LA TERRE DE WITT

En 1628, le capitaine hollandais Gerrit Fredrikszoon de Witt
s’échoue près de l’actuel Port Hedland, dans le nord-ouest de l’Australie. Il parvient à remettre son navire à flot en déchargeant sa cargaison, avant d’aller cartographier des sections
de côte jusqu’aux îles Montebello. Dès lors, l’ensemble des
surfaces littorales s’étendant d’Exmouth au nord-est du golfe Joseph-Bonaparte sera appelé « terre de Witt ». Après un
premier passage en 1801, Nicolas Baudin reviendra en 1803 explorer cette étendue. Il remontera cette côte à la naviga-
tion difficile, prélevant sur son trajet une grande variété
In 1628, a Dutchman, Captain Gerrit Fredrikszoon de Witt, ran aground close to today’s Port Hedland (northwest of Australia). By offloading cargo, he floated his vessel free, before charting sections of the coast down to the Montebello Islands. This coast from Exmouth to northeast of Joseph Bonaparte Gulf was then called ‘De Witt’s Land’. After his first visit in 1801, Nicolas Baudin returned in 1803 to explore this region more thoroughly. He sailed northwards along this hazardous coast, collecting many marine species, before setting sail for France via Timor and Mauritius. The expedition left behind many French names in this area.
