Living Legends: Trees of Heritage Importance planted in Bart rton t Court rtt Road by wart rtime t visitors to Milton Parish.

1894 sale of Barton Court Estate map

Barton Court Avenue and Barton Court Road were created in about 1894 and were clearly visible on the map of the first sale of the Barton Court Estate in that year and in the 1898 Ordnance Survey Map. Travelling from Station Road to the cliff tops you cannot fail to notice that the long, straight road and avenue are bordered by some fine trees. The view, in spring and summer is especially lovely.

He appears to have done this at his own expense. He encouraged other residents to fill in gaps and add to the existing specimens.

In a post-war edition of the Milton parish magazine, Reverend Kellsall wrote that “The ash tree near Bykanor House was planted by a Belgian refugee during the Great War […] and three sycamores near the top of the Avenue were planted by Indian soldiers during the same period”.

Study of the Ordnance Surv rvey v maps of the period combined with a 1934 directory ryy listing house names shows that Bykanor House is halfw fway w along Bart rton t Court rtt Road. There is a pollarded ash tree outside the house today.

Pollarding is method of pruning trees to deliberately keep them to a smaller size and reduce the size and weight of the crown of the tree. This also helps to prolong the life of the tree.

In the parish magazine of December 1915 Reverend Kelsall wrote that “some more memorial trees now stand

alongside the Belgian tree in the “Avenue des Nations”, planted by the representatives of four Indian nations, namely Jamadar [Lieutenant] Sita Ram (Marhatt tta) t Niak [Corporal] Gobar Singh (Garw rwali), w Niak Makand Singh (Sikh) and Sepoy [Private] Fateh Noor (Muslman). Two European nations and the English army were represented at the planting ceremony, and a few words were said in three languages of India”.

The soldiers were patients at the Indian Army Convalescent Depot at Bart rton t on sea. The Depot was run for Indian soldiers from 1914 to 1916 and then British and commonwealth troops until 1918.

In a post war parish magazine note Reverend Kelsall once again appealed to local residents to fill in the gaps along the tree line.

He wrote “If the Avenue (for it is really all one avenue) were bordered with fine, well grown and healthy trees, it would be an even more striking feature of the place than it is now”.

From the notes in the parish magazine, we can see that the

Confusingly in one note he wrote that the trees the four named Indian soldiers had planted, ‘stood alongside’ the Belgian tree. This would put them somewhere near the centre of Bart rton t Court rtt Road.

His post-war parish note states that three sycamores were planted ‘near the top end of the avenue’.

Is that Bart rton t Court rtt Avenue? Does the top end mean near the Indian Convalescent Depot memorial? If we take note of the Reverend’s comment describing Bart rton t Court rtt Avenue and Road as ‘really all one avenue’ would the ‘top end’ be located in Bart rton t Court rtt Road near to the Station Road end? If the Reverend had named four Indian soldiers in the planting ceremony why were there only three trees mentioned post war?

There is a sycamore tree opposite the ash tree outside Bykanor House and four more sycamores near the cross roads and Pantiles end of Bart rton t Court rtt Road. There are no sycamores visible in an around the area of the Indian memorial. However, in both Bart rton t Court rtt Road and Bart rton t Court rtt Avenue there are tree stumps and evidence of where trees once were.

In conclusion the ash tree planted by the Belgian refugee outside Bykanor House has been identified. There are four sycamore trees located at either end of Bart rton t Court rtt Road. They have been pollarded and their life extended. They are within the right age range to have been planted in 1915. It is probable that at least three of them were planted by the Indian soldiers named in the Parish magazine.

It is hoped that furt rther t research may identify fyy which sycamore trees are linked to the Indian soldiers. These trees are living legacies to the Belgian and Indian guests who stayed in New Milton and Bart rton t on Sea during the First World War and as such are an import rtant t part rtt of our local heritage.

The spring is a good time to identify fyy trees by their buds.

Paul Brockman BEM

Woodlander & Conservationist Paul Brockman is a local man who, following a career change became a woodlander and conservationist. We last meet Paul in 2017. Since then his work was recognised by a recent award of the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s honours list.

Paul is married and lives locally.

He was for twenty-five years a social worker, helping children who were in care, transition into the adult working world. In 2010 Paul had an opportunity for a change in career. He has always loved the outdoors and living in the New Forest. He decided to become qualified as a bush craft instructor.

He studied the subject under the tutorship of John Rhyder, of the Woodcraft School in West Sussex. The course taught Paul about all of the necessary elements of woodland survival, fire, water, shelter, crafting or making items from the natural environment, natural history, first aid, orienteering and lesson planning.

After qualifying Paul started to build up his business as an instructor. He contacted

Hoburne Bashley caravan park to see if they had any need of his skills. They took him on as a woodland manager and he ran bush craft courses on their site.

Paul found that Hoburne Bashley had about twenty acres of woodland in two parcels.

Sadly it had been neglected for decades and was largely a tangled overgrown wilderness.

Hardly any light was getting to the woodland floor. Holly and other invasive shrubs were stifling growth of different plant species. Paul gave a presentation to the management at the site outlining what he could do to turn this into a lovely woodland area again. The management team backed him and Paul was given the go ahead. Local residents had concerns that the woodlands would be decimated.

Paul was able to assure them that this was not the case and that his work would bring the woodland back to life and help provide habitats for a large variety of species.

Paul did so well in his first years work that the difference was soon noticeable. Hoburne

Bashley decided to take him on as a full time employee in the role of Woodland Manager.

Once the woodland was under proper control Paul set up an outdoor class room in the woods. He started running courses for schools to bring children to the woodland to help them reconnect with nature, learn skills and gain natural history knowledge. (See pictures below left & right) Schools reported back that the courses had helped some children to gain more positive attitudes, overcome communication difficulties and begin to gain the ability to carefully follow instructions.

Paul was amazed and humbled to be given this award which was announced in the 2021 New Years honours list and London Gazette.

Paul’s inspiration comes from several sources. First, Dave Dibden at Pond Head who has been Paul’s mentor. Intestacy - the risk of dying without a Will In England and Wales, intestacy arises when a person dies without leaving a valid Will. It is estimated that over 50% of the population have not made a Will this is usually because they don’t believe they need one.

A partial intestacy can also happen if part of a Will is invalid, for example if a beneficiary has died without a substitute beneficiary being named in the Will.

Many people don’t realise that getting married automatically revokes or cancels their Will. It is therefore important to make a new Will if you get married.

So if you die without a valid Will what does the law say will happen to your house, savings and investments?

after that it will go to any living grandparents, if all the above fails it will go to any surviving aunts or uncles, then to your cousins. If none of the above can be tracked down it will go to the Crown, meaning it goes to the government.

If you have a spouse and children then it will be more complicated. Currently the first £270,000 from your estate will pass to your spouse, and the remaining estate will be split so that half goes to your spouse and the other half will be divided equally between all your children.

Here are some examples, which illustrate how the intestacy rules can result in some unintended consequences…

If you die leaving a spouse or civil partner - but no children, then the whole estate will simply pass to your surviving spouse (even if you are separated from your spouse). However an unmarried partner is unlikely to be entitled to anything.

Jeff died suddenly without leaving a valid Will.

His estate was worth £500,000. He was married to Fiona and they had an infant daughter. Jeff had been estranged from his eldest son Tom for 18 years, but Tom was still entitled to £57,500 from Jeff’s estate.

If you are not married, then your estate will automatically be shared by any children (or your grandchildren) you might have. If you don’t have any children or grandchildren, then there is a strict order of entitlement depending upon who is still alive. In the first instance it will pass to your surviving parents.

If they have predeceased you then it will go to your siblings, then to your nephews and nieces. It will then go to your half siblings (where you share either a mother or a father),

Sheila had a valid Will, but her sole beneficiary had died without Sheila naming a substitute beneficiary. After a lengthy search her estate eventually went to her only surviving relative - a cousin who lived in Canada, who Sheila had never met.

Kerry and Hannah had been in a relationship for 9 years. Kerry died suddenly without a valid Will. Her estate went to her elderly father who was in a care home. Hannah received nothing.

Vanilla Roulade

This months recipe is a lovely, light and tasty dessert.

You will need a Swiss roll tin, some parchment paper, two mixing bowls and an electric whisk.

Heat the oven to 180c and line the Swiss roll tin with the parchment paper.

Whisk the egg whites in one of the bowls and when stiff add a tablespoon of the caster sugar - beat again and leave to one side. Beat the egg yolks and rest of the sugar till pale and stiff then fold in gently the egg whites and the flour.

6 eggs separated 5oz golden caster sugar 2oz plain flour 1/2 pint double cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar vanilla extract fresh strawberries

Pour the mixture into the tray and level it out gently trying not to knock out too much air. Place in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. When it is cooked turn out onto another piece of parchment then slowly peel off the paper it was cooked on and allow to cool.

Whisk up the cream and add the icing sugar and vanilla.

When the sponge is cool I like to sprinkle a little alcohol on the sponge, either sherry or masala is nice but it is optional. Spread the cream on the sponge leaving about a half an inch clear on one long edge.

Slice the strawberries over the cream and using the paper roll up the cake from the full side and gently roll onto the plate. Pull the paper away and it will roll neatly onto your dish. Dust with a little more icing sugar and serve in slices with more strawberries on the slice.

I hope you love this as much as I do, it is light and great for a dessert or an afternoon tea treat.

NEW MILTON NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GOES TO REFERENDUM The New Milton community will have their say on whether to adopt the New Milton Neighbourhood Plan at a Referendum on Thursday 6 May 2021. All eligible residents are encouraged to vote.

The Plan, finalised after wide-ranging community and stakeholder consultations, has passed Examination and is now being submitted to Referendum for local people to vote on the adoption of the policies. If, at Referendum, over 50% of those voting support the Plan, then this will become a formally adopted document that will be a material consideration in planning decisions. The Parish will also benefit from increased developer contributions for investment in local infrastructure – known as Community Infrastructure Levy. If less than 50% support the Plan at Referendum, then the Neighbourhood Plan will be dropped.

This ambitious and inspirational Neighbourhood Plan promotes affordable homes, a new Youth facility, new green spaces; and the community’s Vision for a vibrant town centre that is a social and economic hub for shopping, living, working and leisure – with new shops and eateries, a wellbeing centre, an iconic community hub, a heritage centre and flexible office space.

Voting on the upcoming County Council elections, Police Crime Commissioner elections as well as the New Milton Neighbourhood Plan, can be made at a polling station or by postal or proxy vote.

You must register for postal voting by 20th April and proxy voting by 27th April. The Difference Between Dealing with Feeling and Healing What brings people to healthcare is usually what they are feeling: pain, pins and needles, numbness, weakness, poor control, unsteadiness, desperation, hopelessness, or just a feeling of being out of sorts. People often want to feel better and do not consider that to achieve this they need to heal better.

Both what you are feeling, and how you are healing, are controlled by your nervous system.

Your brain communicates with the rest of the body through the spinal cord, and out through a myriad of nerve complexes, to every cell in the body. These nerves then send information back to the brain about the state of play within your body (your health). The quality of the communication between the brain and the body (i.e. the health of the nervous system) largely dictates the degree of healing that can be achieved.

“Pain is all in the Brain”

This is a true statement, but one that annoys me because it is glib and unhelpful without context. The pain sensation is generated in the sensory cortex area of the brain - true. However, this region of the brain takes input and interacts with many other regions of the brain and body. So pain can be a whole body experience.

The Point to Pain

There is a good reason why we feel pain!

It alerts us to danger and is designed to have you change your behaviour.

Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to mask pain with pharmaceutical measures rather than deal with the causes of the pain and optimise our healing potential.

How Long Will It Take Doc?

This is the big question that everyone wants the answer to on their first visit.

Not that easy to answer though. Not least because what most people want to know is when they will stop feeling their symptoms – this is something no one can tell you because only you can feel what you can feel! Also, almost all symptoms rely on a threshold that is not measurable in each individual.

Factors Effecting Healing

1. Age – It takes longer to heal as we age.

2. Pre-Existing Conditions – Especially diabetes will slow healing further.

3. Nutrition – Poor nutrition will slow healing; vitamin A, C, D, E and Zinc will promote it.

4. Temperature – The good news (now that summer is coming) is that cold weather can slow healing, while sunny weather can speed it up (this may be because of Vitamin D effects).

5. Drugs – Anti-inflammatories, both non-steroid and corticosteroids, can actually slow down the healing process, as inflammation is actually the first phase of healing!

6. Nerve and Blood Supply – If the damaged tissue is not well-connected to the rest of the body, healing will be slow and incomplete.

Healing takes time – Sorry but it does.

Healing is a dynamic process, not an event.

People who say they heal quicker than everyone else just stop feeling quicker. Their pain threshold may be higher than others, but the rate of healing is dictated by the physiological processes involved.

We do know the text-book answer of the healing times of different tissues. For optimum healing, these processes must proceed unhindered over the period of time it takes to turn over the damaged tissues and to lay down new tissues.

A good rule of thumb for most musculoskeletal conditions: if you have not healed within 6 to 8 weeks it is classed as a chronic condition. It is likely that there is an issue with the nerve supply to the damaged tissue and this is where chiropractic can provide the difference.

Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Sensitive Plant At last! Spring has sprung and nature is back to its full splendour of life, growth and colour. The birds are singing, the flowers are in bloom and butterflies, bugs and insects are all emerging.

On a serious note, this is a critical time, most garden birds will now have their first brood in the nest. Any efforts you have made to fill your birdfeeders over the winter months should now be rewarded with visits from resident robins, sparrows, and blue-tits and great tits.

Blackbirds will jostle the pigeons and take the seed overspill from the ground. The dawn chorus increases

intensity, and the shift in our March clocks takes us toward summertime.

This change of timing coincides with the emergence of smaller mammals. You may now see hedgehogs in your garden in the evening as well as less popular moles. If you have a garden pond, please ensure you have a piece of wood or a branch that can provide a ramp out of the water, just in case any of these smaller creatures tumble into the water and can’t get out again.

Flowers are the most obvious sign of spring; their variety, fragrance and colour are noticeable everywhere. In woods and hedgerows, it’s easy to spot splashes of yellow primrose, marsh marigold and cowslips. For me, the crown jewels of spring are the sapphire blankets of bluebells and April is usually the best time to see them. These indigo gems can be appreciated in many wooded areas in the New Forest at this time of year.

If you are venturing into the New Forest please be aware of ground nesting birds, the

lapwing (above), nightjar and curlew. These breeds are rare due to being disturbed by people or a loss of habitat.

Please stick to the main tracks during breeding season.

Two’s company Gary and I have never had two dogs at the same time before and so the past 7 months have been quite a learning curve. Not only are our two vastly different ages, but they are also very different personalities. Bugle is very laid back, enjoys his routine and takes most things in his stride whereas Bertie, well, he is just a lively and loving puppy.

It is amusing to see how they have worked out the pecking order between themselves. Despite being very laid back, Bugle is top dog. Both are fed at the same time, but Bugle rarely eats his all at once, Bertie usually eats his all in one go. The interesting thing is that if Bertie leaves anything, Bugle will

finish it up, but Bertie NEVER touches Bugles’ food. Recently, we decided that Bertie could progress to a big dog bowl but as this was stainless steel and the same as Bugle’s he would not eat out of it, so we had to revert to his small ceramic bowl.

At this time of year, when the back door must be closed, Bugle used to take it upon himself to get me up as soon as I sat down by asking to go out. Now we have two it is like the changing of the guard!

One will go out, ask to come back in and then the other will go out and so it goes on. Still, it helps keep us fit!!

One thing that they both agree on is the morning walk. They know that after breakfast we will take them out and so they line up in the hall so we cannot forget. We usually walk them together for part of the time, but Bugle cannot go so far these days and he does not like it when Bertie and Gary head off without him.

There is no doubt that two dogs, particularly this size means, twice the mess and twice the food bill but the double joy we get from them makes it all worthwhile.

Each year hundreds of artworks are submitted to be considered by the panel of professional artists who select the exhibition and award the prizes. St Barbe is proud to provide this showcase for the wonderful creations of our local artistic community.

Despite two years of lockdowns and disruption the St Barbe Open has continued and returns this spring for its 21st showing. In the unprecedented circumstances of 2020 and 2021 the Open has given local artists a chance to display the fruits of their creativity during enforced periods of isolation. Last year works referenced the challenges of lockdown and were inspired by the wonders of nature that we have the good fortune to be surrounded by here in the New Forest.

The exhibition is open to any artist, amateur or professional, who can submit up to two paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics or textile works. Usually around 80 are selected and shown to stunning effect in St Barbe’s national-standard galleries. There is no theme and the judges only selection criterion is quality.

A wide range of subjects and media is guaranteed including the beautiful, the strange and the humorous. Prizes sponsored by Kate Welsh, Coastal Gallery and Beaulieu Fine Arts

are awarded for the best print, abstract and work by a non-professional artist, while the Lymington Business Centre Award gives all exhibition visitors a chance to vote for the People’s Choice prize.

For the last three years the museum has also run a Young Artist’s Open which welcomes entrants from a few months to eighteen years old to exhibit alongside the adult entries, encouraging our young people to get creative from their earliest years. Long-time St Barbe supporter Gordon Young generously offers four ‘Ted Marsh Awards’ in cash and artists materials in memory of the museum’s founding chairman.

Local History

Highcliffe Castle - The Visitors

I’ve been on my travels during lockdown. No, don’t misunderstand me, as I’ve followed the rules and stayed at home as I’m sure you have.

I mean, of course, I’ve been on my travels in my columns, often to Bournemouth, as I’ve been writing ‘fillers’ to compensate for not been able to flit about and do my usual interviewing, photographing, researching and generally getting into mischief on your behalf.

I’m coming home this month though. It occurs to me I’ve not written about Highcliff ffe f Castle much, which is an omission, this resurgent phoenix being regarded in some circles as ‘the most import rtant t surv rviving v house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture’ (late-18th, early-19th centuries). Who am I to argue? Buildings are made by the people who inhabit them, so I thought I’d ponder some of the castle’s famed visitors.

Royalty has featured prominently, unsurprisingly given Highcliff ffe’s f handiness, looking out at the Solent and Isle of Wight. The first to rock up was the impressively titled Queen Adelaide of SaxeMeiningen (1792-1849). The year was 1842, Victoria had been on the throne five years, and Adelaide was her aunt by marriage, having been the queen of William IV, Victoria’s uncle, who’d preceded her on the throne. If you’re wondering, we usually regard William (the ‘Sailor King’ as the last of the Hanoverians, or Georgians (the German lot). Apparently, Adelaide was considering leasing the castle as a winter pad, had a nose about, but didn’t commit.

It was amazing really that all Victoria’s nine children lived to adulthood. I digress, but it’s a rth point wort t making. Most notable among the clan was eldest son ‘Bert rtie’, t Prince of Wales and Edward VII to be (1841-1910) who visited and stayed numerous times as prince and monarch. We know when he visited in 1880, he was accompanied by his sons, ‘Eddy’ (1864-92) and the future George V (1865-1936).

Adelaide did bett tter t than her niece. Victoria planned to visit in that same year of 1842 but couldn’t wrench herself away from Osborne House. Her brood did her proud though, with five of her nine kids, and 15 grandkids gracing

All these royal visits were overshadowed though by the three-week stay of the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II (1859-1941), in 1907. Wilhelm was immensely popular during his stay, visiting Christchurch Priory ry, y where he signed the visitors’ book, and heading via motorised cavalcade into Bournemouth. A lot of Brits still clung to the hope that we had more in common with the Germans than the French. Seven years later, however, Britain and France would be allied against Germany in WW1 WW W and Wilhelm’s standing in this country ryy went from hero to zero as he became utterly reviled.

It wasn’t always royalty and I’m going to give a shout out to William Ewart rtt Gladstone (180998), four-time Liberal Prime Minister who apparently enjoyed ‘a real comfort rtable t rest’ when he visited in 1889. Our area featured in the great man’s story ryy again in 1898 when he gave his last impromptu public address at Bournemouth station, before heading home to die. He’s one of only two individuals whose coffi ffin fi has been conveyed on the London Underground, the other being Thomas Barnardo. Another digression.

Authoress Nancy Mitford (1904-73) was the eldest of the ‘Mitford sisters’, six siblings who included four writers, a fair of fascists, a communist and a duchess among their number.

Quite a cocktail. Nancy, who was considered an authority on ‘manners and breeding’ (much like myself) f)) rated her visits to Highcliff ffe f ‘among the truly happy times of my life’.

Other visitors who perhaps would be referred to as ‘celebrities’ today (but hopefully not ‘influencers’) included Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931), the Australian-born soprano, who sang in St Mark’s. She was born Helen Mitchell but adopted the nom-de-plume ‘Melba’ from her home town of Melbourne and had the peach melba named aft fter t her.
