Local History

Miltonian in a Mushroom Cloud

In Milton Parish there are many residents with fascinating stories to tell of the part they played in events in this country’s history. One man, now happily living in retirement with his wife Pam, is Reg Robson who in the 1950s was involved in the British atomic bomb tests in Australia.

A furt rther t navigation course consolidated the skills he had learned in basic training and taught Reg more technical skills to equip him to flying on fast jets. At the end of this course Reg had flown 148 hours in dayt ytime t and 51 hours 30 minutes at night.

Other training courses included a short rtt pre operational conversion course involving jet familiarisation on Gloster Meteor twin engine jet fighters. The next course Reg attended was at the Bomber Command school where he was taught how to be a bomb aimer. Aft fter t successfully passing this course Reg went to 231 Operation Conversion Unit at RAF Bassingbourn where he was trained to operate the English Electric Canberra. This aircraft ftt had been introduced into RAF serv rvice v in May 1951 and could fly higher and faster than most aircraft ftt of the time.

Reg was born and brought up on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. It was here, at the age of 15 he met Pamela, also 15. They have been together ever since. On leaving school he applied to join the RAF as a pilot. Aft fter t various interv rviews v and aptitude tests he was off ffered f the opport rtunity t to train as a navigator.

Reg attended RAF Cranwell for offi fficer fi training from 9th of September 1952 to the 21st of January ryy 1953.

He passed out of Cranwell as a Pilot Offi fficer fi and was posted to the Air Navigation School at RAF Hullavington. It was here that Reg received his basic navigator training in aircraft ftt such as the Vickers Valetta and the wart rtime t Avro Anson. These were twin engine aircraft ftt adapted as flying classrooms for trainee navigators. Reg was taught how to track plots on the map and how to use radio navigation equipment such as GEE which was a very ryy accurate piece of wart rtime t navigation equipment. He was also taught how to use a sextant and navigate without the aid of electronic devices. In addition Reg carried out night flying exercises to train him to navigate in the dark.

Reg was crewed up with Flying Offi fficer fi Jock Burt rton t who would be his pilot for most of his time on Canberra bombers. On this course the pair of them trained to work as a team and become totally familiar with their aircraft ftt and its equipment. In addition the crew practiced bombing attacks on targets using small practice bombs.

In January ryy 1955 Jock and Reg passed the course and soon aft fterw t rwards w were posted as an operational crew to 76 Squadron at RAF Wittering. Here they practiced all that they had been taught and became ever more proficient. Flying was not without its dangers. On the 24th of March Reg records in

his log book that their aircraft ftt suff ffered f a double ‘flame out’ – both engines failed, at 30,000 feet.

They managed to get them restart rted t at 15,000 feet. As the year went by they were tasked with more and more cross country ryy navigation exercises and practice bombing sessions including simulated attacks on designated targets.

In January ryy 1956 Reg, Jock and other 76 Squadron crews were deployed to RAF Weston Zoyland near Bristol. Here they practiced navigation by day and night and use of all radio navigation aids. In March 1956 it was announced to the public that this detachment was going to Australia to take part rtt in Atomic Bomb testing as part rtt of Operation Buff ffalo. f On the 4th of July 1955 the group set off fff from Weston Zoyland flying to Australia via Pakistan, and Singapore. They arrived at Pearce Field, Pert rth t on the 11th of July aft fter t a long gruelling flight.

They were then handed in overshoes which they donned before exiting the aircraft ft. t Reg and his colleagues were required to strip off fff their flying kit and go into port rtable t shower cubicles. Aft fter t showering they were issued new uniforms.

Reg recalls that their Canberra was left ftt behind at Maralinga airfi rfield. fi He and his crew came back to the UK by ship. On his return he was off ffered f the opport rtunity t to train for another role. He elected to fly in Fighter Command and ended up involved in the air defence of Great Britain as a navigator on Javelin all weather fighters.

On 11th of October 1956 Reg as equipment operator, Jock as pilot and Pat Lowe as Navigator along with a Wing Commander Eyre who was overseeing their health and welfare took off fff from Maralinga airfi rfield fi in Canberra WT754 WTT for phase 3 of Operation Buff ffalo. f They observ rved v a Vickers Valiant bomber drop an atomic bomb. This was the first time the British had dropped an atom bomb from an aircraft ft. t Reg and his crew were not there just to witness. They were required to fly into the mushroom cloud of the exploding bomb, open their bomb bay and collect samples of radioactive dust from the explosion. Reg recorded in his log book that they did this on three occasions and spent

At the end of his 12 years of serv rvice v with the RAF Reg left ftt and became a salesman. He is plagued with health issues probably linked to his involvement in the Op Buff ffalo f trials. He and his family have been happily settled in our town since 2000.

Alvin Reid

New Milton Town Mayor This month we meet up with New Milton Mayor, Councillor Alvin Reid and hear about his interesting career in the Royal Navy and defence industry. On retirement he became a local councillor and is now the current New Milton Mayor.

Alvin was born in Preston in Lancashire. The family lived in a small village called Grimsargh.

Alvin’s parents were the butcher, grocer and greengrocers in the village. Alvin was, at an early age working behind the counter serving the public. Serving the public was the theme for the rest of Alvin’s life.

In July 1966 at the age of 15, Alvin joined the Royal Navy. (See photo opposite page) After basic training at HMS Raleigh he went on to be trained in the maintenance and support of communications systems .

on board the famous aircraft carrier HMS Hermes when it went on a round the world deployment. He also served aboard HMS Sheffield which years afterwards, was sunk Alvin had a variety of postings during the Falklands war in both shore based and at sea. He 1982. spent two years in Gibraltar in a communications centre. He was In May 1978 Alvin left the Royal Navy and started work for Marconi the defence engineering company. Alvin’s new role was as commissioning engineer for communications systems in new warships. Later in his Marconi career his assignments included deployments to Libya & Qatar as a field service engineer for several weeks at a time. In addition Alvin was also deployed to the Clyde shipyards in Scotland to oversee the installation of the latest communications systems in brand new warships.-In 1984 Alvin moved to Plessey again

working in a communications role. This time it was providing supportability design for communications in military systems.

It was whilst working for Plessey that in July 1986 Alvin was promoted and posted to Christchurch. Alvin and his then wife looked around the area for suitable places to live. New Milton seemed ideal. It was close to his place of work, on a main railway line and had banks, a library, good schools for their two sons and a host of other amenities.

With his children going through Milton schools Alvin and his wife became heavily involved in helping local groups and organisations. Alvin’s wife was a governor of New Milton Infant School. Alvin soon became involved in helping the PTA. He was also involved in coaching

the Hordle Bees youth football team and along with his wife ended up on the club management committee. With all of Alvin’s nautical experience he volunteered to help the Barton Sea Scouts and was the safety boat coxswain every Friday evening from May until September whilst the scouts were on the water. In addition to helping youth groups and schools, Alvin joined the New Milton Lions in 1998 and was the president of the local Lions group in 2000 -2001. Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie

This is a lovely warming dish for the autumn which has come all to quickly! You will need a large non-stick saucepan, a small saucepan, a whisk and the dish you want to cook it in.

Assemble the pie filling ingredients and heat up a tablespoon of oil and the butter in the non-stick pan - when it is foaming add the chicken and season. Turn gently until it is cooked for about 5 - 8 minutes. Take out the chicken and place in the dish you will be cooking it in. Take the pan off the heat then add the flour with the whisk. Then add the cream and chicken stock, return to the heat and stir to stop any lumps - slowly bring to the boil. While the sauce is cooking quickly blanch the leeks for around 3 minutes and strain - run them under a cold tap in the strainer to keep the bright green colour.

For 4 people you will need 4 legs of chicken ( get the meat taken off the bone or get the equivalent in skinless thighs) About 4oz per person of cooked ham in a joint and cube it about the same size as the chicken 2medium leeks chopped to about 1inch chunks Olive oil 4oz butter 3oz plain flour 1/2 pint cream 1/2 pint chicken stock Salt/pepper Either make your own shortcrust pastry or you can buy very good pastry already made but don't get the ready rolled as it is nicer to have the pastry a little thicker for a pie top 1egg to glaze

Once the sauce has boiled for about 5 minutes, take off the heat, add the chicken, ham and leeks and mix them - add them all into the dish and allow to cool whilst you make the pastry.

Once the filling is cold get ready to cover with the pastry.

Preferably the dish you have chosen has a lip around the edge, if it hasn't it doesn't matter but it is easier if it has. Roll out the pastry to about the thickness of a new pound coin, 1/4 inch, trim off the edge to about 1/4 inch strip all round and using the egg wash lightly brush the edge of the dish and secure the strip of pastry around the edge, or over the edge of the dish if there is no lip. Again brush lightly with the egg and carefully lay the rest of the pastry over the filling. As you have pastry underneath it is easier to crimp the edge. Pop into the fridge to allow the pastry to relax for about half an hour and turn on your oven to 180c. Turn down to 160c when you put the pie in the oven.

Finally brush with the last of the egg and place on a tray, to catch any drips. Bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown and serve with potatoes and plenty of fresh vegetables.

When it comes to mental incapacity, the world does not deal with it so well. Individuals and institutions are not prepared for it. At Dixon Stewart we do help the elderly, infirm or vulnerable and it is very important that we take instructions from them otherwise there is a risk that when they die or if they lose mental capacity such instructions will be challenged because they have been given under duress or undue influence or have been misunderstood.

As a solicitor’s office we receive many telephone calls from family members of a client who has lost capacity. They will insist that we must tell them about their relative’s legal affairs as they are the “next of kin” even though they have no formal authority in place. We have to use diplomacy and explain as tactfully as possible that they are not entitled to the information. We are not being difficult or obstructive during a stressful time. We are just explaining the situation.

As individuals it is important that we ensure people are protected and live in safety free from abuse and neglect. Age UK defines abuse and neglect as physical abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, financial or material abuse, discriminatory abuse, organisational abuse, neglect and acts of omission. Financial abuse includes theft, fraud, internet scamming, coercion in relation to their financial affairs or arrangements, including in connection with wills, property, inheritance or financial

transactions. Men’s Shed opens for New Milton

Nationally there are 517 Men’s Sheds, at least 40 in Hampshire, including the New Milton Men’s Shed, a thriving initiative with an enthusiastic membership, occupying a workshop building at the Fernhill Sports Ground courtesy of New Milton Town Council.

During the first week of September, the official opening ceremony featured a ceremonial cutting of the cord by the New Milton Town Mayor, Cllr Alvin Reid (photo above right) using the appropriate tools for the job, aided and abetted by the New Milton Men’s Shed Chairman, Adrian Duckett.

Geoff Blunden said “I’m delighted that we have been able to help in getting the New Milton men’s shed group up and running by providing their first home. Bugle at the Festival As readers will know, Bugle has been getting out and about this year with trips to Portsmouth, Scotland and the Lake District.

He ended the summer on a local note with his annual pilgrimage to the Gin and Beer Festival – I didn’t really want to go but he insisted!!!

We set off on one evening armed with our own chairs (nothing left to chance!) and parked close by with enough room to let down Bugle’s steps. Before we had even finished getting him out of the car he was recognised and given a fuss by a couple

just leaving the venue. This was a good start as far as our pooch was concerned!

The venue was busy but there was sufficient room to set up camp in the shade – we were fortunate that there was no queue but the security guards were doing a head count of people arriving and leaving and decided that Bugle warranted a click on the counter as a full sized person! At the table next to us, there was a family with a black Labrador.

Needless-to say,

Bugle attracted the attention of the young girls, in particular a young lady called Grace who basically sat down with him on the grass. For the rest of the evening Bugle was in doggy heaven as he received continuous fuss and petting.

During this time, Gary and I were forced to drink gin and beer and eat the delicious food on offer – the things we do for our dog!

Eventually Grace and her family left and Bugle decided that he was ready to go home. As we left, I reminded the security guard to click him out! Bugle has left the building!

Highcliffe Sports & Social Club

As with many places in Highcliffe, the Sports and Social Club, on Lymington Road, has a connection with Highcliffe Castle

Highcliffe Sports & Social Club.

Lady Waterf rford, f the castle’s then owner, opened a reading room in 1887, which morphed into the Social Club in 1903. The club would later be extended, in 1965, with the honours perf rformed f by the then mayor, Mrs I.A. Stevenson.

20th June 1887 was, of course, the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, who had ascended the throne 50 years before (20/06/1837). This explains the bestowal of the reading room at that time and why a representation of the queen looks down from the front of the building

Opening reading rooms was common practice in Victorian England, as the local wort rthies t valued ‘self-improvement’ and did their bit to generously provide facilities for the workers. It is diffi fficult fi to know what the budding philanthropist would do in today’s Britain, where fewer people read books. Perhaps they might provide a room where bods could charge up their pesky smart rtphones. t Sorry ry, y I’m galloping off fff on my hobby horse again.

I digress. There is a painting in the main hall of Maj. Gen. The Hon. Edward Stuart rtt Wort rtley t (1857-1934), a distant cousin of Lady Waterf rford, f who acceded to Highcliff ffe f Castle when Lady Waterf rford f died childless. The painting was presented by Wort rtley’s t daughters, to the Club, which he founded, in 1903.

Today’s social club is non-political and non-religious, so sounds like the kind of place you head for if you prefer to avoid contentious deliberations. In the centre of Highcliff ffe f Village, it prides itself on being the friendliest club in the whole of the South, so it cert rtainly t doesn’t lack ambition.

Perhaps, in saying that, it’s just comfort rtable t that it’s achieving its mission statement. The club is open every ryy day of the year, including Christmas Day, when it closes earlier.

There’s a wide range of activities and entert rtainment t going on here seven days a week (including snooker, pool, dart rts, t poker, TV, TV V live music, retro nights, dancing (including line dancing and jive night), keep fit, quiz nights with raffl ffle, fl and bingo).

Volunteer-led, our aim is to offer non-professional carers the regular opportunity to unwind and socialise, thereby sharing concerns and finding companionship with others in similar circumstances.

On 14 October, our meeting will be a purely social occasion, thus affording you plenty of time to chat with fellow and former carers or just sit back and relax over light

refreshments, which we serve to your table in an informal, cafe'-style setting.

Play on Words Play on Words is New Milton’s second family friendly Literary Festival organised by Forest Arts Centre and New Milton Town Partnership with sponsorship from project partners New Milton sand and Ballast and Pennyfarthing Homes. Events are continuing throughout October at local venues, the launch event is the Book Lovers Lunch at The Chewton Glen on Friday October 11th with guest speaker Barney Norris. An award-winning playwright, author and poet from Salisbury, Barney will be talking about his latest novel The Vanishing Hours.

Highlights of the 3-week programme include meet the authors with local crime writers Vickie Goldie and Peter Windridge – Smith. Karen Hamilton teams up with Helen McGinn for an evening of cocktails and thriller writing.

There is a Literary Walk around New Milton and a chance to test your knowledge at the Literary Quiz. You can learn about writing your memoirs at a workshop with Della Galton.

During half term there are creative family camps with the highlight, a comedy show for

children and adults with James Campbell who has been on Blue Peter and performed at the Royal Albert Hall. Theatre performances include Chekhov’s shorts, Shakespeare Explained, Shylock and Pantaloons present Othello.

The final event on Sunday November 3rd is a talk by popular author and politician Alan Johnson.

As you can see local residents and visitors are warmly invited to engage with literature in the broadest sense with an intriguing, challenging and high -quality diary of performances, workshops and creative events planned. Successful service leads to busy buses Yellow Buses has doubled the number of buses going to New Milton after the route extension proved such a hit. The 1a service now goes from Bournemouth town centre every half an hour between Monday and Friday.

It stops at Christchurch, Somerford Sainsbury’s, Highcliffe, New Milton and the Tesco in New Milton.

“As a town council, we are working to improve health and wellbeing and this service is another opportunity for people to leave their cars at home.

The Friends of Ballard Water Meadow will be holding their Annual General Meeting for 2019.
