WELCOME FROM CEO SAUL F. LEVENSHUS Welcome to the 2020 Winter/Spring JCC Program Guide. Inside this edition you’ll find a full array of programs and services designed to educate, enrich, and entertain you. As always the Guide is intended to complement our monthly Center Peace publication by providing our members with a time sensitive snapshot of the vast variety of programs and services we offer from January through June. You will see from the table of contents on the inside front cover that programs are listed by constituent groups beginning with early childhood and continuing through services for adults. Interspersed you will find a series of program advertisements describing upcoming events, special projects, and new initiatives that may be of interest to you. 2020 promises to be another great year at the J… and some of the highlights this semester include our ever popular Spurs Youth Basketball leagues (page 12), our 19th Annual Jewish Film Festival (page 16), Winter, Spring and Summer J-Camps (page 10), STARZ and NOVA Children’s Theatre productions (page 9 and 11), and our Author & Speaker Series (page 17). Then, of course, we’ve got The Sheldon Vexler Theatre’s 21st season (see page 15), which this season has already opened up with sellout crowds attending Neil Simon’s contemporary comedy God’s Favorite, and the Pulitzer Prize winning Dramedy, Driving Miss Daisy. We enter 2020 with our 3rd production, These Shining Lives, a historical drama by Melanie Marnich; and close the season with a thoroughly enjoyable and inventive comedy, Watson: The Last Great Tale of the Legendary Sherlock Holmes. It has already been another award winning season for the Vexler Theatre, and there is still time to get your tickets before our last two productions sell out.

to access information and sign up for the programs that you care about most. Download our new app from the Apple or Google Play Store (learn more on the back cover or from our courtesy desk staff) to manage your account, access schedules, update your information, register for programs, and check-in upon your arrival to the facility, all from your phone. If mobile isn’t your thing, our website also offers these same great features. These updates were all made with YOUser friendliness in mind, so we welcome feedback about your experience and we plan on continuing to roll out updates to our website and app that will allow you to further engage and connect with us even more in the near future.

If you’re looking to improve or maintain your fitness levels, you’ll want to check out the variety of sports and fitness options listed throughout this guide. From the full complement of cardio and strength equipment in our Hendin Fitness Center, to the more than 60 hours of free group exercise classes offered each week (page 19), you’re bound to find something to your liking; or maybe you would like to try a series of small group personal training sessions (page 21). If tennis is your sport, I would strongly encourage you to check out the variety of tennis programs (page 13 for youth and page 22 for adults). Throughout the cooler weather months, our Tennis Clubhouse provides both the convenience of a place to warm up after an energizing winter tennis class or league match as well as a place to meet and greet friends to make your tennis experience more complete.

I am really excited about the year of programs and services laid out in this program guide, and I want to reaffirm how important your continued support remains to the JCC. The United Way’s decision earlier this year to eliminate over $300,000 in support funding from our Early Childhood, Children and Youth, and Senior Adult Services has created a unique challenge for the JCC (along with many other community non-profit agencies) unlike anything we have experienced in nearly two decades. While our volunteer and professional leadership are fully committed to identifying the resources necessary to continue providing the same high quality programs and services that our community has come to expect from us, your ongoing support and participation remains essential and we’re glad you belong here!

And remember, while temperatures for the next few months will fluctuate between the 30’s and 60’s, our pool remains one of the very few heated lap pools in the area that provides a series of year-round programs and services for both children and adults. For those of you who took advantage of our new Splash Pad this summer and early fall, while it is now closed for the winter months, it will re-open before we know it as warmer temperatures return on a consistent basis. At the J, we are always looking for ways to improve your member experience. We are happy to introduce our new and improved online portal and mobile application which will make it easier for you

I hope you will continue to keep us informed about how we’re doing. We learn a great deal from the feedback we receive from our members and it helps us to develop new programs and make adjustments to existing services to make them more effective. For your convenience, you may use any of the following methods to tell us about your experiences at the “J”. You can call us, fax us, email us, fill out a comment card at one of our information desks, or set up a time to come by and visit with us. Your input helps us improve our services and increases the value of your membership. Enjoy looking through our 2020 Winter/Spring Program Guide and thank you for your on-going support.

EARLY CHILDHOOD The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children: where play and learning connect! Our curriculum is founded upon the richness of Judaic tradition and values and learning is promoted through play and hands-on experiences. The joyfulness of childhood is honored and nurtured and creativity is promoted. We have a strong focus on children’s academic development through an approach that fosters a love for literacy, math and science. Each day we provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth that prepare children for kindergarten. In our NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited program, children develop research, inquiry and critical thinking skills. Children construct meaning from their learning environments which seamlessly blend the richness of Jewish values, traditions and holiday celebrations into our early childhood education. In our state-of-the-art classrooms, our children are encouraged to embark on an exploration of concepts, gain awareness and understanding of literacy and numeracy, and become more articulate, competent, and confident individuals. The early childhood program is a JCC member-exclusive program. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ecd for more information and call 210302-6846 to set up a visit to our school.

Community Is Our Middle Name

The Block and Dreeben School For Young Children at the Barshop Jewish Community Center is a special place where children are valued and loved. We focus on high quality care and education of young children. We also value families & community. Our “Community Building Goal is to bring our families together for meaningful experiences in which parents can connect with their children and other families. We have a monthly “Community Kabbalat Shabbat where all the classes come together to celebrate and families are encouraged to attend and bring other guests. We have hosted “Community Dinners for specific age groups where the families shared a meal and attended a parenting workshop while their children played in their classrooms. We have had “Community Playdates where children from one classroom visit other classrooms and play together. We also collect “Community Tzedakah every week so we can pool our resources and help members of our San Antonio Community. We love celebrating our school community, our JCC community, and our San Antonio community!

During the school year the Early Childhood Department (ECD) will offer various parenting workshops. • All workshops are offered twice - 9:30am and 5pm to accommodate family’s busy schedules. • These helpful workshops are FREE to JCC Members and $10 to the general community. • Participants leave the workshops with new techniques, parenting tips, and the ability to respond to challenging behaviors with newfound effectiveness. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ecd for dates and topics or call 210-302-6846 for more details.

Counselor-In-Training Want to spend summer learning valuable leadership skills in a fun and rewarding environment? The JCC’s CounselorIn-Training program is open to teens entering grades 9 or 10 in the fall of 2020. While assisting with Summer J-Camp, CITs gain real life experience in problem solving, decision making, and being accountable.

Jump on the BBYO Bandwagon! BBYO is a pluralistic Jewish teen movement rooted in engaging more Jewish teens in meaningful Jewish experiences. San Antonio is home to two chapters, Erich Weiss AZA (boys) and Sababa BBG (girls). As a youth-led organization, BBYO provides Jewish teens an opportunity to build lasting friendships, develop leadership skills, strengthen their Jewish identity, and enjoy good times with other Jewish teens. BBYO members build confidence and character by planning programs, governing a chapter, working with community partners, and serving as champions for charitable or philanthropic causes.

Since 2005, J-Serve has been a global force in empowering Jewish teens to make a difference in their communities. Every year, Jewish teens come together for a day of service based on the Jewish values of gemilut chasidim (acts of loving kindness), tikkun olam (responsibility to repair the world), and tzedakah ( just and charitable giving). This year J-Serve will be taking place on March 29, from 9 AM-3:30 PM. J-Serve San Antonio is an excellent way for Jewish teens in grades 7-12 to learn about service, meet Jewish peers and create a difference in their local community.

THINK INSIDE THE BOX

These Shining Lives

Watson:

by Melanie Marnich

The Last Great Tale of the Legendary Sherlock Holmes

Based on the true account of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company watch factory in the late 20s and early 30s, the play chronicles the danger women faced in the American workforce, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees. The story relates the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day. They are dying, it’s true; but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits - or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

his is the story of a good man trapped in the shadow T of a great man. Funny, moving, and theatrically inventive, this high-energy play balances witty comedy and dramatic mystery to recount the last great tale of the legendary Sherlock Holmes as seen through the eyes of his friend and colleague, Dr. John H. Watson. From pantomime to Punch and Judy, and with the theatrical ingenuity of Broadway’s The 39 Steps, Watson tells a grand tale that will captivate audience members until the very end! (Based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.)
