Be IN BANBURY
this winter
This Winter we have so much to offer you, from stunning Winter Light Displays, to the opportunity to win a fantastic prize of ÂŁ500 to spend in our town. 2020 has brought about many challenges, but also created opportunities to do things differently, a lot of our businesses have had to adapt and evolve to ensure that all of our visitors receive a safe and welcoming experience. Banbury Business Improvement District represents over 500 town centre businesses and they have all contributed to the creation of this guide, and to the production of our Winter Light Displays. We hope you will enjoy both, and be able to experience our town safely. Throughout the guide, you will see reference to our LoyalFree app. Please support our town centre businesses by downloading our app to keep up to date with events and deals in the town. And if you find yourself isolating this winter, you can still experience the LoyalFree audio tour of Banbury from the comfort of your own home. On behalf of all of our 539 contributing businesses I want to say thank you for your continued support throughout such a challenging year. Our guide will connect you to the people and faces behind the businesses.

BANBURY MUSEUM Banbury Museum & Gallery situated in Castle Quay provides the town with a cultural offer rich in local history, a gallery hosting touring exhibitions and a family fun events programme. The next exhibition to grace the town is Portrayals which has been made possible through loans secured from the Arts Council Collection, the world’s largest loan collection of modern and contemporary British art. The loans are supported by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund. Portrayals brings together more than 45 original paintings and drawings by some of the country’s most celebrated twentieth century and contemporary artists, including David Hockney, Lucian Freud and Paula Rego. The specially curated exhibition runs from 21 November 2020 to 7 March 2021 – the most ambitious display the organisation has ever staged and the first time so many works by artists of this stature can be viewed together in the town. Selected to appeal to people-watchers and art lovers alike, Portrayals focuses on people, and the varied ways they have
been depicted by 34 different artists across the last century. Further highlights from the exhibition include works by three Turner Prize winners - Chris Ofili, Antony Gormley and Howard Hodgkin – as well as a further four Turner Prize nominees; and original drawings and paintings by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Simon Townsend, Director of Banbury Museum & Gallery states “This exhibition is a statement, that illustrates just what we can do together. LOCK 29
Lock29 is a sustainable community destination that opened in Banbury in August 2020. The venue features diverse and exciting food and drink artisans set in a completely unique creative space that pays homage to its hometown, whilst reaching out to visitors from far and wide. Lock29 started life as a vision to breathe new life into the canal side destination and rethink a critical, abandoned space for the benefit of the community. Since launching in the midst of a global pandemic, Lock29 has changed and grown and we are excited about the next chapter, which will see additional elements of Lock29 open to the public. As Lock29 continues to grow, and with Castle Quay Waterfront continuing its journey to its first phase of opening in Spring/Summer 2021, these linked and interconnected canal side spaces will continue to be a hub of activity offering something for everyone.
Together with Happerley England, we are welcoming more and more local Banbury businesses into the space, ensuring that we have a really exciting offer for you this winter and beyond. Join us this winter for festive competitions, special offers, new recipes, Christmas activities and a whole lot of lovely stuff. The vision has now become a reality and we invite you to be part of the story.

SEWING IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN
We rediscovered our inner creativity during the lock down, and Banbury has a selection of shops that cater for every skill level. For art supplies, The Artery is the place to be. Doodledash Interiors sells stencils and paints for sprucing up your furniture, and The Banbury Sewing Centre provides traditional and modern haberdashery, all of which help customers create bespoke projects. When lockdown struck earlier this year The Banbury Sewing Centre carried on trading using the ShopAppy platform, organised by Banbury BID. Owner Amy said, “We donated a lot of mask making kits for free which people ordered from ShopAppy. Our kit had enough fabric to make ten masks which people made and donated to the vulnerable, health centres, and care homes”. With the reopening of the shop these designs are proving popular, “As well as readymade masks we’ve got a big range of designer fabrics to make your own, I think the face mask is being seen as an expression of the wearers individuality”.
Mask Madness continues and having made thousands for the NHS, Fire Service and Banbury Horton Hospital, Amy and her team are now making autumn, Halloween and Christmas themed masks. One thing is clear, Banbury has lots of talented artisans, and love for their craft not only supports our local businesses and services but also our community. Don’t “Make Do”!
LET us mend it!
As the world moves toward sustainable fashion, there has never been a better time to treasure the things you love, so that they last you a lifetime. 2020 has changed the way many of us shop. A new set of values seems to have emerged in our community, leading us to be more mindful of how much we buy and what we wear. The things you own have a story, they bring memories of family gatherings, work achievements, and life milestones. To you they may even have more value than they did when you originally bought them and this is why you cherish them. “There is no need to throw away that pair of shoes you love, or garments that don’t fit any longer. Our local businesses can help you bring life back to the items you wish to keep for a long time.” says Mark Sharman at Banbury Shoe Repairs & Key Cutting Service. From shoe repairs and dry cleaning, to clothing mending and altering, Banbury’s high street has you covered.
If longevity is something you’re passionate about, make sure you pay them a visit this winter and give the things you treasure the care they deserve.

EYES TO The

When dreams become vision, they can also become a tangible reality. And this is exactly what happened to Barry Lever, who this year saw his dream become a reality before his very eyes. “I have been in Banbury’s high street for eight years and I have no wish to be anywhere else.” Barry tells us. “I always knew exactly where I wanted to build my business.“ Just across the street from his old premises, Barry has opened Complete Eyecare on number 13. The old Charles Clinkard shoe shop is now a state-of-the-art optics and hearing care centre, equipped with the latest eye care innovations. The Best Evenings
Out In Banbury This Winter
Help keep Banbury’s evening life alive and pop to the town for a meal or festive tipple. With great pubs, bars and eateries offering a wide international menu, even the most hard-to-please are spoilt for choice. As COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect life, you may be faced with the dilemma of what’s the right thing to do: either going out to enjoy some evening cheer, or stay snuggled at home. Over the past few months, Banbury’s pubs, bars and restaurants have all made an incredible effort to adapt to the new social distancing demands to keep customers safe. They may have weathered many storms before, but nothing has ever equalled the unprecedented challenges brought this year. Over centuries pubs have been the beating heart of a community. A meeting place for the young and the old, where good food is shared over a pint or two, while putting the
world to rights. Although this year may feel a little different, there are still lots of reasons to celebrate and enjoy your favourite local. “Table service has revolutionised the way we operate - it makes the customers feel safer, helps us with social distancing and the track and trace app works really well!” Rob Foreman from Apothecary Tap tells us. You may also love the idea of taking your very special one for a romantic meal or a quiet drink. From seasoned stalwarts to tasty newcomers, there is plenty of delicious food to choose from and get your taste buds racing.

New Year new JOB
With many workers being furloughed and a demand for vital changes in the workplace, there is a hive of recruitment activity happening this winter. Oxfordshire has always been one of the best areas in the country to find employment, with Banbury typically enjoying less than 1% unemployment. With the recent lockdown restrictions and a reduction in employer confidence this year, it has understandably become more difficult to find a new job, as more people enter the job market to a decreased number of vacancies. Stuart Moore from Plus One Personnel says “Local employment agencies play a vital part in linking jobseekers into job opportunities, and Banbury is fortunate to have some very good agencies, working across a wide range of industry sectors, with links to hundreds of businesses in the area.” If you are looking for work or you are an employer looking to hire, here is a list of employment agencies based in the town centre who could assist you.

Striving for
work-home
balance
Winter is the time of year when your home becomes the central hub for family activities. Having a dedicated space to fully focus on work can help you be more productive. Finding a local office to rent, or workstation to use, can provide you with some breathing space. Richard Gotch, owner of North Bar House — a grade II listed office building in Banbury town centre — has found a growing number of people renting individual offices as their work-from-home space. “Our smaller offices are renting as soon as they become available,” he says. For a shorter term solution the Mill Arts Centre offers a table to yourself, with plug, wifi and a bowl of soup, all for £10 for 3 hours. Feeling comfortable while you are working is key, and if you can’t move to a new office you could treat yourself to a new office chair. Streamline Office Services Ltd on South Bar can help you find the perfect chair and desk to make your office as ergonomic as possible, wherever you find yourself working.
