its own responsibility to help, especially where it falls within its capacity and working sectors including (food assistance, non-food assistance, health and disability and education). The lack of a home-based charitable organization in the Kurdistan Region to provide assistance to people-in-

need and deprived people in the Region, necessitated the establishment of the BCF in 2005. Besides, as the result of the security disruption in other parts of Iraq and in Syria following the unfolding of armed conflicts post 2003, the large refugee and internally displaced people who have taken sanctuary in the Kurdistan Region were in urgent need for assistance to receive food, clothing, health care and accommodation. The BCF has tried to fill the gap since its inception back in 2005 and strived to give a helping hand in various areas to those needed assistance the most. To carry out this valuable and difficult task, the BCF has depended primarily on charitable and humanist people in the Region. It is fair to say that the main sources of funding for our many projects and humanitarian operations are charitable individuals, private companies and businesses in the Region, something which is highly appreciated. In addition, in collaboration with the UN agencies, international humanitarian organizations, and donor countries, the BCF provides daily assistance to refuges and IDPs in the Kurdistan Region, whose numbers are increasing on daily basis.

The military operations intensified in this month especially, in Mosul, Gayara and Shargat. The military situation led to a dramatic increase in the number of displaced people, a significant number of whom headed towards the KRI especially around Erbil and Kirkuk and more specifically, in Dibaga district near Erbil. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) released an alarming document on July 20th entitled ‘Mosul flash appeal’ where it warns of an imminent human catastrophe as the result of the expected military operation to liberate Mosul. The UN anticipates that if the operation goes ahead, we should expect a n exodus of displaced people from the area estimated between one million and one and a half million people. According to the Mosul flash appeal, the anticipated displacement will happen through four main exit

routes and most of them may head towards the stable areas in the KRI and Northern Syria ‘Rojava’ especially, towards Erbil and Hasaka. On the field, a large number of displaced people have already taken sanctuary in Dibagah camps near Erbil where at the time of writing the number has reached a staggering 38,000. The BCF operation sources estimate that on average 250 displaced people arrive in Dibagah every day. The situation has had a great impact of the humanitarian operations of the BCF in Dibaga (where BCF undertakes the camp management). As it can be noted from the existing report, a large proportion of BCF’s humanitarian operations have taken place in Dibagah camps (22 activities in total).
