Tell us about your formative years?

I have had wonderful and blessed formative years. Since the beginning, I had been an all rounder right from school to college till the University. I have done a course in Public Policy from Harvard University, USA. And Masters in Human Rights from Panjab University, Chandigarh and Bachelors in Psychology (Honours) from GCG, Panjab University, Chandigarh and topped in the University in both Graduation and Masters and was felicitated with a University Gold Medal twice. I have also done a Post-Graduate Course in NGO Management from Amity University and completed my schooling from Delhi Public School, Chandigarh. And I am fortunate to have such supportive parents who believe in me, my talent and my decisions and this made the

formative years even more blissful.

They are my wings, I fly because of them.

How were you able to balance both studies and the glam world?

Besides being outstanding in the academic field, I have always been passionate about acting and being a part of the glam world. So even while pursuing studies, I used to be actively involved in different aspects of the creative field. I am a trained actor and a dancer too.

Balancing the two different fields altogether was certainly challenging, but then I utilised every second of my time and put in extra hard work to make it possible.

If you are passionate about something, you will have the drive and the willpower to pursue it and will enjoy every second of your work.

You have been a topper throughout then how come you opted for a career in the entertainment world.

I always had a wish to opt for a full-fledged career in the entertainment world and follow my heart. The art of acting gives me immense creative satisfaction and gratification. I am humbled with my academic achievements, at the same time it’s a dream come true for me to get recognition for my talent.

And furthermore, it’s a very respectable profession where your talent gets acclaim and recognition beyond the portraying different lives and borders. roles as an actor, it feels divine.

How did you prepare yourself to face the camera?

Facing and enacting in front of the camera is an ongoing process and you improvise and gain experience with every new day on the set. Also because I am a learner, so I learn every day. Acting to a lot of extent is also inborn and can be polished in due course of time and professionally, when you work you further get to know the technical ni y gri y of the craft. I am a trained actor and dancer and I feel if you are passionate about something, you have an imbibing power to grasp them.

To be successful in this field besides being talented, beautiful, smart, confident one needs to be perseverant and balanced to get the right opportunities to be recognised and be successful.

What were the challenges you faced in this fiercely competitive world?

Mostly the challenge in this field is that as an artiste you may face groupism, there are certain groups which have been formed and they keep on making films with the same set of people and are reluctant to opt for other artistes outside their groups and then of course not being from the filmy background, even inspite of being immensely talented, you initially do not have the right contacts, so sometimes it might take time to get the right stage and platform to showcase your skills. But all in all, challenges are a part of life and when the audiences accept and appreciate your work, that provides motivation and encouragement.

Did you have any fan moment when you saw your favourite star?

I admire many people for the great work they have been doing in their respective fields. I have been a great admirer of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s songs and it was a great moment when I got the opportunity to see him perform ‘live’ and meet him personally and interact with him thereafter the show. He is blessed with immense talent, divinity in his art and is extremely humble.

Please tell us about your films, videos, etc.

My recently released song ‘Matwaliye’ with Satinder Sartaaj has garnered a lot of appreciation all over. My performance in the recently released film ‘Khatre Da Ghuggu’ also a racted immense recognition. There are several upcoming projects in 2021. My Bollywood film as a lead actress ‘Krispy Rishtey’ shall release soon. The details will be shared by the team shortly and the rest of the projects will be revealed as the year unfolds.

You are also running an NGO tell us about it?

I am the founder of Dream Buds Foundation. The foundation has undertaken several initiatives to fulfil the dreams of the poor and to provide relief and support during Covid 19 pandemic and also got recognition from Panjab Government for its philanthropic endeavours.

Any message for the youngsters who would like to enter the film world.

Yes, follow your dream, passion and heart to be a part of the film world and work hard to achieve your aim. Believe in yourself and your talent and be positive, perseverant, consistent and enthusiastic towards your art, you will surely get the due recognition. Also I feel youngsters need to be very strong and emotionally balanced in this profession since it’s a competitive world and you encounter ups and downs, but if you possess all the above qualities, you will

get through strong and get the due credit for your work.

What do you think would have been your career if you had not entered the glamour world?

If I wouldn’t have been an actor professionally, I would have loved to be associated and work with United Nations, since academically I have studied Human Rights, Public Policy and International Development and above all working for humanity gives me immense gratification. Any work that helps me contribute my bit towards the be erment of society shall be my outright choice.

hen the crew of the James Bond film ‘Octopussy’ landed at Udaipur in 1982 for the shoot, the locals were naturally mesmerised by the suave Roger Moore and pre y lass Maud Adams.

But there was someone else who was the cynosure of all eyes too. A handsome bearded actor wearing a ‘Bandgala’ and matching turban. One could have easily mistaken him for a Indian prince watching the shooting, until he moved to the shout of ‘Action’ by the director John Glen. It was then that truth dawned on everybody that

he was Kabir Bedi and was playing a notable role in the film.

The turbaned Kabir Bedi played the role of Gobinda who was the antagonist's henchman and his was not a 'blink-andmiss' appearance as he had many engaging scenes in the hit film. For the western audience, it was a novelty to see a man sporting a turban confronting James Bond.

However, Kabir Bedi's tryst with foreign films got him instant stardom in 1976, when he played the lead in Sandokan, a six-part mini-series for European television directed

by Sergio Sollima. He played the role of a Robinhood-type pirate who is basically an

Interestingly till date, many Sikh gentlemen walking on the streets of rural Italy still get called 'Sandokan' by the locals. Besides this, he also played roles in hit Hollywood TV Series 'Bold and Beautiful', 'Knightrider', 'Magnum P.I.' , 'The Far Pavilions', 'Dynasty', 'On Wings of Eagles' , 'Desert Law', 'Buck James' and many other films. We can without a doubt call him the first Punjabi global star.

Michael Ondaatje's acclaimed book 'The English Patient' was made into a film in 1996 by Tiger Moth Productions and distributed by Miramax Studios. The feature film was set during the final days of the Italian campaign during World War II. The story was about a French-

Canadian nurse Hana (played by Julie e Binoche) working and living in a bombed Italian monastery, looking after a critically burned man who speaks English, but cannot remember his name. Both of them are later joined by Kip Singh (played by Naveen Andrews), a Sikh Sapper in the British Army who defuses bombs and has a love affair with Hana before leaving. The movie was a big hit and appreciated by the audience and above all, Naveen Andrews got nominated for the prestigious 'Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture'.

Who doesn't know about Sir Ben Kingsley, who at the age of 39 played the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the Academy award winning film 'Gandhi'. He also won the Academy award for 'Best Actor' for the same film. Of Gujarati descent, Ben has since then charmed audiences across the planet by playing varied characters across all genres of film. Be it the scheming Nizam in the 'King of Persia' or Trevor Sla ery in 'Iron Man 3' to the memorable I hak Stern, Sir Kingsley has done it all.

In his 2014 film, 'Learning to Drive' he played the role of Durwan Singh, a turbaned New York taxi driver ba ling demons of his own. His role was applauded both by viewers and critics alike and his is the most recent example of a turbaned hero who grabbed the a ention of all worldwide. Above all, the western world also got a chance to learn more about the Sikh faith and way of life. We at BalleBolly, salute them all for their contribution.

emember the song Collaborations that created quite a stir not just for its unique flavour but also for the melancholic voice of a singer from across the border. This song was an effort by Sukshinder Shinda who along with the great Gurdas Mann created this unique collaboration with the Kinne Kinne Jaana Billo De Ghar singer Abrar-ul-Haq. Quite expectedly this song was a huge hit and is still remembered by many till date. Abrar burst onto the Punjabi music scene in 1995 with his debut album Billo De Ghar and it sold more than 40.3 million copies worldwide.

Encouraged by the success of his first album, he released his second one titled Majajni in 1997. His third album Beh Ja Cycle Te was released in 1999. His fourth album, Asaan Jaana Mall-o-Mall was released in 2002. His fifth album Nachan Main Audhay Nall Nall was released in 2004. Abrar-ulHaq's last album Naara Sadha Ishq Aey was released in March 2007.

His fame as a singer had spread far and wide and soon Sukh Shinda got him and Gurdas Mann together for the path-breaking single Collaborations which had an equally

swanky video to match.

This success led to another single called Aithhe Rakh which was a duet with Sukh Shinda. Quite expectedly, this song again became the cynosure of all eyes and his work along that of Shinda was highly appreciated by critics and listeners alike.

It is pertinent to mention that other than music, Abrar-ul-haq also founded a charitable organization SAHARA which is an abbreviation of "Services Aimed at Health and Awakening in Remote Areas". Its aim is to promote health and education in remote areas. Abrar-ul-Haq also founded a hospital in Narowal.

Today he is a popular singerpolitician and working for the society and trying to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged.

Tell us something about yourself?

Throughout my childhood and college years, I have been drawn to two related art forms—theater and film—both of which seek to move, provoke, or entertain people by means of a story told in dramatic form, albeit in very different ways.

My deep-seated involvement with theatre started when I was a child in school and I participated in a performance of Peter Pan. Although I didn’t get to perform on stage, I remember being fascinated by the actors — their tiny variations in dialogue delivery, their larger than life performances, and their ability to inhabit the skin of different characters. Five years later, I played the role of Shenzi (one of the hyenas) in a

performance of The Lion King, a role that gave me the confidence to recognize and pursue my passion. Born and brought up around professional English Theatre in Chandigarh, North India, and pursuing my undergraduate degree in Manipal, South India, my world view expanded, after observing many kinds of India in one India.

Being part of classics like The Mousetrap, Mother’s Day, The Night of January 16 and 12 Angry Jurors, I learned, grew and fell in love with performing arts.

In Manipal, I co-founded a production house, UnTied Laces. This was followed by various projects, across different genres, where I contributed as a writer, cinematographer, director, editor and actor including a music video in collaboration with the non-profit, Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD) that sought to inspire and mobilize more men to stand up.

Your journey into films Currently, I’m a teaching assistant to my screenwriting professor at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia.

My short documentary, Kya dekh raha hai?

(What are you looking at?) fetched me a Student EMMY ® and 9 International film festival selections. All through my film making journey at SCAD, I acted in pilots, thesis films, for SCAD and Columbia University, New York.

In 2019, I ran a successful crowd funding campaign for my thesis film — Stardust. I was 1 of 10 finalists selected for the Film Impact Georgia Grant.

Motivation to make documentaries My most recent film is about women leaders breaking the shackles of patriarchy and inculcating the pursuit of knowledge and growth to men and kids in a local community in India in Badlaav Republic based in a small town — Khuda Lahora in Chandigarh, India. The film revolves around Manju — a woman who successfully breaks the shackles of patriarchy to do what she truly loves. This, juxtaposed with utopic moments of children at the afternoon school library, celebrating India’s Independence Day showcases the internal power of the community in evolving the curious beings for generations to come.

The genesis of the film began when I shot an after-movie for India’s first ever Photobook Festival — Kitab. We shot at numerous locations and one of them was the stitching station. The inspiring stories of the women drove me back here time and again. I knew I had to narrate Manju’s transformation to the world. Henceforth, Badlaav Republic was born.

Journey as a film maker Before the pandemic, 2020 began on a powerful note. I acted as the antagonist in a Columbia University thesis film, Mabrook (currently in the festival circuit). I got cast as

the lead in SCAD’s Pilot production — What Remains of Emily while simultaneously, I was directing and producing my thesis film — Stardust.

I have been working on a series based somewhat on personal experiences but more so on the International student gaze and VISA status issues called Browny Points. The Pilot screenplay was a finalist at the Oregon Short Film Festival and Houston Comedy Film Festival.

The Future Once I started acting in high school balancing out mathematics and science, I understood the value of acting in my life. It became synonymous to breathing. Through experiences in street plays, stage plays and shorts in Manipal I succeeded and failed but grew immensely because of the amount of time I put in with friends who became family.

It is only after I began my MFA at SCAD, is when I let go of the film-goer hat and replaced it with the filmmaker hat, breaking down classics and investing time in reading and writing. Through this last part, I started meditating and realized the value of deep rest; looking at my career as a marathon and not a sprint.

PALDI

This town included an IndoCanadian community, and in 1973-1974 ‘Paldi’ was the only Sikh enclave of any kind in all of Canada. Mayo Singh had founded the town, naming it aſter his village Paldi, Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

he quaint li le town of 'Paldi' near Duncan on Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC) was founded by Mayo Singh (Orginal name Maeyya Singh) who arrived by ship at San Francisco in 1906. His elder brother Ganea and cousin Doman Singh were in B.C. working for the Canadian Pacific Railway and made up the workforce at the Fernridge Lumber Company at Rosedale near Chilliwack.

In 1912, the Fernridge mill went broke while Mayo and 35 others continued living in the

bunkhouses and eventually took over running the mill and named the new se lement as ‘Paldi’ a name that became synonymous with the good old days of logging in BC and was a Sikh hamlet where Mayo Singh had helped more than 1,500 Punjabis, Sikhs and Chinese to se le down and be part of the then thriving lumber industry.

The first gurudwara there was opened by the Punjabi se lers in Paldi in 1917 and it was renovated in 1928. The town soon took on the atmosphere of a village in Punjab with the Sikh

Temple in the centre. It quickly became a home away from home in a foreign country. This was particularly comforting to those who spoke li le English. As time moved on, the town of ‘Paldi’ became a unique cultural mixture of East Indian, Japanese, Chinese and Whites.

Now, the gurudwara stands as a major landmark of ‘Paldi’. Nearby, are roads named as Jindo, Bishan, Rajeet etc., maybe named after some of Mayo’s relatives.
