BARCOLANA NEW / Evolution and continuity

THE CRUISING CLASS, A NEW RANKING LIST NEXT TO THE OVERALL

A

sporting event that repeats every year but bravely changes and introduces new elements to keep the pace of yachting evolution. The Barcolana proposes a range of important changes explained here and in the Sailing Instructions to be issued on 2 October.

Barcolana because they are the heart of this event. With a ranking list dedicated to these sailors, we will unveil many long-standing challenges between the crews consisting of expert mariners, taking care of their yacht with devotion and considering the Barcolana a true popular competition”.

An important change involves boats ranking: next to the overall ranking list, which considers the order of arrival and category according to the LOA of all boats crossing the finish line (no changes here), from this year there will also be a ranking list dedicated to “Cruisers”, i.e. yachts used for leisure cruising: these boats, with a lower racing performance rarely manage to step on the podium, but in Barcolana they are the majority. The “Miramare Trophy” has been created for them.

Defining the Cruising class has not been easy: a technical committee consisting of the former president Mauro Parladori, expert sail maker, by the naval architect Maurizio Cossutti and coordinated by sport officer Davide Favretto – worked during the winter to define the Cruising class, starting from the international racing rules of sailing. In order to be included in this category, upon entering for the regatta, the skipper or boatowner will put a mark in the box on the entry form: this choice will be checked automatically with the entries database containing the data of yachts that took part in previous editions. A technical commission will be set up during the registration period to check new entries and solve any possible doubts.

“I really like this change – explained president Vincenzo Spina – since I was appointed president of this sailing club, my aim has been to find a way to award the many cruising yachts that take part in the

NEW MEASURES AGAINST DEAD CALM

he aim is to promote the sailing industry through events and initiatives involving leisure yachting. In addition to this, we want to strengthen relations between the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic Seas and create promotional synergies between the International Boat Show in Genoa and the Barcolana, the nautical events with the greatest number of spectators and participants at international level. These are briefly the objectives of the project Nautical bases of European interest launched by UCINA Confindustria Nautica, co-organizer of Genoa International Boat Show to be held this year from 2 to 6 October with a totally renovated and innovative layout - and the Società velica di Barcola e Grignano, organizer of the Barcolana, the most crowded regatta in the Mediterranean, with over 1800 sailboats at the start, running for the 45th year and to be held on 13 October in the Gulf of Trieste.

Last year’s dead calm enabled organizers to set up several new measures. The regatta can be shortened at MARK 2 (no longer only at MARK 3), and the Barcolana Jury will have umpires present at all marks, ready – in case the course is shortened – to record the passage at each mark. This will also provide a greater control. This is an extra organizing effort to enable competitors to finish the race. “We are studying further details to arrange class finishes – explained president Spina – as it happens in some long races: smaller boats will have a shorter course compared to bigger boats in case of adverse weather conditions, i.e. bad weather or extreme dead clam”.

More in detail, the agreement signed by Anton Francesco Albertoni and Vincenzo Spina, presidents, of UCINA Confindustria Nautica and Società velica di Barcola e Grignano respectively, entails a series of activities to be carried out on the long and short terms which will further strengthen the bond between the Italian Nautical Industry Confederation and the Società velica di Barcola e Grignano. The agreement also contains many initiatives among which promotional activities between Genoa International Boat Show and the Autumn’s Cup Barcolana. The activities planned aim at promoting the two events in order to increase the interest of about 20 thousand sailors involved in each event.

“The project signed with the Società velica di Barcola e Grignano - said Anton Francesco Albertoni, President of UCINA Confindustria Nautica – is a sound initiative able to awaken the passion for yachting and in particular the love for sailing”. “The Società Velica di Barcola and Grignano – declared president Vincenzo Spina – is proud that UCINA has acknowledged that Barcolana is an event of excellence in the promotion of seafaring culture and passion for sailing; we work all year round to set up the Barcolana and this partnership gives us further motivation to continue developing our event and involve an even greater public, attracting more tourists and young people”.
