WELCOME FROM CEO SAUL F. LEVENSHUS Welcome to the 2019 Winter/Spring JCC Program Guide. Inside this edition you’ll find a full array of programs and services designed to educate, enrich, and entertain you. As you’ll see, programs are listed by constituent groups beginning with early childhood and continues through services for adults. Interspersed you will find a series of advertisements describing upcoming events, special projects, and new initiatives that may be of interest to you. There’s something about this place®… and some of the highlights this semester include: our ever popular Spurs Youth Basketball leagues (page 12), our 18th Annual Jewish Film Festival (page 16), Winter, Spring, and Summer Camps (page 10), STARZ and Nova Children’s Theatre productions (page 9 and 11), our Author & Speaker Series (page 16) and of course, The Sheldon Vexler Theatre (page 15), now in its 20th season. The final two productions this season promise to be outstanding with a combustible comedy Leading Ladies (Feb. 9- March 3), followed by the ever-popular musical, Cabaret (May 4-June 2). We are very excited that our patrons have become acquainted with and our utilizing our online event ticketing system that provides you with the convenience of purchasing your tickets and choosing your seats right from your home computer, tablet, or phone for both the Theatre and many of our Arts & Entertainment events. If you’re looking to improve or maintain your fitness levels, you’ll want to check out the variety of sports and fitness options listed throughout this guide. From the full complement of cardio and strength equipment, to the more than 50 hours of free group exercise classes offered each week (page 20), you’re bound to find something to your liking; or maybe you would like to try a series of small group personal training sessions (page 19). If tennis is your sport, I would strongly encourage you to check out the variety of tennis programs (page 13 for youth and page 22 for adults). Throughout the cooler weather months, our Tennis Clubhouse provides both the convenience of a place to warm up after an energizing winter tennis class or league match and is also a place to meet and greet friends to make your tennis experience more complete. And remember that our pool is heated and provides a series of year-round programs and services for both children and adults. And beginning in January, we are happy to announce that our Aqua Fit and Power H20 classes will be incorporated into our FREE Group Exercise class offerings. As you’ll see per the ad on the back cover, our website has recently been redesigned with new vibrant graphics, menu navigation and more providing you with up-to-date information to keep you notified of what’s going on at the J with links to register for classes, purchase tickets to events, and to provide us with feedback. And speaking of feedback, I hope you will continue to keep us informed about how we’re doing. Your feedback helps us to develop new programs and make adjustments to existing services to make them more effective and your membership more valuable. Use any of the following methods to tell us about your experiences at the “J”: call us, email us, fill out a comment card at the courtesy desk, speak with a staff member, or set up a time to come by and visit. EARLY CHILDHOOD The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children: Where Play and Learning Connect! Our curriculum is founded upon the richness of Judaic tradition and values, and learning is promoted through play and hands-on experiences. The joyfulness of childhood is honored and nurtured and creativity is promoted. We have a strong focus on children’s academic development through an approach that fosters a love for literacy, math and science. Each day we provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth that prepare children for kindergarten. In our NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited program, children develop research, inquiry and critical thinking skills. Children construct meaning from their learning environments which seamlessly blend the richness of Jewish values, traditions, and holiday celebrations into our early childhood education. In our state-of-the-art classrooms, our children are encouraged to embark on an exploration of concepts, gain awareness and understanding of literacy and numeracy, and become more articulate, competent, and confident individuals. The early childhood program is a JCC member-exclusive program. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ecd for more information and call 210-302-6846 to set up a visit to our school.

Parenting Workshops

Register online at www.jccsanantonio.org/register. Babysitting is available for JCC Members at our usual J-Care rate by calling 210-302-6820. How to Raise a Future Adult Isn’t it our ultimate goal of parenting to end up with an emotionally adjusted, contributing member of society? As parents, we’ve been given the tremendous responsibility of raising the next generation of leaders. In this workshop, we will discuss strategies to help get your child to become their best future selves. Learn skills to help the transition from child to teen to young adult.

Got Challenging Behaviors? Get Positive Parenting Through Setting Limits Sometimes children’s behavior can be challenging for adults. Join us as we learn how to change a situation from difficult and negative to positive and productive. This workshop will focus on why, when, and how to set limits with children. Learn how to respond to varying levels of challenging behaviors with effectiveness.

Why is My Child Not Listening to Me and What Can I Do When it Happens? Do you have to ask five times before your child does what you ask? Are you becoming more and more frustrated with your child? Join us as we discuss what parents are doing that is contributing to their children’s habit of not listening. Learn new techniques to get your child’s attention without frustration.

How to Turn Frustrating Moments into Playful Moments Much of our children’s frustrating behavior is developmentally appropriate. Play is an essential part of how children learn. When parents understand what drives kids and their behavior, they can do something besides getting mad at it. Learn to see the world and situations through your children’s eyes. This workshop will help you find ways to defuse many (if not most) frustrating moments with a dose of silliness and fun, while building stronger connections to your child.

BBYO is a pluralistic Jewish teen movement rooted in engaging more Jewish teens in meaningful Jewish experiences. San Antonio is home to two chapters, Erich Weiss AZA (boys) and Sababa BBG (girls). Juli Berwald Sunday, Jan. 13 | 5pm

In her book Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone, Juli Berwald, a former ocean scientist, goes in pursuit of the slippery story of jellyfish, rediscovering her passion for marine science and the sea’s imperiled ecosystems.

Blending personal memoir with distillations of science, Spineless reveals that jellyfish are a bellwether for the damage we are inflicting on the climate and oceans, and a call to realize our collective responsibility for the planet.

Gabrielle Birkner & Rebecca Soffer Sunday, Mar. 24 | 5pm

Let’s face it: most of us can’t handle talking about death. We’re awkward and uncertain; we blurt out platitudes or say nothing at all; we send sympathy bouquets whittled out of fruit to the shiva house. Modern Loss: Candid Conversations About Grief. Beginners Welcome., by Gabrielle Birkner (L) and Rebecca Soffer (R), can help us do better. Inspired by the website that the New York Times hailed as “redefining mourning,” this book - praised by Stephen Colbert and Mindy Kaling, among others - offers a roadmap for navigating grief and resilience in the modern age.

Last spring, the JCC delivered more than 70 beanies to Children’s Hospital, and this winter, we will deliver 12 blankets to Wounded Warriors. Join us as we continue our knitting & crocheting Mitzvah projects, making both beanies and blankets. No hook or needle? No problem! We’ve got you covered. Just show up; we’ll provide yarn, a hook, and plenty of laughter as we work on this special mitzvah. If you are interested in contributing to the initiative, yarn donations are welcome.
