Hi Everyone! Thank you to all of you who attended our Local Offer Live event on Saturday 1st April. As you will see from the front page, we had a visit from our mascot, Arty, the Italian Spinone who is a trained Pet as Therapy dog. As you will see from the picture on the front page, Arty was rather exhausted by the end of the day after being much loved by children and adults alike. I am sure you are all looking forward to a well-deserved break over the Easter holidays and as the sun is shining as I write this, spring is definitely in the air! March was a busy month for us. Our Home Education and SEN workshop was very well attended and we are planning a follow up event in June. We also have our Health Workshop taking place Friday 5th May and our Coffee Morning on Tuesday 16th May. You may remember that we conducted a survey about our newsletter earlier this year. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, however, we have received feedback from parents and professionals saying that it is sometimes an information overload. With this in mind, we are planning a lighter version of the newsletter and include links to our new website: http://www.portsmouthparentvoice.org/ It is still working progress but Alison and I will be busy updating and uploading information over the Easter holidays. You might have also noticed that we have a new logo! Wishing you all a very happy Easter and thank you for your continuous support. See you soon! Appreciation Awards The Appreciation Award was created by the Co-production Group (or CoPro) in order to celebrate and recognise professionals who have helped parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disability. We are in the process of setting up a web page on our website to make it easier for you to nominate a professional who has helped you and your child/ young person. We often receive more complaints than compliments so it is important to recognise that there are individuals who are committed to make a difference to parent carers and their families. Maybe by highligting good practice in the city, we will be able to change the way services are delivered to you and benefitting other families in the same situation. So go on, get nominating!

Our latest awards go to: Sue Thomas, Mrs Duffle, Mrs Warren and Mrs Shiers from Portsdown DAU Mrs McDonald from Fernhurst Junior School

If you would like to nominate an individual who has made a difference for your child, young person or family, please contact Kara Jewell: engagementofficer@pd-f.org.uk

Celebra Template Letters We’ve created a series of template letters to help families write to their local council or health body about one of the problems listed below. These letters can be used by parents living in England and Wales, unless the letter’s heading says otherwise. These are general template letters and they may not suit your specific situation. If you need more help, contact our Legal Entitlements and Problem-Solving (LEaP) Project or read our Parent Guide on Finding and Assessing Sources of Legal Help.              

We want to make a complaint about social services Council and/or health officials are arguing about who’s responsible for helping us We want something confirmed in writing The council/health body has said ‘we don’t / can’t do that’ We haven’t had an answer to our first letter The council is blaming a lack of resources We’re still waiting for the council to arrange the support we need The council has put us in an ‘impossible position’ We want to see the personal information that the council / health body holds about us We want to ask for information under the Freedom of Information Act We want to request an assessment of our family’s needs The council still hasn’t completed our assessment or provided any interim support The council says that our child isn’t ‘eligible’ for support The council wants to reduce our child’s package of care

A message from John Attrill about Autism and Employment As the Learning Disability Champion's role does include to contribute to the development of services and support for people who do not quite meet the learning disability support service criteria, I would be most grateful if as many people as possible would forward me case studies about problems that people with Autism face trying to gain employment. I need this information to give me ammunition to get funding to extend the 'In to work' service of the YOU trust in the area of Autism. Always trying to be of assistance. Does your family use services for deaf/hearing impaired children? Could you spare a couple of hours each term? The National Deaf Children’s Society are supporting Portsmouth Children’s Hearing Services Working Groups (CHSWG) to find some Parent Representatives for the group. As a parent representative your role would be to liaise with the group and voice the opinions of what families with deaf children need and want, to help the services we have in the Portsmouth area make a difference. The Portsmouth CHSWG is a working group which includes health, education, voluntary sector and parent representatives and the meetings are held termly during the day. If you are interested in sharing your views and feedback, and those of other families with deaf children in your area then please contact us as we would really value your support. Please email Carla.rose-hardman@ndcs.org.uk for more details about this role or contact Carla on 01234 709979.
