We hear you have exciting news. I am going over to Berlin, Germany to play Basketball for Australia in the Special Olympics. This is my first time going overseas and I am going for two weeks. Four other people from South Australia are going too. I really want to see around Berlin, I am looking forward to trying the food.
What is the best thing about playing Basketball?
I love how inclusive it is. I love playing defence because I like stealing the ball.
Barkuma Buzz with Madi
Madi Fox is a basketball superstar. After playing for South Australia in the Special Olympics National Games, Madi was picked to join the Australian basketball team for the Special Olympics World Games. People from all over the world compete in the games. This year they were held in Berlin in Germany. Madi’s team played well and won a very close game to win a bronze medal. Well done and congratulations Madi!

Who is your basketball role model?
Michael Jordan because of all of the skills he can do.
Do you have any advice for anyone interested in playing basketball or any other sport?
Practice your skills and look for an inclusive team to learn to play. It can be frustrating sometimes but keep practicing your skills.
What made you choose basketball?
I watched a friend’s basketball game, and I loved watching them defend and how they bounced the ball.
We spoke to Madi before she left.

Train Sim World 3
By Dave
Control famous trains from the USA, UK, and Europe, carrying heavy cargo and fast passengers. Experience the authentic feeling of being inside the train’s cockpit and explore beautiful landscapes on real routes. Start at the Training Centre to learn about railways or take on new challenges with changing weather conditions that affect how your train handles.
What is the game about?
All sorts of trains and train driving. There is lots of information about how the different types of trains operate. The game is based on real trains – steam, diesel and electric.
Objective
To learn how to operate trains and transport either cargo or passengers to and from stations. It depends on how large and heavy the cargo is. If you have a fairly long train that’s heavy with oil/coal, you want to set the train up to operate in a way that can pull and/or push the weight.
Complexity
It feels like you’re actually doing something, especially with the steam trains. The engaging part is the complexity of controls and the train physics they’ve programmed into it.
Positives
I like the way the diesel trains operate. They have all sorts of levers and switches all around the cabin, even behind you you have a whole board of switches to use. Most of them do something! You can turn a train on from scratch, you might even have to go outside of the train to start the engine.
Negatives
It is very mission based. If you crash a train, you get the ‘mission fail’ message, but don’t get to see the impact of the crash. It can get a bit boring too, especially when you are driving slow up a hill. The game is not multiplayer, but that would be good as there is another seat in the train.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics are ok, but could be improved. The trains look great, but the scenery and other transport are basic. There are no animals either, which could add another interest. Sounds are pretty cool and accurate to the specific trains.
Difficulty: 5/10
The game is fairly easy, but you will spend time thinking about what you’re doing and what you need to do. You can get stuck in weather with wet tracks, and need to know how to get moving.
Who would enjoy this game?
Anyone interested in trains or simulation games.
Dave plays Train Sim World 3 on his PC, but the game is also available on consoles.

BOOK
New Moon – Stephenie Meyer
By Mark Edwards
This is the second book in the Twilight series. This book is about romance, Edward and Jacob both fall in love with Bella. Jacob is a Werewolf and Edward is a Vampire. It’s got good characters. I liked reading about Edward & Jacob fighting for Bella. I would recommend this book because it is full of surprises and twists, and I love the characters. I would give this book 5 stars.
PODCAST
On Purpose – Jay Shetty
By Kylie Chum
Jay talks about various topics, such as mental health and life skills. He also interviews celebrities and business people. In one episode, he talks to Lewis Howe, a baseball player with dyslexia. Lewis spoke about his troubles and how he worked on his confidence. This podcast has given me a fresh way of thinking and applying changes to myself.
MUSIC Rush! – Måneskin
By Kylie Chum
Måneskin’s four members originated from Italy. This band ignited my love for rock and roll again. They performed as an act for Eurovision in 2022 with the song SUPERMODEL. The latest album ‘Rush!’ has awesome tracks. It gives off a villain vibe, but partying at a fun beach poolside.

We Love Op Shops
Irene is stylish and spend savvy! She tells us what she loves about shopping at Op Shops and what to expect.
I love going to Op Shops. I have found some really good bargains like my pink cardigan which was tagged as $2. I have also found Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses there once too.
My favourite Op Shops are Munno Para Savers, Camden Community Centre Op Shop, & the Salvation Army Thrift Shop at Marion which is where I found the cardigan. I like these shops because they have a good stock of clothes, some still with their tags on, plus bags, jewellery, and shoes.
Will is currently volunteering at an Op Shop through the SLES program. Will told us what he likes about it.
I like being able to sort DVD’s and books. The people there are nice to me and help with my volunteer work. I put price tags onto items and I like sorting things and the team work. I would encourage others to look at volunteer work at an Op Shop because it gives you experience and might help you to get a job somewhere else.

Spring in the Garden
When you are gardening, it is important to take note of the seasons. Spring is a great time to be in the garden, so this month we are focusing on gardening through September, October and November.
We interviewed Rob, who shared the secrets to keeping his Salisbury garden thriving. He gave us some tips about the 6 main tasks to focus on in the garden:
1 Harvesting
I have just harvested snow peas and onions. Check out this huge onion!
2 Soil Preparation
You’ve got to keep turning the soil over with a big garden fork. We also add horse and cow manure, and sometimes blood and bone.
3 Weeding
You can pull weeds out with your hands or a little shovel. Or you can carefully spray them with poison.
4 Planting
In spring we plant new vegetables for them to grow. We’ve tried lots like carrots, but now we’re just planting tomatoes. We also plant pansies in the front garden, our lavender goes wild. Spring bulbs come up by themselves – we have jonquils. We also have calla lillies, succulents, agapanthus, native frangipani and yukka in our garden.
5 Pruning & Trimming
It’s time to prune back citrus trees once they’ve finished fruiting.
6 Pest Control
You put snail pellets in the right spots. You have to wear gloves when touching the pellets and then wash hands because it is poisonous, be careful.
