We Begin   Anthony  S.  Bryk   July  26,  2010

Introduc<ons •  My  personal  narra<ve   •  The  new  mission  of  the  Carnegie  Founda<on   •  Our  beliefs:  the  principles  and  commitments   we  bring  to  the  work   •  The  journey  begins:  the  week  ahead  and   looking  beyond

I. Personal  Journey   •  On  the  shores  of  the  scenic  Passaic  River

Personal Journey   •  Math  as  a  gateway     to  opportunity

Personal Journey   • An  interest  in  educa<onal    organiza<ons,  how  they  work    and  how  they  might  improve

•  Good  research,

engaging prac<ce   to  improve  it

•  Now  returning  to  my   roots  as  a  teacher  of   sta<s<cs

Personal Journey   •  Our  students  are  oQen  required  to  take  our   courses—”not  good  at  math”,  “How  is  this   relevant  to  my  life?”   •  To  see  the  “lights  turn  on”   –  “I  can  do  this”

•  “This is  actually  interes<ng”

–  Empowering tools  and  ways  of  thinking  about  our   world  that  can  help  us  act  beYer  in  the  world.

This is  the  legacy  of  a  teaching  life,  the  lives  we  touch.    We  can  do  this.

II. New  Mission  for  the  Carnegie  Founda4on

We Live  in  Extraordinary  <mes:    An  unprecedented  call   • The  three  aims

New Mission  for  the  Carnegie  Founda4on

• Educational improvement at scale requires a more vital R&D infrastructure • Learning by doing

Developmental Mathema4cs    in  Community  Colleges    A  major  ins<tu<on  for  advancing  social  equity  and   fueling  21st  century  labor  needs.    Yet  many  students  find  their  path  to  success  blocked  by   developmental  ed  requirements.    A  high  leverage  problem    A  complex  problem  system

RESEARCH

NETWORKED IMPROVEMENT   COMMUNITY   ENGAGED  IN   PROBLEM-‐ CENTERED   R&D

“We study  it”   “We  design  and  test  it,   Learning  together          you  implement  it”   to  improve      Average  effect  sizes   “We  know  nothing  un<l  we          have  confirming  neuro-‐imaging  data”   Glacial  pace

PRACTICE

Warp speed   “We  do  it”      We  each  solve  it  in  our  own  way            in  our  own  colleges,  classrooms        We  learn  (as  individuals)  from              what  we  do        Highly  variable  effects

A Concrete  Example:  Small  High   Schools  Reform

• Start new  small  schools,  restructure  exis<ng  big  schools   • Accountability:  numbers  of  schools  and  students   • A  na<onal  evalua<on  to  sum  up  effects   • But  in  the  end,  what  did  we  learn,  what  did  we  really  accomplish?     Together  we  can  do  beYer!

III. The  Collaboratory:  A  Networked   Improvement  Community   •  An  R&D  community  organizing  around  making  measurable  progress  in   advancing  student    learning  in  developmental  mathema<cs  and   opportuni<es  more  generally  for  success  in  college   •  A  commitment  to  a  con<nuous  improvement  orienta<on  “learning  in   prac<ce  to  improve  it”   •  Working  within  a  common  improvement  framework  that  we  will  co-‐ develop  together   •  Guided  by  a  common  data  system  (which  we  will  also  co-‐develop   together)

•  This is  Learning  by  Doing

IV. Engaged  in  Improvement  Research

Improvement Research:  The  Four  Ques<ons   What  are  we  trying  to  accomplish?   How  do  we  understand  the  problem(s)  and  system  in  which     they  are  embedded?   What  change  might  we  introduce?   How  will  we  know  that  the  changes  are  an  improvement?

V. Network  Beliefs  and  Norms   We  Can  Do  More  Together,   than  Anyone  of  Us  Can  Do   Alone   •   We  are  an  open  community.

• We commit  as  a  network  to  share   openly  whatever  we  learn,  whatever   we  develop.

•  We  are  an  inclusive  community.

•  We  invite  others  to  join  who  share   our  goals  and  share  our   commitments  to  learn  as  an  R&D   community  from  prac<ce  to   improve  it.

Network Norms            Transparency  and  Trust   •  We  begin  a  journey   together  toward  a  valued   goal  with  principles  to  guide     but  no  map  or  blueprint  to   follow   •  An  honest  and  safe  place   to  try,  to  fail,  to  learn,  to  try     again  and  ul<mately  to   improve

Network Norms      Joy  in  the  work   –  In  each  others  company   –  In  our  collec<ve  pursuit
