Band Saws And How They Are Being Used Cutting through tough materials is usually completed with a power tool called a band saw. A topnotch band saw blade will sink through wood or metal the way a warm knife will sink through butter, without even the slightest of distortion that the cut butter would suffer. Band saws have even been mentioned in literary pieces like Neal Stephensons book called Cryptonomicon, where a character Bobby Shaftoe recalled working with a band saw in shop class. He could always feel the resistance of the material he was cutting no matter what saw he was working with and noticed when the saw would start to overheat. That is, until eventually he tried the band saw. This large machine (it was before World War II, so the thing was enormous) allowed him to cut through whatever he wanted, as fast as he wanted. Although metal band saw blades can still overheat, this isn’t a serious problem until they become dull. In addition, many band saws provide a cooling structure that allows the blades to chop through steel without causing either the steel or the blades to become extremely hot. When working with metals and wood, the band saws will be different along with the blades. Metalworking band saws run at much slower speeds than woodworking band saws, and the blades suitable for each material have different tooth designs. The shape of the blade also depends on the size of the material you are cutting. The material you are sawing should have between two and ten of the blade's teeth contacting the material at any time. Additionally, it is important to note that blades intended for wood should not be used to cut metal. The high speeds of wood cutting band saws will cause the blade to overheat and be ruined. Nevertheless, there are some multi-purpose band saws that offer a wide range of speeds. The slower speeds are intended for metal cutting, although, depending on the saw, you may want to stick to softer metals like copper and brass and steer clear of steel. While a multi-purpose saw can be used for metals, be sure the blade is appropriate which means never using a wood blade for cutting metal and a lubricant may be needed. If you are using a lubricant, don’t forget to clean up the saw prior to switch it back to cutting wood. Excess oil could put ugly splotches on your fine woodwork. For band saws and their use, safety is a major concern. Band saws will often be considered quite dangerous. While they could lead to injuries they are in fact one of the safer types of saws. Be sure to under no circumstances cut with a blade that is dull. When metal band saw blades show signs of wear and tear, they need to be discarded. A blade that has been made dull can be dangerous and unpredictable. The irregularity of the blade could cause the material you are working on to jerk forward and hands in the area could become pulled into the blade's direction, causing serious injuries. A blade should be changed whenever it has reached its prime and you will have to choose a band saw blade suitable to what you are working with. Alloy Steel backing will be in place on some styles of blades to allow for a more fatigue resistant blade. Carbon tool steel or carbide-tipped blades are appropriate for woodworking, and bi-metal or carbon tool steel blades are highly recommended for metal cutting. Up to ten times tougher, bi-metal blades are appropriate for hard metals, where carbon blades wouldn't work effectively. The blade's resilience can also be enhanced with a certain amount of cobalt content.
