Savor the sun on the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, a 104.5 mile linear tree-lined waterway and multi-purpose trail. Bicycling and hiking enthusiasts enjoy the multi-purpose trail which is a link in the American Discovery Trail, a 6,800-mile, coast-to-coast trail devoted to non-motorized use. It is also part of the Grand Illinois Trail, a 535-mile loop through northern Illinois. Bicyclists ride from town to town, exploring history, savoring the local food scene, meeting the locals, and making new friends. Canoeists ply its smooth waters and anglers fish for bluegill, crappie, walleye, and bass. Horse enthusiasts and their horses trot along at their own pace, admiring the wildlife, prairies, and nature. Once the snow falls, it’s a snowmobiler’s delight. Enjoy a lazy summer picnic amidst the giant oaks, explore the fields of wildflowers, savor fall colors with cool nights, or have fun in the snow with cross–country skiing. The recreation area offers natural beauty. The centerpiece is a 58-acre lake with two-and-half miles of shoreline with boating and fishing opportunities. A fisherman’s paradise, the lake is stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, Muskie, northern pike, and catfish. In the fall, it becomes a popular pheasant, squirrel, and dove hunting area. Reservations are encouraged. Traveling the back roads, bicycle enthusiasts ride the Northern Tier of the American Bicyclist Association route with a connection in Kewanee and passing through Cambridge to Orion. You will also find many bicyclists on our country roads, connecting with our charming communities which showcase old-fashioned charm. Swap notes with fellow birders, chat with the guy at the next ice-fishing hole, or play disc-golf at one of the many community parks in Henry County. Savor the laid-back warm welcome as you sleep under the stars in one of seven different campgrounds and over 500 campsites Henry County offers. Sleep in cabins or even a yurt for your next outdoor adventure. There is no shortage of fun any season you visit!

Need a change of scenery? Dance with Nature “Henry County is an especially satisfying example of the nurturing side of us orderly fields and sturdy barns. You can start the day well before dawn and get a genuine smile with your coffee, then collapse into a simple and clean room after a full day’s shoot. No destination resorts here - the point is to be out in nature, the ‘real’ world,” said Kris Love, an avid local photographer. Kris encourages you to experience joyful sunrises and sunsets against the open landscape any season. Barns make hard-to-resist attractions, as does the historic architecture in Bishop Hill, Galva, Geneseo, Kewanee, and Orion. Relive our heritage; connect with nature, receive a warm, friendly hello in our restaurants and specialty shops. 11

While driving Henry County back roads, you will see rich farmland with picturesque agricultural vistas that seem to stretch forever. The fertile farm ground and the promise of the good life drew early pioneers to settle in Henry County. Dotting the scenery are small towns and villages telling the stories of the land. Eleven different museums and several agri-tourism attractions offer authentic learning experiences to visualize the stories of by-gone days. A visit to Henry County will conjure thoughts of a simpler time while strolling past restored 1800’s-era buildings, watching farmers work the fields with mid-1900’s equipment, and experiencing historic shopping districts in many communities. Visitors are sure to be enticed when walking tree-lined streets brimming with locally-owned unique shops, art galleries, and dining establishments in Geneseo and Kewanee. You will encounter a captivating Main Street setting with 19th Century architecture and a 100-year-old band shell in Orion. Stroll through the Cambridge Heritage Village Park, home to the 1843 courthouse, 1860’s sheriff’s horse barn, and 1910 train depot. A few must-sees are the Geneseo Historical Museum and the “underground railroad” connection along with Ryan’s Round Barn, one of the nation’s largest round barns and one of forty-two remaining in the State of Illinois. Kewanee Historical Society showcases many exhibits including the Cornhuskers Hall of Fame. St. Mary of the Fields Holy Shrine offers a “Rolle Bolle” Rosary that summons visitors to count rolle bolles on a pathway of prayer. Woodland Palace at Francis Park is the first “green” home in Illinois. Bring your friends and the grandkids to experience Henry County’s historical storytelling. There is much to see and do!

history in the making... SWEDISH HERITAGE TRAIL The back roads of any season are the best way to travel to Bishop Hill, a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1846 when a group of Swedish immigrants settled there. Celebrate Bishop Hill’s Swedish heritage by experiencing its old world charm in a timeless country village where descendants of the original colonists live and work to maintain a modern-day utopia through art, craftsmanship, and dedication to Swedish heritage traditions. Shop for local arts and crafts, lunch on Swedish meatballs at one of three restaurants, and take home a genuine Swedish memento. TWO SWEDISH TRAIL OPTIONS: Head south-east of Bishop Hill fifteen minutes: Enter Galva, named for a Swedish seaport. Driving through town, you will note streets lined with architecturally enhanced homes. Stop in at Hathaway’s Gift Barn for eclectic home décor and Christmas decorations. Hidden downtown is a 1930’s Midwest treasure, Jacobsen’s Bakery. Stop in the small storefront to purchase authentic Swedish rye bread, rusks, and cookies. Prices are posted; leave your payment in a tin lockbox. Head northwest of Bishop Hill twenty minutes: Another village with a Swedish-American chapter is the village of Andover. Jenny Lind Chapel is its cornerstone, built in 1870. Jenny Lind was a famous Swedish soprano and became America’s first international “rock star” when she toured with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. The chapel has become a destination spot to learn the story of Andover’s Swedish immigrants. 15

Laughter, suspense, sympathy, and even the occasional tear – the colorful, live performances of the Richmond Hill Players will capture your imagination and touch your heart! Converted from an old dairy barn in 1968, the Barn Theatre sits atop a bluff in Geneseo’s Richmond Hill Park. Its unique in-the-round configuration seats 162 spectators beneath original rustic timbers. With some of the best onstage and offstage talent in the area, roughly 150 active volunteers pool their expertise, creativity, and passion to bring audiences a theater experience that is not soon forgotten. A major renovation currently underway will introduce energy saving stage lights, new sound equipment to improve performance audibility, small audio-enhancement devices for hearing-impaired patrons, and audio description for blind or vision-impaired patrons. The theatre also offers handicap accessible seating. Laughs, tears, and joyful memories are made throughout the season which runs April to November, with performances scheduled Thursday through Sunday. Groups are welcome with ample room for bus parking. Richmond Hill Players invite all ages to visit and experience the adventure of live theater in 2014! architectural delights tour Enjoy a scenic architectural tour traveling the Henry County back roads. You’ll travel on two of Illinois’s county highways that start and end in the same county, Henry County, Illinois.

Geneseo Historic Museum Henry County Courthouse

Woodland Palace 34

After wandering through Geneseo neighborhoods of tree-lined streets with gorgeous, restored Victorian homes, stop in at the Geneseo Historical Museum. The 27-room Italianate mansion is an architectural delight in itself. It offers 12-foot ceilings, ornate crown moulding, five marble fireplaces, a 191prism chandelier, and two winding staircases. The museum contains a general store and Victorian-era rooms. Witness the “underground hiding hole” and visit the Lincoln Connection Room. Here you can learn about Geneseo’s rich heritage and how early abolitionists made Geneseo an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Dine at one of the many restaurants located in the Geneseo Historic District. Travel south on Route 82 to Cambridge and view the finest courthouse in Illinois, the Henry County Courthouse. It was designed in 1880 by T.J. Tolan and Son with Brentwood S. Tolan. It features Second Empire-style architecture

and consists of three stories and a lower level. Sixteen fireplaces and black walnut woodwork are featured throughout the courthouse. The Seth Thomas clock was restored in 2010. Head east on County Highway 81 into Kewanee, turn north on Highway 78; just a few miles up the road is Johnson Sauk Trail State Park. Near the entrance is Ryan’s Round Barn.

This unique barn towers over the scenic countryside and rises to more than 80 feet high and 85 feet in diameter. It has three levels including an 80 foot high center silo with a 10 foot cupola. In 1974, the Ryan Round Barn became the first round barn listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the State of Illinois. This symbol of beauty was constructed by Dr. Laurence Ryan for his 50 head of black angus show cattle, some of the very first to be imported from Scotland. It is open for public tours seasonally. After leaving the park, head south again • 2014 Henry County Visitor’s Guide

and watch for signage to head east to Francis Park and Woodland Palace. You’ll visit an unusual home built ahead of its time filled with engineering wonders. Fred Francis, a quirky, eccentric Leonardo da Vincilike man began building Woodland Palace, the first “green home” in Illinois, in 1889. The work continued for the next 36 years. A windmill was the sole source of power for the house and features Illinois’s first nonelectric air-conditioning system. View the sophisticated achievement of disappearing windows, doors, and more. Visit a home where everything works in harmony. Before heading to the Kewanee Historical Society’s Robert and Marcella Richards Museum, stop for some afternoon brew at Cerno’s Bar and Grill which provides an inviting

atmosphere centered around a spectacular 1898 Belgian, mirrored, mahogany back bar with accents that span 50 feet. As you head to the museum, you’ll encounter the historic 1868 Butterwick Building and learn about the industries that built Kewanee. Rest your head at one of the five lodging facilities in

the area. It’s a new day for travels in the morning. Each community in Henry County holds architectural marvels around every corner. Others of note are: The Orion Water Tower and band shell, Kewanee’s Good’s Skywalk, Osco’s Graffiti Barn, Hooppole’s
