Whether you are a native or an immigrant, being a citizen of New York is to be objective and focused. No one has time to waste because here, time is money in the literal sense of the phrase. Even so, New York residents are not inhumane despite the city´s characteristics‌and this is where you find the balance. Ask for something or for guidance to a New Yorker and you will understand what I mean.

“I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York's skyline. Particularly when one can't see the details. Just the shapes. The shapes and the thought that made them. The sky over New York and the will of man made visible. What other religion do we need? And then people tell me about pilgrimages to some dank pesthole in a jungle where they go to do homage to a crumbling temple, to a leering stone monster with a pot belly, created by some leprous savage. Is it beauty and genius they want to see? Do they seek a sense of the sublime? Let them come to New York, stand on the shore of the Hudson, look and kneel. When I see the city from my window - no, I don't feel how small I am - but I feel that if a war came to threaten this, I would throw myself into space, over the city, and protect these buildings with my body.

Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead

“Yet, as only New Yorkers know, if you can get through the twilight, you’ll live through the night.”

Dorothy Parker

014

“If London is a watercolor, New York is an oil painting.”

Peter Shaffer

018

“There is no question that there is an unseen world. The problem is, how far is it from midtown and how late is it open?

Woody Allen

020

“A middle finger is more New York than a corporate ambush. I bleed for my hometown, and I’d die for my fans.”

Lady Gaga

024

“New York was a city where you could be frozen to death in the midst of a busy street and nobody would notice.

Bob Dylan, Chronicles, Volume One

026

“I once started out to walk around the world but ended up in Brooklyn, that Bridge was too much for me.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, A Coney Island of the Mind

028

“Practically everybody in New York has half a mind to write a book -and does.”

Groucho Marx

030

“I carry the place around the world in my heart but sometimes I try to shake it off in my dreams.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald

034

“I know where a lot of them [the elite or elitists] live. Where’s that? Well, in our nation’s capital and New York City. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived there.”

John McCain

036

“New York is a different country. Maybe it ought to have a separate government. Everybody thinks differently, they just don’t know what the hell the rest of the United States is.”

Henry Ford

040

“No place epitomizes the American experience and the American spirit more than New York City.

Michael R. Bloomberg

042

“New York, like London, seems to be a cloacina [toilet] of all the depravities of human nature.

Thomas Jefferson

044

“In New York City real estate parlors took your money and lied to you, drug addicts relieved themselves in plain sight, and the Public Library was closed on Mondays.

Tom Hanks, Uncommon Type: Some Stories

046

“You don’t come to live here unless the delusion of a reality shaped around your own desires isn’t a strong aspect of your personality. ‘A reality shaped around your own desires’ — there is something sociopathic in that ambition.”

Zadie Smith

050

“If everyone in New York took sides over these petty, insignificant arguments, no one would have any friends at all.

Candace Bushnell, One Fifth Avenue

“New York, you are an Egypt! But an Egypt turned inside out. For she erected pyramids of slavery to death, and you erect pyramids of democracy with the vertical organ-pipes of your skyscrapers all meeting at the point of infinity of liberty!”

Salvador Dalí

060

“I regret profoundly that I was not an American and not born in Greenwich Village. It might be dying, and there might be a lot of dirt in the air you breathe, but this is where it’s happening.”

John Lennon

062

“I believe in New Yorkers. Whether they’ve ever questioned the dream in which they live, I wouldn’t know, because I won’t ever dare ask that question.”

Dylan Thomas

“I often say that NY has lived in me long before I ever lived in NY. The symbolism of the city has inhabited my inconscient from day one ... I well remember the first time I set foot in Manhattan; the city did not meet my expectations, it surpassed all of them. The energy that pulsates in these streets is not something easy to explain ... It has to be witnessed, felt, lived. 064

No one is born, grows up, reproduces, and dies here. Everyone comes from somewhere, has a plan, carries a dream and shares a story. The Capital of the World is a magnet for interested and interesting people. It tests you at first, but once it’s holding you, life is split between before and after the Big Apple.

Pedro Andrade

066
