Welcome

Welcome to spring! Yes I’m glad to say that it’s finally here after all the snow, rain and whatever this climate of ours has thrown at us these past few weeks. Let’s hope that we are in for a great few months and we can get out and about and enjoy the wonderful area that we live in. One such event that’s well worth getting out to see and is coming right into our area is the Man Engine, as we’ve featured on our front cover this month. The size of two and a half Double Decker buses, the Man Engine is one of THE attractions of the summer and one that you’ll not want to miss. More details are on pages 22 & 23 of this issue, but safe to say it’s coming to Elsecar & Wentworth very soon. Elsewhere in this issue you’ll find features on two local new and very different businesses. It’s great to hear how in both of these new enterprises the respective owners completely changed their careers, re-trained themselves, got new qualifications and are now up and running. Please try and support them if you can. Finally, and without wanting to sound like an old record, some people are of the opinion that the town of Hoyland doesn’t know whether it’s coming or going at the moment insofar as what’s happening and what’s not happening – to find out more go to page 38. That’s all for now folks, hope you have a great month and see you in June.

LOCAL NEWS

HELP!! Do you have the missing tack box? We’ve been contacted by a local lady Jan Jackson, who’s appealing for any information that will lead to finding a missing horse grooming tack box. In early December last year Jan was packing to move abroad and believes the red horse grooming box, pictured on the right, was taken to a charity shop by mistake. It would have gone to either BARC Charity shop in Hoyland Common or the Salvation Army shop in Hoyland and she is keen to try to trace it in the hope that she will be able to buy it back from the new owner due to sentimental value.

and everything in it reminds me of the horse and happy memories. It really is so sad that it got misplaced during the move and I hope someone will read this that may have it and get In touch to re unite us.”

Of the box Jan told us; “I first got the box 24 years ago when I saved my childhood pocket money each week to get the box and all the grooming bits to go inside. It has been everywhere with me and it was used to groom a horse I cared for for many years who later died. The box

The box was a red carry box with a red stretchy cover, inside it had curry combs, brushes etc, all of which were marked in black marker with a ‘JL’ The box also contained a small red ‘horse and rider’ clip folder about horse health - could this be something you picked up?

If you have the box please get In touch by emailing: cheekychopster@hotmail.com or calling 07929 081483, the boxs return will result in a cash payment. Many thanks

LOCAL NEWS

From Barnsley to Buckingham Palace What started out with two local friends getting together for their weekly pint and a general catch up on how life was, ended up with them planning the idea of doing a charity walk all the way from Barnsley to Buckingham Palace. the Monday morning in four inches of snow and managed to hit just about every bit of adverse weather you can imagine. Heavy rain, wind, Gavin got sunstroke en-route as well and even more snow - they really did get all of the four seasons in one week. “The walk itself was very tough and arduous at times, but we went through towns and villages that you’d never normally see or even hear. We were aiming for around 30 to 40 miles per day and during the day we were both burning off around 6,000 calories, so we had to plan to carry sufficient snacks and drinks so we didn’t suffer even more along the way.”

Yes it does sound a little crazy I know but a couple of pints later and best mates and local businessmen Gavin Swallow and Paul Campbell had started to believe that the idea of such a walk was maybe not so mad after all and actually possible - and best of all they were going to do it in five days!

Some of the roads in the countryside that Gavin and Paul were walking on didn’t even have footpaths and at times it was quite dangerous. “The recovery time was hard to come to terms with as well, because as soon as our muscles seized up you had to get up and try and get the legs moving again.”

Gavin told me a little more; “We’d always wanted to do something together to raise money for charity and Paul set the ball rolling by immediately posting it on his various social media sites and it took off from there really.” Gavin and Paul sat down and started to research the idea a little more. They soon realised what a momentous task they’d actually taken on, but undeterred they carried on and anyway by now lots of their friends, family and even strangers they didn’t know, had got behind them with pledges of support & sponsorship if they completed the walk. Gavin and Paul weren’t about to let anyone down. “Alongside the planning for the walk, we had to try and fit in some form of training that would hopefully stand us in good stead for the long week ahead. This was as well as working, and trying to maintain our normal day-to-day family lives and jobs,” explained Paul. “Training was hard - because how can you train your body and mind for something like that?” said Gavin. “We planned out the route and our overnight accommodation was taken care of thanks to some very generous sponsorship by Chris Coggins at Grays Travel and Mark Mallender at Triple M Vehicle Sales in Wombwell, which was a fantastic gesture.” Gavin and Paul set off from the town hall in Barnsley on 8

Gavin and Paul began their walks around 8am each morning and would walk until they reached their resting point for the night. On the Thursday night of their walk they were still walking at 9.30pm. So far Gavin and Paul have raised over £2,500 for their five nominated charities - Shelter, Mind, The Richmond Fellowship, Barnsley Hospital Charity and Neurocare. If you’d like to make a contribution then you can do so via their Just Giving page at https://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/Team/PaulandGav A great effort by Gavin and Paul in the circumstances so what’s the next challenge? I hear they are planning to do the coast to coast walk at some time in the near future...watch this space......

Reds in the Community announce Shadow Scholarship Scheme Reds in the Community are delighted to announce the launch of a Shadow Scholarship in partnership with Barnsley FC, Barnsley College and Independent Training Services. The programme will allow a combination of ex-academy players and other local talent to progress their footballing ability by training daily in a professional environment. Alongside the football aspects, they will study on the Community’s established education courses, gaining either a BTEC or foundation degree in foundation football coaching. Players will develop under FA qualified coaches from the Community and the Academy, also having access to physiotherapy, gym and analysis facilities. The 2018/19 season will be the first year that Barnsley will have a team representing the club in the U19’s National Youth League against other professional football clubs. Lead Player Development Coach Mark Tinker recently returned to Oakwell in order to lead on the Shadow Scholarship alongside his duties coaching the Barnsley Academy U15’s.

Tinker, who has coached in the USA alongside previous roles at Leeds United, Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, holds big ambitions for the scheme. He said: “I think the major thing would be the link with high level education, combined with the ultimate playing experience. I came back to Barnsley to develop the best football development programme, in a shadow squad capacity, in the country.” Academy Manager Bobby Hassell will also be heavily involved in the day-to-day activities of the shadow scholarship, with the players studying and developing on the professional Academy syllabus and curriculum.

The former Reds defender has backed the programme to be an instant success, both on and off the pitch. He said: “It’s going to be a great experience for the lads

Barnsley FC midfielder and Education Ambassador Adam Hammill hopes that the initiative will be able to mirror the previous success of other established shadow scholarships across the country. He said: “I’ve seen the success rate from it before. I think it’s about 25 players who have gone on to play professionally. Players develop differently. Some develop at 16, some at 18. It’s a great opportunity for everyone but especially for the lads who are getting a second chance – they’ve got to grasp it with both hands.”

Rain? What rain? Unless you’ve been on a different planet this past month or so, then you cannot have failed to notice the inclement weather that’s hit us. With this in mind we thought that we ought to share the little gem of a picture below that we spotted on one local facebook page recently.

Such was the weather that besieged Sandhill Golf Club in early April that their groundstaff didn’t know what sport they should be preparing for on their 18th green - Golf or a spot of Canoeing??? It’s great to see the funny side of the effect of the weather at times and we’re glad to report that normal service has now been resumed at Sandhill with all greens and tees now fully open - to golfers only might we add!!

BARNSLEY HOSPICE

Appeal for Volunteers at Hospice Donation Centre Barnsley Hospice is appealing for more volunteers to help at its donation centre in Dodworth. The centre acts as a drop-off point and warehouse to store stock centrally, and also houses three retail outlets consisting of a clothing and accessories store, an ‘entertainment centre’ selling vinyl records, DVDs and books, and a discount clothing store that sells everything – including suits and coats – for just £1. There are currently 47 volunteers at the centre, which is based opposite KDA Warehouse on Fall Bank Industrial Estate. Their duties include accepting donations of clothing and bric-a-brac from members of the public, encouraging Gift Aid, sorting stock in the warehouse, helping in the retail outlets, and assisting with furniture deliveries. Stephen Hatfield, pictured above, retail manager at Barnsley Hospice, said: “We simply couldn’t manage without our volunteers here at Dodworth, and it’s vital that we find more people who are able to spare some time – even just a few hours a week – to help. The hospice relies on its shops to raise money for patient care, so these are important roles that make a direct difference to families in Barnsley.

“Although the shops here at the donation centre have been open a couple of years, they are a still a bit of a hidden treasure. So, as well as more volunteers, we’d also love to see more people popping down to drop off donations and pick up some bargains at the same time.” Judy Holling, 72, lives in Dodworth and has been volunteering at the donation centre for six months. She said: “I’m retired and I wanted to do some voluntary work, so a friend suggested I join her here, and I love it. It’s helping the hospice, but it’s also a way of meeting people. When you’re retired, you’ve got to get out of the house, so it helps me too. “It’s a really friendly team here, everyone helps each other, and it’s just a really nice place to be. I’ve had relations who have been in the hospice so it’s nice to be able to give something back. “The people I volunteer with are from all over Barnsley, all different ages, and we enjoy catching up over cups of tea and chatting about our lives and our families.” As well as the retail outlets at the donation centre, there are six other Barnsley Hospice shops; at Wombwell, Mapplewell, Penistone, and three in the town centre. Donations can be accepted at all shops, although people are encouraged to use the Dodworth donation centre if they can. The hospice shops play a vital role in generating income for Barnsley Hospice, which has to raise over £2m a year, in addition to a £1.6m grant from the NHS. Between April 2017 and March 2018, they brought in almost £30,000 - generating an additional £60,000 profit compared to the previous 12 months.

To find out more about volunteering at the donation centre, call 01226 323616 or email barbara.cronin@barnsleyhospice.org.

BARNSLEY & ROTHERHAM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Chamber raises over £500 for Charity of the Year Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce members and charity supporters got their heads together and put their thinking caps on to help raise £560 for the Chamber’s Charity of the Year, City Hearts UK, at the annual Chamber Quiz Night. Over 150 participants from 30 teams took part in the Quiz Night, first launched in 2017, to raise funds and give back to City Hearts UK; a local charity which provides support to men, women and children who have fallen victim to modern slavery. Funds were also raised throughout the night via a raffle and the Chamber’s Deputy Chief Executive Dominic Beck resumed his position as quizmaster for a second year. The winning team, ‘This Isn’t the Woodman’, pictured on the right, scored 59 correct answers out of 80, whilst losers ‘Hard Drives’ - consisting of employees from

Rotherham based Open Network Services took home the wooden spoon prize. Event organiser Diane Graham said: “We are once again overwhelmed by the support we have received from our members and supporters, who came together to help us raise funds for a highlight the work this inspirational charity does within the community. “This is the second year we have hosted Charity Quiz Night and once again it was a huge success. We are already looking forward to next year’s event, where we will be raising funds for the winner of the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber Charity of the Year award.” Ed Newton, Managing Director of City Hearts UK, said: “We are honoured to be the beneficiaries of the donations made from both the raffle and quiz. The £560 which was raised will go towards furthering the support we provided to the people in our care, who are recovering from the trauma of Modern Slavery. “On behalf of everyone involved with City Hearts UK, I would like to thank everyone who took park and the Chamber staff who organised such a fantastic event and, of course, congratulations to team ‘This Isn’t the Woodman’ for winning first prize!” Other quiz participants included last year’s champions Hargreaves Industrial Services - who returned as ‘The Tickers ‘n’ Bashers’ - Wosskow Brown’s team of ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ and Fortay Media as the aptly named ‘Quizzy McQuiz Face’. The Charity Quiz Night was kindly sponsored by Barnsley based Osborne Technologies, who supplied the latest touch screen equipment and technology.

COVER STORY

The Man Engine is coming! On Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June the spectacular ‘Man Engine’ will arrive in South Yorkshire. Join us to celebrate our past, present and future - looking back to our proud industrial past and shining a spotlight on the advanced manufacturing we are famous for today. Woodhouse where you are invited to join him for a picnic on the lawn reminiscent of miners’ picnics of yesteryear. Fun for all ages, it will be a celebration of the great house’s unique story, with a 1940s twist. The event will include vintage style entertainment, a chance to hear stories from Wentworth and Elsecar, family games and a great range of food, drinks and artisan traders. Vintage dress isn’t required but is highly encouraged, again with prizes up for grabs for the best costume.

Man Engine is the largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain and transforms to stand at 11.2 metres high, weighing in at a staggering 40 tonnes. The giant miner is fresh from a tour of Cornwall, Somerset, Ironbridge and South Wales where sell-out crowds have been wowed by spectacular ‘afternooner’ and ‘afterdarker’ performances. The visit is part of the Man Engine’s 2018 Resurrection Tour of the UK, during which the huge puppet is travelling across the country in celebration of our rich mining past.

These are both ticket only events and advanced booking is essential. Tickets will be available for purchase via Eventbrite at £5 per ticket. Under 3s are free. So, join us with friends and family to welcome the colossal engineering spectacle that is Man Engine to Yorkshire, to celebrate our past and look forward to an exciting future this really is an event not to be missed! Ashley’s keeping us Connected It’s never easy starting up a new business from scratch, I can certainly vouch for that, but sometimes life throws a challenge at you that you have no alternative but to take on. This is precisely what happened to Ashley Hardy when his wife Kelly gave birth to their beautiful twin boys Austin & Rory 14 weeks early just over two years ago. At the time Ashley worked in Sports Development as a PE Teacher and was very passionate about teaching. However, when their two young sons arrived a little earlier than they expected, life took a dramatic change for both Ashley and Kelly. Because of the early arrival of the twins they needed extra care and attention and so, with Kelly having already given up her own teaching position to look after them, it soon became apparent that Ashley would have to do the same. So, having always been a keen DIY and building

work enthusiast, Ashley took the plunge and re-trained himself as a Domestic Electrician. Ashley told me; “It’s been a bit of a change to say the least. But it’s well worth it so that I can help Kelly with the boys and still go out to work. It’s been difficult at times making everything fit in, but it’s getting easier each week and the support I’ve had from local people with getting the business off the ground has been amazing.” Ashley’s business Hardy Electrical Solutions is run from the family home in the heart of Hoyland. He’s now a fully qualified and fully insured domestic electrician dealing with all lighting issues, the fitting of plug sockets, internal and external lights right through to complete re-wires. Ashley also fits security alarms, carries out fault finding tasks and undertakes electrical inspections & testing.

Make May… ‘May be’ month It’s finally the month of May, the brighter days are here - we’ve been waiting long enough! Why not kick start the summer and make this month ‘May be’ month?

a difference to your overall mood over the month. It turns out May is ‘National Smile Month’ too so if this gets you, or other people smiling more then surely it’s a win for everyone!

Every day think of something special, no matter how big or small to enhance that day. Maybe… phone a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while, take a bag of things to the charity shop, buy some fresh flowers, sort out your hand bag - just try and do a little something you might not usually do to make that day even better. Whether it makes you feel happier, more organised, content or accomplished, why not give it a go? You could even mark the days off on a calendar that you’ve done something a little different and see if it makes

When you get thinking there’s lots of things you could do that may be out of your usual routine but get ‘May be’ month kick started. Why not try a new recipe, walk instead of taking the car, or have a few nights TV free? Sometimes getting out of your usual routine can make a huge difference to your overall sense of wellbeing. That’s one of the reasons I love to go away on holiday or weekends away - the fact that your usual day to day routine is no longer an option opens up a world of possibilities of how that day might go, or where you end up, no being ruled by the clock, just enjoying each hour as it comes. I always come back from a holiday thinking I really should do more to break my usual routine when I can, and sometimes be a bit more spontaneous instead of so organised all the time! So whatever you choose to do differently let’s all try and shake things up a bit for ‘May be’ month. And don’t forget, it doesn’t have to be expensive or over energetic, just wake up each morning and commit to doing something a little bit different. Let us know how you get on with ‘May be’ month, whether you try something new or get something done you’ve been meaning to for a long time. Head to our Facebook page to tell us, you’ll find us at: www.facebook.com/ barnsleytoday

RUMOURS

Subway, Costa Coffee and B&M Bargains? Who knows? With building work now having restarted in and around the old market place in Hoyland, as well as there being a few empty premises in the town, I thought I'd try and update, and maybe pass on to you, some of the 'tales' that I've heard in the recent weeks and months. So where are we at present with the vacant business premises in Hoyland? As I understand it there are currently seven business premises that are empty and available to rent or buy in or around Hoyland town centre. The last I heard what was the old Halls Fruit & Veg’ shop is supposed to be opening soon as a shop selling ‘bath bombs’, soaps and such products, although there was previous talk of it being some kind of Vape shop. The former Cooplands premises are still empty after a few months of being vacant, with BMBC looking to rent the premises out at a cost of £875 per month to prospective businesses. The empty new premises in front of the old town hall what used to be Sweet Temptations Dessert takeaway business - in the centre of Hoyland is, I’m told, going to be a Fruit & Veg’ business when contracts are signed. Whilst I’m talking about that part of Hoyland, I’m told that Ali’s Cafe is being taken over soon by two ladies from Barnsley who will continue to run the business as a cafe. The former Butchers next door to Seabirds Fish & Chip Shop on the High Street in Hoyland has now been split into two smaller units - maybe a smaller butchers could be opening very soon, with something else next door - who knows? The premises that were Monster Munch Cafe is still closed and maybe be available to rent/buy - interestingly both this and the premises next door (Seabirds Fish & Chip Shop) and the flat above are available to buy on the

market. As we speak the new Turkish Barbers, in the lower part of King Street, opposite Golden Brown’s Tanning Salon, is still undergoing a re-fit and is supposed to be opening soon. The former Vanity Box Hair salon is also being refurbished as we speak and the large unit next door to the new Ladbrokes betting shop around the back of the old town hall is still empty, despite constant stories doing the rounds that it’s going to be a Costa Coffee. So that just leaves the former market site on Market Street. Yes work has re-commenced and we keep hearing that it’s going to be an Iceland Frozen Food outlet with ‘maybe’ a B & M store opening next door to it?? The Nat West bank closes in early June as we know and then there’ll be just the one bank left in Hoyland town centre - Barclays, which only opens four days a week!! The two things we do know for certain are that planning permission has been granted for four flats to be built above Barclays Bank, where the Karen Murillo Dance School was situated. Also a planning application has been submitted for a Subway Food Takeaway business to be opened within the 'One Stop' Mini Market on West Street in Hoyland near Kirk Balk Academy.

That’s all for now, but if you’ve heard anything that I’ve missed out or can update, correct or put me right on, then please feel free to drop me an e-mail to peter@barnsleytoday.com or call me on 07864 209811.

MOTORING

Learner Drivers on Motorways from June It’s been announced that learner drivers can take motorway driving lessons with an approved driving instructor from 4 June 2018 on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales. This will help to make sure more drivers know how to use motorways safely. At the moment, you can only have motorway lessons after you’ve passed your driving test. Some newly-qualified drivers take lessons through the voluntary Pass Plus scheme.

How the change will work Learner drivers will need to be: • accompanied by an approved driving instructor • driving a car fitted with dual controls Any motorways lessons will be voluntary. It will be up to the driving instructor to decide when the learner driver is competent enough for them. Until the law changes, it’s still illegal for a learner driver to drive on a motorway. The change only applies to learner drivers of cars. Learner motorcyclists won’t be allowed on motorways. Trainee driving instructors won’t be allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway. Motorway driving isn’t being introduced to the driving test as part of this change.

The change is being well-publicised so that: • driving instructors and learner drivers are prepared

Driving instructor vehicles and training Driving instructors can decide if they want to use a driving school rooftop box during motorway lessons, based on its instructions. The car will need to display L plates on the front and rear if the rooftop box is removed.

The changes are being made to allow learner drivers to: • get broader driving experience before taking their driving test • et training on how to join and leave the motorway, overtake and use lanes correctly • practise driving at higher speeds • understand motorway specific traffic signs • understand what to do if a vehicle breaks down on a motorway • improve their confidence to drive on the motorway unsupervised after passing their driving test

• other road users know what to expect The Highway Code rules on motorways will be updated. Driving near learner drivers on the motorway As with any vehicle on the motorway, keep a safe distance from a learner driver in front of you. Increase the gap on wet or icy roads, or in fog. You should always be patient with learner drivers. They may not be so skilful at anticipating and responding to events. 42

LOCAL NEWS

The Perfect Venue for any Occasion In 2008 the Big Lottery began offering grants to restore and refurbish community buildings. The almost derelict Rockingham Welfare Hall and associated sports field was identified as a potential project. There are many other community groups/ activities along with local & regional events running from the centre throughout the year all helping to establish the Community Centre as the venue of choice; it offers easy access and a prominent location for all, with good quality well-presented facilities. So, if you’re looking for a bright fresh space where you want to hold your gathering, meetings, conference, celebration/party events or even performances etc then look no further than the Rockingham Community Centre. At that time the Hall was run by the Rockingham Community Association (RCA), and was in a very poor state due to vandalism, lack of resources and other factors. Forge Community Partnership recognised that the Welfare Hall was an important facility for the local area and acknowledged that the old Welfare Hall had been a valued by the community for many years, and therefore agreed to be involved, taking the lead for the whole site; not without considerable risk. On taking over the Centre in 2010, the Forge’s task was to re-establish a base of activities and uses which had all dwindled and ceased, subsequently this led to the formation of the Rockingham CIC to manage the venue. The Rockingham Community Centre management committee has maintained the facilities to a high standard offering support and encouragement to new and emerging groups developing and delivering from the Rockingham Community Centre. The activities which contribute and significantly benefit the community are; however not limited to:Family Foundation Activities, Healthy Lifestyle & Early Years Development 0-3 yrs. Rockingham Brass Band & Junior section Junior Cricket Sparkles - Social group for the active older members of our communities Junior Football - Girls & Ladies MAC Fitness

Over the last eight years the use of the Centre and the sports field has gathered pace hosting Archery, Cricket, Football, and Outdoor Fitness and summer camps for children, all contributing to an healthy active lifestyle for our local community while assisting the Centre once again in becoming a successful community venue. All use of the facilities at Rockingham Community Centre help us to create a virtuous circle so that the Centre has a self-sustaining, secure future.

Businesses wanted to offer work experience opportunities Barnsley College is seeking help from local businesses who would be able to offer a work experience opportunity to its students.

Many College students are actively searching for a work experience opportunity so they can gain a real understanding of the working environment. The length and regularity of a work experience or work placement is flexible depending on the employer’s requirements and to ensure both the employer and the student’s needs are met. Placements are needed in all industries and all areas of work. Daniel Stanbra, Assistant Principal for 14-19 Students, said: “We’re reaching out to the business community to ask if they are able to offer a work experience opportunity to our students. “Offering these opportunities provides businesses with a number of benefits including bringing new ideas and allowing you to grow your own talent as you can select students you may wish to offer future employment opportunities to. This is your opportunity to inspire and guide a student whilst helping to shape the future workforce.”

If you’re interested and want to find out more information please contact the Work Placement team on 01226 216 603, email workplacements@barnsley.ac.uk or visit www.barnsley.ac.uk BA R N S L EY T ODAY MA GA Z IN E • W W W.B A R N S LEY TOD AY.COM • MAY 2018

Already for Spring Potato & Spring Veg’ Tortilla This month our healthy eating recipe tastes just as good from the fridge as it does warm, so it’s just about perfect as a take-to-work lunch. Ingredients • 400g potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces • 110g spring greens, finely shredded • 110g fresh or frozen peas • 200g asparagus tips, roughly chopped • Low-calorie cooking spray • 3 shallots, finely chopped • 8 large eggs, lightly beaten • Handful of fresh mint leaves, finely chopped • 60g reduced-fat mozzarella, finely diced

Method 1. Boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water for 10 minutes. Add the spring greens, peas and asparagus and boil for a further 4-5 minutes. Drain well and set aside until needed. 2. Spray a non-stick, ovenproof frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the shallots and stir-fry for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes, vegetables, eggs and mint, and season well. Reduce the heat to low and cook for a further 8-10 minutes. Preheat your grill to medium. 3. Remove the pan from the heat and scatter over the mozzarella. Slide the pan under the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the top is set and browned. Allow to cool slightly before turning out onto a serving plate. 4. Cut the tortilla into quarters and serve warm with a large mixed salad (or chill and take to work the next day).

• Mixed salad leaves, to serve

TRAMLINES star Tom Stade, and Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Tom Wrigglesworth. More rib ticklers come from Jarred Christmas, Dana Alexander, Daisy Earl and others who can be found taking over the Leadmill Stage by day at Tramlines for those seeking an alternative form of entertainment. Chief amongst the latest musical additions is Tokio Myers - a London musician and pianist and winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2017 who released his debut album to great acclaim at the end of last year. Plus Guardian One To Watch Tom Grennan who headlines the Leadmill Stage on Sunday at Tramlines as part of ‘The Reverend Jon McClure presents’ lineup, with his unique “polished pop-soul with a wideboy touch”.

The much-loved Sheffield band, Everly Pregnant Brothers, will also play with their ukuleles and a lethal line in lyrics with covers of anything from Coldplay to Kings of Leon. This must be seen to be believed! For its 10th year, Tramlines remains dedicated to showcasing breaking talent over its genre spanning lineup. Further highlights include Rae Morris, a major label singer/songwriter whose second album ‘Someone Out There’ has produced singles like ‘Reborn’ and ‘Dot It’ and confirms she is one of the most accomplished talents in her field; indie-pop stars Teleman, indie-rock trio Little Comets, cult shoegaze and girl pop combo Black Honey, London-based alt blues/rock band, Palace, the high octane live duo Honeyblood, international psych explorers Flamingods, and the ambitious and hotly tipped local band King No-One. Year on year, Tramlines remains one of the largest and most popular inner-city music festivals in the country. Its new home - licensed for up to 40,000 people - is just 13 minutes from the city centre by tram meaning it remains as accessible as before. The larger space can accommodate even more music lovers and can offer a wider range of world class headliners as well as plenty of exciting emerging acts and lots of great entertainment for all the family to enjoy.

Tickets for the 10th Tramlines Festival have been selling fast. They’re now on sixth release costing £79 plus booking fee for a weekend ticket, covering all three days and are available from www.tramlines.org.uk. Keep an eye out for further lineup announcements by following Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’.

LOCAL NEWS

In need of some fresh air or a fresh start? Then why not consider stepping out with local walking group the Dearne Valley Ramblers this summer? Tony Swaby from their Press Liaison Team tells us a little more...... Well summer is here at last and not too soon for our liking given the horrible winter we have just experienced. What better then than to dust off those walking boots, test your walking gear to see if (a) it still fits and (b) whether it is still serviceable, and then consider joining our friendly group to enjoy the pleasures and splendour of our delightful County and beyond? The thing is, until you have walked some of the many hundreds of public footpaths and bridleways that lay within easy reach of all of us, you can’t truly realise or appreciate what beautiful scenery is available, and it’s all for free!!! Dearne Valley Ramblers have over 20 years of walking experience and an extensive walking programme designed to cater for all tastes and abilities. We strongly believe in making our walks not only safe but fun, not merely focussing on distance alone, but taking in the lovely views on offer, whilst on the way talking with old and new friends. After all, walking should be a pleasure not a punishment!!! We have walks every Sunday commencing in the main at 10.00 a.m. throughout the year, and, from early May through to late August, on Wednesday evenings, with shorter more locally based walks commencing at the convenient time of 6.30 p.m. Why not give us a try, you’ve nothing to lose?

Our membership is growing more or less month on month, so we must be doing something right. You can either walk to improve your general health and fitness, or with a view to meeting new, friendly people whose aim it is to give you warmest of welcomes. We are very much a dog-friendly group, welcoming responsible dog owners to come along with their pets. We not only count the two-legged varieties on a walk, we also total up our four-legged furry friends as we believe that they are as of equal importance to us as a group. If you are a seasoned walker, or someone about to set off, literally, on life’s paths, and are interested in group walking, then give Dearne Valley Ramblers a try. Walk with us a few times, and, if you find that it is for you, join us on a regular basis by becoming a member of The Ramblers. However, make sure that you insert the Dearne Ramblers’ name on the application form when you do! Napoleons new menu is the Ace in the Pack This was our second visit to Napoleons casino and we were thrilled to be asked to return to review their new menu. All three dishes were cooked to perfection, the Lamb remaining juicy and succulent, whilst the Prawns and Squid were definitely crispy. The accompanying dips were all delicious and we were certainly impressed! We put ourselves in the capable hands of Craig for our main courses - he recommended the Full House Burger, from the Burger section of the menu, and the Chip Shop Platter, from the Classic selection. When both dishes arrived, we were wowed by the portion size and the presentation of each of them. The Burger consisted of 2 Beef Burgers and a Chicken Burger which were topped

We were greeted warmly, signed in as on our previous visit and shown through to the newly designed bar & restaurant area. The manager, Craig, welcomed us and explained that they had recently introduced an exciting new menu and he was keen for us to try some of the new additions. He also said that in order to improve the overall dining experience, they had introduced more formal numbered dining tables, to ease the way food was ordered and served to customers. The new menu at Napoleons consists of a wide range of starters or small plates, which are priced at 3 for £10.00. These range from simple warm breads served with Hummus and Sundried Tomatoes, to a stack of 20 Onion Rings served with BBQ sauce, Tomato Salsa and Sour Cream. We decided to try the Moroccan style Lamb Koftas with Mint yoghurt, Tempura King Prawns with Satay dip and the Crispy Salt and Pepper Squid served with Sweet Chilli Sauce. The portions are more than generous and there was plenty for the two of us to share. 60

with Jack Cheese, Smoked Bacon and Tomato Salsa. It was accompanied by a portion of Skinny Fries, Onion Rings and Homemade Coleslaw. The Burger was so large that I had to carefully dismantle it in order to eat it with at least a small amount of etiquette! The meat was all of a good quality and the whole thing was delicious. The Chip Shop Platter consisted of Battered Fish, Scampi, a Battered Sausage, Mushy Peas, Chunky Chips and Homemade Tartare Sauce, along with the traditional triangles of white bread and butter! The fish was delicious and the batter was nice and crispy whilst the Homemade Tartare sauce was an extremely tasty addition.

There’s also a wide selection of Pizzas, Hot Sandwiches and Meats from the grill on the menu. Napoleon’s even go as far as having a breakfast menu which is available after the dinner service for those who like to stay out ‘til the early hours!

The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and they cater for a wide variety of clientele, from groups of family and friends to both younger and older couples. The staff are attentive and efficient to just the right extent, which adds to the relaxed feeling of the restaurant and bar area.

Another new addition is the £2 bar special which is served Monday to Friday between 4pm and 6pm. There is a different meal available each day of the week and they range from traditional Bangers and Mash to Onion Bhajis served with Minted Yogurt and Mango Chutney. Check out their Facebook page for regular updates of the meals served each week. A new deal is also available where you receive a free starter or dessert and a free £5 bet with any main course purchased from the main menu in the restaurant between Sunday and Thursday. Rob’s Frying High at the Main In the competitive world of takeaway businesses, especially around these parts, it’s extremely refreshing to hear the views and thoughts of Rob Brett and his wife Amy, who’ve recently opened up their new business - The Main Fish & Chip Co - on Hough Lane, right next to Wombwell Main Cricket Club. thinking. Rob told me a little more; “We didn’t just want to open a Fish & Chip shop and crack on with it that would have been relatively easy. We’d got certain ideas that we wanted to work with and put in place before we opened up.” “We looked at other local businesses in the area, the location of the new premises - next to a relatively new housing estate, next door to the popular cricket club, as well as being on the main road into Wombwell and with it being next to the train station - and it felt right for us.” So how does a former accountant turn his hand to cooking the UK’s favourite takeaway? “We wanted to do it as right as we could. From the premises, the menu, how we work & operate, and of course how we cook and ultimately the quality of our food.” The impressive new premises are on the site of a former taxi business and have been completely refurbished with the premises having been virtually re-built from scratch. “A lot of our thinking behind how we planned to run the business is to keep it as local as we can. That’s something I think we’ve managed to achieve.”

And also, having personally sampled their homemade fishcakes, I’m quietly confident that they’ve got their recipe for success just right. Rob’s a former accountant, whilst his wife Amy works locally as a part-time GP and they took the decision to open up in this part of Wombwell after a lot of careful

The spotless and well designed premises inside & out are just what you want to see from a new business, particularly one that’s serving food. Personally for me one of their ‘USPs’ (Unique Selling Point) and one that I always look out for, are always the little things and the ones that keep the customers coming back. The notice board on the walls of the Main Fish & Chip Co details all you need to know about the food you are about to eat. From what brand of potatoes are being fried, the oil they are frying in and even

where the fish has come from - when it was caught and the name of the boat the fish was caught by. It’s all there for you to see - even the pies have been sourced locally from Rob Royd Farm! Both Rob and Amy went on a three day training course with the National Federation of Fish Fryers to learn the basics of the business - how to cook their fish & chips and just as important how to run their business. Anyway back to the homemade fishcakes - they are very nice indeed - not too heavy, certainly not greasy, but they are very tasty. And the recipe? “I can’t really divulge that!” Rob said with a wry smile. Apparently it’s a family recipe - “It’s basic with a little twist”, is all I could get out of a smiling Rob! Their fish is cooked to order and Rob will even cook you a larger fish if required. The fish is cut fresh every morning and the batter is made fresh also - again all with quality in mind. One extra nice touch is that virtually 99% of all their packaging is bio-degradable - again with the local community in mind. Outside the premises there’s a small patio area and even a small serving hatch on the side of the shop for the cricket club customers - what better way of enjoying a game of cricket than with a pint and some fish & chips! There’s also ample off-road car parking right outside the shop. The logo for the business features both the White Rose of Yorkshire as well as a Miners Lamp, showing how proud of their local heritage that Rob and Amy both are.

I can only recommend that you pop along and try the goods as they say - it’s well worth a visit any time. The Main Fish & Chip Co is open Tuesday from 4pm till 8pm, Wednesday to Friday 1130am till 8pm and on Saturday’s 1130am till 6pm. They’re closed Sunday & Monday’s. You can also contact them on 01226 341072 or follow them on facebook at The Main Fish & Chip Co.

Barbara sheds the pounds for a healthier lifestyle Having been unhappy with her weight for some time, Wombwell lady Barbara Lincoln-Lisle was persuaded by one of her close friends to give Slimming World a go to see if it could help her. As it turned out it was a decision that changed Barbara’s life forever. Here’s her story.... “When I first came to Slimming World I remember saying to my friend who’d persuaded me to give it a go that I’d be happy ‘just’ to lose a stone in time for Christmas,” Barbara told me as we chatted after the Friday morning Slimming World group at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. ‘That stone’ was Barbara’s original target and is now nothing but a distant memory as she’d actually managed to lose two stone by her Christmas deadline. “It’s snowballed from there really and I enjoyed the group so much that I’ve stayed ever since.” Forty-eight weeks later and Barbara is an amazing six and a half stone lighter and, as you can see from her before and after pictures on the right, she looks truly amazing and, with whole due respect to her, almost a new woman. Before Barbara started at Slimming World she suffered with Asthma and was often breathless. She couldn’t walk up hills and suffered with other mobility issues. She was also lethargic and felt tired for long periods of the day and her general self-confidence was at an all-time low. Barbara told me a little more: “My life has completely changed since I started at Slimming World. I now take the dogs out for their walks regularly, my asthma is a lot more manageable and consequently my medication for my asthma has been significantly reduced. I can also play with my grandchildren without getting out of breath which is something I always wanted to be able to do but couldn’t because of my weight. But I couldn’t have achieved any of this without the encouragement that I’ve received from the group as a whole and the consultant Nicola.” One emotional and personal point that Barbara told me was that she’d never been able to wear her Mum’s wedding ring because her fingers were too big. But, since her weight loss, she now wears it all the time. So as their slogan says - Slimming World really does touch hearts and saves lives. 68

Barbara, pictured above on the right, with Slimming World Consultant Nicola Gelder

When Barbara first started at Slimming World she was a size 24 to 26 now she’s down to a size 14 to 16 - an amazing effort by anyone’s standards. Barbara has also stayed in target for the past six months and maintained her weight loss journey. “My whole outlook towards food as changed and I’m not constantly snacking and eating all the wrong foods, “ Barbara told me. So what is Barbara’s next aim? “I’m trying to get my Diamond award - which I’ll hopefully be able to achieve for staying within my target weight for a full 12 months.” Barbara told me. Barbara’s enthusiasm is a credit to not only herself, but also to the group that her consultant Nicola Gelder runs at Wombwell Main Cricket Club every Friday morning at 9am & 11am.

The Power of Retinol

In search of the perfect skin

Retinol, Retin-A, Retinoid, Retinol Palmitate. These are a few of the terms you may have heard of that are serious buzz words in the skincare market at present. Retinol is the purest form of Vitamin A and converts the quickest into retinoic acid (the magnet that is attracted to issues retinol can fix), therefore results can be seen quicker by the user. All other terms are derivatives and therefore aren’t as potent (unless prescribed by a specialist skin dermatologist). Vitamin A is used medically to treat various dietary requirements; however we thrive from using it in our skincare to give us amazing younger looking, clearer and brighter skin. Retinol formulations work deep into the skin cells by encouraging an increase of collagen production. This thickens the skin layer called the epidermis, therefore smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles which are on the surface. Retinol also stimulates cell turn over, enhancing the skins complexion by reducing the amount of dead, dull skin cells. This goes on to promote brighter and clearer skin to become more visible. The perfect product ingredient for the acne prone and scarred ladies and gents amongst us. There are various Retinol products on the beauty market at the moment, so finding the one that works the best is 70

key to ensuring you will receive the best results. Lots of ‘over-the-counter’ or ‘off-the-shelf’ products don’t state the percentages of retinol contained in them (and legally they don’t have to). However, if they do it is usually to promote the fact they use a high percentage. Becoming aware of how they work will also give you a more informed decision on the products that are most effective. Retinol containing products work to their advantage as ‘leave-on’ products. For example, if a cleanser contains retinol it would be washed off the skin within minutes, therefore, not being given the chance to work its magic. Serums and moisturisers are without a doubt the easiest way to ensure retinol is absorbed effectively. They should also be used at night time only. As Vitamin A is diminished in sunlight, it would be pointless applying it through the day. It is also advisable to use a retinol product that encapsulates the retinol whilst it is travelling through the skin. This encapsulating keeps the retinol stable and potent to drive to the heart of the skin cells, where it is vitally needed.

Dermalogica have three amazing retinol containing products:

Overnight Retinol Repair (0.5%), Overnight Retinol Repair 1% and Age Reversal Eye Complex. The first two are for the face and neck and the third is for use around the eyes. All of which, use Dermalogica’s own micro-encapsulation technology to ensure the successful transmission of retinol throughout the epidermis. As always, it is vital a suitable SPF is used EVERY day to enhance the results you will be starting to achieve. A SPF will protect your skin from free radical damage caused by UVA rays from the sun, regardless of the British weather. It will work together with your retinol product, rather than against it if you were to not wear one. So, if you have skin ageing concerns, dry/flaky, blemish prone or pigmented skin, a retinol-targeted treatment product will be your new best friend. Drop into your knowledgeable skin care specialists today and start your retinol journey. I promise, you won’t look back.

More memories from King Street, Hoyland Following on from our article in the March issue about the retirement of local hairdresser Sally Sykes and the closure of her salon ‘The Vanity Box’ on King Street in Hoyland, just after we’d gone to print with the April issue the e-mail below landed on our laptop from Dave Gillick; “Referring to your photo of the Vanity Box hair salon in the March issue and Peter`s Barber Shop, as a kid in the 50/60s there was a shop - Bradley`s - where we used to buy green sticks (to make kites or javelins)and balls of string to fly the kites. In fact, they seemed to sell anything, (so it seemed to us) and for only pennies too.” “The shop was just below Firths Hardware, and may be the one you`re wanting to find out about. Does anyone else remember it?” “The shop was directly across King Street from the Co-op Grocery, where my Aunt Audrey (Bennett, later Platts) worked. That building is still there, it’s the last one on the current one-way system. The archway where the shop deliveries were made is still there today.” “In those days, Hoyland seemed like Disneyworld, all the pityards and scrap to play on, the tips to climb. Rockingham, Platts Common, Elsecar and Barrow - there weren`t enough hours in the day for us.” “Fresh air, muck (and antibodies) - by `eck we had good times!!”

We’re also indebted once again this month to our 'mystery letter' writer who wrote us yet another very nice letter in reply to the same article as mentioned above “Dear Sir, Regards what was the old Post Office buildings in Hoyland. I remember my Grandfather telling me there used to be a Post Office at the very top of Milton Road. Adjoining the Post Office was a very small shop owned by a Mr Gibson and next door to that was a newsagent and toy shop called ‘Pickerings’. Later this was bought by Mr Ben Smithies and then later on it was taken over by Mr Ellaway. “At No.2 was Ford & Marsland Ladies & Children’s Outfitters, this later became May Taylor’s shop. At No.3 was a Fishmonger that was owned by a Mr Cochrane who later sold it a Mr Ben Sorsby. Next door to this was a Ladies Hairdressers which was reached via a steep set of steps owned by a Mrs Bessie Fletcher, who was the lady my Aunty chose to do her hair – this later became known as ‘Beryls’ - I remember this has she did my hair for my Wedding in 1952. Hope this is of use and interest to you and your readers. PS – Blame my handwriting but the Bicycle shop owner mentioned on page 35 in the March issue was a Mr Bircher and not Bincher has printed 74

F R O M D AY S G O N E B Y E X T R A As well as the correspondence on the opposite page, we also received the e-mail below Barbara Gauton of Hoyland, who told us some of her fond memories of her younger years in and around Hoyland; I read with interest your article in the March issue about the businesses that used to be in the King Street area of Hoyland opposite the Vanity Box. The shop that’s been previously mentioned called Kerfoot’s was actually next door to where ‘Snippers’ Hair Salon now is - so Kerfoot’s was above where the archway is. The business that used to occupy the premises where ‘Snippers’ Hair salon now is was called Marsden’s Fruit & Vegetable shop. Between 1928 and 1961 my grandparents, Florrie & Thomas Sabin, used to run the Fish & Chip shop where King Street Fisheries now is. I can remember the fish being delivered to us from Elsecar train station in their wooden crates that were packed with ice - their big eyes would be poking through the sides of the crate. My Dad as a young boy had the job of going down to Elsecar train station with a wheelbarrow (which had been made by his Uncle - Horace Parkin - who worked at Elsecar Foundry). I can also remember the cows would come in by train and then were herded up King Street to one of the many butchers that were in Hoyland at that time and would then be slaughtered on the premises of the shops. My Dad’s sister Dorothy recalled to me that one time a Cow had broken away and actually entered the Fish shop yard where we were. As a child I can remember the great view of Wentworth from where we lived on Gill Street in Hoyland and also a story from a long time ago about Dr. Wiggins, who was visiting a patient of his who lived in the old Sabastopol (which is now Millmount Road of course) and he told his patient “This view is better than any medicine that I can give you”. Because I was born at the Fish & Chip shop and enjoyed the same view for many years I soon realised that Gill Street was the only place for me to live. My Grandfather, like many more was a soldier in the 1st World War. He was at the Battle of the Somme. An author Martin Middlebrook wrote a book called “The First Day of the Somme”. My Grandfather is mentioned in this book, along with many more old soldiers, who gave their account of the Battle of the Somme to the book’s author. Thanks to Barbara Gauton for her lovely e-mail and her follow-up phone call, it’s so nice to hear local people’s recollections of how times, and indeed how Hoyland used to look.

If you have any memories of Hoyland that you’d like to share with us or tell us about or, better still, any pictures that you’d like to share then feel free to e-mail me at peter@barnsleytoday.com

Bean Amazed

In the UK one of the most widely grown beans is the kidney bean, otherwise known as a runner bean. They are delicious when picked young and cooked just perfectly but soon grow stringy and tough and even half a dozen plants can produce more beans than you know what to do with! Why not try something different? There are many other climbing and dwarf beans to choose from and growing a selection can give you more culinary options.

tough, boil them for longer and remove the seedcoat to make broad bean hummus.

Broad beans give you the first bean crop of the year and can be sown in the autumn in milder areas giving an even earlier crop. Choose one of the long pod varieties such as ‘Imperial Green Longpod’ for smaller, more tender beans. The white bean varieties such as ‘Aquadulce’ tend to produce fewer, larger beans that become tough more rapidly. Pick them frequently for young, sweet, tender beans that can be lightly steamed and when the seeds get

Climbing beans also produce a variety of different types, pencil pod varieties are best for eating the young beans whole in the pod, for a colourful dish choose a variety such as ‘Blue Coco’, a heritage variety which produces purple podded beans. ‘Coco’ varieties produce short more rounded seeds in different colours while the haricot varieties produce longer bean seeds in slender pods. The ‘Haricot Blanc’ or cannellini types are also good for shelling and drying and can be cooked later to make haricot bean mash. Dwarf French beans are similar, usually producing stringless slim pods but the beans tend to hang down low on the plant, touching the soil and if you have problems with slugs and snails then the climbing varieties are better. Borlotti types are flat podded and produce larger, more meaty beans for shelling and eating fresh rather like peas or can be dried for use in winter casseroles, or for making your own ‘baked beans’. The purple/pink mottled pods are attractive on the plant and they have few pest problems. Lab beans need a warm season to produce a decent crop but are attractive plants with purple flowers and broad purple or green pods, they are picked young and eaten whole in a stir fry or curry. You can also try growing your own soya beans, black eye beans and chick peas. They do need a good long, warm season to get a decent crop but are great fun to grow! Beans are happy on most soils as they generate their own nitrogen. You can sow them direct in the ground in late May or start them early in pots in a greenhouse early April to get a longer growing season. They need to be kept wellwatered while the pods are forming.

L E G A L with Peace Legal Solicitors, Wombwell

Spring is the time of plans and projects With the season of Spring now with us many are looking to move home and start afresh; Peace Legal understand how stressful planning to move home can be. The legal side is not often considered until much later when it is sometimes found that matters may be more complicated than first envisaged. Although sometimes transactions are difficult, our property team is committed to making your transaction go as smoothly as possible. We will always be friendly and efficient and we will ensure that each case and client receive the individual assistance they need.

Selling a property:Please contact us as soon as you receive an offer so that we can carry out the following:• A pply for the title deeds from the lender (necessary to enable us to produce the contract). • Give you a breakdown of the costs involved. • Send you a Sale Questionnaire and Fixtures and Fittings List to complete, this forms part of the contract with the purchaser. A draft contract is sent to the purchaser’s lawyer, together with all the supporting documents. When the purchaser’s lawyer has received the local searches and their clients’ mortgage offer and is satisfied as to the title, we will negotiate a completion date and the deposit with them, taking into account your instructions. Provided all parties are satisfied contracts can then be exchanged. On the completion date, the property must be vacated and be clear of all your possessions (other than those which you have agreed to leave) by 12 noon leaving the keys to the property with the estate agents, unless other arrangements have been made and agreed to. From the proceeds sent to us by the purchaser’s lawyer we will pay off the mortgage (if any) and settle the estate agents’ invoice.

Buying a property:Once you have made an offer and it has been accepted, your estate agents will provide us with sales instructions. 82

The sellers’ lawyer will send us the draft contact, as soon as we receive this we will:• Apply for searches as appropriate. • Examine the contract and title. We may feel it necessary to raise additional enquiries of the sellers’ lawyer. Where borrowing is required to buy the property, the mortgage offer must be received from the lender in advance of exchange of contracts. When we have received all the requested searches, offer of mortgage and have satisfied ourselves as to the title, we will write to you to arrange an appointment to sign the contract, Transfer and mortgage deed. It is at this time that we will require your deposit and our fees.

Common terms explained Completion date - this is your moving date. Any moving date that you suggest or agree with other buyers/ sellers is not guaranteed until contracts have been exchanged. Contracts - sale and/or purchase agreements. Conveyancing - this is the term used to describe the legal process of transferring ownership of property from one person to another.

LEGAL

Disbursements - this refers to any expenses incurred by us on your behalf, which you pay to us once your sale / purchase has gone through. Exchange of Contracts - this is when all buyers/sellers in the chain have signed an agreement and the solicitors exchange them. On exchange, the agreed moving date is inserted into the contract. This date is final and cannot be changed. Property fixtures and fittings list - this sets out the fixtures and fittings that are/aren’t included in the agreed sale price. Searches - if you are buying a property, we will make several searches on your behalf. These searches cover things such as whether there have been any planning applications relating to your property. Title deeds - these show ownership of a property and also set out any rights or obligations that affect the property. A new law has been introduced whereby the price that you are paying for the property will be stated on the title deeds. Therefore when the time comes to sell your home, a copy of the deeds will be sent to the new buyers who will see the price that you initially paid for the property. As part of our commitment to reducing your transaction time, it is our policy to make ourselves available to answer enquiries over the telephone as they arise. Where this is not possible we will call you back as soon as we are able and we will strive to reply the next day to any letters we receive. We can provide a free estimate for work. However, depending on the complexity of the case the final price may vary from the initial estimate.

Having only recently moved to Elsecar, this month our Travel feature writer Jordan Burnish enlightens us on the area she grew up in - the county of Rutland. Here's a few little gems that she recommends we take a look at.....

Walking the Hambleton Peninsula

FACT:

Starting in the village of Hambleton, this five mile walk allows you to explore the shores of Rutland Water and take in the scenic views. It also guides you through woodlands and a sheep pasture with the majority of the circuit directing you along a stone track. Within the village sits the 12th Century St Andrews Church and the local pub The Finch’s Arms, which is a great place to end your walk.

In the 17th Century, Rutland was home to England’s smallest man. Sir Jeffery Hudson, who was widely known as the Rutland Dwarf measured just 18 inches tall. He was also somewhat famous for jumping out of a pie that was being presented to the Queen at a banquet. You can visit the cottage in which he lived in Oakham.

Rutland County Museum Though Rutland maybe small in size, that certainly isn’t the case with its history. Containing 11,000 objects that have been collected around nearby villages, the museum is the best place to visit if you want to learn more about England’s smallest county. Displays currently include information about rural trade and rural life with impressive agricultural exhibits and also information about historical sites such as the architecture of Oakham School, which dates back to 1584. Best of all, admission is free.

You can read more of Jordan’s Travel articles on her blog at www.lostcountrybumpkin. wordpress.com

Top Tips Spend less time in the shower Tempting as it is to stand in a nice warm shower; by spending one minute less in the shower each day will save up to £7 off your energy bills each year, per person. And with a water meter installed, this could save a further £12 off annual water and sewerage bills. As an example, a four person family could save up to £80 a year.

Improved paper and cardboard recycling service from August

Portraits by local artist go on display at the Cooper Gallery

A change that will make household recycling easier in Barnsley was recently approved by Cabinet last month.

Work by portrait artist Richard Kitson is now on display at the Cooper Gallery until Wednesday, 13 June.

From August, the council’s recycling contractor will have access to a new sorting facility currently being built. Residents will then able to recycle paper and cardboard together in the blue bin, in a step that will see the white paper recycling sack phased out. The decision has been taken following feedback from residents and changes in recycling habits. Since 2014, paper recycling has reduced significantly. At the same time cardboard recycling has increased, with more people buying items online and needing to recycle packaging. The council would like to thank residents for their recycling efforts and ask them to continue to put just cardboard into the blue bin until August when paper can then be included. Reminders about recycling will be given by the council including information on how to correctly sort other household recycling into the coloured bins. Matt Gladstone, Executive Director for Place, said: “We’re already good at recycling here in Barnsley thanks to the efforts of residents, and we hope to be able to increase our kerbside recycling even more in the next year. “We know that the paper sacks were quite unpopular and it’s time to move on from them; we hope that this decision will be welcomed. “As part of our #EverybodyThink campaign we’ll be sharing lots of useful hints and tips for Barnsley residents to help them sort household items correctly and recycle more.” For more information on what can be recycled and what to put in your bin, visit barnsley.gov. uk/recycling. 90

Richard who recently appeared on Sky Arts, Portrait Artist of the Year 2018, is exhibiting a selection of eighteen portraits and drawings dating from 2008 to the present day. Having being selected from thousands of entries to take part in the competition, during the show, Richard painted a portrait of Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox MBE over a four hour period. An artist who champions, the now rare method of working from life, his work uniquely captures the magic and intimacy of portrait art. Working directly from sitters, rather than the now more popular method of photographs, the Barnsley born artist is delighted that his exhibition will be seen for the very first time at the Cooper Gallery. The exciting art space holds fond memories for the artist who first volunteered there at the young age of seventeen, where he gained experience in hanging paintings and providing information about the artwork to visitors. Throughout the exhibition there will be a variety of workshops and talks taking place that will offer visitors further insight into Richards’s methods and inspirations. Phillip Spurr, Service Director, Culture, Housing & Regulation said “It is really poignant that Richard will be returning to the Gallery to display this body of work for the first time. We are proud to host paintings and drawings by such a talented local artist, particularly ones that have been created in such a unique way. The exhibition perfectly complements the Cooper Gallery’s outstanding permanent collection, which itself contains a number of spectacular portraits.” For more information about the exhibition visit www.cooper-gallery.com

BPL sites come together to raise money for Sport Relief BPL sites across Barnsley did their bit for Sport Relief by hosting fundraising ‘Stepathon’ classes in their clubs.

Over £600 was raised for the charity thanks to the generosity of staff and members; some of whom also got into the spirit by wearing 80’s themed fancy dress to take part in sessions at clubs including the Metrodome, Royston, and Dearneside Leisure Centres (pictured above). BPL chief executive Tim Wilson said: “A big thank you to everyone who took part in a Sport Relief event at our sites. New school starter leaflets create a buzz Barnsley Council is working with primary schools and early years settings across the borough to make good attendance part of new starters’ school lives. The new starter leaflets schools give out to families of children who start school for the first time in September include two bee characters – Be There and Be on Time to reinforce the importance of school attendance and punctuality – even for Barnsley’s youngest learners. School readiness is also a big part of successful attendance and there are some top tips included for parents and carers, along with the big kid school challenge for children – a list of activities teachers would love children to be able to do by the time they start school. Gary Kelly, Head of Barnsley Schools Alliance, said: “We are so pleased that schools have agreed to work together with Barnsley Schools Alliance Board and the council’s Education Welfare Service in this way. Good attendance and punctuality are linked to attainment and it’s our ambition that every Barnsley child achieves their potential. Although these children are just starting out in their school lives, forming good habits will set them up for life.”

THE LAST WORD

This month Sue Bentham, our lady who always has the ‘Last Word’ tells us why she thinks the High Street is dead.....

Death of the High Street? We are told that these are exciting times for Barnsley and outlying districts. Many millions of hard-earned council taxpayers money is going towards refurbishing and overhauling the town centres (again!) of both Barnsley and Hoyland and the council are desperately trying to attract new businesses to justify the massive expense. Barnsley council have loudly proclaimed the fact that the first big name retailer to sign up for the new Glassworks complex is Next. So what will happen with the Next branches already in situ at Cortonwood and the Alhambra Centre? I think we can all work that one out.

HAVE YOU GOT A FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENT THAT YOU’D LIKE TO MAKE?

Birthday, Wedding, Anniversary, Birth or Death, Graduation, Congratulations Whatever the Occasion then why not announce it to the local community in our new Family Announcement Section that starts next month in our June issue. Prices start from as little as £20 - if you’d like to find out more then please call Peter on 07864 209811 or e-mail peter@barnsleytoday.com 98

Of course what this refurbishment means is more shops, more fast food eateries and more coffee shops. (In reality what we usually end up with are more betting shops and more charity shops.) My point is this - can we support any more shops and shopping malls? There is surely only a finite amount of spending money to go around and shoppers have been tightening their belts for a good while now and, I believe will continue to do so. It’s recently been reported that footfall in Barnsley town centre was down by around 230,000 over the recent Christmas period. Is that an indication of shopping fatigue? Belt-tightening? Have the town planning bigwigs not noticed the sheer number of retail names who have recently either gone down the pan or issued profit warnings and begun store closures? Here’s some of them - M & S, New Look, Maplins, Toys R Us, House of Fraser, Carpetright, Debenhams, Homebase, Lloyds Pharmacy, Thomas Cook, John Lewis, H & M. Restaurants and takeaways are not immune either with Jamie’s Italian and even posh burger chain Byron proving that there are problems at both ends of the spectrum. Who knows what the eventual toll will be amongst smaller retailers and market traders and of course banks are closing branches like there’s no tomorrow. Reasons given for this include the rise of online shopping and banking, high overheads and belt-tightening but really, have we reached saturation point when it comes to the sheer number of shops? Perhaps it’s time for the town planners to start thinking differently or risk turning our town centres into a wasteland of empty shops and boarded-up properties.
