Personal  Journey   •  Our  students  are  oQen  required  to  take  our   courses—”not  good  at  math”,  “How  is  this   relevant  to  my  life?”   •  To  see  the  “lights  turn  on”   –  “I  can  do  this”  

•  “This  is  actually  interes<ng”  

–  Empowering  tools  and  ways  of  thinking  about  our   world  that  can  help  us  act  beYer  in  the  world.    

This  is  the  legacy  of  a  teaching  life,  the  lives  we  touch.    We  can  do  this.

• Educational improvement at scale requires a more vital R&D infrastructure • Learning by doing


Developmental  Mathema4cs    in  Community  Colleges    A  major  ins<tu<on  for  advancing  social  equity  and   fueling  21st  century  labor  needs.    Yet  many  students  find  their  path  to  success  blocked  by   developmental  ed  requirements.    A  high  leverage  problem    A  complex  problem  system

A  Concrete  Example:  Small  High   Schools  Reform  

• Start  new  small  schools,  restructure  exis<ng  big  schools   • Accountability:  numbers  of  schools  and  students   • A  na<onal  evalua<on  to  sum  up  effects   • But  in  the  end,  what  did  we  learn,  what  did  we  really  accomplish?     Together  we  can  do  beYer!  


III.  The  Collaboratory:  A  Networked   Improvement  Community   •  An  R&D  community  organizing  around  making  measurable  progress  in   advancing  student    learning  in  developmental  mathema<cs  and   opportuni<es  more  generally  for  success  in  college   •  A  commitment  to  a  con<nuous  improvement  orienta<on  “learning  in   prac<ce  to  improve  it”   •  Working  within  a  common  improvement  framework  that  we  will  co-­‐ develop  together   •  Guided  by  a  common  data  system  (which  we  will  also  co-­‐develop   together)  

•  This  is  Learning  by  Doing
