Message from the Minister of Health
Our brilliant! event
On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, I would like to extend my best wishes and sincerest thanks to each of you in attendance at the second annual Brilliant! A Show of Love for Mental Health and HIV/AIDS. Tonight you will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of British Columbians living with mental health issues and HIV/AIDS.
Welcome to brilliant! A Show of Love for Mental Health and People Living with HIV/AIDS, where we join the fashion and creative community in celebrating the progress we’ve made in treating mental health issues and HIV/AIDS.
I know that this evening will be a celebration of love and a demonstration of unity and support for our friends and loved ones who are facing these challenges. Our government is committed to providing the best supports for people facing challenges associated with mental illness. Together, we can reduce the stigma and pain connected with mental illness. We are also committed to supporting and enhancing diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. As part of our vision of an AIDS-free generation, announced $19.9 million in annual funding to support the provincial expansion of the STOP HIV/AIDS program throughout B.C. beginning April 1, 2013. British Columbia is recognized as a global leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS and is the only province in Canada showing a consistent decline in new HIV diagnoses. Of course, all of this is made possible thanks to the work and expertise of St. Paul’s Hospital, the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, with its exceptional director Dr. Julio Montaner, and the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation – and public supporters like all of you. Your dedication to making a difference in people’s lives is to be commended. Thank you for attending this event, and enjoy the evening.
Through the world-leading care, research and teaching taking place at St. Paul’s Hospital, we have transformed HIV from a death sentence to a chronic condition and helped remove the stigma attached to mental illness. As far as we’ve come, however, more work needs to be done. To that end, proceeds from tonight’s event will support future advances in the treatment of mental health issues and HIV/AIDS at St. Paul’s Hospital. Thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers and guests who are supporting the cause at tonight’s event. You can learn more about the impact of your support by visiting www.helpstpauls.com.

From the artist regarding the Red Skies collection:
Donated by: Vancouver Firefighters Value: Priceless
“This primary colour symbolizes many things, the foremost being love and passion, and I wanted to envelope my canvas with that feeling, sharing vibrant scenes of Vancouver, this city that I love. Red energizes the paintings in exciting new ways, giving new perspectives on familiar subjects; iconic buildings, streets bustling with cars zooming along, deep rich waters, pulsing lights and sublime red skies over this this ever changing and evolving city.” “The Suntower” began with a flat black gesso’d canvas, outlining the image with black graffiti KRink pen, then applying layer after layer of paint to create the shapes, shadows and light, all warm and inviting in a whimsical style. 48” x 72” acrylic on canvas Donated by: John Ferrie Value: $1800
