TAREN WILGAER VON HEIDELBERG WINS

TOURNAMENT OF THE COURTIER XX

A Report by Master John Inchingham the Fool

The twentieth Tournament of the Courtier was held on Saturday, October 5, 2012, in the Barony of Illiton. Lord Taren Wilgaer von Heidelberg won the competition. For his victory, Lord Taren received the traditional gold chess queen trophy (donated by Their Excellencies, Wilhelm and Alzbeta, Baron and Baroness of Illiton) and, of course, bragging rights for the coming year. The runner-up prize (The Painfully Orange Cloak of the Almost-But-Not-Quite-Perfect Courtier, donated by The Honorable Lady Sofia the Orange) was awarded to Lord Kurro Ookami.

The day’s rapier tournament (supervised by Warder Maire ingen Dauith) was won by Sir Ixtilixochitl. Sir Ix, who was not a Courtiers contestant, received a buckler (constructed and illuminated by Warder Damien Nihthauk). Of those fencers that were vying to be called the Perfect Courtier, Lord Joseph Tarenson scored highest. Lord Joseph won a rapier holder (donated by the late Lord Michael of Illiton) and chop sticks (donated by Lady Muriel Zimmerminnen).

The best fencing garb prize, as judged by Lord Setto Gesshuko, was awarded to Lord Taren. He was presented with two books: Michelangelo (donated by Master John Inchingham); and Medieval Design (donated by Lady Moricea Marceala de la Vail).

The give-away chess championship was claimed by Lord Alan Edwards. He received a small wooden box, decorated in a wolf motif, and a large wooden chest (both donated by His Grace, Duke Bardolph Windlaufer).

The Honorable Lady Lucia Elena Braganza served as judge of the bardic competition. Of those who performed, both Courtiers candidates and those who were not, Lady Lucia awarded highest marks to Lord Artair. Artair received a book about Lucrezia Borgia and a Punch and Judy scarf (both donated by Lady Ynes de Hyan), a goblet (donated Lady Moricea Marceala de la Vail) and another book, Medieval Humor (donated by Sheila Hufeld).

Warder Maire judged the extemporaneous speaking skills of the competitors. The prizes for this portion of the contest: a book, Inventions of the Middle Ages (donated by Sheila Hufeld); and sage from the garden of a fool were awarded to Lord Taren.

My thanks to the Autocrats (Lady Muriel and Warder Maire), to those who constructed and/or donated prizes, to those who served as judges, to those who lent chess sets, to those who constructed the lists, to the cooks and clean-up crew, and to any helpful gentles that I may have forgotten.
