The ultimate

girls’ night

Nothing is more fun than having a great time with your best girlfriends.   We give you a mixed bouquet full of inspiration, recipes and ideas that you and your friends can try the next time you’re ready to party. Have fun!

The ultimate

Now Zizzi has their very own cocktails! Developed by Martin Grauballe, head bartender at Murphy’s in Herning, Denmark.

cocktails…

Zizzi Sling

In a highball glass, combine 1/8 Bombay gin, 1/8 sour mix, 3/8 citrus mineral water and 3/8 orange juice (in that order). Add red grenadine, pouring it down the sides of a straw (so that the syrup does not get mix with the rest of the ingredients). The Zizzi Sling has a wonderful, fullbodied, fruity flavour. The orange really shines through, while the grenadine adds sweetness. This is an elegant drink – sure to be a hit for a true City Girl! 12

Zizzi Magazine spring 2010

ZJ Cool

In a cocktail glass, mix 2/6 Cruzan citrus (citrus rum), crushed fresh lime and 3/6 lemon soda with crushed ice. Add 1/6 Blue Curacao, pouring it down the sides of a straw. The ZJ Cool tastes fantastic! It’s fresh, but with citrusy notes; has edge, without being sour. It’s Cool! A total Party Chic cocktail!

Zay R omance

Pour 3/5 Sprite into a cocktail glass. In a shaker, mix 1/5 Cuba Passion and 1/5 Monin Fraise (strawberry syrup) with crushed ice and a little whipped cream. Shake, then pour the contents into the cocktail glass so that the drink foams up. Zay Romance is a real girls’ drink. Mild, light and silky smooth with a nice sweetness. A drink worthy of a princess!

Music is a must...

A party with no music is like a summer with no sun. Luckily there are plenty of possibilities…

You could have everyone to bring their favourite party CDs. If you need inspiration, we can recommend Hits from the 60s and 80s, Eurovision Hits, the Beatles, ABBA etc. Anything goes, provided it’s music you can singalong to. You can also take it one step further and borrow/rent a Karaoke system that comes with party music. Or try out the latest craze with a round of Sing Star. You will need a PlayStation 2 or 3, a TV and a Sing Star set. When the text appears on the screen, just sing along as the words turn green. The objective is to hit the notes, sing in tune and have fun.

The ultimate

cocktail snacks…

Wasabi peas Available in supermarkets, specialty shops and in many other shops.   Ready to serve. Beware – they have   a kick.

Soy almonds Make your own alternative to salted peanuts. Try soy almonds. You will need approx. 100 g almonds, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar glaze (the sweet, thick balsamic vinegar) and a little olive oil. Roast the almonds in a hot, dry pan. Turn down the heat and douse them with a healthy amount of soy sauce while stirring. Add about 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar glaze and about 1 tbsp olive oil. Place the almonds on a piece of baking parchment and allow to cool before serving. They will be a bit sticky, but taste amazing!

Edamame beans Require a little more work… Available in Asian food shops. Steam the beans in slightly salty water for approx. 10 min., then pour into a bowl and sprinkle with flake salt and lemon juice. Remember – don’t eat the shells. Just squeeze the beans out like you’re blanching almonds.

Puff pastry with sesame seeds Cut a sheet of thawed puff pastry into narrow strips on the short side. Place on a baking sheet, brush with a little beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in the oven for 10-12 min. at 200ºC.

The ultimate preparation…

Face mask

Make your own luxurious face mask that adds moisture and calms the skin. It’s simple! All you need is half an avocado and half a banana. Mash them together into a nice, smooth cream. Then add a tablespoon of soft honey. The mask is now ready. Wash your face thoroughly. Cover your face and neck with the mask and massage it in. Allow it to work for 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Now feel how nice and soft your skin is. Finish with a good moisturiser.

14

Zizzi Magazine spring 2010

Hand massage Pamper your hands.

All you need is some oil – for example baby oil.

1. Pour a little oil in the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to warm the oil slightly. Spread the oil evenly all over your left hand using long, stroking movements. 2. Now use your thumb to make large circle movements from the middle of the back of your left hand and out. Repeat 4-5 times. 3.

Place your thumb between the tendons on the back of your hand and massage with long, stroking movements between each tendon up towards your wrist. Repeat several times.

4. Now massage each finger on your left hand – one at a time. Rub in small circle movements the entire length of your finger. Repeat for the remaining four fingers. Move on to the palm of your hand. Again, use your thumb to make circle movements from the middle of your palm and out. Don’t be afraid to apply a bit of pressure. Repeat 4-5 times. 5.

Finally, lace your fingers together, press your palms away from you and stretch your hands. Repeat on your right hand.

False eyelashes Get the eyes of a movie or rock star in seconds. With false eyelashes, you can really enhance the beauty of your eyes. You can make them dramatic, with thick, long lashes, elegant with shorter individual lashes or cat-like with extra long lashes on the outside corners of your eyes. Give it a try. False eyelashes cost from DKK 50 and up and are available at perfume departments, beauty shops and on the Internet. And while you’re at it, why not experiment with eyeliner, lots of mascara and eyeshadow in beautiful colour combinations.

Hair extensions New hair in minutes. Hair extensions are available in all styles, colours and lengths, and at all price levels. On the Internet, you can find extensions for as little as DKK 10, but of course, there is a huge difference in quality and appearance.

A girls’ night is the perfect chance to experiment with new hair styles and looks. If you and your friends have different types of hair extensions, then bring them all along and try them out. It’s amazing how little it takes to make your hair look thicker. If you have short hair, you can try what it feels like to have hair down to your shoulders – or you can see how you look with your hair up. Give it a try.

A rtificial nails

Footbath

Well-manicured nails look fantastic.

Give your feet a nice bath, and they’ll be ready to dance the night away. You will need 2 tsp coarse salt, 2 tsp baking powder and 2 tbsp table salt.

It doesn’t have to be difficult, expensive or time-consuming to have the most elegant diva nails. You can buy artificial nail sets in the perfume departments of most major department stores as well as in personal care shops. A French Manicure set costs approx. DKK 100, and comes with very helpful instructions. You will have the loveliest nails with a delicate white edge. And you decide how long you want them to be. For more colourful nails, just give them a layer or two of polish. If you follow the instructions correctly, these nails can easily last for about a week.

Use a wash tub or bucket. Mix the coarse salt with the baking powder. Pour into the tub and fill with plenty of warm water. The salt cleanses and the baking powder softens your feet. Soak for 10-15 minutes. Remove your feet from the water, massage and scrub them with the table salt and dip them back in the water. Carefully dry your feet with a terry cloth towel, check whether your toenails need trimming and finish by rubbing your feet with a good moisturiser. Now you’re ready to party!

Lingerie Guide Brassiere, bandeau, bra... One undergarment,   many names… The design of women’s undergarments has under gone significant change since 1905, when Danes were first introduced to   the concept of the bra as   the bone-stiffened foun dation piece that replaced   the corset as support for   the bosom.

Photo: Elomi

In 1912, the first bra without bone stiff eners was sewn in soft mesh and silk by the corset manufacturer S. Lindauer, and the following year Mary Phelps-Jacobs created a much simpler bra from two silk handkerchiefs sewn together and with ribbon edging. At the time, several manufacturers took it in turns to claim they had designed the first bra. But one thing is certain, over the nearly 100 years that have followed, the female attributes have been alternately flattened, accentuated, lifted, cupped – and at one point even liberated completely. Today, the variety of women’s foundation wear has become a veritable wonderland. Here we provide inspiration for lovely lace and delicate designs that will really make the most of your figure.

Which bra should I choose? There is no doubt that what you wear underneath plays an important role in how your clothes fit. If your bra does not fit properly, even the most expensive and beautiful bra will not provide the support you need or help you achieve the body shape you are looking for. For instance, if your bra is too large around the band or the cup size is too small, it is almost impossible to get your blouse or dress to fit properly. But luckily there is help available! Hella Joof

Hodgepodge is my motto We know her mostly from radio and TV. She is one of Denmark’s most exciting women – funny, sharp, talented, interesting and loveable. In addition to being an actress, she boasts a variety of other titles on her CV: scriptwriter, director, comedian, commentator and even judge. At least on Denmark’s national talent TV show – Talent 09. Behind these titles is a wonderful personality.   A woman who speaks her mind, has a huge   heart and a delightful sense of humour! Of course we are talking about Hella Joof.

Where do you find your energy and drive? My energy comes mainly from friendship and love. If things aren’t going well on the homefront, then nothing else really matters. Imagine holding a winning lottery ticket worth millions when the one you love suddenly announces that he has found someone else or your daughter comes home to tell you that she’s moving to Australia just to get away from you. I would probably just die inside. But I also have a very professional side. I have no problems working, even though I’m sad or my back hurts. I can deposit my private life in the cloak room. That’s something I’ve had to learn. At times, my life has been pretty chaotic, and if I had let my personal problems get the best of me, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve anything!

Are you ever afraid to be honest and speak your mind? Yes. But I try to do so anyway. I try to remember what I, personally, would prefer. I always prefer to hear the truth. I don’t like to think that people don’t tell me the truth if they think I have screwed up – or make wrong decisions. I think keeping your mouth shut when you can see that someone is going down the wrong track is actually a sign of lack of respect. But then again, you don’t necessarily have to say everything. If people ask you whether they should shave off all their beautiful long, thick hair, of course, I would shout, „No way!“ But if they come to work one day and have already done it, I would probably say, „It looks great, you have a great face for it!“

Hella Joof is also very forthcoming and was delighted to see us for an interview on her professional life and her thoughts on a variety of topics.

Have you always been good at taking chances in life, or is that something you’ve had to learn?

So settle down and enjoy Hella’s wise and humorous answers to our questions.

That is absolutely not something that I’ve always been good at! When I look back on my childhood and especial ly my youth, which lasted until I was 30, I am surprised at how afraid I was of not succeeding. If I could have seen

my future in a crystal ball, I probably wouldn’t have be lieved it. I’ve never lacked self-confidence, but I’ve had to work hard to develop a sense of my own self-worth.

bullying. Humour is what brings us through life without getting too bitter. Just think about all the truths that can be told when wrapped in humour!

What event has taught you the most about yourself?

Where would one most likely run into you?

Hmm… Well, I’m still very proud that I gave birth to my daughter at home, in my own bed without any kind of pain relief. And at times, I have probably stuck my nose up in arrogance at women who make a big deal about laughing gas and epidurals. I think they cheated them selves out of a fantastic personal development experien ce. Of course it hurts. But being a parent hurts too! But I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that people are different, and there are also things that I’m afraid of. I can wake up with an anxiety attack because of the sound of an ambulance, and parallel parking really makes me sweat!

I love Værnedamsvej in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. There’s a wonderful butcher shop, wine merchant, coffee house, wine bar and flower shops. I go there at least once a day.

Do you feel like a role model? No, but I often think that there could be a little brown girl somewhere in Denmark who thinks that maybe looking different isn’t all that bad after all. It is possible to achieve your goals. And I never cross the street on a red light when there are kids watching. In fact, come to think of it, I never cross on a red at all.

All the time! I actually do try to hide my feelings sometimes. I’m glad I’m not a politician. I would start crying because it’s so unfair, and I would prob ably also end up punching a journalist or two. It’s actually kind of scary how much politi cians can put up with. They really have to be thick-skinned. I’m glad it’s not me!

When do you say no to a project? I’ve developed a knack for sensing bad energy. If things are too difficult in the start-up stage, it’s often because someone is trying to tell you something, as I like to say. And I’m also getting better at turning down projects if I’m too busy. You can almost always be replaced. And I’m useless when I’m stressed out!

What is your next professional project? I’m currently working on a political comedy, and I’m going to host the national charity event „Danmarks Indsamlingen“ and in connection with that I will be travelling to Mozambique. I’m also doing a radio show. And a children’s film. Plus, I have a whole host of half-written manuscripts on my computer. Finally, I hope to become a grandmother within the next few years!

What is good humour? Good humour is warm and playful – and points to something good. It can be as crude as you like, but if it doesn’t have a positive purpose, it’s just taunting and

22

Zizzi Magazine spring 2010

What is your relationship to beauty? When I was younger, I wouldn’t step out the door with out my make-up. I was a lovely woman who weighed 58 kg. And despite my lovely, thin body, I had a serious inferiority complex. I thought my thighs were fat, and there was no end to what was wrong with me! Now I feel good about my body. It’s a little worn, but so what? In return, I have a beautiful daughter, and I’ve had enough of all those complexes. Life’s too short! I use skincare products and I eat a lot of vegetables. I try not to lose heart, because that just makes you look sad. Laughter and sex are my best beauty tips, and a lotion called Power Rich from Dermalogica.

What do you think is the most beautiful part of your body? My teeth are quite nice, and my skin, when I have a tan. But it’s what’s inside that’s fun!

Where do you find fashion inspiration? Oh, all kinds of places. I like colour – especially in the winter. And ethnic features. I think it’s important to mix styles. A pair of beautiful, expensive shoes look great with an old leather bag that you inherited from your aunt. Large scarves and hand-knit hats. And I shop a lot in second-hand stores. „Hodgepodge’ is my motto!

How would you describe the ultimate girls’ night? Lots of red wine and no smoking except on the balcony. And lots of food and preferably dancing. I love hanging out with women. We have the juiciest discussions at the table, everyone’s thrown off their high heals by half nine, and you don’t have to hold in your stomach!

Do you have any good advice for us girls? Yes! Here it is: Life gets better and better as you get older. Don’t be afraid, of not being slim or young enough. It’s all transitory. I have a heroine. Her name is Precious Ramotswe, a warm and wise African lady. She is wellproportioned – and calls herself a woman of „traditional build“. She is the main character in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, and she says: „Everyone knows that we have a skeleton underneath our skin; there’s no reason to show it!“

Love for 400, please! By Audrey Castañeda, „Danish comedian“

BEING SINGLE HAS NOT BEEN GOOD FOR MY WAISTLINE. FOR ME, A LONG, RELAXING SUNDAY MEANS HANGING OUT WITH A BAGE OF SWEETS! Why can’t I be more devil-may-care, like in my younger days? Always on the go – I’d show the world, clenching my teeth and spinning like I was late for the Olympics. Why are images in my mind not as intense as an adult as they were in my youth? Why don’t I see my dad’s face anymore, grimacing as he shakes his head in exaspera tion, „Ha, you in showbiz! Hand me my sombrero, please, and let me choke on a taco!“ How I could dance with that image in my mind. I would show him and the rest of the world… and it worked. What a triumph. Whether it was a stupid ex-boyfriend, a teasing comment by someone at school… it didn’t matter. I could picture it in my mind and dance it away, get better, set goals, be the best, I wanted to win and I did!

And now? Well… I grew up, I guess. At first, I said, you deserve to eat this, because you’ve worked so hard all your life. I’d like another croissant, please! Then it got cold outside, and the dance academy seemed so far away. And then it was time for „Survivor“… Did you know you can zap between „Survivor“ and „Who Wants to Be a Millionaire“ on Mondays in Denmark? The commercial breaks alternate pretty well… „Survivor“: There’s been a row and the host says: „One of you has to leave“ cut to commercial – zap. The host has reached the 50,000 DKK question… (Just between us… that’s when it really starts to get interesting!) I yell the answer at the TV, scratch my head and decide that it must be in Nigeria. Come on, give us the answer… Now they’re at each other’s throats on „Survivor“! I can do that all evening. It’s so exciting, I think I’ll have another toffee. Loneliness sneaks into your adult body, without you realising it. A loneliness that’s trying to get your attention in the winter darkness. A mild loneliness that pushes me back onto the sofa every time I consider getting my act together and doing something healthy, like exercising or switching to rice cakes! Boyfriendless – along with half a million other fantastic women – I can’t seem to get in gear and beat the competition. On the contrary. I’ve heard myself say, “All the good men are taken“ and „I’m tired of all the dancing and hanging out in bars, acting like I’m all that“! „He’ll appear when I least expect it!“

Audrey At least that’s what I would say to myself as I lay on the couch in my sugar stupor, ready to crawl into bed. (Don’t you hate it when you finally admit the truth to yourself just before you drop off?) Yeah, he’ll come if the guy can find his way through the mail slot and past all the sweet wrappers, maybe he’ll be holding a pizza! Then something happened. I bought a ticket to Prague, I was going to a football match. My football mates called the night before, and I was so excited! My first football match outside the country! They cancelled! Now I had to decide whether to go to Prague alone with 800 other football maniacs. Because that’s what they become when you don’t know them. Deranged, the whole lot. But I really wanted to go to Prague, so I went. The next morning, I arrived at the airport all nervous. I was terri fied that people would recognise me now that I didn’t have any friends to hide behind. And I was forced to spend an entire day with a bunch of blokes who hate women comedians. At least I earned a few cheap points for appearing on „Zulu Devil Race“ on danish television.

It was because I was alone that my   vulnerability came out. People were   so nice to me, I left my armour back in Denmark. I was open, and I drank in every word, every minute. I had no idea what would happen next, I had no one to hide behind. I wondered what we would find if we took a right? A bell went off in my head. I realised that I’d been ob serving everyone else for a long time, but always kept on the outside. I always have something to say about them and about myself. But it had been ages since I’d walked into a room on my own, just to see what would happen. Tried something new, alone, just for the fun of it. That has become my motto for 2010! Do it for the fun of it. Hey, maybe you’ll make new friends – and maybe love will have a chance to ask you to dance after all! That’s enough to make you want to dig into that rice cake and turn off the telly.

Women’s bo dy im age

over the ages Ideals of female beauty have changed throughout history. An ideal body image is more than just a question of aesthetics. Cultural and societal aspects also play a major role. That was the case in the Stone Age, and that is the case today. However, another factor influences today’s conventional view of the ideal female body – fashion!

As God created woman… Women are created differently to men. And for a good reason. Women differ from men in their special ability to reproduce. However, this ability to produce life has also formed the basis for a strangely divided view of the female body. On the one hand, the female body is a wonderful creation – a part of nature whose powerful, hidden forces and potent fertility came with curvaceousness, generous proportions and a solid constitution in order to be able to handle pregnancy in the tough life in ancient times. On the other hand, the female body has also been placed on a pedestal for thousands of years as a symbol of beauty and status to be shaped, plumped up or emaciated according to the ideals of the day.

48

From behind

A woman’s hips are built for giving birth. And   regardless of the size of the waistline above them, wide hips send an ancient signal that this woman   is capable of bearing children. There is also a perfectly good reason why our bums stick out the way they do. The buttocks developed when humans began to walk upright on their hind legs. This required large, powerful muscles in the   lower back. And thanks to the wide hips on the female body, the bottom is also generously proportioned. A plump, curvaceous bum has been considered a sign of beauty for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks worshipped the goddess of love Aphrodite   for her beautiful, round bottom. While in Africa,   women with large protruding bums are still envied.

In front

We mustn’t forget our breasts. No other part of the  female body has attracted more attention over the ages than the breasts. First of all, these round hemispheres are created by nature to produce the healthiest meal for babies. But they are also an established symbol of femininity, and big or small, they have an unparalleled ability to attract the opposite sex.

Female attributes

The female body as status symbol

For several centuries, a narrow waistline has been the desired look. The slimmer the better, which is actually rather absurd, because a woman’s waistline often changes when she gives birth to her first child. Due to changes beyond our control that take place in the abdominal region during and after pregnancy, women naturally become more full-figured after giving birth. Furthermore, hormonal changes in a woman’s body have a tendency to cause the waist and abdomen to become heavier and broader with age. That is how the female body naturally works, and it can be very difficult fight nature.

Regardless of era, continent or culture, humans have never been fully satisfied with the bodies nature gave them. And so they have introduced various methods of decorating the body or reshaping it to achieve a new look – tattoos, scratches in the skin, piercing. These „artistic“ alterations played an important role and were given ritual or magical functions.

Zizzi Magazine spring 2010

Giraffe women Other types of changes to the body have been introduced for social reasons, such as to denote the social status of a person or family. The Padaung women in Burma are a good example. At the age of five, girls have a brass ring attached around their necks. Year after year, an extra ring is added, until as adults they wear 22-24 rings. They can work with the rings on, but if the rings are removed, their throat and neck collapse.

Lily foot In China, having tiny feet was considered a sign of high status for women. Thus, from the age of six, girls in wealthy families had their feet tightly bound. These tiny feet were called lily feet or Golden Lotus. As adults, the women could hardly walk on their deformed feet, but certainly looked noble! People in primitive or distant cultures are not alone in seeking to reshape the body to conform to the ideals of the day. The practice has also taken place in Europe – even in Scandinavia. The most notable difference is

that in primitive cultures the practice often applies to both men and women, while in the so-called civilised society, women have been the primary subjects of unending torture in order to achieve a body that corresponds to the status-generating ideal body image.

The corset In Scandinavia, the corset gained popularity in the late 1800s. But it was by no means a new phenomenon. It had been known in Europe for several hundred years in various styles. But the 1880s saw a boom. This was partly the result of the development of new aesthetic ideals and partly due to a growing need to differentiate between upper and middle-class women. The tightly laced corsets were harmful, but women wore them nonetheless as a status symbol. It was not possible to work when your body was laced up tight, and so as a symbol of higher social standing, the lady of the house tied herself up like a roast beef.

Sandro Boticelli’s, La nascita di Venere, 1484.

Ideals of beauty then and now

The return of curves

One of the oldest examples of an ideal image of the female body is the little Venus of Willendorf statuette discovered in Austria in the early 1900s. The statuette of Venus dates back to around 21,000 B.C. and depicts an idealised image of the female body of that era.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the female form returned for a brief period. Especially on the big screen. Shapely women like Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe and Anita Ekberg made feminine forms attractive again. And while the waist was still enhanced, the female body as a whole was now soft, curvy and sensual.

Renaissance painters like Botticelli, Tizian and Rafael also depicted idealised images of the female body, presenting it as both voluptuous and graceful. Women were primarily viewed as mothers, and their beauty was inextricably linked to their ability to bear children. This called attention to the abdominal region of the body, making the round, full female figure the aesthetic interpretation of the perfect beauty at that time.

New times The natural, curved female body was the ideal for several centuries. All the way up to the beginning of the 1900s, when the slim body image became popular and the wasp waist saw the light of day. After World War I, the age of the curvaceous woman was over. The most popular silent movie stars of the day set a new agenda, and for the first time, we heard about young girls starving themselves to look like their idols.

50

Zizzi Magazine spring 2010

Time for change Over the past 50 years, however, the female body image has moved in many different directions. From toothpickthin girls to full-figured women with breasts „roaming free“. And it is very liberating to see signs within the fashion industry itself of a growing awareness that many catwalk models have become too thin, and that a woman with curves sends a much healthier signal to women. This is a process that will take a long time, but it is worth waiting for if it means that there will be fewer young girls who starve themselves in an effort to attain an unnatural body image. It would be wonderful if we women could be more relaxed about our bodies and instead enjoy the fantastic things the female body is capable of.
