Labour urged to end ‘racist’ block on white police recruits

Desk report:

Yvette Cooper has been urged to end a “racist” block on white applicants from becoming police officers.

The Home Secretary must take action against West Yorkshire Police or risk Britain becoming divided by membership of “favoured ethnic groups”, Tory and Reform MPs said.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday that the force has temporarily blocked applications from white British candidates for its police constable entry programmes in an attempt to boost diversity.

“Under-represented” groups can lodge their applications early, leading to concerns that white British candidates are being unfairly treated, amounting to a form of positive discrimination that could be potentially unlawful.

Richard Tice, the Reform UK deputy leader, said:

“Once again we see another example of two-tier Britain.

“It’s disgraceful that West Yorkshire Police are treating white applicants as secondclass citizens.

“The Home Secretary needs to urgently step in and put a stop to this. Reform UK are the only party promising to ban Diversity, Equality and Inclusion and return the

country back to merit-based employment.”

West Yorkshire Police has said its policy is to ensure that “diverse communities” are represented by the officers serving them. But former officers have accused it of effectively running a “hidden” recruitment policy

that targets certain groups. ‘Gold, silver and bronze rankings’

One whistleblower claimed black and far east Asian candidates were considered particularly underrepresented and given a “gold” ranking, followed by those of south-east Asian

origin who were in the silver tier. “White others”, including candidates from Irish and eastern European backgrounds, were bronze.

Neil O’Brien, a Tory frontbencher, said: “These revelations about appalling racist hiring policies at West Yorkshire police are shocking.

“For the police to be dividing different ethnic groups into gold, silver and bronze categories is bizarre.

“We should be employing the best person for the job, not judging people solely on the colour of their skin.

“What is the Home Secretary going to do about this appalling example of two-tier Britain? Seemingly nothing so far, but she needs to step in.“We are sleepwalking into a Britain where people are not judged as individuals or on the content of their character, but solely judged by their membership of particularly favoured ethnic groups.”

Cabinet Office to ditch 2,100 civil servant jobs

Desk report:

A government department run by one of Sir Keir Starmer's most senior ministers is cutting almost a third of its jobs as ministers seek to accelerate civil service reform.

Officials at the Cabinet Office - headed by Pat McFadden - are being told today that 2,100 of their 6,500 jobs will be cut or moved to other parts of government over the next two years. Along with other reforms, the Cabinet Office says the cuts will save £110m a year by 2028.

The Cabinet Office supports the prime minister and coordinates the work of other departments which have more specific remits.

Civil service union Prospect warned "blunt cuts of this scale" could harm delivery across government.

Of the jobs to go, some 1,200 posts will be lost through voluntary and "mutuallyagreed" redundancies or people not being replaced if

they leave. A further 900 are being transferred to other government departments in an attempt to avoid duplication of work.

McFadden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, is one of Sir Keir Starmer's key lieutenants and the minister responsible for reform of the

civil service.

A source said he was "leading by example" with the cuts to his own department.

In recent weeks the government has announced plans to make "radical" reforms to the way the civil service works, including cutting the costs of running

government by 15% by the end of the decade.

McFadden wants to introduce performancerelated pay for senior staff and new rules under which those failing to meet standards could be sacked if they do not improve within six months.

But he has resisted, in public at least, setting a target for how many civil servants' jobs would be lost.

Today's announcement of the moves at the Cabinet Office suggests that the cuts might go further than some had expected. A Cabinet Office source told the BBC: "Leading by example, we are creating a leaner and more focused Cabinet Office that will drive work to reshape the state and deliver our Plan for Change.

"This government will target resources at frontline services - with more teachers in classrooms, extra hospital appointments and police back on the beat."

In a call with staff this morning Cat Little, the Cabinet Office's top civil servant, said she wanted the department to be "more strategic, specialist, and smaller".

It was right those Labour MPs went to Israel - and dead wrong they were turned away at the border

Rupa Huq:

It’s not every day you have an 18 year old army reservist poking a machine gun at you and barking orders — but it happened to me. My colleagues MPs Abtisam Mohamed and Yuan Yang being denied entry to Israel then booted back to Blighty brought back my brush at the same Ben Gurion airport, long before this present Gaza war.

As someone who has experienced similar I know it’s not a pleasant experience to be subjected to extra questioning then hauled aside. But at least it happened to me on the way out, not in. Given we are in the midst of a bloody war unfolding in real time there are wider implications too. The incident which happened to two young women has rightly outraged David Lammy.

Some asked what Mohamed and Yang were doing there anyway. The two MPs were part of a delegation to Palestine, where the West Bank population have no airport of their own — so that is the tried and tested route.

I remember the fact we were collected in a car with Israeli numberplates made easier our passage to Ramallah in area A of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (as designated by the Oslo accords) where we were staying. But it was still no tea party. We were subject to checkpoints. “They don’t

have freedom of movement” as another MP colleague on the cross-party delegation I served on observed.

We all live and breathe our constituency life but at the same time it’s good to get out. And with big topics important lawmakers can see the situation on the ground to know what it is they’re talking about. That applies in my case too, whether I’m visiting a housing estate on the A40 where a pipe hairline crack led to 400 residents being without water for 5 days, or HS2’s Old Oak Common site.

And while all politics, as the saying goes, is local, it is

increasingly true that MPs sit in our national Parliament elected by locals to pronounce on international issues. I used to try not to meddle in international matters, as they are way bigger than anything I as a backbencher can ever resolve.

When Narendra Modi came to address MPs in the same Westminster Hall dating to 1097, where Queen Elizabeth II laid in state, I had constituents emailing asking me to attend and heed the words of the largest democracy in the world’s heard of state and others telling me to stay away.

I opted out, not wanting to offend. With Gaza however unfolding in real time and the huge numbers who email MPs on the subject it’s impossible not to become dragged in.

Of course any country should welcome MPs whether they cheerlead the present regime or not. Israel, the much vaunted only democracy in the Middle East, appears to be behaving outside norms of normal democratic state if it doesn’t want anyone to see what goes on there. Journalists and all westerners have effectively been banned from Gaza for some time now.

Kemi Badenoch stirring to

make this a party political issue is deeply unbecoming and shows how unfit she is to lead her party. Substitute in the word “China” or “Russia” for Israel for turning away Tory MPs and would she be saying the same?

Yes countries do have the right to turn away terrorists and those whip up hatred but this was not Abtisam and Yuan who are the most mild mannered MPs I know. At least when I was due to be part of a trip with MPs in 2016 to India and a pro-Kashmir Tory MPs was shunned by the Indians it was at the visa granting stage not at the airport once we’d flown in. The whole trip was cancelled in solidarity.

Foreign travel in recess periods does make MPs better informed. As a postexpenses-scandal MP and given security threats I never post on social media when abroad. This trip in question cost the taxpayer nothing as it was funded by two charities. I was offered a place on it too but my 2017 experience — a barrage of extra questions then being made to step aside to another area of the airport where I was made to undress before being calmly pointed to the steps of my plane after getting flustered — has made me never return, which maybe was the aim.

King jokes about living ‘long enough’ to see sapling grow

The King began his final day of the state visit to Italy by planting a tree, joking that he hoped he would “live long enough” to see it grow.

The King waved his shovel in the air to celebrate planting the sapling in the gardens of Villa Wolkonsky, the British ambassador’s residence in Rome.

Turning to speak to members of the embassy who had gathered on the lawns, he quipped: “Well I do hope that I shall live long enough to see a little bit of growth in the tree.” The King, who is receiving treatment for cancer, then unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion, before pointing at the newly planted tree and saying: “Needs a bit of water.”

Later in the city of Ravenna he was greeted by crowds waving flags, and fans dressed in the colours of the Union Jack flag to welcome the Royal family.

Shops and cafes in the small city, near Bologna, closed to allow staff to see the King and Queen, who

are spending their final afternoon of the Italian state visit with them.

Some Italians waved flags, and others dressed in the flag colours of red, white and blue.

Liberation of Ravenna

The King and Queen are marking the 80th anniversary of Ravenna’s liberation in

the Second World War, and will join a food festival in the square. Both will view Dante’s tomb, before the King is shown 5th and 6th century mosaics at the Basilica of San Vitale and Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and the Queen will visit the Byron museum. Some Italians had travelled for an hour to get to the

small city, with the most enthusiastic waiting for up to seven hours to get the prime position.

One group of Italian ladies dressed in red and blue, wearing hats and fascinators and carrying Union flags with pictures of members of the Royal family. They described themselves as

Anglophiles and “huge fans” of the British royals.

Antique dealer, Chiara Simonini, said: “We love England, the Royal Family, we are huge fans. We love the history and their sense of duty.

“We have travelled to the United Kingdom several times to watch some of the events but the fact that King Charles is coming here to us now is magic.”

Giorgia Lucenti added: “It’s a gift for us. We thought it was wonderful that King Charles spoke in Italian in the parliament yesterday. It showed enormous respect. We would give him ten out of ten. He was perfect.”

Annarita Maserati had brought her 11-year-old daughter, Victoria, named after Queen Victoria.

“I met her father, who is also Italian, in London under the statue of Queen Victoria,” she said.

Birmingham Labour MP took luxury Japan trip during bin strike

A senior Labour MP has been accused of abandoning his constituents by taking a luxury trip to Japan during the Birmingham bin crisis. Liam Byrne, the MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill and Solihull North, flew to Tokyo with the House of Commons business committee two weeks after the strikes broke out. He is then thought to have extended his stay for a personal holiday last week, as Birmingham residents complained of rats as big as cats plaguing the city’s streets. Mr Byrne’s constituents are said to be some of the worst affected by the bin strikes, with mounds of waste piling up in the area.As chair of the business committee, the MP was also accused of being “missing in action” during the Donald Trump tariff drama, reportedly skipping several Commons hearings this week.It comes after The Telegraph revealed that spending by

MPs on overseas trips to exotic locations such as Bermuda and Rio de Janeiro soared in 2023-24, leaving taxpayers with a £1.4 million bill.Select committees are groups of backbench MPs who scrutinise government

departments on how successful they are at delivering their policies. It is normal for them to take trips abroad to carry out research for inquiries. However, critics have asked why they cannot speak to

representatives abroad via Zoom or even on the telephone, rather than spending so much on flights and hotels.

Mr Byrne flew to Japan with seven other MPs on the committee at the end

of last month, according to the Daily Mail. Birmingham bin workers walked out indefinitely on March 11 after striking intermittently across January and February, with some collections cancelled since Christmas.

On March 31, three days after Mr Byrne’s flight to Tokyo, the council was forced to declare a major incident as waste piled high in the streets.

The official reason for the Japan visit was to “understand international export markets and opportunities”, with a committee spokesman claiming it was linked to the MPs’ “current trade-focused inquiries”.

The MPs reportedly flew business class to Tokyo and stayed at the Hotel New Otani, a five-star establishment with 37 bars and restaurants and 33 banquet rooms.

Starmer faces grassroots rebellion over grooming gangs

Desk report::

Sir Keir Starmer is facing a grassroots rebellion over his refusal to launch a national inquiry into the grooming gangs scandal.

The Prime Minister has rejected demands to launch a statutory inquiry into the historical sexual abuse of thousands of children by gangs of men, predominantly of Pakistani heritage. On Thursday, Sir Keir denied that plans for up to five initial local inquiries had been scaled back after the Government said it would make the money available for councils but they could use it as they wished to tackle grooming.

But Blue Labour, a campaign group founded by the Labour peer Lord Glasman, said Sir Keir had not gone far enough and called on him to commit to a nationwide Government-backed inquiry.

The group said: “Blue Labour’s position on the grooming and rape gangs is unchanged. This is a national evil that requires a national response.

Local authorities lack the necessary capabilities and legal authority to carry out investigations, and often they are in need of investigation themselves.

“We need a national inquiry with full statutory powers.

The decades-long abuse of young girls and its coverup is a sickness that must be exorcised from the body politic.

“Labour is committed to reforming the state and its institutions, to restoring trust and consent in government, and to renewing the social covenant that binds us together. We can start the renewal here.” Lord Glasman told The Telegraph: “We call for an immediate national inquiry with full powers of arrest. This is an evil that has got to be seen to be public.”

Lord Glasman, a political theorist who first coined the term Blue Labour in 2009, is viewed as an important voice within Labour and has the ear of Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s chief of staff. He is said to have informed Mr McSweeney’s thinking on immigration and how Labour can appeal to disillusioned working-class voters who are minded to back Reform UK.

He has broken with the Government line on a number of issues, including the deal to hand the Chagos Islands over to Mauritius as well as the appointment of

After the last page

Lord Hermer as Attorney General.

Blue Labour is said to have a growing number of supporters on the Labour back benches. These are known to include Jonathan Hinder, the MP for the Red Wall constituency of Pendle and Clitheroe in Lancashire.

Other backers include Dan Carden, a former ally of Jeremy Corbyn, who in January broke ranks with Sir Keir to call for a full national inquiry into grooming gangs. The same call has been made by Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, and Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK. Sir Keir insisted in an interview with Sky News on Thursday that a full statutory inquiry was not needed amid renewed outrage over the approach taken by his administration.

“If there’s evidence of grooming, the first thing that should happen is the police should be involved, investigating and, if appropriate, prosecuting,” he said. “There have been a number of inquiries –we’ve had hundreds of recommendations. We’ve had a national inquiry with 22 recommendations.

“My strong belief is we’ve got to implement those recommendations. At the moment, and under the last government, they just stacked up and sat on a shelf so they need to be implemented.” Earlier this week, Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, told the Commons that the Government was shifting from backing five local inquiries to the tune of £5 million towards a “flexible

approach” that would allow the selected local authorities to spend the money as they saw fit.

‘Party political misinformation’ These remarks prompted the Tories to accuse Labour of weakening its response, not least because the announcement came less than an hour before Parliament rose for recess.

Katie Lam, a Home Office minister, asked Ms Phillips in response: “What does the Government intend to do about local leaders who say there is no need for an independent inquiry, as they do in Bradford and in Wales?” On Thursday, Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, dismissed the suggestion her department’s response had been watered down as “total nonsense”.

“There’s been a lot of misinformation, and sadly party political misinformation, being put out about this and it’s just fundamentally wrong,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“So not only are we continuing with the plans for local inquiries, as we set out in January, that has not changed. We’re also saying we will support areas that want to do more to work with victims and survivors. That has not changed.”

Rehana, Azmina, Bobby got Purbachal plots due to the tulip influence

Desk report::

Sheikh Rehana, her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and daughter Azmina Siddiq

got plots in Purbachal New Town without submitting any application due to the influence of British MP Tulip Siddiq, also a niece of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. They managed to get the plots from the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripokkha by using special power and influence of Tulip Siddiq on her maternal aunt the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina, according to the information revealed from three charge-sheets submitted against them.

The Investigation Officer of the cases, assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission Afnan Jannat Keya brought charges against 53 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, Tulip Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq.

The IO after submitting the charge sheets applied to the court for issuing arrest warrants against them and attaching their assets and properties. They court, however, fixed April 13 to accept the charge sheets and hear the petitions.

The IO in the charge sheet against Sheikh Rehana mentioned that she (Rehana) did not apply for getting allotment of plot in Rajuk’s prescribed form, so that it was not scrutinized by the appropriate authority. Her name was not enlisted in the registrar book of the Rajuk as it was not submitted at all, the IO said.

When Tulip Siddiq came to know that her aunt, the then prime minister, allotted a 10-katha plot for herself, her daughter Sayma Wajed and son Sajib Wazed Joy each, then she influenced and

pressured Sheikh Hasina to allot similar plots for her mother, brother and sister, the IO added.

The then prime minister Sheikh Hasina with an ulterior motive and misusing her power vested upon her allotted these plots violating sections 4 and 5 of the Rajuk rules, the IO added.

Similar violations were also made for allocation plots in favour of Azmina Siddiq and Radwan Mujib Siddiq. ACC deputy director Salauddin on January 13 filed a case against 15 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasian and her niece Tulip Siddiq. ACC AD Afnan Jannat Keya on March 10 submitted charge sheet to the court accusing 17 people in the case.

Similar allegations were also brought against Azmina Siddiq, Tulip Siddiq and Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby.

ACC public prosecutor

Mahmud Hossain Jahangir on Thursday told BSS that the ACC has already submitted separate charge sheets against Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and their family members for allotting 60 kathas of land in the diplomatic enclave of the Purbachal New Town project violating existing rules and through corruption.

The accused especially the family members of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana have been absconding so that the court will issue arrest warrants against them as per the law, the PP said, adding that the court will start trial against them after publishing gazette against the absconders.
