Riverside South crash brings safety to forefront Accident because of construction, victim says DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN

A serious car crash in Riverside South has left one of the victims to question how safe the roadways and signage are for motorists in the area. Marco Santucci, 40, was nearly hit head-on by a 75-year-old man who veered into the wrong lane going over 110 kilometres per hour just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 7. Santucci was travelling northbound on Limebank Road between Leitrim Road and Tom Roberts Avenue when the accident occurred. He was barely able to steer his car toward the shoulder to lessen the impact of the collision. Ottawa police do not suspect alcohol

was a factor but the 75-year-old man was charged with careless driving in the crash, which also involved a third vehicle – a female driver travelling behind Santucci who suffered minor injuries. “The road is unsafe and people do get confused,” Santucci said, adding that turning onto Limebank Road is particularly troublesome. “I’ve seen people driving backwards because they turned onto the wrong side of the road. “People drive on the wrong side of the road all the time because of the improper markings. It’s not very easy for people to judge if they’re on the wrong side of the road or not.” However the city feels otherwise. See ‘Vintage’ page 3

Love, Barrhaven style NEVIL HUNT

Many of Barrhaven’s seniors took pride of place in the recent marriage of Ken and Kathy Blomquist. The pair met when they worked at the Court at Barrhaven retirement residence six years ago. The Court was later where Ken proposed. And the residents of the Court were some of the first to toast the couple’s July wedding. When they first met, Kathy, nee Hughes, was the Court

at Barrhaven’s activity director, and Ken the chef. Although Kathy left to return to school, her next job brought her back to the retirement residence from time to time. Over coffee, a romance blossomed. “Ken proposed to me in the dining room at the Court last October…in front of all the residents,” Kathy said. “There was a collective, “Aahhh!” from all the residents when he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. Both of Kathy’s sons have worked with Ken as servers in the dining room at the Court, and her youngest, Shaun,

still does. It was Shaun that walked her into the new Barrhaven Legion to give her away on the couple’s wedding day. Immediately after the wedding the newly-married Blomquists arrived at the Court to celebrate with their friends and family. “We went striaght there to have a champagne toast with all the residents,” Kathy said. Best wishes were shared all-round; the residents presented the couple with a poem written by Albert Lalonde and a gift.

Province targets construction workplace safety Ontario is launching an eight-week campaign with its health and safety partners to urge workers and employers to put safety first on construction sites across the province. The province kicked off the campaign at a construction site in Toronto on July 28, emphasizing the need for everyone on the job to train properly, be aware of dangers and keep everyone safe. The tour will be making a number of stops across the province including Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston and Peterborough. A new workplace safety toll-free phone number is also now available. The public and workers can call 1-877-202-0008 to re-

port labour practices or work conditions that appear unsafe. Sponsored by the Ministry of Labour, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association, the campaign targets construction sites and local offices with important information that will increase awareness of enforcement and safety. This campaign follows a recent 90-day safety enforcement blitz of more than 2,800 Ontario construction sites. During the blitz inspectors found many violations related to missing or inappropriate use of guardrails, scaffolding and fall protection systems and supervisor and worker training.

Alcohol and driving don’t mix well at any age It is official: as of Aug. 1, anyone aged 21 and under cannot have any alcohol in their system when getting behind the wheel. Previously, anyone who held a full G licence could have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.05. Following an announcement by the Ontario Transportation Minister and Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Monday morning, that number now only applies to drivers 21 and up. Young drivers who are caught with any alcohol in their system will face an immediate 24-hour suspension of their licence which could last up to 30 days with up to $500 in fines. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the peak ages of drinking and driving are 19 to 21. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba already have similar regulations in place. Some may argue that this new law is an example of ageism. Many young drivers are responsible and would be able to handle having a glass of wine and hitting the road responsibly later on. However, there are many who can’t. And that doesn’t just go for young drivers. Everyone handles their alcohol differently, depending on gender, weight, size, metabolism, etc. Over the years, countless police reports have come across the news desk about impaired driving. People of all ages, from teens to seniors, have been caught drinking and driving in Ottawa. What about the over-21 population who can’t seem to handle their alcohol? Drinking and driving does not seem to be going away anytime fast. It remains a reality, often ending up in tragedy. Perhaps limiting youths behind the wheel is just the beginning. It may not be a bad idea to start at the 16 to 21 demographic and work up from there. Alcohol and driving has never been a good mix.

To the editor: OC Transpo has denied equal access to persons with disabilities going to the Navan Fair. A shuttle service was provided by OC Transpo for people going to and from the fair. People using this shuttle were being charged regular transit fares and the shuttle ran every half hour. When I asked OC Transpo if regular urban fares would be charged to use ParaTranspo, I was told that the shuttle is a charter service and that those needing to use ParaTranspo would have to pay the Rural 2 Zone fare which is $9.50 (one way) or $19 return. ParaTranspo is funded by the city so why not include one ParaTranspo bus? I feel it is totally unacceptable that persons with disabilities including many seniors who must rely on ParaTranspo have not been included in the planning process. Catherine Gardner Nepean

Saying goodbye, but not forgotten Open letter to the Governor General, Your Excellency, once again, I write to you by means of an open letter. It is with sadness that I will see your term end, especially since the effort on behalf of our “Volunteer Veterans” has not resulted in any recognition. In April of 2007, I wrote to express how thrilled I was with the level of your activity as our Governor General. Your words were the fuel that encouraged me to continue looking for an honourable way by which all our troops, servicemen and servicewomen could be fully recognized for the act of “volunteerism.” Something each and everyone of them has fulfilled by dedicating a period of their lives, sometimes an entire career and even the supreme sacrifice in the service of Canada. Not since the end of WW II, (after March 1, 1947), has there ever been a

Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with the exception of the Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. At that time I also indicated that never had a Military Medal been directly attributed to Canadian Governor Generals. I had openly put forth the idea of the Volunteer Medal to be known as the Governor General’s Volunteer Service Medal (GGVSM). Since then, a GGVSM Petition was initiated in Parliament so Canadians could petition to our Government indicate their support to give honour and dignity to our medal-less Veterans. A very significant issue is the belief that Commonwealth countries hold to a specified period of retroactivity when it comes to Honours. Recently, in 2009, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth approved of the “Elizabeth Cross” and its issuance may be retroactive to as far back as 1948. Her Majesty also approved the Australian Defence Medal in 2006 and its period

of retroactivity 61 years going back to 1945. The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea was established in 1991 and was retroactive to the events of 40 years before. With the cessation of the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (1947) thousands of Canadians that have voluntarily served in our nation’s military forces have never been honoured or recognized by way of a “Canadian” Volunteer Service Medal and I believe that the GGVSM is still a worthy endeavour to right that wrong. It has been my honour to participate in this effort, and I still hold fast to your belief that anything is possible especially when it comes to bringing about a way to remember our Veterans. Health A life or death issue: Say no to salt Eastern Ontario has high rate of hypertension JENNIFER MCINTOSH

Health practioners are asking residents of the Champlain region to put the salt down as part of their “Give your head a shake” sodium reduction campaign. The campaign was launched in 2009 in partnership with the Champlain Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Network (CCPN) and the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Ottawa Public Health, the Eastern Ontario Health Network, the University of Ottawa’s Heart Institute, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Longterm care, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Stroke Network. The campaign is targeting residents aged 35 to 50, because they are aware that sodium is bad and are open to making changes for their own health and that of their children. “We think if we show them easy, everyday things that can be done to reduce the amount of sodium they consume, then it can be effective,” Turner said. Danielle Côté, communications specialist for the CCPN, said the work for the campaign started in 2007 by identifying hotspots for cardiovascular disease. “We zeroed in on hypertension because we know it can be helped by reducing sodium,” she said. “And the data we gathered in the region showed we had some pretty high risk factors. Obviously we are motivated to make sure our residents stay healthy. It’s all about preventative care.”

Hollywood in Barrhaven?

As Barrhaven’s housing developments continue to grow, at least one person thinks the community’s businesses should grow along with them. Rustin Hollywood, a ward candidate for the Oct. 25 municipal election, said that it doesn’t make sense for people to be driving away from Barrhaven to starting their working days. “There’s no reason why we should see buses in the morning empty to pick up people and take them elsewhere,” he said. “People who live in Barrhaven should have the opportunity to also work in Barrhaven. “We have a good, large employment base in Barrhaven and they should be able to take advantage of that.” The 38-year-old has 11 years of experience with the city, starting in the public works department before working in the city manager’s office for the last 4 ½ years. “This is where I feel my experience can

be best put to use,” Hollywood said. “I’m running here because I really believe it’s time for a change in Barrhaven and also a change of leadership on council.” As someone with a master’s degree in public admin and an undergraduate degree rural and regional planning, coupled with his job at the city, Hollywood has foreseen the growth of Ottawa’s south for quite a while. As a result, Hollywood is in favour of the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge construction, but feels more work on the roadways around the area are necessary. He said widening both Strandherd Drive – between Jockvale Road and highway 416 – and Greenbank Road across the Greenbelt would be his biggest priorities. “Otherwise we’re going to be experiencing a traffic congestion nightmare with Barrhaven,” he said. “The bridge is undoubtedly needed, and I’m glad that it’s going ahead, but there should have been some planning of having the infrastructure ready to handle the added traffic in advance.” Hollywood added that through going to events like the Legion’s grand opening on July 31, he’s heard positive responses to his campaign. “I’ve had favourable comments and many interested residents in Barrhaven that are looking for change to happen here,” he said. 378053

Airplane enthusiasts will get an Ottawa show in 2010, but it won’t be in the west end. Because of financial difficulties, Air Show Ottawa cancelled last year’s Carp airport showcase and will not run an event this year either. The organizers hope to have planes back in the air above Carp in 2011. For the fifth year, another organization – Flightworks – will present the Classic Air Rallye on the grounds of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum at Rockcliffe Airport, on Aug. 28 and 29. This year’s highlights include: • A salute to the Westland Lysander aircraft. For the first time in 20 years anywhere in the world, three of these iconic aircraft will come together at the rallye. • A lineup of Second

World War-era aircraft, bush planes and amphibians in the air and on static display. • The world’s most advanced fighter, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter inside the aviation museum, where you can also fly the F-16 and F18 cockpits and simulators. • Military re-enactors in Second World War uniforms and vehicles, including vehicles from the Canadian War Museum collection. • A tour of the aviation museum’s storage wing and see the treasures not normally on display. • Visit the displays and booths commemorating the centenary of Canada’s Navy. Admission to the site includes entry to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. Two-day admission to the event is $20 for

She has also become a wellknown spokesperson across Ontario, speaking to the press as someone with considerable knowledge of the dairy industry and Ontario agriculture. The now 81-year old is a defender of farm practices and has emphasized that farmers are excellent custodians of land. Vera Mitchell and Dwayne Acres were recently inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in Milton for their decades of hard work in the agriculture industry. Osgoode Ward hosted a family barbecue recently to honour the two area farm owners who are also the first in the area to be recognized provincially. The event also served a dual purpose – proceeds went to the Close to Home Campaign raising funds for the Winchester District Memorial Hospital. More than 200 people came to event which was held at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds, Agricultural Hall. “It was extremely flattering,” said Mitchell. “I wasn’t expecting it.” Mitchell has impressive accomplishments both in the field of agriculture and her years as key owner/operator of Donevelyn Farms Limited since 1952. Her farm is made up of 1,000 acres and has four separate enterprises – dairy, a grain elevator, cash crops and custom cropping services.

been asked or invited to do as best I could.” Acres, who is synonymous with the success of the sheep industry across Ontario and Canada, owned Maple Meadow Farm from 1964 to 2007 with his wife, Laura. The farm was a 500acre dairy, sheep, beef and cash crop enterprise. “I was overwhelmed and honoured by it,” said Acres, referring to when he heard the news of being inducted. Throughout the decades, Acres has been a true leader in the sheep industry including genetics, performance testing, wool sales, judging, advocacy, marketing and record keeping. In the early 1970s, Acres was on the board of Ontario Sheep Breeders and helped change the membership so it included commercial producers and purebred breeders. From this, the Ontario Sheep Association was started and Acres was the chair in 1975. He has been heavily involved in the industry on the national level when he served as chair of the Canadian Sheep Marketing Council and president of the Canadian Sheep Breeders’ Association.

Yes, there is a problem with sick leave at city hall. the auditor general found that sick leave costs the city roughly $27 million a year. While that maybe in line with other cities of our size, the city is committed to always doing better. We’re hoping to reduce some of that cost that can be documented, to the taxpayers. City management monitors sick leave usage. If anomalies are found, we investigate and take appropriate action. To recommend hiring a $100,000 consultant to tell council that there is a problem, is not acceptable. 613-580-2424 ext. 31310

It sort of tunes the audience up. It gets them ready for us. It’s nice to have a band that you can actually go and listen to for a bit before the show.” Toronto-based band Staggered Crossing gets that chance on Aug. 21. As Blue Rodeo gets set to play at the Nepean horse show, Keelor insists the band doesn’t have to change its approach before playing a smaller-scale show. Even for a band that has played larger stadiums, the guitarist feels there is a certain appeal to playing events like their upcoming one in Nepean. “Sometimes those weird little shows are the most charming,” he said. “Sometimes the more weird it is, the more I enjoy it because it’s just so different than what we usually do.” Just like their time in New York before the band’s inception, Keelor said they’re not afraid of venturing outside of the norm – whether it’s where they play or how they sound. “I think it was sort of a goal at the beginning of the band to do as many different styles as we felt comfortable with and still sounds like a band. One of our great inspirations and mentors is a guy like Neil Young who can just go through so many different types of musical styles and still sound like his own,” he said, adding he looks up to the likes of Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot. “That group of people sort of invented the music that we play. We’re all just sort of copycats after that. I’ve stolen from them so much I should be in jail.”

It would seem almost unfathomable for any Blue Rodeo fan to imagine Greg Keelor without his trademark acoustic guitar. Like a hockey goalie naked without his pads, picturing the band’s co-front man without the softer six-string doesn’t seem quite right. But Keelor actually did spend parts of the early 1980s minus the popular instrument by his side. It was at the end of Keelor’s tenure in New York City with fellow now-Blue Rodeo singer/ songwriter Jim Cuddy. After getting their start in Toronto in 1978, the duo ventured to the Big Apple to check out the punk scene – a seemingly drastic change from the band’s current sound. “I didn’t even own an acoustic guitar ’til I think my last year in New York,” Keelor recalled. “I File photo always just played electric and Jim Cuddy, left, and Greg Keelor visit the Nepean National Equestrian Park on Saturday, Aug. 21 with Blue I wrote on electric.
