Rich Lane’s Piano Alley is the Bartow Chamber’s Business of the Month. Left to right: Rich Lane and Chamber Membership Services Director, Barbara Adamson

Rich Lane

Follows His Dreams By Sharon Casey

If you don’t know how to play the piano, walking into Piano Alley will make you wish you did. The pianos in the showroom are so beautiful they seem to reach out and call your name. You really can’t help but to want to take one home – something that Rich Lane can arrange for you.

Lane returned to his roots back in Jackson, Michigan. Having a love for music, Lane managed a Grinnell Music store selling Hammond organs. While working at Grinnell, he also attended Michigan State University and received an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Born and raised in Jackson, Michigan, Rich Lane came from a large family - including four brothers and three sisters. Being tired of the hustle and bustle of life in Michigan, Lane’s parents moved the family to Florida when he was eleven. They landed in Siesta Key, where his father opened a business with a couple of friends.

In the meantime, the Lane family left Siesta Key and moved to Lakeland, where his father and brothers, Phil and Mike, started MacLan Corporation. Being homesick for his family, Rich Lane moved to Lakeland in 1975 and happily began working for the family business, a manufacturing company specializing in urethane rubber and metal fabrication. Lane was such a people person that he spent much of his time doing the marketing for MacLan.

Lane joined the Navy in 1968. He served for four years; and, after leaving the Navy, rather than going back to Florida,

After 50+ years in manufacturing and marketing, Lane left it all behind in 2014 to follow his dream. With the support from his wife, Nancy, of 25 years, he opened Lakeland Piano – now known as Piano Alley. Ten years ago, a stroke halted his ability to play, but not his determination and passion to put the love of music in children’s lives. He saw a need for placing his showroom in Central Florida and it is located at 2810 South Florida Avenue, Suite A, in Lakeland. Piano Alley offers a full line, from concert grand pianos to keyboards featuring the newest digital technology. Piano Alley is an authorized exclusive dealer for Kawai in the Central Florida market. Lane and the staff of Piano Alley pride themselves in offering an exceptional line of instruments at competitive prices. The goal of Piano Alley is to give the area the ability to have the finest instruments available to customers at fair prices. They also work closely with schools, so that every child has an opportunity to express themselves and improve their minds and self-esteem. In addition to Kawai, Piano Alley carries other makes and even has a pre-owned section of pianos and organs to fit every budget. The showroom staff at Piano Alley makes the decision process comfortable and affordable, knowing that, generally, a piano is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. They guide their customers in the right direction, helping them make the right decision and strive to ensure that each one is treated fairly and with respect. At the end of the day, Rich Lane just wants to make people happy.

Rich Lane Piano Alley provides the keys to your child’s musical future – offering piano/keyboard, drum and guitar lessons, Lane said. “Students can expect to advance in their musical desire through the efforts of an incredible teaching staff.” Lane has a goal to enrich the lives of children through music. Piano Alley offers private instructions and group classes. Senior Citizens who have always wanted to play an instrument simply for the enjoyment of themselves and friends, are also offered a a class. Piano Alley also offers piano repairs, restoration, moving and tuning. Lane feels that if he had not moved forward with his dream someone else would have. “I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity, and I thank God and my staff for the success of Piano Alley. I could not do it without them,” he said. Lane is very proud of each one of them and is grateful for the talent that each brings to the table. To quote the mission statement of Piano Alley – “We seek to give our children the lifelong opportunity to have the treasure and enjoyment of music in their lives. We provide an environment so all can realize that music is fun and rewarding. We offer instructions for the beginner to the accomplished musician.” Piano Alley is open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and by appointment only on Sunday. For more information, visit Piano Alley online at www.lakelandpiano.com; call 863-583-4320; or email lakelandpianos@gmail.com.

Called to Serve

Dr. Thomas McMicken By Jennifer Baker

Few figures have had a longer or more profound impact on the Bartow community than Dr. Thomas McMicken. He’s a Vietnam veteran, a former Mayor, and a board-certified family medicine specialist who has served the needs of patients from the Watson Clinic Bartow location since 1986. These distinctions only scratch the surface of his fascinating life story. Dr. McMicken first recognized the importance of community eight decades ago in the small town of Salem, West Virginia. “We had a population of a little over 2,000 people,” he reflects. Born on November 6, 1937, he recalls a childhood filled with the comforts of family and the camaraderie of close friends. Growing up with seven siblings – including three older brothers and four sisters – he characterized himself as a typical kid who loved sports. “I followed one of my older brothers in my love of sports. We played a lot of sports together in high school,” he says. “At Salem College, I continued to play baseball, basketball and football.” Though he enjoyed his time on the field, it was the medical profession that ultimately determined the course of his life. He decided to follow another of his older brothers to Jefferson Medical College (now called Thomas Jefferson University) in Philadelphia, PA, the alma mater for some of the most influential medical innovators in American history. He graduated with his medical degree in 1963 and went on to perform an internship at Mount Park Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, which is now Bayfront Health. He was well on his way to advancing in his chosen career path when fate stepped in with other plans. The war in Vietnam was raging, and Dr. McMicken temporarily put a hold on his educational

pursuits to answer the call of duty. He was drafted into the Army as a Battalion Surgeon, and trained at both Ft. Sam Houston in Texas and Ft. Benning in Georgia before his deployment to Vietnam in 1965. He ended his period of service as Captain of the 1st Air Calvary. He would continue to indulge in his love of aviation throughout most of his life. In the summer of 1965, following his one-year stint of proud patriotic service, Dr. McMicken returned to Bayfront Health to perform his general surgery residency. “I was interested in many different aspects in medicine,” he says. “From cardiology to delivering babies to performing trauma surgery, I did it all.” He moved to Bartow in 1967, and he’s remained there ever since. “I like small towns, and Bartow was a perfect place to raise my kids,” he says. His first practice was a collaboration with fellow physician Dr. Clyde Gibson. In 1986, he was courted to join Watson Clinic as its first family practice specialist. He quickly set a standard of excellence to which the clinic strives in all of its departments and endeavors. But his beloved medical practice is just one way he’s set a high standard for others to follow. For more than 50 years, his drive to serve the Bartow community has been a reassuring constant. Dr. McMicken was elected to the City Commission, as the Mayor of Bartow for one year, and as Vice Mayor for two years. He served on the Bartow Airport Authority for three years and as Chairman of the organization for one year. He’s a former President of the Polk County Medical Association, and was Chief of Staff at Bartow Regional Medical Center for six terms. He was a founding member of the group that implemented the Chamber’s Leadership Bartow program, and served as Chairman for the Health & Human Services Day for many years. A member of the Bartow Rotary Club since 1968, he has served on many local committees including the talent show, the Bartow Interact Club, scholarship committees, and singing groups. He even played Santa Claus for many years at the Bartow Rotary’s Children’s Christmas Party. He has received many awards including the first Physician Community Service Award from Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, the Medal of Merit from the Bartow Rotary for services within his profession, the Republican National Committee Physician of the year in 2003, and the Spirit of Bartow Award recipient in 2014. The medical board member for the American Cancer Society, Dr. McMicken is also Chairman of the Polk County Citizen Oversight Committee, President of the Homeowner’s Association of Square Lake, and he served on the Bartow Memorial Hospital (now Bartow Regional Medical Center) Foundation Board. His many accomplishments, awards and appointments can be listed in detail, but his influence on the growth and wellbeing of the Bartow community is too vast to measure. You can see it in the warm reception he receives when he enters any venue in the city. You can feel it in the warmth and appreciation of generations of patients who have entrusted their care to him over the years. His personal life has been every bit as gratifying as his professional one. He’s been happily married to his wife Kathleen for 52 years. They have two sons and one daughter, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There’s little doubt that life has blessed Dr. McMicken. But Dr. McMicken has also blessed all of us – the entire Bartow family – with his life of dedicated service, compassionate outreach, and medical expertise. “I’ve become more idealistic as I’ve gone along. I am a committed Christian and try to guide my life by the biblical admonition to do all things as if you do it unto the Lord,” he says. “Medicine is a serviceoriented business – it really is friends taking care of friends. When I think about the friends I’ve made over the years, and the families I’ve been able to care for, I am deeply appreciative.”

A-C-T to Celebrate 30th Anniversary This Year The 30th Anniversary of any corporation is a once-in-a lifetime achievement that deserves recognition. Considering the average company stays in business less than seven years, those that last certainly have reason to celebrate. This year on November 9, A·C·T Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc. (A·C·T) will celebrate 30 years in business. Founded in Lakeland in 1987 as American Compliance Technologies, Inc., the business expanded its brand by adding the A·C·T d/b/a status to further encompass the growth of consulting and contracting services. A·C·T’s corporate headquarters is located in Bartow at 1875 West Main Street. With six regional offices, this multi-disciplined “full-service” professional engineering, environmental & earth sciences, infrastructure, and field services firm has Florida and the nation covered. Now that’s something to celebrate. Rob Kincart founded A·C·T with a firm philosophy for success. A·C·T strives to provide risk-mitigating and cost effective solutions to its customers’ needs, while delivering an incredible customer experience. “We know that if we take care of our staff, our staff will take care of our customers,” Rob noted. “We accomplish this by only hiring the best and brightest team members who thrive on delivering results through their Attitude, Contribution and Teamwork.” With a growing list of 80+ employees, many who have been with A·C·T for more than 10 years, and some who have been there 20+ years, Rob is very proud of the fact that A·C·T was named “Best Places to Work” by both Florida Trend magazine and CareerSource Polk. “We know that our folks spend a majority of their waking hours at work, so we take our job of providing a great work environment seriously,” he added. Like many successful businesses, it takes a family who is committed to giving back to the community. Two of Rob’s three children – Jeff Kincart and Jennifer Kincart Jonsson serve as Vice Presidents of A·C·T. Jeff’s wife, Julie, works with our administration group, and Jennifer’s husband, Eric Jonsson, is a Certified Industrial Hygienist in the Science Department. The Kincarts and Jonssons, along with A·C·T employees, are more than involved in the community – they are SUPER involved – serving on charitable boards and raising awareness and funds for many worthy organizations. In fact, Jennifer was just elected to serve as the 2018 chairperson for the United Way; and employees pitch in to make the annual A·C·T Chili Cookoff a big success – raising funds for United Way of Central Florida. “What truly makes me happiest is having people come up to me or our folks who are wearing A·C·T logoed apparel and say, ‘Thank you for what your company does in our community,’” Rob Kincart said, grinning. “It makes our staff feel wonderful, and lets me know we have made a positive impact. It’s also great for staff and business retention.” The 8th Annual Chili Cook-off on November 3 will kick off the A·C·T 30th Birthday Party. “Celebrity” judges and the community will taste more than 50 types of chili. Mark your calendars. Rob says, “Even if it’s 100 degrees in Polk County, it will always be Chili in Bartow!”

54th Golf Classic Set to Benefit the Florida Sheriffs Youth Villa The Annual Florida Sheriffs Youth Villa Golf Classic, now in its 54th consecutive year, began in 1963 as the Armour Invitational, then the US Agri-Chemical Championship, and finally evolved into the Youth Villa Classic in 1972. The Classic features a 54-hole major golf championship, considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in the state, and includes Andy Bean and Bob Murphy as winners. A women’s only tournament is the only one of its kind with statewide participation. Thousands of youth and their families have received help from the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches since 1957. The Florida Sheriff’s Youth Villa Classic is a major fundraiser for the Youth Villa, and has raised more than $1 million, with all of those funds used to benefit the Bartow facility. Proceeds generated from this event built, furnished and continue to maintain Peace River cottage. The golf tournament designates enough funds that each senior receives everything other seniors receive such as a yearbook, class ring, prom ticket, dress, shoes and the opportunity to have her hair done. Tournament organizers also purchased two new vans from the event’s proceeds. The Youth Villa is very proud and grateful for all the support that has made it possible to provide quality residential care, youth and family counseling, educational and vocational training and recreational activities. The Youth Villa Classic enables the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to continue the mission of preventing juvenile delinquency, and developing lawful, productive citizens through a broad range of family-centered services. Through the leadership of the Sunshine State Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Florida’s Sheriffs were urged to create a sister program to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. The idea was to provide the same structure, opportunities and guidance for troubled girls from around the state. A location was soon found at the Peace River Park in Polk County. Through the joint efforts of the City of Bartow and Polk County Commissioners, and with the approval of the Mobil Corporation, the Youth Ranches was granted a 99-year lease for the land at $1 per year. In April 1971, construction began on the second residential child care facility of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.

June Business of the Month

The first girls moved to the campus in 1972. With continued improvements, the Youth Villa has grown to include additional cottages, pastures for horseback riding, a barn, activity building, administration building, chapel and boat dock. Today, the Youth Villa campus has the capacity to serve 46 children ranging from ages 3 to 18. These youth are given the opportunity to become productive, law abiding members of the community.

New Sculptures at

Fort Blount Park A Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting for the sculptures in Fort Blount Park took place on April 26, 2017. Everyone was encouraged to bring scissors to help cut the ceremonial red ribbon. This year’s sculptures include: Bruce Niemi’s Wind Whisperer, which is a stainless steel sculpture located at the corner of Broadway and Main; and Adam Walls’s Seigle and Shuster, a bright red sculpture that is located at the corner of Main and Carpenter. The two sculptures will remain on display in Fort Blount Park through February, 2018. SUMMER 2017

Celebrate the Fourth ... Bartow Style! Bartow’s hometown spirit shines at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Mosaic Park with fireworks, cotton candy and lots of musical entertainment. Each year the Bartow Fourth of July Committee plans an event that is fun and has a great meaning behind it, Chairman Frank Rouse said. Known as “Mr. Fourth of July,” Rouse is in his 37th year of leading the planning with a “good group of local citizens who are very devoted to the project,” he said. The city’s Parks & Recreation Department helps with the setup; and after all these years, everyone knows what needs to be done to make Independence Day a great red, white and blue celebration. As usual, the celebration, which will be on Tuesday this year, kicks off with the Bartow Adult Concert Band’s free patriotic program at 2:30 p.m. at Bartow Civic Center. Opening ceremonies for the Fourth of July celebration are at 4 p.m. and the fun lasts all evening, concluding with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. In between, there’s lots of time for food, carnival fun, live entertainment and catching up with friends and family. Bartow’s unit of the National Guard will return with a display of vehicles and equipment. A moment of reflection for the fallen and the National Anthem will remind us of the meaning of Independence Day. The night’s “Fireworks Extravaganza” will be presented by the City of Bartow and the Fourth of July Committee. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, bug spray and patriotism. While corporate sponsors help defray some of the costs, financial help is still needed. Even small contributions help pay for entertainers,

Kiwanis Club Cryin’ Towel The Bartow Kiwanis Club’s event, the Cryin’ Towel, Thursday, August 3, 6:00 p.m., kicks off the community football season. “Kickoff” (dinner) starts 7:00 p.m. and features a Texas Cattle Company steak with baked potato and side dish. The program, in which area high school football coaches “cry” about how awful their teams are, begins at 7:30 p.m. Door prizes, a drawing, free beer as well as a cash bar are featured at this fun event. Come hear the “blubbering” coaches and cheer for your favorite teams, all for only $50 per person (must be 21 and older). The event takes place at the Bartow Civic Center. Tickets are available by contacting any Bartow Kiwanian. This fundraiser benefits the many Kiwanis Club charitable projects.
