REPORT 2024 2025

is to inspire philanthropy and build extraordinary donor relationships in support of excellence, innovation, community wellness and global leadership in healthcare at Baptist Health, a not-for-profit organization supported by philanthropy and committed to our faith-based charitable mission of medical excellence.

ALEX VILLOCH CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
BAPTIST HEALTH FOUNDATION

MICHAEL L. KATZ BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR
BAPTIST HEALTH FOUNDATION
This past year was truly extraordinary. Together, we not only achieved another record-breaking fundraising year and disbursed the highest amount ever back into our institutes and hospitals, but also launched the most ambitious effort in Baptist Health Foundation’s history: Power Extraordinary — a $600 million campaign to transform healthcare in South Florida and beyond.
The $84 million raised through your generosity and $57 million invested back into our entities last year demonstrates the extraordinary scale at which philanthropy supports growth, innovation and excellence across Baptist Health.
Because of you, we were able to impact clinical trials and breakthrough research, enhance breast care and access for our patients and see the meaningful impact of our endowed chairs in action. We were able to Bounce Back from CancerTM alongside patients like Courtney De Stefano, support specialized fellowship programs, provide invaluable care to cancer patients and much more. Each of these achievements reflects the power of generosity — turning your support into impact, progress and hope for patients and their families.
The launch of Power Extraordinary marks a defining moment for our organization. Philanthropy is powering a transformation in healthcare, both in our community and on a global scale. It fuels groundbreaking research, attracts the best minds in medicine, sparks innovation and ensures patients have access to world-class care right here at home.
Your partnership is driving this vision forward. With your continued support, we will meet the evolving needs of today while building the future of medicine for generations to come.
Thank you for your commitment to “Power Extraordinary” care at Baptist Health.

Last year, we launched the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center Brick Campaign with overwhelming support from Baptist Health employees. With more than $111,000 raised last year, the support shown by our employees reflects their commitment to our mission and their extraordinary generosity.
Employees have chosen to engrave heartfelt messages on their bricks, offering hope to patients, honoring loved ones and showing solidarity with colleagues affected by cancer. Many departments within Baptist Health also joined together to purchase bricks in honor of teammates who have been impacted by cancer.
These bricks will line a walking path next to the new Women’s Cancer Center, where patients, families and staff can feel the strength of our community’s compassion.
More than $15 million raised by Corporate Philanthropy Partners in support of Baptist Health

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, breast care at Baptist Health is evolving in ways that directly impact patients and advance research.

Yolcar Chamorro, a Miami Cancer Institute research associate supported by philanthropy, is helping contribute to several initiatives.
“Thanks to donor support, I can bring my ideas, skills and passion into our breast cancer research team,” Yolcar shares. “Donor support lets me focus on meaningful studies, contribute to innovative projects and expand clinical trial access for patients across South Florida. Our donors don’t just fund science, they fund the people who make science accessible, equitable and impactful.”
Yolcar’s work spans several critical areas, including understanding disparities that contribute to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in breast cancer clinical trials. She is currently working on a study that explores how to integrate a patient-centered exercise program for breast cancer patients undergoing chemoimmunotherapy.
In Plantation, philanthropic support enabled the addition of a Breast Care Coach, guiding patients from the moment a biopsy is recommended through scheduling, medical clearance and results, while helping them transition smoothly to the surgical team as needed.
“Thanks to Baptist Health Foundation support, we are now able to offer the same level of guidance and support to patients in Plantation as we provide at Miami Cancer Institute,” says Naydel Espinal, manager of Imaging Services.

Donor support also enabled the implementation of the 3Dimensions imaging system at Bethesda Hospital, which streamlines procedures, speeds targeting and improves image quality, all while reducing radiation exposure and minimizing procedure time for high-risk patients.
From groundbreaking research to personalized guidance and cutting-edge technology, philanthropy directly supports Baptist Health’s commitment to innovation and patient-centered care.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Baptist Health Foundation held its Annual Pink Pineapple Luncheon on October 24, 2024, at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The luncheon, also hosted by philanthropic chairs Joyce and Tony Esernia, was attended by more than 160 donors and community members who enjoyed an afternoon of empowerment, education, celebration and connection. Sponsored by the Miami HEAT, the event raised more than $70,000 to benefit Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.

In November 2023, 32-year-old Courtney De Stefano received a life-changing diagnosis: vaginal cancer. Concerned about her fertility, she turned to John Diaz, M.D., chief of gynecologic oncology, director of robotic surgery and director of clinical research in gynecologic oncology at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Diaz suggested uterine transposition, a rare, robotic-assisted procedure, to protect her uterus and ovaries.
“Courtney’s case required careful coordination and innovative thinking,” says Dr. Diaz. “Our goal was to provide the best chance for her treatment while preserving her ability to have children in the future.”
Under his guidance, Courtney had her tumor removed and was placed in temporary menopause. In February 2024, she had surgery to relocate her uterus, allowing her to safely complete radiation and chemotherapy. She had a second surgery in July to return her uterus to its original position.
“Dr. Diaz and his team made me feel supported and cared for every step of the way,” she says. “This experience has made me appreciate every moment even more.”
On March 15, 2025, Courtney joined more than 1,750 participants in our annual grassroots fundraiser, Bounce Back from Cancer TM —
a partnership between Baptist Health Foundation and the Miami HEAT. In its sixth year, the event brought the community together to dribble basketballs through the streets of Miami and raised more than $5 million to fund groundbreaking cancer research and clinical trials at Miami Cancer Institute.
“I had seen things about Bounce Back. I was just so excited, I got a huge group of friends to walk the whole thing with me,” says Courtney.
It was a triumphant and inspiring day for her as she completed the 14.2-mile walk from Miami Cancer Institute to the Kaseya Center, with Dr. Diaz by her side. “Six months ago, I could barely get out of bed. I had no energy. So to be able to walk 14 miles alongside my oncologist is the best feeling in the world,” she says.
Stories like Courtney’s are a powerful reminder of why Baptist Health Foundation created Bounce Back from CancerTM and why raising critical funds for research and innovation is so important. Every dollar helps Miami Cancer Institute continue to drive breakthroughs and provide patients with hope for a healthier future.

“ Six months ago, I could barely get out of bed. I had no energy. So to be able to walk 14 miles alongside my oncologist is the best feeling in the world.”

In addition to advancing neuroscience, the family’s generosity included a $1 million gift to
Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, a place that holds deep personal meaning for them, in support of the hospital’s clinical expansion. Their investment reflects both gratitude and belief in Baptist Health’s mission to deliver world-class care close to home.
As South Miami-Dade continues to grow, Baptist Health is investing more than $200 million to expand services and bring advanced care closer to home.
At the center of this vision is Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, which operates beyond capacity as demand for care rises. To support its expansion, Baptist Health Foundation has launched a $25 million campaign to help fund a new four-story, 134,000-square-foot tower with 90 new inpatient beds and expanded facilities. Philanthropy will be the driving force in meeting the healthcare needs of this rapidly growing community.
Since 1986, the Lake Pavilion at Baptist Health Baptist Hospital has been home to Women’s Health Services and Neonatal Care, welcoming nearly 4,000 newborns each year. Today, Baptist Health is embarking on a transformational renovation and modernization of the Lake Pavilion to reflect the same level of excellence as the care delivered within its walls.
To bring this vision to life, Baptist Health Foundation aims to raise $50 million to help renovate the neonatal intensive care unit, modernize birthing suites and patient rooms, upgrade technology and operating rooms and expand maternal care programs.

Longtime supporters Jim Rifkin and Jane Packard deepened their legacy of giving to Baptist Health Foundation with a $6.6 million planned gift in support of Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. Their gift will be used to accelerate programmatic development at Miami Neuroscience Institute to improve, treat or cure neurological
diseases, with an initial focus on movement disorders and dementia.
Their longstanding and meaningful partnership continues to drive innovation at Baptist Health, supporting the work of leading physicians and advancing healthcare for our patients.
With the support of our donors, the Patient Navigation Program at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute provides cancer patients with personalized guidance, resources and compassionate care throughout treatment. Our nurse and patient navigators walk alongside patients and their families, helping them understand their diagnosis, coordinate complex care and access vital resources. They also assist with practical challenges such as transportation, finances or childcare, so patients can focus on healing. Through the generosity of our donors, the Patient Navigation Program helps patients and families facing cancer receive the care, support and guidance they need.

Infants who receive human milk experience stronger health outcomes and fewer infections, which provides them a healthier start in life. At Baptist Health South Miami Hospital, the Donor Breast Milk Program provided more than 17,000 ounces of donor milk in 2025, helping nourish newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit and bringing comfort to their families. Thanks to philanthropy, the program was fully funded last year, ensuring every baby in need had access to this essential source of nourishment and care.

At Baptist Health, endowed chairs shape the future of medicine while creating meaningful impact today.

Ronald B. Tolchin, D.O., chair of nonsurgical spine care and rehabilitation at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute and the Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Pain & Rehabilitative Medicine, used funds from his chair to send eight medical
students from Florida
International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to a national physical medicine and rehabilitation conference, where they presented research and case reports developed under his mentorship. Each student received support for travel and registration, gaining hands-on learning, professional connections and real-world experience. Their participation reflects Baptist Health’s commitment to preparing and inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders.
Endowed chair support also drives groundbreaking research. Funds from the Irma & Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience, held by Michael McDermott, M.D., chief medical executive at the Institute and chair of FIU’s department of neurosciences, established the Irma & Kalman Bass Basic Science Research Award. The $50,000 award is funding a study exploring

a new compound that may reduce amyloid buildup associated with Alzheimer’s disease, helping researchers better understand memory impact and evaluate safety — a key step toward future breakthroughs.
Endowed chairs at Baptist Health support innovative research, create educational opportunities and strengthen collaboration with FIU, all while helping train the next generation of medical professionals.
Michael J. Zinner, M.D., founding CEO and executive medical director of Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute and professor in the Department of Surgery at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, passed away in October 2025 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Zinner’s vision and leadership were instrumental in creating the Miami Cancer Institute we know today — a destination cancer center that ensures no one has to leave South Florida to receive worldclass, compassionate treatment. Through his dedication and leadership, he united brilliant minds, championed cuttingedge research and changed the course of cancer care in South Florida forever.
Beyond his extraordinary clinical and administrative leadership, Dr. Zinner had a
remarkable gift for bringing people together around a shared purpose. His personal relationships and tireless advocacy helped inspire generous support for cancer programs that have transformed care in our community. The Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center, along with other pioneering initiatives, stand as living testaments to his vision and his ability to turn bold ideas into reality.
Before his passing, Dr. Zinner was installed as the Michael J. Zinner, M.D., Endowed Chair in Cancer Care at Miami Cancer Institute and Baptist Health Cancer Care. The endowed chair bearing his name stands as a lasting tribute to his vision, leadership and commitment to advancing cancer care for our community.
On behalf of Baptist Health Foundation, we extend our most heartfelt thank you to all

who have joined us in honoring Dr. Zinner’s extraordinary life and legacy. Together, we will continue to advance cancer care and innovation through philanthropy for the patients and families who depend on us, carrying forward the mission he so passionately led.
Philanthropy is paving the way for the future of care at Baptist Health. Through the generosity of our donors, two transformative projects are already taking shape — the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center and the Kenneth C. Griffin Center at Miami Neuroscience Institute.
Donor generosity is fueling real-time milestones for these projects — bringing together vision, design and
expertise to create spaces that will redefine how we deliver extraordinary care. By supporting architectural and construction costs, our donors are driving progress and ensuring every aspect of the structures supports our mission to deliver advanced, innovative and patientcentered treatment.
Through philanthropy, Baptist Health is taking critical steps toward a new era of care in both women’s cancer and
neuroscience. The early investment by our donors is enabling the recruitment of top physicians, guiding the integration of cutting-edge technology and shaping spaces that put patients and their families at the center of everything we do.
While the immediate impact of philanthropy can be seen in the work currently underway, its true reach extends far beyond construction, as it sets the stage for all that lies ahead.

The early investment by our donors is enabling the recruitment of top physicians, guiding the integration of cutting-edge technology and shaping spaces that put patients and their families at the center of everything we do.
Through specialized fellowship programs and meaningful partnerships with our donors, Baptist Health is nurturing talent and advancing a shared commitment to education, helping develop some of the best minds in medicine.
One example is the Malignant Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) APP Fellowship at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. This comprehensive, one-year program equips advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, with the knowledge and skills to excel in hematology and oncology. Supported by donors to Baptist Health Foundation, Fellows receive a blend of clinical training, classroom education and research opportunities, with a focus on managing

hematologic malignancies and the complexities of BMT. The program is the first nationally certified malignant hematology and BMT fellowship with distinction in its field.
Donor generosity is also impacting the Oral Oncology Fellowship Program at Miami Cancer Institute. During the year-long fellowship, dentists train to become experts in oral oncology and gain the skills to care for patients with cancer through hands-on clinical experience, education and mentorship. Fellows learn to evaluate, diagnose and manage oral diseases, enhancing the quality of care patients receive during their cancer journey.
At Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute, the Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship offers comprehensive surgical training in treating arthritic conditions of the hip and knee. Fellows gain experience with procedures ranging from primary and revision joint replacements to custom implants and robotics, with a focus on advanced techniques such as the direct anterior approach to hip replacement. They also have opportunities to engage in investigator-initiated clinical studies to further advance orthopedic research.
With the support of our donors, these fellows gain hands-on experience and access to cutting-edge research, helping prepare the next generation of medical professionals.

For Filipe Kunzler de Oliveira Maia, M.D., every step of his journey at Baptist Health has been made possible through philanthropy. What began as a volunteer research opportunity evolved into a career rooted in compassion, discovery and gratitude thanks to Baptist Health Foundation donors.
When Dr. Kunzler arrived at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute in 2018, he was a trained general surgeon from Brazil seeking to continue his education. Although he had completed surgical training abroad, he needed a U.S.-
accredited surgical residency to practice in the United States. He pursued research and clinical fellowships at Miami Cancer Institute, which became essential stepping stones in his journey.
His path toward surgical residency formally began in 2020, when he was appointed the Nahmad Research Fellow, a research-focused fellowship established through the generosity of Al and Jane Nahmad. This allowed him to deepen his clinical experience and build the foundation for the next stage of training. Under the mentorship of Horacio Asbun, M.D., chief of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, Dr. Kunzler transitioned into the department’s first clinical fellowship in 2021 — another opportunity made possible through philanthropy. In this role, he refined his skills and contributed to the Institute’s academic and clinical work.
As his training progressed, Dr. Kunzler continued to develop as both a clinician
and researcher, participating in donor-supported projects, including a clinical trial exploring ways to preserve spleen function after pancreatic surgery.
When the Florida International University/Baptist Health General Surgery Residency launched, advocates within Baptist Health recommended he join as a third-year resident in 2025, recognizing his advanced experience and contributions. His dedication also led to his appointment as vice chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the Institute, a role he still holds while rotating across Baptist Health hospitals as a surgical resident. “I love this place. I would do anything for anyone here. The Foundation and its donors are the reason I was able to stay, learn and grow. No other institution would have given me these opportunities.”
Philanthropy didn’t just shape Dr. Kunzler’s path — it built it. From research to residency, donor generosity has supported him every step of the way.

Baptist Health has been more than a healthcare provider for Alejandra Rudner and her family, it has been part of their village since the day her first child was born.
When Alejandra was just 30 weeks pregnant with her first daughter, Amelia, she developed severe preeclampsia and delivered on Christmas Eve. Amelia spent 21 days in the Baptist Health Baptist Hospital neonatal intensive care unit, where the team helped Alejandra and her husband, Daniel, navigate the early days of parenthood.
Three years later, Alejandra developed preeclampsia again with her second daughter, Camille, who arrived at 31 weeks with critical complications. She faced lung collapse, apnea and severe gastrointestinal challenges, spending 56 days in and out of the hospital.
Both girls were referred to the Baptist Health South Miami Hospital’s Child Development Center (CDC), where years of therapy shaped their growth and resilience. The CDC and Baptist Health became an extension of Alejandra’s family. “For us, therapy is just a part of life,” she shares. “We brush our teeth and we go to therapy.”
Amelia overcame early feeding issues and today is a black belt in Taekwondo. Camille, who once faced 19 food allergies and significant orthopedic challenges, recently graduated from physical therapy after seven years of care.
Alejandra was not aware that many of the services her daughters relied on were supported by philanthropy until her father-in-law informed her about Baptist Health Foundation. Inspired by the generosity that made their care possible, she and her husband chose to give back so that other families could receive the same life-changing support. “It’s one of the places where you can see where your donation is going — the fruits of your gift. You can see it in person. It feels good to see and witness your gift,” she says.
Grateful for the care and support her family received, Alejandra would encourage any family considering the CDC to take advantage of its programs stating, “Don’t think twice. They will love your child and pour into your child when you can’t because of lack of time or lack of knowledge or lack of ability. They educate you and really just give your child what you cannot — they know how to, and want to.”

George Fernandez, a longtime Key West resident, gave $1 million to Baptist Health Foundation to support Baptist Health Cancer Care Key West — funding facilities, equipment, programs and other cancer care resources.
He was moved to give after seeing the only local cancer provider leave Key West, forcing a close friend to seek treatment elsewhere before losing
his battle with cancer. George was inspired by Baptist Health’s commitment to expanding care in the Keys, including opening a center providing chemotherapy and radiation oncology.
“This mission is personal to me,” said George. “Like many, we’ve experienced the problems our friends and loved ones in need of cancer care have encountered in our community. I felt that this gift would be the best way to give back to the Key West community, the place that — as the self-appointed goodwill ambassador for the past 32 years — I’m very proud to call my forever home.”

George’s generosity reflects Baptist Health’s commitment to continue bringing cancer care closer to patients. Thanks to philanthropic support, Baptist Health Cancer Care has already expanded to Baptist Health Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon, Baptist Health Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and Baptist Health Homestead Hospital in Homestead — and now, thanks to donors like George, Key West is next.
Philanthropy has provided much of the medical equipment, operational support and resources needed to

It is through the generosity of donors like George that critical care is now, and will be, within reach for so many South Florida residents.

In 2025, at just six months old, Remington Still was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma — a rare eye cancer that affects only 200 to 300 children in the U.S. each year, with about one in four cases affecting both eyes. Because Remington’s mother lost one eye to the same disease as a child, he was screened early, allowing for a timely diagnosis and treatment plan.
“Retinoblastoma causes lesions, or tumors, to develop,” says Doured Daghistani, M.D., pediatric oncologist/ hematologist at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. “We use chemotherapy to shrink the lesions and to prevent them from metastasizing to another area, and we can use local treatments like lasers to destroy the cancer cells.”
Remington’s care team, including Dr. Daghistani and
Timothy Murray, M.D., a comprehensive ophthalmologist at Miami Cancer Institute, developed a plan combining chemotherapy and laser therapy to preserve his vision. “Treatment aims not only to save the child’s life and eyes, but to protect their sight as well,” says Dr. Daghistani. “As soon as you find the tumor and zap it, that’s the end of it.”
Thanks to this early and targeted care, Remington’s vision remains strong, and his future is bright.
Providing this level of care for pediatric patients at Baptist Health is made possible in part by the generosity of Baptist Health Foundation donors. Their support allows us to invest in advanced tools like the Iridex Laser Indirect Ophthalmoscope, a highly specialized device that enables physicians to accurately target
retinoblastoma in babies under a year old while protecting surrounding healthy tissue. With this technology, our youngest patients receive the most precise, state-of-the-art care available, improving their chances of preserving vision while delivering life saving treatment.
For families facing the uncertainty of a rare pediatric cancer, having access to the latest medical tools makes a meaningful difference. Donorfunded equipment like the Iridex Laser ensures babies at Baptist Health receive the best possible treatment.
Through philanthropic support, Baptist Health Foundation donors are helping enhance treatment capabilities, improve outcomes and ensure every baby and child diagnosed with retinoblastoma receives the highest standard of care.

Research advancements at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute are changing how complex cancer therapies are delivered, allowing patients to receive cutting-edge treatment while spending less time in the hospital and more time at home.
The OUTREACH study treated more than 82 patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer affecting the immune system’s B-cells. CAR T-cell therapy is an advanced treatment that uses a patient’s own immune cells, which are

modified in the lab to better recognize and attack cancer cells. About 70 percent of patients received therapy as outpatients and 25 percent never required hospitalization.
“OUTREACH is, to our knowledge, the first and largest prospective clinical trial of its kind,” says Yuliya Linhares, M.D., chief of Lymphoma Services at Miami Cancer Institute. “For appropriate patients, liso-cel is safe and feasible when delivered on an outpatient basis by a highly trained team.”
Generous support from Baptist Health Foundation donors was essential in supporting the OUTREACH study. Philanthropy helped cover lab expenses and treatment-related infusions, enabling patients to safely receive this advanced therapy without extended hospital stays. Their generosity is driving breakthroughs that advance research and transform patient care.
According to Dr. Linhares, new technologies, techniques and medications are helping prolong remission and overcome resistance mechanisms as blood cancer care continues to evolve. By making advanced therapies available through outpatient services, patients gain easier access to life-changing treatment — an impact made possible by donor support.
Bethesda Hospital’s Healing Through Music program, made possible by Impact 100 Palm Beach County, brings the power of live music directly to patients’ bedsides.
The arts have a profound role in healthcare — supporting emotional wellbeing, promoting recovery and creating a warm environment for patients, families and medical staff. This belief is reflected across Baptist Health.
The Arts in Medicine program at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute facilitated 53,470 patient interactions last year, offering moments of comfort, connection and calm during the cancer journey.
Likewise, Bethesda Hospital’s Healing Through Music program leaves a lasting impact on everyone, including Patient Experience Manager Vickie Raptis. “I can attest firsthand that music has the power to heal, transform and inspire. It brings joy and releases suffering for patients, their loved ones and employees. Sometimes music is the medicine our heart and soul needs!”
Philanthropy brought this program to life, and with ongoing support, it will reach even more patients, demonstrating how donor generosity allows Baptist Health to elevate patient care by blending clinical excellence, compassion and the healing power of the arts.
