The Project 

The building is located 3 blocks from Guanabara Bay, one of the most beautiful sites in Rio. However there are no views to the bay from the interior of the building. The surrounding area is a middle class residential area with 8-12 floor high- rise apartment building dated from the 40’s to the 80’s . This is a historic preservation building owned by the city of rio de jeneiro. It was build in

the beginning of the 20th century and used to be a streetcar garage facility. In the late 1960’s the garage was deactivated and the building stayed abandoned until 1985, when the Brazilian Institute of Architects rented and renovated the building to accommodate its Rio De Janerio Chapter’s facilities. The Institute is currently moving to another location and the city Intends to sell

the property. It is under the Residential zoning.

CLIENT The loft is a space that will serve as an office and a home. Two adults who are married will share the loft. Mike has a daughter by the name of Gabriela from his second marriage. Laila on the other hand has been in many unsuccessful relationships until she meet Mike. They decided to mainly focus on her career for the time being. Mike lost his wife from his first marriage to a car accident. Gabriela was from his second marriage to Lola. Lola had run away with mike’s best friend. Thus Gabriela and Mike found a new wife and mother, Laila. Mike is 38 years old and is a textile designer. He was in the fashion business before getting deep into textile designing. As he was kid he always loved the design on textiles and was intrigued by it. He went to Parson’s in New York to do his bachelors in fashion design and masters in textile design. While working in the business he meet his first wife. Their marriage did not last for very long. She died in a car accident when Gabriella, their daughter was 8. Laila on the other hand is 42 and has a passion in fashion. She did her bachelors and masters in FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). There she meets her first and second husband. It ended in very soon one after the other. The third marriage was a failure because her husband had an affaire with his secretary. Laila has decided that life has more to offer than just heart aches. Laila focused so much on her work that her life was falling a part while her professional life was rising. That is when she meet Mike. They were doing some project together. They were great work partners and they fell in love with how each others worked. She is a focused person on what she wants in her professional life. She is one of a kind that only certain individual can understand, example Mike. She tries her best to balance her professional life with personal. She has decided that working is what is best for her and opening a design firm with some one she wants to spend the rest of her life with is way awesome. Laila and Mike decided that they should become business partners. They moved into a loft that was perfect to do business on the first level and live on the second level. This was a spur of a moment decision. Mike and Laila moved to Brazil 4 years back because they loved the people and life, plus want to expand their textile

and fashion business (KINO TEXTILE). They ended up bringing Gabi along and they have been there ever since. Mike’s daughter Gabi is attending college and majoring in political science. She is an activist and wants to live by what she preaches. She has taken the phrase “going green “ seriously. She has several monthly meetings, which she holds, in the residence. She is not interested in the pursuing her fathers business. She is a free spirit. She saw what her dad’s life has come too and she did not want to make the same mistake again. Gabi has her life in her hands, she has spread her wings and now she is flying. If she falls she knows that she will have support from her dad and step mom. She is mature for her age. Since Gabi is in her early adult years she is still discovering herself in the world. She is up for any challenge and is well organized for her age. Gabi feels that at time she needs a mother figure but she always looks up to her father and step mom for support and advice. Gabi is an outstanding student in school and has taken the pain to participate in as many activities that she think is worth it. Gabi has gone through a lot and now she has decide that she will be better of doing what she was born to do, which is live life to the fullest. Mike, Laila and Gabi all have different goals for the design of the loft. Gabi has a contemporary taste and wants to live in a sustainable space. She wants more natural light. She loves the nature. Gabi has a tendency of sleeping near her window because of the moonlight. She is mature in many ways but her comfort is very important to her. She loves doing Yoga and take walks in the park. Yet she is just an ordinary girl. Mike and Laila have a modern taste. They are husband and wife that share thoughts and life experience. They are very revolved in each other’s life. In a sense Gabi and Laila are mother then mother and child, they are friends, sisters in many ways. They share pretty much anything. Mike likes earthly tone and a splash of vibrant color. Laila on the other loves vibrant colors with a splash of earthly tome. Even though they have modern taste but they are different in their ways. Mike likes to work in a spacious space and loves to have classical music when he works. Laila on the other had likes to work with music but not classical. She loves Pop music. She like a lot of surface is to work with her design.

Aesthetic Guidance The metaphor will allow one to take an idea and move into design. It is a process that is a guidance to the concept statement. For example my metaphor was “POWER Thus the words were movement, repetition, mixture. Material language Based on the materiality Model the 3 words that came to mid was Symmetry, tension, and structural.

The workspace in the loft is a place where people generates ideas and good performance. • • • •

W O R K S P A C E

A place to enjoy working. A place that gives off energy. A place that evolves. A place that is connected and integrated.

The loft is a place where people come together to work and get inspired. The space will server as a inspiration as well as a place to generate ideas. The location of the office is among large land scrapes as well as near the bayside. This gives the opportunity of bringing in the freshness of the environment as well as the geometry forms around. Spaces are art piece. Rio is a place where tourist fill the sidewalks. The inspiring colonial design of the facade would be a form of art within the loft spaces. Modern and contemporary is a style inspirational to such a loft in such a fascinating area. Green design should be part of the design

The entrance to the office space will WELCOME clients with a sophisticated lounge that represents the style and creativity the Kino Firm is known for

In the lounge, potential clients will have the opportunity to see previous work and EXPERIENCE the wide range of expertise that the firm possesses.

the goal is to create a space that will INSPIRE creativity in the people that work there.

The space will be inspirational to the employees, MEMORABLE to clients, and one that moves people to take action. The highest concern is to provide the firm with an environment that represents their past approaches to design and problem solving and to inspire new ways to stay on top of the trends in textile design.

The HOUSE in the loft is a place where people gather around to communicate and relax.

H O M E

A place to enjoy living. A place that gives off energy. A place that evolves. A place that is connected and integrated work and home.

The loft is a place where the family can welcome guests as well as clients. The house should feel like a house when possible and a office when needed. The house should be elegant to host meetings and parties. Home is where the family comes close, thus the design should incorporate closeness and coziness. At the same time it should have privacy. The historical part of the house should be cherished and embraced with a twist of modernism. Green design should be part of the design

This project is taking place in Rio; it is a space that is 3 blocks from Guanabara Bay. It is in the midst of a middle class residential area. The building there dates back to the 40’s and 80’s. The loft itself is a historic building that has been preserved. The building is in under a residential zone. Loft is duel space (office and home). The owners Mike and Laila have invested in this loft, they are going to live with Mike’s daughter. The project has to encompass all three of their tastes. Modern, contemporary, and futuristic. There is going to be three occupant, Mike, 38, Laila,42 and gabi,19. The are two age group the adult and early adult. Age is a significant role in identifying the needs of personal space. Belief system is also important. Laili may be a practicing Christian but Mike and his child are not. The common values are that they like the house to be clean and tidy. Values are very important because they are living under one roof. Comfort from psychological symbols is significant because each individual has their own views. They will need a maid that comes in at 5am and leaves at 9pm. Thus appropriate spaces for her to rest should be provided.

The space is to be safe, asymmetrical and structured. There will be a reception desk at the front of the office with suitable seating for 2 to 5 people there should also be a work area for at least 7 to 12 people.

The noise level is high near the entrance because that is where the main street it.

Low Noise

The Semi noise level is due to the fact that there is a building right beside it, The adjacent building will absorb some of the noise. The center part of the building is where the level I low due to the fact that it is in the center and the fact that the sound dissipated.

The issue put forth in this design is to accommodate Mike, Laila and Gabi. It Is my duty to make sure their taste of modern, contemporary and traditional is in cooperated in the design. The goal of this project is to create a working and homely environment. The user seeks a place to relax, enjoy and work with full of inspiration. The loft is a place where the family activities are done. A place where the client comes to see the new design wave of the KOBI FIRM. The private and public space are considered when designing this loft. The loft responds to the architecture space and system that system diagrams.
