Welcome Welcome to the August issue and what a month it’s been weather wise. Long, hot sunny days seem to have become the norm’, just like the school holidays used to be ‘when I was a kid’, happy memories and, of course, happy days! In other news the World Cup didn’t ‘come home’ so to speak - but Gareth Southgate and his team got back a lot of self respect and more importantly the support of the nation. I was lucky enough to be down at the ‘Footy Fest’ event at Elsecar Cricket Club, where they showed both the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final and the World Cup final on a big screen. A great day was had by all - well done to Hoyland Magpies for organising such a great local event. This month you might notice a slightly new look to the magazine, which I hope you like, and it also sees the introduction of a new regular feature in the magazine. Written by a local mum of two, Kelly Hardy from Hoyland, ‘Mum’s the Word’ is aimed at all our readers, but specifically at the Mum’s out there with articles that will be of specific interest to them. Here’s hoping that you like this new feature.

57

That’s about all for now, enjoy the holiday period, the weather (hopefully) and see you all next month.

LOCAL NEWS

The Glorious Wonder of Now Elsecar poet and author Nick Bingham has just published his latest new selfpublished poetry book, titled 'The Glorious Wonder of Now; Poems in the Present Moment'. A lot of Nick’s poems are directly influenced by visiting the beautiful Elsecar Park, the reservoir and the surrounding area. Nick can often be seen heading out on his bicycle with a pair of binoculars to mindfully observe the wonderful bird life and waterfowl. This combination of exercise and mindful appreciation of the surroundings is very beneficial for his mental health. This is what Nick tries to put across through the poems in his book. The book is available now on Amazon, Kindle and in paperback priced at £5.99.

CHARITY

Locky’s raise funds to help Little Fox’s The recent Stars in Your Eyes 15 charity fundraising event held at Locky’s Bar in Wombwell managed to raise an amazing £3,000 to help the Little Fox’s charity appeal. The Little Fox’s Barnsley Hospital Charity helps to provide financial aid to the people of Barnsley who are affected by cancer. The Stars in Your Eyes night is an annual event that Locky’s bar holds to raise funds for many local good causes. This year saw several tribute acts showing off their amazing individual talents performing as Rod Stewart, Meatloaf, Tina Turner, Beyonce and Lady Gaga. The night itself raised just over £1,600 but Locky’s bar themselves donated a further £1,400 to make the monies raised to an amazing £3,000. Well done to all concerned on a great effort.

Allendale’s helping to create Better Spaces Britain is a nation of DIY enthusiasts, with property owners spending a staggering £22 billion over the last year in an effort to do up their homes. This is according to research by Sainsbury’s Bank, which found that 79 per cent of UK ‘DIYers’ tackled a range of tasks from repainting floorboards to revamping the garden in recent months. Of those who said they have carried out DIY in the last 12 months, the average person has spent over £1,085, underlining just how seriously many people take home improvements. The garden is the most popular area to focus on when it comes to doing up your property, with 26 per cent of people asked admitting they plan to improve their outdoor space in the next months. It was followed by the bedroom (25 per cent), kitchen (22 per cent) and bathroom (20 per cent). But if something like tackling your outdoor space, no matter how big or small it may be,

Elsecar Park recognised as one of the UK’s very best green spaces

The Green Flag Award Scheme has recognised Barnsley's very own Elsecar Park as one of the best green spaces for the eleventh year running. Elsecar Park is among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that has received a prestigious Green Flag Award - the mark of a quality park or green space. Park staff, volunteers and Friends of groups have maintained the park and nature reserve to provide facilities for all of the family. The park and nature reserve has something for everyone and boasts the Tee Cup café, reservoir and a fantastic smoke-free play area. A recent innovative project turned the old sandpit into a cycle track for children to complement the cycle hire scheme, in partnership with Cycle Penistone CIC, where old bikes are restored and hired out for others to enjoy. The award has been announced during Love Parks Week which took place from 13 to 20 July. Throughout the week, Barnsley Council celebrated Barnsley’s parks and green spaces on Facebook and Twitter and encouraged residents to share their favourite memories from their local parks using the hashtag #LoveParksWeek.

Last orders at the bar for Phil & Vikki

In a few months’ time one of the most welcoming and, it must be said, loved local landlord & landlady, Phil and Vikki Hickling of the Milton Arms in Elsecar will be pulling their final pints as they’ve decided to sell their great little pub to a local developer. But fear not all you locals as the pub will not be closing, only for a short time that is during the month of November for a kitchen refurbishment, as well as having a larger conservatory built onto the pub. However, it won’t be changing all that much either, although there will be some minor alterations made inside the pub, including a small function room being opened upstairs, but in the main the pub will look pretty much similar to what it is now and retain its great character. Phil & Vikki took over at the Milton Arms in January 1986 and, almost 33 years later, having pulled thousands of pints of beer and raised in excess of a £150,000 for numerous local charities, they’ve decided to move on to pastures new after they received a surprise offer from a local businessman. Vikki told me, ”The offer came totally out of the blue and with all due respect to everyone concerned it was a good offer in our eyes and one that also had the future of the pub and the village in mind too. This is the reason we decided that it was time to leave. Phil & Vikki have made many, many friends over the years in their time at the Milton Arms and will no doubt enjoy their retirement safe in the knowledge that the Milton Arms has been passed on to good hands. Here’s to Phil & Vikki and hoping that you both enjoy a long and happy retirement, cheers!

ENTERTAINMENT

The Yorkshire In Me Following his appearance on Britain's Got Talent, the Real Music Centre in Wombwell are releasing a single featuring Audley Buckle. The Yorkshire In Me, written by Alvin Marper of the Real Music centre and his writing partner John L Crellin, the single was recorded and produced at RMC in Wombwell. The single is being released onto download and CD's over the next couple of weeks to coincide with Yorkshire Day on August 1st. I recently called in to see Alvin at the real Music centre on Park Street in Wombwell and he explained a little more to me about how all of this had all come about; “Acting on a recommendation Audley invited me to produce an album that he was putting together for his solo career. When he explained the concept and that the genre would be Reggae, initially I reluctantly turned it down. When Audley asked why? I responded by saying if he could see me he’d realise that I was about as far removed from Reggae as it’s possible to be.”

Audley persisted and eventually Alvin agreed to produce four of the ten tracks on the understanding that if he liked then he’d complete the album. Working with Audley turned out to be some of the most enjoyable hours that Alvin has spent in a studio and what emerged was a cross over album that has pleased Reggae and non-Reggae listeners. This association has now lasted many years culminating in Audley recording two songs written by Alvin and cowriter John L Crellin. ‘The Yorkshire in Me’ is an Anthem for Yorkshire; the bonus track All Rights Reserved is exactly that. Audley’s career has been long and varied. He was born in Jamaica, and started singing in village concerts at the age of three. In 1965, Audley left for England and moved to Huddersfield, where he performed with a number of soul bands, playing at various venues around England and Scotland. Later he signed with Steve Perriman Entertainments as a solo artist and mobile DJ. Audley learned the art of being a DJ very quickly and when Steve sold SPE, he set up his own company providing entertainment for major hotel chains, and also embarked on a solo music career, which reached a climax with his recent appearance on Britain's Got Talent, which has been viewed more than 50,000 times on YouTube. Alvin and John are delighted with Audley’s performances and are confident that you will be too. For more details on how you can get hold of a copy of ‘The Yorkshire In Me’ then please contact the Real Music Centre on 01226 341296.

TASTE OF BARNSLEY WITH A & K AT THE FITZ ELSECAR

Fish Friday at The Fitz

You can’t beat a bit of Fish & Chips on a Friday night and so it was off to the Fitz at Elsecar for our local food experts Allan & Kaye Burnett....

The Fitz at Elsecar has recently revamped their menu, responding to customer feedback, and having the desire to continue to produce good quality meals at a very reasonable price. We were delighted to be invited back to sample their new menu for ourselves.

We were there to try out the new ‘Fish Friday’ menu, one of their recently introduced specials, along with a revamped ‘Summer Menu’, whilst they have extended their ever popular (and excellent value for money!) ‘Half Price’ menu. This specially selected menu is now available until 5pm Monday to Friday! The Fitz has also kept their Saturday Steak nights too, which is excellent value at £22.95 per couple, and this includes a bottle of wine! The ‘Fish Friday Special’ is available from 5pm at a price of £18 for 2 people - this includes two main meals and two glasses of wine. The choices include traditional Fish and Chips, Scampi, Salmon Fillet or Creamy Prawn Tagliatelle.

The pub has a very friendly atmosphere and families are well catered for. The separate dining area provides a lovely place to enjoy a meal at any time of day, and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. They have an excellent selection of the current ‘in’ drink, gin, and have a ‘Gin of the week’ offer displayed on the bar. They also have a fine selection of beers and ciders for the more traditional clientele. In the restaurant there was a family party, celebrating an 18th birthday, and everyone seemed to be having a good time and enjoying their meals.

We decided to go down the traditional route on this occasion, opting for the traditional Fish and Chips, which come served with a choice of either Mushy or Garden Peas and Bread and Butter, and Scampi and Chips, served with Garden Peas and a Side Salad. Both dishes were cooked fresh to order and waiting time was minimal. The Chips were ‘proper’ chips, and just as they should be, crispy and golden, whilst the fish was encased in just the right amount of batter. Allan was delighted that the accompanying bread was cut the

TASTE OF BARNSLEY WITH A & K AT THE FITZ ELSECAR Overall, we felt this was excellent value for money and couldn’t fault the service from the staff. They coped well with serving the party whilst attending to other guests in the restaurant. All the meals that we saw looked delicious and I must admit to slight food envy when I saw the Prawn Tagliatelle!

‘right’ way, not in triangles, so he could make ‘a proper butty!’ The Scampi was a generous portion, and the crispy Side Salad was a fitting accompaniment. We both managed to clear our plates and decided that we would just about have enough room to sample one of the new desserts on offer. We opted for the Jaffa cheesecake and 2 spoons! All desserts are served with a choice of Ice Cream, Cream or Custard. Our cheesecake arrived with the requested 2 spoons and 2 scoops of ice-cream! Again, we managed to polish this off, and very nice it was too!

If the Fitz continues to provide such good quality food at such reasonable prices then I’m sure they will go from strength to strength. Their desire to give customers a relaxing and enjoyable evening is clear and we wish them every success with their exciting new menus.

LOCAL NEWS

Will’s artwork goes under the hammer Barnsley Sixth Form College student Will Ward is preparing to see his artwork go up for auction after wowing the judging panel of a young artists’ competition. Will, of Kingstone Grange, Kingstone, was one of 32 people aged between 11 and 18 to have work selected for auction through the Young Artists Collection competition. The theme of the competition was Yorkshire and 17-yearold Will submitted a piece depicting the Chennells pub in Barnsley town centre.

“I feel this competition is important as it gives young artists an opportunity to have their work sold at auction and because 40% of the money raised from the sale of each piece goes towards helping young people.”

Will said: “My Art and Design teacher Richard Kitson advised me to enter the competition and I chose the picture of Chennells as I felt that it was my strongest piece fitting the Yorkshire theme.

The Young Artists Collection competition is organised by IVE, a social enterprise working to ensure a more creative future for businesses, teachers, children and young people. The artist gets 60% of the money from sales and the rest is used to fund IVE’s charitable work.

“I’m happy that my work got selected for the auction, I didn’t expect it and my work has never been picked for something like this before.

METHOD 1. Boil the sweet potato chips for 5-6 minutes, or until just tender. Drain well and tip into a bowl, then toss with a little seasoning and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. 2. Put the red pepper and sweetcorn in another bowl, spray with low-calorie cooking spray and set aside. 3. Mix the chipotle powder, paprika and garlic salt in a small bowl. Spray the steak on both sides with low-calorie cooking spray and rub with the chipotle mixture to coat. 4. Place a large non-stick griddle pan over a high heat. When smoking hot, add the steak, red pepper and sweetcorn and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the steak and peppers over and shake the pan to move the sweetcorn. 5. Add the sweet potato chips and cook for a further 2-3 minutes, turning the vegetables frequently. Remove the steak from the pan and leave to rest for 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle the lime juice over the vegetables and shake the pan to coat well. 6. Put everything on a plate, scatter over the coriander and serve with a lime wedge.

It’s not often that I get to see a new business develop from start to finish, but in the case of the newly opened Pink Frog, which is situated at the bottom of the oneway system at 52 King Street in Hoyland, I can honestly say that this is one new business that’s not only unique, but as the potential to become very special indeed. Local lady Claire Blatch from Jump took on the former Vanity Box hair salon back in mid-April and the transformation inside the premises is nothing short of amazing as you can see from our pictures. The Pink Frog opened its doors last week offering a wide range of beauty services including a specialist make-up service with make-up for weddings, festivals and special occasions such as Halloween and party events being a particular speciality. Other beauty services that are available in salon include lash treatments & eyebrow packages, Henna art - again ideal for any special occasion, festival braids and face painting. So my first question to Claire was how did this all start? “I fell into to it really after I’d arranged a charity fundraising

event for my son, who unfortunately as a life-limiting illness. The lady we’d booked as a face painter let us down at the last minute and so I stepped in myself and did it. It turned out that I was quite good at it and very soon people were asking me if I did make-up as well. So I went on a course with a view to doing this on a part-time basis, I got myself qualified with a distinction as a level 3 make-up artist and from there it’s really taken off. “I’ve had a regular group of clients to the mobile side of my business, but now having the salon allows me the time and freedom to be even more creative which is what I like to be and, hopefully, my clients appreciate more. All of Claire’s work is fully insured, including her Henna Art work. Claire’s also offering small classes where customers can learn all about Henna and the particular do’s and don’ts of Henna art. Claire already offers Henna Art parties for customers in salon or on their own home. Claire continued; “With beauty and make-up having become part and parcel of everyday life now with ladies having our monthly & weekly pampering treats, the visit to the salon to have make-up applied has now become more accepted. Claire only uses well known make-up brands such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Jeffree Star, Urban Decay and Morphe, with all of these brands being ecofriendly. All of the brushes Claire uses are either vegan or eco friendly too. The Pink Frog is open Tuesday 10-6pm, Wednesday 10-2pm & 6-9pm, Thursday 10-6pm, Friday 10-8pm and Saturday 9-7pm. The salon is also open Sunday’s by appointment only and is closed on Monday. Claire can be contacted for appointments and further information on 07538 236307. You can also visit the Pink Frog facebook page to see pictures of Claire’s work and any special offers that they have at www.facebook.com/pinkfrogmua

MUM’S THE WORD

Hypnobirthing and the Wise Hippo.... As a mum of twin boys born prematurely at just 26 weeks, not only were all of my birth choices taken away from me, but the experience left me raw with emotion. With this in mind when I was asked to go out and meet mother and daughter duo Lorraine and Hayley Fisher, to learn about their Hypnobirthing classes, I took a big deep breath and accepted the challenge. Hayley, a senior midwife and labour ward coordinator at Barnsley Hospital, who's featured on the advert on the opposite page, was eager to tell me all about the programme and what it has to offer expectant mums out there.

This month we are pleased to introduce a new feature writer to our pages with our ‘Mum’s the Word’ columnist, Kelly Hardy, pictured above. Kelly is a Teacher, Parent Blogger and Mum of two and this month she went on a mission to find out a litle more about Hypnobirthing.

Lorraine, pictured below on the left, who specialises in cognitive behavioural therapy within the social work field, overflowed with pride when talking about her daughter and their new venture, The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme. The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme shares proven techniques through an in-depth antenatal programme that aims to remove fear and anxiety about birth and instead gives knowledge and power for a peaceful, calm entry into the world for your beautiful baby. Hayley explained that whilst the programme doesn’t promise a normal delivery, it does promise the tools to ensure the right delivery for you on that day and it does this by training the mind to tap into natural birthing instincts. The programme looks at fear: how it affects your hormones, muscle tension and mind in a negative manner. The classes not only teach women how to have a positive birth experience but they create strong, confident mothers who inherently trust themselves and their instincts to make the right choices for them and their families. Hypnobirthing is not a new concept with celebs such as Loose Women’s Nadia Salwalha and stars of The Mummy Diaries, Sam and Billie Faiers, raving about their birth experiences having completed the classes. Fellow Blogger and award winning author, The Unmumsy Mum, also wrote about her Hypnobirthing experience having had a positive birth of her son Wilf. She writes about her initial expectations of wearing tie-die and howling at the moon yet desperately urges women everywhere to consider the programme – even if they don’t think it’s for them. She highly recommends it as a tool for a positive birthing experience. Their professional backgrounds and wealth of skills and experience are only the foundations for making this a success. In my opinion, it is their warm, nurturing

and passionate persona that will see their classes full and mothers across Barnsley having positive birthing experiences that they are proud of. It’s that time of year where an open house could just be the trick you need to getting people through your door. Here are some simple do’s and don’ts that might just help to sell your house:

Open House Do’s: Dress for success Dress your home’s best features by staging where possible - with furniture, decor, lighting, and arrangements. Fresh flowers, dressing the table etc can also make a big difference.

Let there be light Buyers are drawn to bright and airy spaces. Make sure there’s enough natural and artificial light. Well placed decorative lamps can really help lift a room.

Clean and de-clutter Clean your house top to bottom. Make sure personal items are put away - buyers focus on storage space and if all your bits and bobs are left out they will assume there isn’t any - buyers try to imagine their own bits and bobs in the house and can find it difficult to place them in already cluttered spaces.

Warn your neighbours Make sure your neighbours are aware of the open house - and that there may be a few extra cars parked up for an hour or so they may even be open to ensuring their cars are not in the way on the day etc

Remember what made you buy the house Make sure you pass on all the positives that made you buy the house - south facing garden / good schools / local shops etc.

Put the Kettle on! There’s nothing like the smell of coffee as a nice welcome into a home. This also gives you a chance to chat to your viewers and give them any information they may require or answer any questions.

Open House Don’ts: Leave your pets at home Where possible pets and their belongings are best out of sight - not everyone is a dog/cat person etc and some people do find it off putting if faced with other people’s pets.

Ignore the outside This is sometimes the first impression a buyer gets of your property and certainly something that will come into their decision making on the viewing. Cut the grass, trim any overgrown shrubs and hedges and add some colour with flowers where possible especially near the front door.

Tell people where they can and can’t go Buyers need a chance to see the whole house from top to bottom and like to feel free to have a roam around - you need to allow this for them to feel comfortable and get a good feel for the property. If you escort someone around – always offer for them to have a second wonder round on their own.

Wait until the last minute Preparing for an open house can be a lot of work - don’t leave it all to the day of the open house!

GARDENING with Lee Bestall

No way, hosé! Lee Bestall, pictured on the right has been designing and managing the creation of gardens for over 10 years. After an extremely successful RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where he has an appearance on BBC TV and a visit from the Queen, Lee has a busy few months ahead.

holiday. It saves the neighbours some hassle too!

Hosepipe bans are back on the agenda at the moment, and unless we want a £1000 penalty if caught, we need to think about ways around watering with a hose. There are a number of options out there, ranging from the totally free to the more expensive. Considering the more costly methods of watering in periods of drought, the biggest solution is to have a large underground rainwater storage vat installed. Expense aside, this is still not an option for many of us with established plots who don’t want to rip up all our beloved planting. On the other hand, more affordable water storage methods exist. For as little as £30-40, you can pick up a simple water butt which easily fits onto downpipes. It’s estimated the average British house roof could yield 24,000 litres of rainwater. In contrast, hosepipes can use the same quantity of water in one hour as a family of four uses over one day. You may use a hose when it’s connected to a butt rather than mains supply. Additionally, rainwater doesn’t contain treatment chemicals so is much better for your plants than tap water. Micro-irrigation systems are another alternative. These connect to your outdoor tap, and drip irrigation tubes or sprinkler attachments then run from them. Incorporate a timer to filter an acceptable amount of water through to your garden at key times; especially useful when going on

There’s a lot to be said for the humble watering can in times of drought, especially if you keep them topped up. Place immediately in strategic positions around the garden so you have less distance to travel with them when some poor plant begins to wilt. A fine rose produces smaller droplets, which soak into the ground more quickly ensuring less water is lost to evaporation. If you must use a hose, and a ban isn’t in force, make sure to fit a trigger gun of some sort. These limit water wastage and refine where the water is going when aimed. A totally free option is to save waste water from indoor activities: bathing, washing the pots, showering. Not necessarily the easiest method effort-wise, but good for the environment in periods of drought. Your plants won’t suffer from the soap in the water. Some handy hints relate less to where your water comes from, and more when and how you water the garden. For starters, water either in the evening or early morning to reduce evaporation. Focus on suffering plants or newly planted specimens above all. Older perennials have deeper roots with a steady water supply. Lawns may look like they’re suffering by going brown, but these bounce back fast with the first rains. Leaving grass longer provides its roots with shade and limits stress. Lastly, be sure to mulch your soil, ideally with organic material like bark chippings or straw mulch. Water the soil well first and then cover with a 5-15cm layer to trap the moisture in for longer. Long-serving volunteers recognised in hospice ceremony Long-serving Barnsley Hospice volunteers were recently thanked at a special ceremony to recognise their dedication to the charity. Over 40 volunteers, who together have amassed over 300 years of service, were presented with certificates by the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Steve Green. Long-serving staff were also recognised, and the evening event at the hospice’s Limes Day Therapy Unit also provided a chance for volunteers and employees to enjoy time together in an informal setting. The volunteers who were recognised give their time in a wide variety of roles, including in the hospice itself, across its seven charity shops and at fundraising events. Lynn and Alan Jones were two of the volunteers presented with awards. The couple, who live on Church Street in Elsecar and have been married for 47 years, volunteer together at the Barnsley Hospice Donation Centre in Dodworth. Alan began donating time to the hospice 13 years ago, and his wife joined him four years later. Lynn, 67, said: “Volunteering gave me a focus when I retired, and I enjoy the company and meeting other

people. We’ve both made friends with the others we work with at the donation centre. We feel very valued as volunteers and this award shows the hospice appreciates what we do. It’s lovely to be recognised like this.” The hospice has over 270 volunteers on its books and in just one year between April 2017 and March 2018, they donated 30,438 hours of time. Julie Ferry, chief executive of Barnsley Hospice, said: “We are blessed to have such a dedicated team of volunteers and staff and it’s important that we show them how important they are. We appreciate every single one of them, not only the ones presented with certificates last week. “As a charity the hospice simply could not survive without the generosity of others, and whether that’s through donating time or money, it makes a massive difference to the patients and families we care for.” To find out more about volunteering for Barnsley Hospice, including the roles available, contact Barbara Cronin on 01226 323616 or at barbara.cronin@barnsley-hospice.org.

Part of Sir George's moves to Elsecar After the recent demolition of the former Sir George’s public house on Hough Lane in Wombwell, some of our readers will be glad to hear that part of the old pub has been kept intact and hasn’t gone to the big scrap yard in the sky. The white railings that featured on the front of the pub immediately above the front doors - see the picture above right - have been saved and put to good use at the rear of the old Electra Palace in Elsecar. Electra Palace owner Trevor Miller, who’s featured previously on our pages, saw the pub was being demolished and thought that the railings would make a great feature piece for his home at the Electra Palace. Having been on the lookout for such a piece of ironwork for many years Trevor ‘dropped on’ with his find when they fitted absolutely perfectly to the rear veranda of the Electra Palace.

BARNSLEY TODAY MAGAZINE

As you can see from the picture above left after a lick of black paint the railings do look very nice on the rear of the old building, which can now be seen from platform 1 of Elsecar train station. Good luck to Trevor in his continued restoration work and upkeep of this beautiful building - long may it continue. If anyone has any old pictures of the Sir Georges Public House on Hough Lane in Wombwell, we'd be very interested to see them. Please contact Peter via e-mail at peter@barnsleytoday.com if you have any, thank you.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE AREA

Andrew kicks his way to glory Barnsley College Public Services student Andrew Crooks has been chosen to represent the English Karate Alliance at the World Championships in Romania.

Increase in illegally sold alcohol Regulatory Services officers at Barnsley Council are concerned at finding increasing amounts of non-duty paid alcohol in pubs and bars in Barnsley. Officers carrying out routine food standards inspections have come across illegally sold spirits including Whisky and Gin in recent weeks. The products were removed from the premises for further examination and investigation. Officers believe that some of these spirits may have been brought back from foreign holidays for personal use or gifts, but then sold on illegally. Spirit drinks bought from countries outside Europe present a higher risk to consumers as they will not have been subject to the same safety controls. All spirits with a strength of 30% ABV or more and a capacity of 35cl or more on sale in the UK must carry a UK duty stamp. It is illegal for businesses to knowingly keep any alcohol which has been imported without payment of duty on licensed premises, or if the business cannot show where they purchased the spirits. Customers are being warned to watch out for standard size bottles of spirits which do not have a duty stamp when they purchase alcohol. This could mean that duty has not been paid or that the drink is counterfeit and could contain hazardous chemicals. If they see any alcohol on sale (over 35cl and above 30% ABV) they are asked to call Regulatory Services on 01226 773743.

Andrew began his journey at his local karate club where he recognised his love for the sport and found he had the ability to compete at world competition level. The 17-year-old moved up through the grades and gained recognition from the English Karate Alliance governing body. Andrew will compete against some of the best karate fighters on the international circuit. To prepare for the competition he has a gruelling daily training routine, with a five hour training session in the evening after his studies at College. Andrew is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and has access to an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund equipment and travel. Andrew of Gawber, said: “I’m looking forward to competing in a prestigious international event and gaining experience from it. I’m currently the European Champion for my age and weight so this will be a great test of my abilities. “The College understands the demands to compete at a higher level and the support I have received has really helped me to pursue my goals in karate.”

Businesses found selling non-duty paid or counterfeit alcohol may face formal action which could include a review of their licence or legal action, which can result in an unlimited fine or imprisonment for up to two years.

Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football (male and female), Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing and Individual Athlete Academy.

Any businesses offered non-duty paid, or counterfeit alcohol is asked to contact Regulatory Services on 01226 773743.

HEALTH

Herbal helpers can save the day Whilst the recent hot dry weather has been a very pleasant break from the sometimes indifferent climate that we have to endure on these shores, this hot and often very humid weather has brought health issues to the fore for those of us that suffer with hay fever and the likes in the warmer months. Paul’s Natural Foods in the Elsecar Heritage Centre is well worth a visit for those who suffer from such ailments. Here’s what I found out when I went in search of a remedy...

LOVELY LUFFA Luffa Operculata, or as its better known Sponge Cucumber, relieves symptoms of rhinitis that include sneezing, nasal discharge and a blocked nose. It’s traditionally indicated for allergic and vasomotor rhinitis, hay fever, acute moist and watery catarrhs of an allergic character, as well as allergic disorders of the nasal mucosa in general, headache with catarrh of the upper airways, and dry, irritative states of the nose. Whilst dealing efficiently with these symptoms, it is not associated with any side effects, and will not cause drowsiness or impairment of concentration. This makes it ideal for students, drivers, and athletes, not to mention those of us who wish to attend summer weddings, parties and barbeques without either wrapping our heads in hankies or dozing off in a corner. Party-goers will also be relieved to know that it doesn’t cause unpredictable interactions with alcohol. Luffa can be used by people with eye symptoms who can't use eye drops due to wearing contact lenses. It can also be found as a Nasal Spray for those whose symptoms are mainly nasal. This counters allergic responses (blocked or runny nose, itching and sneezing) without causing rebound dilation. It can therefore be used throughout the summer without causing any problems. A.Vogel Pollinosan Luffa Nasal Spray and Pollinosan tablets are available from health stores nationwide.

AN EYEFUL OF EYEBRIGHT Eyebright (Euphrasia) will provide relief to troubled eyes during the summer, whether they are inflamed, itchy, dry or watery. When taken internally as a tincture, Euphrasia works specifically on the eyes and is both an antiinflammatory and antiseptic for them, whilst also being able to dry up excess tears if they are an issue. The tears are there to wash irritants out of the eyes so you don’t want anything too extreme, but Eyebright is effective and gentle at the same time.

64

BARNSLEY TODAY MAGAZINE

HEALTH Although taking Eyebright internally will benefit eye tissue generally, it also comes as Eye Drops, which moisturise and calm inflamed eyes immediately.

LOCAL HONEY Another ‘weapon’ against hay fever is a local honey. Depending on where a person lives, if they can source a raw local honey from within about a two mile radius, this will help a person’s body to ‘familiarise’ itself with the pollen type. So when the pollen count rises your body will feel accustomed to the pollen and not react so aggressively by seeing it as an alien bacteria and triggering an ‘allergic’ reaction. Paul’s Natural Foods sell a local honey from a Hemingfield based beekeeper who has hives located on the Dearne and Dove canal, and others positioned near Burying Lane, Elsecar. So this is very local honey to people in the Elsecar, Hoyland, Hemingfield and Wentworth areas. People living in these nearby areas should find some help from taking a raw local honey daily to bolster resistance to a surge in the pollen levels. Fresh raw local honey is the key.

NOW REGISTERING NEW PATIENTS

The honey is available from Pauls Natural Foods for ÂŁ4.50p per 340g jar.

So in my opinion it’s well worth a visit to Paul’s Natural Foods at the Elsecar Heritage Centre, they’re open 6 days a week from 10am till 4pm (closed on Tuesdays).

The team down at the Wombwell based Acorn Brewery recently celebrated their 15th birthday. It was July 2003 when the Cask Ale Crew produced their first brew of the much renowned and multi award winning Barnsley Bitter. So now that Acorn Brewery is well into its teenage years, the brewery boys and girls have been developing a Decades range, which has involved the public naming the beer.

Christy Hughes (Director of Business Development) said; “The Decades range has been rather exciting. We want to involve our customers in the brew process; we thought what better way to do so by inviting our customers to name the beer, with the winner’s name featuring on the pump clip. So far, we have ran three competitions with a further three to take place, watch for more details on Social Media.”

Blue Light Damage - What Is It?

This month Jessica Shaw, Senior Beauty Therapist at Essentials Nail & Skin Therapy in Wombwell, tells us all about the potential dangers of UV rays and in particular Blue Light Damage....

The way in which blue light is speeding up the ageing process is by attacking our bodies own natural collagen and enzyme production. Once these are attacked by the blue light, they start to decrease in production and reliability. Therefore, this causes weaker collagen bonds, which gives the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It will also cause dull, pigmented skin to become more apparent and visible as it encourages melanin production to become distorted.

We all know the dangers and the damage UV rays can cause to our skins, and that we should protect with a daily SPF. Well, unfortunately for us, research has shown the use of blue light emitting technology is causing huge complexion issues. Also known as HEV (high energy visible), this particular lighting from natural daylight, light bulbs, our phones, computers and tablets are causing acceleration of skin ageing and pigmentation. Of course, the sun is the largest contender for causing our skins to become stressed from blue light, however, as the sun is further away than our phones and tablets, they will cause smaller amounts of damage, but over a longer, more frequently exposed, period of time, will be a bigger risk factor.

So, how can we reduce the chance of these unwanted problems? Read on to see my top five products and how they work.

BareMinerals Complexion Defense Rescue Radiant Protective Tint SPF 30. A brand new environment fighting radiant moisturising rescue product with additional SPF protection. Developed for use under or over make or can be worn alone, the cacao extract incorporated releases huge amounts of antioxidants. These fight against the free radicals in the environment and from technology screens. A great budget product to provide the basic protection with a subtle glow we will all benefit from.

EA Pro Triple Action Protector Face & Body SPF 30 The ‘bees knees’ in ultimate protection for your face and body. From premature ageing, moisture loss and DNA cell damage, this TRIPLE protector, supports them all. This one of a kind, clinically proven product encourages

collagen production and supports the skin’s natural repair system with the perfect blend of antioxidants, proteins and the all important DNA Repair Enzyme Complex. So, as well as SPF and HEV protection, it also erases broken DNA strands and repairs them by removing any previous destruction, allowing a brand new, healthy strand to replace it. Great to treat any skin type or condition including ageing, pigmentation, acne and dehydration.

EA Pro Triple Action Protector SPF 50 Has all the same benefits and ingredients of the product above but a higher SPF value suitable for daily facial use.

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 50 This mid-price range-broad spectrum facial SPF creates a softer, smoother texture whilst also shielding from environmental assault due to its antioxidant ingredients. Vitamins C & E fight free radicals, in conjunction with an SPF 50, to maintain superior protection.

Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 Created to reduce ageing factors, this advanced moisturiser provides UVA & B protection with a SPF 50. Rich with Antioxidant White Tea, that is widely known to prevent the breakdown of collagen, polyphenols also inhibit free radical damage. Patented Dermalogica Age Smart technology encourages stronger UV protection in conjunction with unique polypeptides to promote an all round skin loving moisturiser. All these products listed can be found to purchase at Essentials Nail & Skin Therapy or, for more information, feel free to contact us through our telephone or facebook page, where one of our friendly team will be happy to assist with any queries.

Make a Will - it won’t kill you! A Will or the lack of one - has featured in many a tale, from Dickens to plots in Eastenders! There is a real risk of family fall out in dealing with the estate of a deceased person who has not made a will or updated an existing one. Families can be torn apart with financial and emotional misery causing deep seated rifts that do not heal! Probably not what the deceased would have wanted! The fractured nature of modern families and an increasingly litigious society means that making a Will is more important now than ever.

Many people cannot face the prospect of their own mortality - but unfortunately that won’t stave off the Grim Reaper! It is often said: “The only certainties in life are death and taxes”, and it is not just the elderly and the terminally ill who die. There are many reasons to make a Will; saving of Inheritance Tax (IHT); saving of potential future care home fees; appointment of Guardians for infant children; appointment of Executors to look after your business; to make sure that your wishes are carried out in respect of gifts, legacies and your own funeral; to ensure that those you DO wish to benefit are named in your Will and, conversely, those you DON’T are left out. But whatever the reasons, having a current, valid, thoughtout Will makes things so much easier for your nearest and dearest in the event of your death.

LEGAL WITH PEACE LEGAL SOLICITORS, WOMBWELL

PROBATE Dealing with the estate of someone who has died can be a challenging task, sometimes involving the sale of properties and investments, or the settlement of loans, debts, mortgages or tax issues. An individual who takes on that challenge may have to manage a wide range of legal, financial and administrative matters, often at a time of emotional distress. Before they will release larger amounts of money, organisations like banks and insurance companies normally need to see a document confirming who is legally entitled to administer the estate. It is usually called a Grant of Representation (depending on your circumstances, this document may have a different name)

LASTING POWER of ATTORNEY A lasting power of attorney ( LPA ) is a legal document that lets you (the ‘donor’) appoint one or more people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can’t make your own decisions (you ‘lack mental capacity’). You must be 18 or over and have mental capacity (the ability to make your own decisions) when you make your LPA. You don’t need to live in the UK or be a British citizen. There are 2 types of LPA: 1. Property and financial affairs 2. Health and welfare You can choose to make one type or both. Please call Claire Wild for an appointment on 01226 341111

Clean Air Day aims to provide everyone with information and inspiration to improve air quality in and outside of their home. There was a temporary road closure in place on West Street, the road providing entrance to the school, to highlight the contribution of the school drop off and pick up times on air quality and to encourage children and parents to consider Active Travel alternatives such as riding a bike, scooter, or walking to school. The temporary road closure aimed to make the school run more enjoyable for everyone involved, reducing pollution and congestion, giving children a place to play. TRAVEL WITH JORDAN BURNISH

My Peak District Picks

With us being so close to the Peak District, this month Jordan Burnish, our regular travel writer shares with us a few memories from the trips that she's enjoyed there in recent years... welcomes many mountain bikers who enjoy it as a new trial. Nature certainly got its way in this case.

SURPRISE VIEW This spot is located right next to the busy A6187 road that leads into Hathersage. I had driven past a couple of times and seen people stood on huge rocks by the side of the road and wondered what they were doing before I decided to take a look. After visiting, I understand what could be so ‘surprising’ about Surprise View now and that is that you do not actually see the vastness of the beautiful landscape until you are stood on the rocks looking out onto it. There's no way of really seeing it from the road that's just a couple of metres away. It’s definitely worth a stop off if you are curious to see what the fuss is all about.

LONGSHAW ESTATE Starting at Longshaw’s car park, the Estate offers several colour coded walks ranging in length and terrain. While a few of the shorter walks are great to amble through the park along stoned and flat ground, the larger walks enable you to really take in the spectacular views. A personal

MAM TOR Mam Tor, near Castleton seems to just keep on going and going, offering endless hours of exploring. The good thing about the climb is the steps that guide you up and the experience at the top is so rewarding with many chances to get different viewpoints of the surroundings. Even on an ‘iffy’ day with less visibility, I still believe it’s worth a trip. Once on the way down you can meet the old road, which over time and despite many efforts has become unusable. Huge cracks have formed due to a slow moving landslide and it has got to the point that you can now actually stand in the tarmac. Now looking like a deformed black mess, it is an unusual sight that

favourite walk of choice takes you past Padley Gorge which is a great stop off to have a paddle on a warm day. I always think that the best way to finish a walk is at a pub and the The Fox House (the winner of Countryfile’s best pub of the year 2018) could not be in a better position. Just a short walk from the car parks at the Longshaw Estate, it is a perfect spot to quench your thirst. While it will be no surprise that spots in the Peak District can get very busy in the summer months, do not let that put you off. If you want to avoid the usual peak season nightmare, choose your location wisely and you might just get lucky. See you next month.

Entertain the kids for FREE this Summer! Schools out right now and there'll be lots of Mums and Dads out there looking for stuff to do with their little ones. Eve Smith, our regular Lifestyle feature writer, has put together a few pointers for us.....

have one, a spade and a spoon and you’re on your way. Set a challenge to find 5-10 different bugs and let the kids do the rest. WATER PLAY: A firm favourite with my son, he’s happy with several buckets or large containers of water and toys and different size cups to play with and transfer water with. We quite often play ‘car wash’ too and fill buckets full of soapy water and get sponges to wash his car and all his garden toys, he loves this and quite often he’ll start some role play with it too.

The 6-week school holidays can bring mixed emotions to say the least! Excitement to have lots of time to enjoy with the kids, to tearing your hair out because you’ve had too much time with the kids, to wondering if pay day will hurry up as you’ve already spent a fortune on days out and it’s only the 2nd week in. As a parent, I think we can put too much pressure on ourselves sometimes to ‘go out and have fun’ which quite often we associate with spending money and paying entrance fees to places. However, there’s nothing wrong with staying at home and making your own fun, and if you think ahead and set some ideas or put a plan in place you’ll soon find there’s lots of adventures to be had at home that you may not have considered. Here’s a few of my favourite ideas that you could add to your own lists during the school holidays. BUG HUNT: First, get all your gear together. Find some buckets, small containers, nets, a magnifying glass if you

86

BARNSLEY TODAY MAGAZINE

SCAVENGER OR TREASURE HUNT: There’s a few ways you can use this idea. For the scavenger hunt you can write a list or draw pictures of what they need to find then hide the items round the house and garden and set them on their way with a rucksack to put them all in. For the treasure hunt, if your kids are a bit older, get a load of 2ps and 10ps and hide them in the garden or in the house

LIFESTYLE

and again set them on their way, tell them how much they have to try and find to get them adding all the coins up too. If you’re feeling generous, you could walk to the local shop when you’re done & let them choose a special treat with their ‘treasure’. JUNK MODELLING: This works just as well indoors as outdoors, gather up all your (clean) recycling, old boxes, plastic bottles etc. and get some sellotape, scissors, string - whatever you have available - and set them the challenge of creating something, the choice is theirs. Extend the fun further by getting them to decorate it when they have finished, grab the felt tips, paints, stickers and craft supplies and let them finalise their master piece!

Hopefully this has helped to give you a few ideas to keep the little ones entertained this August, good luck and try and stay sane!

What are your best ideas for free ways to entertain the kids? We’d love to hear about them! Head to our Facebook page to get in touch, you’ll find us at: www.facebook.com/barnsleytoday Eve x

Princess Pamper Parties from age Six years Maximum 10 Princesses

BUILD A DEN: Again, whether indoors or outdoors this works well and can provide hours of fun. Throw in some roleplay too and the den could be pirate ship, a castle, a house, or wherever your imaginations take you! PAPER AIRPLANES: Make paper airplanes and set out a starting line and measure how far your airplanes can go, try out different designs to see whether you can make a paper airplane go even further. Once you’ve got a design you like why not decorate it? GET OUTDOORS: If you do fancy heading out and want to keep the costs down why not head to your local riverside or park? We can spend hours at the river if we take a picnic and make our own fun by throwing stones and sticks in. Pretend to make your own campfire by collecting sticks for the fire and stones to go around the outside. If you don’t mind the drive, why not head to the beach for the day? Pack the car up and make a full ‘daycation’ of it!

FROM DAYS GONE BY

A load of balls and a day trip to Blackpool This month our pictures ‘From Days Gone By’ are a great mixture and the picture from the mid90s of the new link road in Wombwell on the opposite page provide a great insight in to how life was back in the day. Let’s hope they jog a few happy memories for you...

New balls please! Slazenger’s tennis ball factory in Barnsley used to make thousand’s of tennis balls each year for Wimbledon. Did you or anyone in your family used to work there?

Hospital Sings used to be very popular events, here’s a photo from Royston in 1948.

A very retro looking Clothiers Arms in Elsecar during the 1980s.

MAN ENGINE

Man Engine Explodes into the area On the 23rd/24th June something spectacular happened in Elsecar and Wentworth when the largest ever constructed mechanical puppet in the UK greeted audiences. Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar created two special events that attracted 6000 people to celebrate the industrial and cultural heritage of Barnsley and Rotherham. The events saw an amazing array of performances from Mr Fox, Ian McMillan, Ray Hearne, Sheffield City Giants, Spitfire’s, street performers, Grimm and co and so much more. ‘Absolutely fabulous!!! Had a fantastic family day. Man Engine was amazing. Made me quite emotional. Can’t wait for the next event’ – Attendee Comment

‘What an amazing day at Wentworth - the Mighty Man Engine was such a wonderful spectacle and the words and songs were genuinely moving. A fantastic tribute to our great industrial past and those who worked in the mines and forges (lovely conversations with so many who enjoyed both yesterday at Elsecar and today - one lady said she found it incredibly emotional) ‘. – Attendee Comment

Do you know these faces from the past? Following last month’s issue and the publishing of the picture on the right of a group of young children from John Knowles Church in Hoyland, we received a phone call from Pat Bennett who lives in Wombwell. In those days Pat was known as Pat Slater and she told us that she’s actually in the picture she’s the young girl at the end of the 2nd row on the right hand side. She also told us that the young girl sat next to her with the pony tails was a young girl called Ann Gregory.

THE LAST WORD

Time for change? I read recently that the Italian government have pledged to ban gambling adverts from TV from January 1st 2019 although I’m sure the multi-national gambling companies won’t take that lying down. I don’t know about you but I am heartily fed up of seeing gambling promoted so heavily on TV, in printed media and on the internet and I believe that the Labour governments introduction of the 2005 Gambling Act which opened the floodgates to a free-for-all was a terrible mistake. Even former Labour MP Harriet Harman has said the same. Aside from the insidious internet casino games, some of which are clearly designed to attract children, a huge amount of damage is caused by the ubiquitous Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT’s). These machines, placed mostly in betting shops, generate profits of £297 million per year according to a

According to our ‘Last Word’ columnist Sue Bentham ‘It’s time for a change’. Changes in the gambling industry and potential changes surrounding the use of cannabis may be about to happen. Here’s what Sue has to say on these topics....

Birmingham University study and the Gambling Commission says that an estimated £5 million is lost on these machines EVERY DAY! Stories of family breakdown, job losses and even suicides as a result of uncontrolled gambling are all too common and yet our government still dither over whether or not to slash the amount that can be gambled on FOBT’s from £100 a go down to £2. What are they waiting for? Presumably they don’t want to lose the tax income from these lucrative machines and it’s true that this would have to be found somewhere else. The £11 billion overseas aid budget springs to mind here doesn’t it?

Gambling, along with drugs and excessive boozing, ruins lives, families and society and it seems that this unholy trinity has infected every strata of society, from the highest to the lowest. And yes it was Tony Blair’s Labour government which relaxed the drinking laws and introduced ’24 hour drinking’ too. The drugs problem has also infected all parts of society with the taking of drugs seemingly essential to a good night out for all too many people. What worries me is that some government ministers, who ought to know better, are calling for the legalisation of cannabis on the spurious excuse that the ‘war on drugs is lost’! I want the authorities to get tougher on these issues, not softer. What do you think?
