PHL seeks U.S. help to recover Napoles assets MANILA, Oct 10 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine government will formally request the assistance of the United States government, through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), in verifying the properties of the family of businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles there, and as part of efforts to recover these assets in the future. Justice Secretary Leila De Lima confirmed this to reporters, but refused to further give details, except to say that the Philippine government has made initial arrangements and coordination with the U.S. government on the Napoles properties. “Mayroon namang mga method on asset recovery. Unang pinapa-verify namin: ilan ang properties, ano ang value ng properties, and how to proceed against those properties. “So depende sa legal mechanisms of the U.S. government...We have a US-Philippines MLAT and this is what we normally utilize when we want to seek assistance from them (U.S.),” De Lima said. The justice chief, however, admitted that nothing can stop the Napoleses from disposing of their properties abroad since there is no conviction against them yet by a court of law in connection See RECOVER ASSET, page 12

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM – President Benigno S. Aquino III listens to United States Secretary of State John Kerry during the 1st ASEAN – U.S. Summit at the Muzakarah Hall, Brunei International Convention Center in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam last Oct. 9 at the sidelines of the 23rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

U.S. warns citizens in PHL due to ‘credible’ threats’ MANILA, October 10, 2013 (AFP) – The United States warned its citizens Thursday of a “series of credible security threats” in the restive southern region of the Philippines, where a Muslim insurgency has raged for decades. The warning came on the eve of a planned visit to Manila by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, although embassy officials declined to comment on whether the warning would affect the trip. Kerry is not scheduled to visit the areas mentioned in the warning, according to his official schedule released by the Philippine foreign department. “Individuals associated with known extremist and insurgent groups are believed to have been conducting surveillance on a number of public locations in these areas, as possible targets of interest,” the US embassy in Manila said in an emergency message. These include “high-profile sporting events, residential areas, business offices, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas, and other destinations, whether frequented by foreigners or locals”. It added: “Extremists may elect to use conventional or nonconventional weapons, and target both official and private interests.” As a result, the embassy said it was restricting travel by US government staff to certain parts of the southern region of Mindanao. The embassy warning named Davao, Mindanao’s largest city, and four Mindanao provinces, including areas not known as hotbeds of insurgency. Tens of thousands of Americans live in the Philippines, a former US colony, including some who stay in parts of Mindanao that are not usually affected by insurgencies.

MANILA, October 10, 2013 (AFP) – A young Philippine woman who drew outrage after posting pictures online of her lavish lifestyle including one showing her bathing in money is to be charged with tax evasion, officials said Thursday. Jeane Napoles, whose mother is currently being investigated over one of the country’s biggest corruption scandals, earned widespread derision for her social media posts featuring flashy cars and a swanky condominium in the U.S. “We read the newspapers. We follow the Internet. That is where we heard about her,” said Bureau of Internal Revenue chief Kim Henares. Government investigators allege Napoles’ mother Janet, a See LAVISH LIFESTYLE, page 12

Leticia Shahani, et al: Create Truth Commission vs pork abuses MANILA, Oct 9 (Mabuhay) – Calls for the abolition of the pork system have further snowballed, this time with the women sector led by former Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani group seeking for a Truth Commission to look deeper into the “systematic” problem of the country. In a statement, The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Foundation urged President Benigno Aquino III to appoint private individuals with unquestionable integrity, probity and independence to the Truth Commission. “While we have faith in our investigative and prosecutorial agencies’ capacity to perform their duties with fidelity, we recognize that some administration officials and allies have been implicated in the scam, such that the integrity of the institutional processes at work in this matter have been called into question,” the group said. They said the Truth Commission will look into the pork barrel system and how it “makes thievery of public funds possible.” They said the commission will check the extent of the abuse and also “provide a set of recommendations for the reform of our political governance, budgeting, and fiscal administration systems.” The group said it is about time that the system is abolished. They also asked for better transparency and accountability from the government. They said the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill is, thus, paramount. See COMMSSION, page 12

Kerry postpones PHL visit, citing storm BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, October 10, 2013 (AFP) – Secretary of State John Kerry announced Thursday he was postponing a visit to U.S. ally the Philippines due to a tropical storm, in the latest setback to US efforts to engage Asia. Kerry, who had been drafted in to take over President Barack Obama’s cancelled trip through Asia, blamed the cancellation on Tropical Storm Nari, which is bearing down on the northeastern Philippines.

“Because of the judgment of our pilots... and the approaching typhoon, we are going to postpone the trip that I was going to make to the Philippines,” Kerry told reporters on the sidelines of an Asian summit in Brunei. Obama was forced to pull out of planned trips to Malay-

sia, the Philippines and back-to-back regional summits in Indonesia and Brunei due to the US budget crisis, sending Kerry in his stead. The U.S. budget impasse has caused the first government shutdown in 17 years and raised fears the country could default on its massive global debts. The situation has left the U.S. scrambling to reassure Asian allies that it is committed to its self-described rebalancing of economic and strategic attention towards Asia. “I’m sorry not to be there in the next day or so but the good news is I am absolutely committed to returning in a month or so,” Kerry said of the Philippine cancellation. “I’m coming back to the region and I look forward to visiting... our friends in the Philippines.”

Kerry had been due to arrive in the Philippines Friday after his visit to Malaysia starting later Thursday. He made his announcement at a press appearance with Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, who expressed regret. “We regret the postponement of Secretary Kerry’s visit to Manila,” he said. “We, of course, are eager to welcome Secretary Kerry.” Nari was expected to make landfall Saturday on the northeastern coast of the main Philippine island of Luzon, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of the capital Manila. On Thursday it was packing maximum winds of 120 km (75 miles) per hour and bringing heavy rain and strong winds to large parts of the archipelago nation.

MNLF spokesman: Nur Misuari, Habier Malik won’t surrender MANILA, Oct 10 (Mabuhay) – Just like Moro National Liberation Front commander Habier Malik, MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari will not surrender even after warrants for their arrest have been issued. “I don’t think he (Misuari) is going to surrender because ang mga rebolusyonaryo po ay hindi nila ugali ‘yung mag-aklas pagkatapos [ay] mag-surrender. Malimit po tatapusin nila ‘yung kanilang balak,” Reverend Absalom Cerveza, MNLF Misuari faction spokesman, said. Cerveza also said he last spoke with Misuari “the other day.” Arrest warrants were issued against Misuari, Malik and two others by a local court in Zamboanga City for placing the city under siege for almost a month, causing the death of over 200 people – civilians, soldiers and rebels. Cerveza said the effects of the crisis were “unfortunate” but said the MNLF had a valid cause aligned with valid reasons. He also confirmed that Misuari whom he last talked with on Tuesday was still in an undisclosed place in the

Philippines. Cerveza said Misuari told him over the phone, “Wala akong magawa kung ano ang gustong gawin ng gobyerno. Gagawin ko rin kung ano ‘yung kaya kong gawin.” When asked if Misuari is willing to have his case heard in Manila for security reasons, Cerveza said there wasn’t much they could do and that ultimately it’s the court that will decide their fate. “’Pag nahuli ka, wala kang magagawa kung saan ka man lilitisin... Bahala na ‘yung mga abogado,” he said adding, “Wherever... kung mahuli.” Cerverza also confirmed that Malik, the elusive MNLF ground commander believed to have led the attack in Zamboanga City on September 9, was still alive. “Yes, he’s much alive,” he said, adding that he last talked to Malik four days ago. According to Cerveza, Malik already escaped government forces in Zamboanga City. “Wala na... He’s in some place na hindi natin puwede sabihin,” he said. The encounters between government forces and the MNLF lasted for three weeks and claimed over 200 lives.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin announced the crisis officially over on Sept. 28, but clearing operations have continued to root out MNLF rebels still holed up in the city. Misuari in Sulu? Zamboanga City mayor Beng Climaco said, “I think [Misuari] is in Sulu, so it is the military authorities that are taking over.” “But definitely, the city of Zamboanga extends whatever we can in terms of personnel to really bring about justice to the people... to those who have died, those who have lost homes, those who are still suffering double in the tragedy. Asked if she favors the idea that the case against Misuari and his group be tried in Metro Manila, Climaco said, “Definitely, we welcome it because we have the detainees [captured MNLF rebels] here right now in San Ramon and as well as jails in Zamboanga. The residents do not feel comfortable with them being here. And I have written a petition to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima so that the [trials] will be held outside the city of Zamboanga. (MNS)

Ciara Sotto: My father is clean from pork barrel scam MANILA, Oct 10 (Mabuhay) – TELEVISION personality Ciara Sotto said conspirators of the pork barrel mess should be held accountable in the alleged misuse of the priority assistance development fund (PDAF). The daughter of Senator Vicente Sotto III initially wanted to refrain from giving comments on multi-billion scam linked to some members of Congress, but said she hopes the truth will come out. “Mahirap naman na magsinungaling sa taong bayan. Kung ano yung totoo, sana ‘yun yung talagang lumabas,” she said. Ciara said it’s a “blessing” that her father is not among those named in the complaint filed by the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation at the Office of the Ombudsman. “Ang daddy ko never naman siyang nagka-issue about corruption ever since vice mayor pa siya. Kasi he’s really an honest person.” Ciara said. She also denied the allegations made by Senator Jinggoy Estrada against the husband of her cousin, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, who allegedly benefited from his PDAF. “I don’t think it’s true kasi si Kuya Kiko (former senator Francis Pangilinan) and my Dad are very much the same. Pareho silang honest people. So, I think hindi totoo na may problem si Kuya Kiko,” said Ciara. Meantime, Ciara is set for a television comeback via the upcoming primetime series “Madam Chairman” starring the Megastar Sharon Cuneta. According to the 33-year-old actress, she’s happy to be back on television and to work opposite her cousin. Ciarra was also asked to clarify reports that her marriage with husband Jojo Oconer is currently on the rocks. According to reports, the two separated because of issues on their prenuptial agreement.

EU, Swiss aid to teach OFWs to save MANILA, October 10, 2013 (AFP) – The European Union said Thursday it would help fund a project to encourage the families of millions of Filipino overseas workers to save money and use it to develop their home towns. While Filipino expatriates remitted close to 1.03 trillion pesos ($23.8 billion) to the Philippines last year, only a trickle went into savings accounts, according to United Nations, EU and Filipino officials at the project launch. “If you look at the Philippines, it’s obvious that migration has been a tremendous success story and is driving the economy and its growth...

although it has also some issues that need to be addressed, said Hans Farnhammer, operations chief of the EU delegation to the Philippines. Rebeca Grynspan, associate administrator for the UN Development Program, said the Philippines was one of eight countries supplying labor overseas that would get funding over the next three years under an $10 million global “migration and development initiative. The Philippine program, expected to cost about $900,000, will be funded by the EU and Switzerland and run by the Philippine government’s Commission on

Filipinos Overseas. The commission will hire non-government organizations to help local governments design financial training programs for the families of about 10.4 million Filipinos who live abroad, the commission’s head Imelda Nicolas told reporters. While remittances have helped improve lives in a country that suffers from widespread poverty, Nicolas said just three to five percent of the money went into savings. “That’s very insignificant, she said,

adding the bulk was spent on food, medical expenses and tuition fees for their children in school. “We have to teach the families left behind how to save, how to plan for the future. When they (family members working abroad) decide to retire they’ll have savings and investments that they could live on. The training modules would also teach families of overseas workers where to invest their savings so they could be used to develop their communities, she added.

Philippine government is ready for any backlash stemming from its decision not to apologize to Hong Kong for the 2010 Manila hostage crisis, including the possible ban of Filipino domestic helpers there. Interviewed in Brunei late Wednesday where he was attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and other summits, President Benigno Aquino III said Hong Kong has a right to come up with any decision regarding Filipino workers. “Kung ano ang kilos nila doon sa ating mga workers, siyempre may kalayaan silang desisyunan kung ano ang gusto nila sa lipunan nila, he said. “Palagay ko naman nakahanda rin ang DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment). Aquino made the statement following reports that a political party in Hong Kong is planning to push a bill that will ban Fili-

to force Aquino to apologize for the 2010 Manila hostage tragedy that left eight Hong Kong tourists dead. Aquino was quick to note that he is not challenging the Hong Kong government with this statement. “Kung sasabihin naman parang hinahamon ko sila, hindi ko sinasabi yun. Pero ang gobyerno itinatag para pangalagaan ang lahat ng mga mamamayan natin. So kung sino ang namomoblema, sino ang may kailangan ng kalinga, dapat nakahanda ang gobyerno all the time, he said. Aquino, in Bali, Indonesia, earlier this week, met with Hong Kong Chief Executive C.Y. Leung but did not offer an apology for the 2010 incident. He said he expressed to Leung his regret for what happened but said he cannot apologize for something they are not directly responsible for.

Aquino gov’t fails in most transparency commitments – report MANILA, Oct 10 (Mabuhay) – Despite the Aquino government’s “Daang Matuwid” policy, the Philippines has only completed three of its 19 commitments to ensure an open and transparent government. This is based on the Independent Reporting Mechanism of the Philippine commitments to the Open Government Partnership - a voluntary initiative that aims to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies. The results were announced in a briefing by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism today. Of the 19, the Philippines has only completed its commitments to: local poverty reduction by collaborating with local governments and community organizations to develop at least 300 local poverty reduction action plans; results-based performance by increasing compliance with the seal of good housekeeping to 70% by 2016 and link to grants; and, harmonized performance based management systems. On the other hand, the government has limited completion of its commitments to:

False bomb alert snarls traffic in Manila MANILA, October 9, 2013 (AFP) – A false bomb alert snarled traffic in much of the Philippine capital Wednesday, as police stopped vehicles travelling on a major road while trying to defuse what they thought may be an explosive device. The backpack containing the alleged bomb was found to hold nothing more than dirty clothes and other assorted items, the police investigator handling the case said. “It was just old clothes and junk. The bomb report was negative,” he told AFP. The backpack was hurled by a man on an overhead footbridge onto the roof of a passing commuter bus on Manila’s main thoroughfare at about 5pm. The bus driver halted the vehicle and summoned the police, who stopped traffic on both sides of the highway, causing a massive traffic jam that stretched for kilometers (miles). A bomb-sniffing dog sent in by the police was seen sitting by the bag, indicating that it had smelled explosives. However an x-ray of the bag could not find any detonator and an explosives expert later confirmed there was no bomb. Valdez said a witness reported that the bag may have been hurled onto the bus during a botched robbery as the owner and a suspected thief were struggling over it. He did not believe the incident was intentional attempt to cause panic, but said the owner of the bag has yet to be located. Four hours after the road was closed, vehicles were allowed to pass the thoroughfare once more. Commuter buses in the Philippines

At the same time, it also noted substantial completion with commitments to: the access to information initiative; citizens’ charters; internal audit; electronic bidding; expand the national household targeting system; the “E-tails” or expand the electronic transparency and accountability initiative for lump sum funds; and, the Budget ng Bayan - a people’s budget website. The same progress report noted that the departments of agriculture, agrarian reform, education and justice and the Presidential Communications Operations Office did not comply with the commitment to a new power to secure the release of valuable datasets. It also noted the failed passage of the Freedom of Information bill as hampering the commitment to the access to information initiative.

Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass media Chair Grace Poe, whose panel already sponsored the Senate ‘s FOI bill for plenary deliberation, said: “It is in this area of the Report that we want to assist in terms of compliance. And good signs and optimism may be deduced in the actions and progress of the FOI legislation in the Philippine Senate in the last few weeks…By standard, the action may be considered as swift.” On the other hand, Poe hopes that transparency advocates can lobby at the House of Representatives, where the various FOI bills have been stuck since the opening of the 16th Congress. Poe said she will seek a meeting with her counterpart at the lower House - Public Information panel head Rep. Jorge Almonte. Poe acknowledged that the administration has gradually started to implement reforms when it comes to transparency. However, she also said, “little by little we’re putting things out there… still not perhaps in the position where we’d like to be. We’d like to have actionable data available not after the fact… this is something the FOI will guarantee.” (MNS)

Malaysia launches ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2014’ in Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA – Malaysia’s newly appointed Minister of Tourism and Culture, the Honorable Dato’ Seri Mohamed

Nazri Abdul Aziz, revealed plans for the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 campaign at The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey on Tuesday.

In a press conference, the Minister announced details of events taking place in Malaysia throughout 2014, and discussed the wide impact which Visit Malaysia Year 2014 is expected to have on Malaysia’s tourism industry and economy. Visit Malaysia Year 2014 is a global campaign that will be heavily promoted in key markets including the U.S. The campaign aims to attract 28 million tourists to the country next year, with a target of 248,500 American tourists. In his address, the minister announced the launch of a more user-friendly website and Facebook page for Tourism Malaysia USA. The new website features a dedicated landing page for Truly Asia TV, a

The minister also explained that Visit Malaysia Year 2014 will be based on four experiential themes which highlight the diverse attractions in Malaysia. These themes are: Heritage & Culture, Adventure & Nature, Wellness & Spa, and Island & Beaches. The minister’s sales mission to Los Angeles concluded with cultural performances and entertainment for the guests that included the Dance Cultural Troupe from Malaysia. The highlight of the performances was a dance by Minister Aziz himself on a song by Filipino artist Christine Love who performed with her band.

businesswoman, helped members of the Philippine parliament embezzle 10 billion pesos ($230 million) in government funds. Three opposition senators as well as former president Gloria Arroyo, who is in jail for election fraud and graft, are among those swept up in the investigation and could face criminal charges for misuse of funds. The corruption scandal prompted thousands to march in the streets in massive rallies against graft. Prior to the scandal, 23-year-old Jeane Napoles regularly took to Tumblr, Instagram and YouTube to document her highflying lifestyle. But after Filipino newspapers in June broke the news about her mother’s alleged links to corruption, her posts drew anger in the impoverished country where many believe a few families are enriching themselves unfairly. Napoles deactivated her social media accounts but her photos and videos had already become viral.

Henares said the tax evasion complaint against Napoles was not linked to the corruption allegations against her mother. The bureau cited a Los Angeles condominium that the daughter allegedly acquired for 54.73 million pesos ($1.27 million) in 2011, and a Philippine property she bought in 2012. A student studying fashion design, the young woman had not filed any income tax returns, itself evidence of tax evasion, according to Henares. “We have always said there is nothing wrong with being rich as long you pay the right taxes,” the official added. Janet Napoles, her mother, was detained in August for allegedly detaining an aide who later blew the whistle on her alleged role in embezzling state funds. Henares denied any political motive in prosecuting the daughter and said she was merely enforcing tax laws. “Whether it is her fault or her mother’s fault, someone will go to jail,” said Henares.

poles PDAF scam is generating, nakakarating din naman yan sa U.S. at yung mga kababayan natin doon, vigilant sila,” she said. The Philippine government is also undertaking efforts to locate Napoles properties in other countries. (MNS)

and legally. Gov. Brown also signed into law several other bills that provide added protections to the immigrant community. The TRUST Act limits the ability of state and local police officers from detaining individuals charged with minor crimes. Only those arrested for serious offenses may be detained and transferred to federal authorities for potential removal proceedings. Another bill, AB 524, prevents employers from threatening employees about reporting them to the DHS should they complain about workplace violations. Yet another bill, SB66, allows an employer’s business license to be revoked or suspended should they retaliate against a worker based on immigration status. These laws honor the contributions that the immigrant community has had throughout California. The drivers license law recognizes not only the humane treatment that the immigrant population should be afforded, but also the practical and safety concerns to law enforcement and the rest of the community. The other laws seek to

protect those who are so vulnerable of being taken advantage of and ensuring that those who truly wish to help the immigrant community are not displaced by those who simply wish to profit from them. For example, once you’re 90 days late, reduction of the debt amount and pay

If you don’t feel confident dealing with creditors yourself, you may be tempted to hire a debt settlement company to avoid the expense of hiring an attorney. Don’t do it! Remember that a debt settlement company cannot legally represent you if you are sued and thus, they cannot protect your legal rights. Also keep in mind that some creditors will flat out inform you that they refuse to work with a debt settlement company and if this happens, that means you leave them no other option but to file a lawsuit against you! I have seen a lot of unscrupulous debt settlement companies who misrepresent their services to the public and offer false hopes to unsuspecting consumers who are desperate for a solution. A lot of these debt settlement companies do not clearly explain to you how their debt settlement program works before they ask you to sign

a contract with them. Their advertising sounds so good and once you call them, they tell you nothing but lies just to suck you in. They do not tell you anything about the potential downfalls of hiring them and often make big promises that they cannot deliver. Be careful in hiring a debt settlement company or you may end up in a worse situation with your credit with no solution to your debt problems. If you pass away with at least $150,000 in gross assets and you do not have a living trust (even if you have a will), your beneficiaries would have to open up a probate case before title to the assets can pass to them. When I say gross asset, I mean regardless of how much debt you owe on them. For example if you own a house valued at $850,000 at the time of your death, it does not matter that your mortgage balance is 800,000, a probate case has to be opened in order to pass title to that property. The same is true with other types of assets such as owning a business, a professional practice, bonds, equities, etc. This is a very low threshold to exceed specially in California where real estate prices, even after the economic crisis, remains in the upper end of the curve among the 50 states. Commencing a probate case is expensive and a very slow process. Someone qualified will have to file a Petition with the probate court to have someone appointed as executor or administrator. gross estate. The probate referee will have to be paid for appraising the assets of the estate. If it is necessary to post bond, the premium on the bond would have to be paid as well. There is also the cost of administering the estate such as selling some of the assets to satisfy the estate’s obligations and to divide the estate according to the will or the intestate line of succession if there is no will. The entire process could take up years specially if certain beneficiaries and creditors file certain claims. The probate court file would be public record. On the other hand if you have a revocable trust, your estate can avoid the entire court system and court supervision. In certain situations, the process may also save you estate taxes which may be substantial if your assets exceed a certain threshold. Basically, you and/or your spouse can be named as the initial trustee of the trust while you are alive. The trustee is the person who manages the trust. This means you retain control of all your assets the same way as if you never had a trust. For revocable trusts, you can later on, at any time during your lifetime, revoke the entire trust if you change your mind. The assets held in your living trust will be managed by the trustee and distributed according to your directions without court supervision and involvement when you pass away. This can save your heirs time and money. Since the trust would not be under the direct management of the probate court, your assets and their value and your beneficiaries’ identities would not become a public record. Your heirs and beneficiaries would still have to be notified about the living trust and advised, among other things, of their right to obtain a copy of the trust. If you recently got divorced or

had a marriage annulled, you should have a new estate plan (wills and trust) set up to save on estate taxes, save on probate and administration cost, and make it more convenient for your beneficiaries to inherit from your estate. OPINION

PHL strong enough to handle impact of U.S. financial troubles: Aquino

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM, Oct 10 (Mabuhay) – A potential U.S. financial meltdown is unlikely and in case it happens, the Philippines is prepared to handle it, President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Wednesday. “There are these several steps that have been done by both the economic cluster and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and they can explain the technical... the technical aspects of how we are cushioning the effects,” the President during an interview by the Philippine media at the Philippine Embassy here Wednesday. “The world’s biggest economy turns belly up, how can you actually protect yourself? But I don’t think that will happen,” he added. The President said even U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that this is just an excess of politics in the U.S. and every American politician knows the consequences of a prolonged government shut down and a default. For his part, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the default is something that is unthinkable, but nevertheless, the Philippine government is preparing for any eventuality by making sure that the country is in a flexible position such as in its liquidity position. “Everyone’s affected, as the President said. But the good thing about the Philippines is that our OFWs are all over the world not just in the U.S.,” Secretary Purisima noted. “Our BPO industry becomes stronger when times become difficult because of the need to become more competitive and more efficient, and then tourism is increasingly becoming an important consideration,” he added. The credit risk of the country has also improved as a result of recent investment rating upgrades, Purisima said. “In fact, when we did the auction the other day, we borrowed at a lower cost than the U.S. for the first time. This is an anomaly but it was – we borrowed for 90 days at one basis point; the U.S. borrows at two basis points,” he added. President Aquino also said that in times of turmoil, investors try to find safe harbor, and bringing their money to the Philippines is better because of the country’s more stable financial environment. End of the road as U.S. Supreme Court denies Fil-Am vets’ petition

Los Angeles – The US Supreme Court denied the petition for writ of certiorari for Case 4.10 CV-04542 SBA Recinto vs. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). The Supreme Court would have been the last chance to reverse the decision of Court of Appeals in California denying full benefits as full Americans veterans to some 40,000 surviving Filipinos who fought during WW II. Systemic Racism By its decision, the Supreme Court codified into law the brazen systemic racism that has been perpetrated against the veterans and the Filipino-American community,” said Commander Regalado, veterans’ affairs commissioner of San Francisco and member of the Justice for Filipino-American Veterans (JFAV). The Supreme Court Decision came out unfortunately while the Filipino American Community celebrates the Pilipino American History Month and the 76th t year anniversary of the October 20 Leyte Landing also known as the FilipinoAmerican Veterans Recognition Day in the United States. The Supreme Court’s denial for a hearing, simply upheld the decision of Court of Appeals in California in 2012. “The decision implies that the Rescission Act of 1946 superseded the American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) Act of 2009,” said Arturo Garcia, national coordinator of JFAV. The Supreme Court upholds the previ-

ous law that treats Filipino veterans as nationals, not citizens, and therefore do not deserved full rights and benefits. This is gross injustice,” said Regalado. Separate But Equal, Era 2013 Garcia believes that this is the same Supreme Court that upheld the inequities and racism of the “Separate but Equal law” that existed for 78 years. Separate but equal was a legal doctrine in United States constitutional law that justified systems of segregation Under this doctrine, services, facilities and public accommodations were allowed to be separated by race, on the condition that the quality of each group’s public facilities was to remain equal. The phrase was derived from a Louisiana law of 1890, although the law actually used the phrase “equal but separate.” “ It is the same judiciary favoring another branch of the government, the Department of Veterans Administration (DVA) in order not to rock the boat.” Garcia added. ”We have nothing left but to go back to the long struggle of lobbying at the U.S. Congress that has been paralyzed by its own folly- the current shutdown. We still have the Filipino American Veterans Fairness Act of 2013 to fight for at the 113th US Congress.” Garcia said. ”We must remember that we did not surrender with Bataan’s Fall. We waged a three- year war of resistance until the final victory was achieved during World War II,” said John Aspiras, LA-based WW II veteran.

Gov. Brown signs Bonta’s Filipino American Farm Worker Bill, AB 123 New law teaches students on role of Fil-Ams in labor movement (SACRAMENTO, CA) – Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) is proud to announce that Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 123 today – a first-ofits-kind bill to require the state curriculum to include the contributions of Filipino Americans to the farm labor movement in California. Bonta notes that Governor Brown’s signature of the bill is the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of Filipino American History Month, this October. “The goal of AB 123 is to supplement California’s rich farm worker history with the contributions of the Filipino American community. The Filipino American population composes the largest Asian population in California and continues to grow; yet the story of Filipinos and their crucial efforts to the farm labor movement is an untold part of California history,” explained Assemblymember Bonta. “The historical significance of vastly

influential leaders, such as César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, are rightfully synonymous with California’s farm labor movement. Generations of people who follow their stories have benefited from their commitment to social and economic justice in innumerable ways. Missing from the current curriculum are events such as the Delano Grape Strike of 1965, led by the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), which was comprised of first generation Filipino leaders (Philip Vera Cruz and Larry Itliong). A week following this strike, the National Farm Workers Association, led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, combined forces with AWOC and by the fall of 1966, the numbers grew to approximately 2,000---almost entirely Filipino and Mexican workers, joined together in a powerful collaborative movement. The combined forces grew the movement to

approximately 10,000 by 1970. “By signing AB 123, Governor Brown has made an unprecedented move to give students a more complete account of California’s farm labor movement and ensure that these important leaders, such as Philip Vera Cruz and Larry Itliong are remembered by future generations of Californians,” explained Bonta. Dolores Huerta, an iconic social justice and labor rights activist, spoke in support of the bill in committee: “The students of California need to learn that the sacrifices made by both the Filipino and Latino workers benefitted all Californians. AB 123 will ensure that the history is taught accurately.” The bill is particularly important to Assemblymember Bonta because of his personal heritage and history. Bonta was raised as a child in La Paz, the United Farm Workers’ headquarters, where his parents organized Filipino American and Mexican American farm workers. Also, as the first Filipino American elected to the California State Assembly and the Godson of José Gomez, Executive Assistant to César Chávez, Bonta is committed to the cause of farm workers and ensuring that the legacy of

the farm workers is properly taught to the children of California. Bonta concluded, “I am proud that Governor Brown recognizes the contributions of Filipinos to the history of our state and country by signing AB 123 and including them in the history and social sciences curriculum taught in California schools.”

AB 123 will give students a more complete account of California’s farm labor movement and ensure that these important leaders, such as Philip Vera Cruz and Larry Itliong are remembered by future generations of Californians, said Assemblymember Rob Bonta (left).

PALA, CA, October 2, 2014… Filipino pop stars and certified hit makers Joey Albert and Nonoy Zuniga will headline the “Hanep sa Wow” Filipino Music Festival at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, in the Infinity Showroom at Pala Casino Spa & Resort. The festival lineup also will include popular Filipino performers Fe de los Reyes, Eva Caparas and Jet Montelibano of the Music & Magic Showband. Joey Albert and Nonoy Zuniga are both best known for their original timeless classic hits. Ms. Albert is a versatile Filipino pop and jazz singer whose string of timeless hits have become ingrained in Filipino music history. She has enjoyed an award-winning solo career for over 25 years that began when one of her first hits,“Tell Me” received a Gold Record Award from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI), establishing her meteoric rise as a major Filipino musical artist.”Tell Me” became such a mega-hit that other known musical artists, including David Pomeranz, recorded cover versions of the song. Joey’s other hits include “Over and Over,” “A Million Miles Away,” “I Remember the Boy,” “Points of View,” and Tagalog favorites “Yakapin Mo Ako,” “Iisa Pa Lamang,” “Ikaw Lamang Ang Mamahalin,” many of which have been immortalized as theme songs of many blockbuster TV drama series more popularly known as “teleseryes.” Zuñiga’s singing career spans more than three decades, from a folk singer (1971 to 1975) to being one of the lead singers of the Family Birth Control Band performing in the best nightspots and hotels in Manila (1975-1980) to becoming a multi-awarded singer performing solo concerts in the U.S. and various parts of the world including Asia, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China and New Zealand. All his performances from 1983 to the present are well-acclaimed and mostly sold-out shows mainly due to his muchanticipated classic hit ballads like “Never Ever Say Goodbye,” “Kumusta Ka,” “Doon Lang,” “Bituing Walang Ningning,” his upbeat “Magandang Gabi” and other wellloved English standards that perfectly fit his deep baritone vocals. Singer-comedienne Fe de los Reyes, soul singer Eva Caparas and livewire performer Jet Montelibano are original members of the popular show band Music & Magic—one of the few elite singing groups in the ‘80s in the Philippines. They enjoyed extended stints in Singapore and Malaysia and also toured the U.S. and Canada and performed in prestigious venues such as the Shrine Auditorium (Los Angeles) and Carnegie Hall (New York). With their varied repertoire swinging from an“Earth, Wind & Fire Medley” to The Blue Brothers’ “Everybody Needs Somebody”, the Weather Girls’ “Raining Men,” “The Best of Broadway” Medley, “Tagalog Novelty Medley,” and their wellloved anthem “I’ll Be There/Ain’t No Mountain,” the group brings their audiences down memory lane with concept production numbers that only Music & Magic can dish out.

in the accompanying caption of a photo of them together. Other photos showed Evans and Fariñas with her family, and the couple kissing on the lips during what appears to be the wedding reception. The “Muling Buksan ang Puso” actor, who is largely mum on his private life, made headlines in October 2012 when he was accused of his then-girlfriend, Johnelline Hickins, of hurting her. Evans, who denied the allegations, was imprisoned for a day before posting a

P200 bail. A contract artist of ABSCBN’s Star Magic, Evans rose to fame in 2006 as one of the housemates in the first “Teen Edition” of “Pinoy Big Brother.” He went on to star in several TV series, including “Pedro Penduko,” “Kambal sa Uma,” “Rosalka” and “Angelito: Ang Batang Ama.” (MNS)

Matt Evans and his girlfriend, Katrina Fariñas,

Enrique in ‘triangle’ with Bea, Dingdong in new film Enrique Gil said he could not believe that his new big-screen project not only marks his first lead role in a romance film but also features him with box-office stars Bea Alonzo and Dingdong Dantes. A relative neophyte compared to his co-stars in “She’s the One,” Gil said he felt nervous about headlining a film with established actors. At 21, Gil is also younger than Alonzo by three years, and Dantes by 12 years. “Noong unang sinabi sa akin na makaka-triangle ko sina Bea at si Dingdong, ‘What?’ Sabi ko, ‘Grabe ‘to!’ Sabi ko, ‘Wow, teka lang!’” Gil said. Gil said he was particularly nervous about working with Alonzo, who, despite being a fellow Star Magic talent, has been mostly an acquaintance to him. “Actually kahit papaano – noong una talaga kinakabahan ako – when I got to the

set, nakausap ko si Bea. There’s something about her na hindi ka maiilang sa mga eksena,” he recalled. “It’s the way she talks to you, she approaches you. Parang... Bea Alonzo, walang ilang factor lang sa akin. Kaya siguro, swerte lang ako,” he said. As for Dantes, Gil shared they are, in fact, second cousins, “so mas at ease actually.” Having already filmed several scenes with Alonzo and Dantes, Gil said he has become more comfortable with his co-stars, “pero syempre ‘yung mga eksena, dapat bigay-todo pag kasama si Ms. Bea Alonzo.” In the first trailer for “She’s the One,” Gil’s character is seen as a love interest to Cat (Alonzo), who has a complicated relationship with her best friend Joaqui (Dantes).

In an apparent reunion with a group of friends, Cat and Joaqui’s past is brought up with the mention of “tonsil hockey.” The pair then proceeds to argue who kissed who at the time. While the two remain friends, Cat is seen forming a close relationship Gil’s character. This appears to motivate Joaqui to show his true feelings for his best friend. Directed by Mae Cruz (“24/7 In Love,” “Catch Me... I’m in Love”) and written by Vanessa Valdez (“Four Sisters and a Wedding,” “The Mistress”), “She’s the One” will hit theaters nationwide on October 16. The film, which is among producer Star Cinema’s 20th anniversary offerings, also marks the first team-up of Alonzo and Dantes. It is also the GMA-7 actor’s third ABS-CBN movie after “Segunda Mano” and “One More Try.”

Best of Asian cuisine at Dave’s BBQ and Grill Each of the table has a grill, an imposing aluminum vent and a pot in the middle. For some, the pot would give the impression that it’s a shabu-shabu restaurant only to find out that the grill focuses not on Japanese ingredients for the boiling soup stock but of Korean barbecue favorites that everyone loves. But that’s not even the best part. While most shabu-shabu soup in the boiling pot is most likely just plain water, the soup base at Dave’s BBQ and Grill is the famous Tom Yum of Thailand. Add the Thai sauce in there and you’ve got a spicy authentic Tom Yum soup for a real, authentic Thai cuisine. Add the sukiyaki sauce instead of the Thai sauce and you’ve got a Japanese cuisine. Say, again? Actually, David Akrabowon, proprietor of Dave’s BBQ and Grill, said the restaurant is the real Asian fusion. And with noodles, mushroom and other vegetables to choose from, you can add Chinese in the mix for a total Asian food package that is very unique yet diversified. What’s more, the meal is healthy and very inexpensive. As soon as someone walks in, they will not be provided with a menu, which is another first. On the contrary, diners will be led to a wall of adjacent refrigerators where marinated Korean style meat products of beef, chicken and pork are displayed, along with fish, seafood, salad, mixed vegetables and other ingredients in plates, each with its own price that will not cost more than $2.99 each. Yes, just $2.99 each per plate of either Korean Beef (Chicken or Pork) Bulgogi, Beef Kalbi, Beef BBQ, Spicy Beef (again Chicken or Pork), Beef Garlic or Beef Teriyaki. After choosing your plates, you cook your meal yourself, serve yourself and without waiters bothering you all the time if you are doing alright? A plateful is more than enough for one person. Rice is just $1 regardless of the amount, while cold bottled water is free. No kidding, bottled water is free! David said two people can consume a hearty and a really stomach-filling meal for less than $20. Grilling the meat is a snap. But unlike

It’s a shabu-shabu restaurant. No, it’s a Korean barbecue grill. Uh-uh. Actually, it’s a little of everything at Dave’s BBQ and Grill where the best in Asian cuisine is cooked and served…by you. Photo: Rhony Laigo

other Korean grill restaurants, Dave’s BBQ and Grill is equipped with Teflon-based grillers that is fully covered thereby no oil drips in the fire that could result in burnt barbecue, and no sticky and messy oil residue as they can easily be removed from the griller. No dripping oil also reduces smoke virtually giving customers a smoke-free environment and a clean and clear dining experience. “No teary-eyed customers,” David said. David’s unique idea comes from his decades-long food business in Los Angeles where he has been serving the people of Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Hollywood and other neighboring districts from his food truck. “Los Angeles indeed is a melting pot of delicious cuisines,” David said, “so I thought of something where one can enjoy a little of everything that is healthy, nutri-

tious, inexpensive but most importantly tasty and that would cater to everyone.” If you’d like a taste of the real Asian fusion, come check out Dave’s BBQ and

Grill located at 5185 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90027. For more information, please call them at (323) 928-2448. (Rhony Laigo)

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Meeting in the middle: Living a healthy life We often hear from older adults that they want to stay healthy and active in order to do all the things they love, like care for loved ones, spend more time with their families, travel and explore new interests, and, ultimately, live life to the fullest. Having a handle on mental and physical fitness certainly can help bring all of those dreams to life. But whose job is it to keep active and healthy? An AARP survey presented a bit of a contradiction. Most adults agree that when it comes to making decisions about eating healthy, physical activity and managing stress, the individual is responsible. In the same survey, they said that a doctor or health care provider is responsible for telling them what to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle and for following up to ensure that they do. The more realistic notion is that being healthy is a shared responsibility between individuals and their doctors. The first step is looking into your fridge. What do you see? Healthy food includes fruits and vegetAbles. Unfortunately, popular Philippine food in America has skewed toward dishes that are high in carbohydrates, fats and protein

– food that is meant for special occasions like fiestas and celebrations. The every-day Filipino family table can be much healthier. As part of our mission to inspire healthy living, AARP asked popular Bay Area chef Cocoy Ventura to share some recipes that promote healthy living and longevity. With a focus on fresh ingredients that include more vegetables and less protein, these culinary creations satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. precisely. People have different hair conditions, even its shapes and curls are various. Therefore, to do this straight rebonding, we need to KNOW our customer’s hair right. Since this product contains chemicals, we got to be hair doctors. Second: To do Rebonding, since everyone has different hair condition and curls, we use different amount of chemicals for each customer. Our secret technique: we put Japanese PPT treatment before we start doing rebonding to protect your hair. Especially for those of you who have just colored their hair. It’s better if you cut the damaged parts of your hair first. Third: If you have natural hair, which means you didn’t color your hair or permed your hair, we can use regular straight chemicals and all we have to do is set precise

time to make your hair beautiful. However, people who did self-coloring at home, we need to put Collagen mixed with chemicals to make your hair healthy and elastic. To make your hair fabulous and healthy, we need some fancy special products and we must use it to protect your hair. Lastly, if you have serious curls, there is no way you will avoid even a big of damages. Vitamin D supplements may not boost bone strength: study (Relaxnews) – If you regularly pop vitamin D pills to strengthen bones, a new large-scale study suggests spending your money elsewhere. Researchers from the University of Auckland in New Zealand reviewed 23 studies involving 4,082 healthy adults with an average age of 59. Findings showed that those who took vitamin D supplements for about two years didn’t have greater bone density or lower risk of osteoporosis than those who didn’t take them. The studies took place in several countries around the globe, including the UK, US, Norway, Finland, and Australia. Findings were published October 11 in the journal The Lancet. “Our data suggest that the targeting of low-dose vitamin D supplements only to individuals who are likely to be deficient could free up substantial resources that could be better used elsewhere in healthcare,” Dr. Ian Reid, lead study author, said in a statement.

Eight U.S. lawmakers arrested in immigration reform march

Salmonella outbreak sickens nearly 300 in California, 17 other states BY KERRY SHERIDAN

WA S H I N G T O N , O c t o b e r 9 , 2013 (AFP) – An outbreak of salmonella in raw chicken has sickened nearly 300 people in the United States, officials said Wednesday as consumer advocates warned the federal shutdown was hampering a government response. The 278 illnesses in 18 states were believed to be linked to raw chicken from three Foster Farms locations in California, according to the Food Safety Inspection Service. “The outbreak is still ongoing, and therefore our investigation is still ongoing,” a spokesman for FSIS told AFP, noting that 135 inspectors were on duty responding to the outbreak despite the government shutdown. “The only folks that were furloughed were back at our headquarters,” he said. The shutdown, which began October 1, has sent hundreds of thousands of federal workers home without pay, including staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration. It is the first shutdown in 17 years and was driven by a resurgence of Republican opposition to President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law passed in 2010. According to U.S. media reports, the CDC on Tuesday recalled some of its staff

to re-open a network of public health labs that monitor for food-borne outbreaks. An AFP call for comment to the CDC was not immediately returned. The FDA has warned it would “be unable to support the majority of its food safety, nutrition, and cosmetics activities.” “The shutdown has really handcuffed these regulatory agencies and their proper regulatory role,” Eric Walker, spokesman for Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, told AFP. “This is the nightmare scenario, not just with the government shutdown but this is what happens when you overuse antibiotics in livestock.” A high proportion of people have been hospitalized – 42 percent – and some of the salmonella strains are showing resistance to antibiotics, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The consumer advocacy group also noted that seven strains of salmonella appear to be responsible for the sicknesses. “The number of people we know to be ill is just the tip of the iceberg,” said CSPI food safety director Caroline Smith DeWaal. “This outbreak shows that is a terrible time for government public health officials to be locked out of their offices and labs, and for government Web sites to go dark.” Foster Farms said in a statement that

WASHINGTON, October 8, 2013 (AFP) - Eight members of Congress were among several dozen people arrested Tuesday as thousands of protesters converged on the US capital to demand immigration reform. The event resulted in a call by the White House for lawmakers to bridge their differences and “fix our broken immigration system” by allowing stalled legislation to move through the House of Representatives. Police led away several protesters in plastic handcuffs after the marchers blocked a street at the foot of the US Capitol which houses Congress. Organizers for the “Rally and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect” said around 10,000 people turned out for the protest. Protesters called for Congress to approve a swift overhaul of immigration laws which would enable 11 million undocumented workers to come out of the shadows and start a 13-year journey to citizenship. The Democrat-controlled US Senate in June passed the most comprehensive immigration bill in a generation, with bipartisan support. But the Republican-dominated House is drawing up its own piecemeal reforms instead of an overarching bill. Many Republicans consider the Senate bill too lax, and there is opposition within the party to the pathway to citizenship as

no recall is in effect and that “products are safe to consume if properly handled and cooked.” The company also said it had “instituted a number of additional food safety practices,” that have been shown in the past to control salmonella. “Salmonella is naturally occurring in poultry and can be fully eradicated if raw product is properly handled and fully cooked,” said Robert O’Connor, Foster Farms’ food safety chief and head veterinarian. The FSIS warned that salmonella infections “can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.” Common symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of consuming infected food. Illness including nausea, chills and headache may persist for up to a week.

Jesus resurrected His friend Lazarus and the daughter of the widow of Nain. Both had been dead for several days. Jesus resurrected on the third day after His death on the cross! Chapter 3 of the book of Daniel talks about king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon who is credited with making the hanging gardens of Babylon. Babylon is Iran. Nebuchadnezzar made a big golden statue of himself. He gathered all the big shots of Babylon for the dedication of his gold statue. Then a herald announced that once the music played, everyone must fall down and worship the statue. Those who refused would be burned in the furnace immediately. Three Jews, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to do so. Let’s just call them Shad, Mesh and Abe. Someone informed the king that Shad, Mesh and Abe had broken the law and they should be burned. Perhaps this is where Hitler got the idea of burning Jews in the furnace. Nebuchadnezzar commanded that the three Jews be brought before him. He asked them if it was true that they did not worship the gold statue. Shad, Mesh and Abe admitted it was true because they worship only the one true God, Yahweh, the God of Moses and Israel. The king gave them another chance to worship the statue once the music played, or they would be cast into the burning furnace, and “who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?” Shad, Mesh and Abe answered the king that if God desired it, they would be saved from the flames, and if not, they still would not worship the statue. So, Nebuchadnezzar full of fury commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was heated and commanded his strongest soldiers to throw Shad, Mesh and Abe into the furnace.

The three men “fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and said to his counselors, “Did not we cast three men into the midst of the fire? But Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Blessed be the God of Shad, Mesh and Abe Who hath sent His angel, and delivered His servants that trust in Him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.” “Therefore, I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shad, Mesh and Abe, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill (this is much worse than foreclosure): because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort.” Lawrence Bautista Yang is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and has been in law practice for thirty+ years. He specializes in bankruptcy, business and civil litigation and has handled more than four thousand successful bankruptcy cases in California. He speaks Tagalog and looks forward to discussing your case with you personally. laid out in the Senate legislation. Last week, Democrats introduced their own separate bill, a comprehensive measure aimed at keeping the pressure on Republicans to move forward. The protest was largely overshadowed by the political stalemate on Capitol Hill which has kept parts of the federal government shut down for the past week, and sent the US economy careening towards a possible first-ever debt default if Congress does not raise the debt ceiling by October 17. But White House spokesman Jay Carney said the concern over immigration should serve to spur lawmakers into action. “It’s time for the House of Representatives to reopen the government, pay their bills, and get back to the important work of moving the economy forward,” Carney said in a statement. “It is time for House Republicans to put politics aside and join Democrats to fix our broken immigration system and make the economy stronger.” Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez was among those arrested in Tuesday’s symbolic act of civil disobedience, and like Carney he blamed House Republicans for blocking reform. “There are 30 or 40 Republicans— some estimate as many as 85 Republicans in Congress – who support legalization and immigration reform in some form,” Gutierrez said. “They know the power of our vote, they know the popularity of immigration reform, they know the hunger and passion in our community, and yet we still have not seen immigration reform signed into law by the president because other Republicans are holding it up.” Other lawmakers detained included civil rights pioneer John Lewis and reform advocate Raul Grijalva. Many protesters waved American flags or held pro-reform banners and signs. One man wore a black T-shirt which read “I could be illegal.” The event followed a nationwide series of protests Saturday in some 160 cities.

Forex and Gawad Kalinga presents: ‘Indak,’ an all-night disco dance party in Los Angeles Top cargo forwarder Forex and Philippines’ premier non-profit group that builds homes for the homeless Gawad Kalinga have teamed up to present “Indak,” an allnight disco dance party in Los Angeles on November 23 to raise funds for the medical and education needs of the less fortunate Filipino children. The DecaDance, which will be held at MadAve Club in midtown Los Angeles located at 310 N. Madison Avenue, will highlight the music of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Organizers said the dance will feature Boyet Almazan, who “revolutionized the art of Retro disco dancing music back home, where he cleverly spins dance mu-

sic to the rhythm of the decade much like telling a story.” It is said that Almazan’s brand of music creates “euphoria on the dance floor .” DecaDance will be the start of Boyet Almazan’s U.S. tour. Forex President JP Cariño said DecaDance was a Forex-initiated project with Gawad Kalinga in order to raise funds for the poor, build houses or provide education for children. Since their partnership began in 2005, Forex and Gawad Kalinga have already built between 10 to 15 houses at their Gawad Kalinga villages in the Philippines, Cariño said. Cariño said they expect 2000 people attending for what he described would be

a big party. Cariño said Decadance was a Forex-initiated project and “we asked Gawad Kalinga to join us to raise funds for the poor.” He said anyone in the FilipinoAmerican community can get involved by simply buying a ticket to the event. “For just $25 , they get to enjoy themselves in this dancing event. They get a chance to experience the Manila night life – bar experience and disco experience through retro dancing music of the 70’s , 80’s, and 90’s.” Cariño also said that they are seeking other sponsor in what could possibly be “the best event of the year.” Cariño said MadAve venue is an industrial type warehouse with an artsy setting. “Our party will have all the elements that bring Filipinos together: music, dancing, food, fun and a noble cause. The target market will be predominantly people in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s.” But what’s more exciting is that while tickets are priced at a very reasonable $25 each, Cariño said “we will project via live streaming the much awaited return of Manny Pacquiao to the boxing arena, this

time to battle Brandon Rios.” Part of the proceeds of this event will be shared with other charities that are supporting the education and medical needs of the less fortunate children and youth in the Philippines. Cariño said Forex had the privilege of building homes for the Gawad Kalinga village sites in Bukidnon in 2008. Two years later in 2010, Cariño added that Forex is collaborated with Gawad Kalinga to add more houses to the existing GK Forex Village in Pandi, Bulacan. Gawad Kalinga has been building homes for poor families in the Philippines and has earned the distinct honor as the premier non-profit organization that serves the homeless. The homes they build have two bedrooms. In addition, a Gawad Kalinga village also has a multi-purpose hall and a sibol school, where children from other villages can go to school. Tickets are available at all Forex offices. For more information call: 1-855-77 FOREX. (Myrna Aquitania)

Sprinkles Cupcakes salutes Grand Park’s first birthday with a sweet treat Park turns one with concert in salute to Daniel Pearl World Music Days LOS ANGELES (October 7, 2013) – Having Grand Park as a central gathering place in Los Angeles, and a place for celebration, fun and multi-cultural performing arts experiences, just got a little sweeter. In honor of Grand Park’s first birthday, Sprinkles Cupcakes has partnered with Grand Park to create a special Grand Park Strawberry Cupcake and is contributing 100 percent of the proceeds from the sales of this cupcake to support Grand Park’s free events and activities. The Sprinkles Grand Park Strawberry Cupcake will be sold for a limited time starting today, October 7, 2011 through October 11, 2013 – Grand Park’s birthday week – at the Sprinkles Cupcakes downtown Los Angeles store at Figat7th between 7th and 8th Streets, and at Grand Park’s Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. “Grand Park has quickly become a premier destination in Los Angeles County and an important part of the downtown community,” said Candace Nelson, founder, Sprinkles Cupcakes. “Much like Sprinkles has given an American classic, the cupcake, a fresh twist, and re-introduced many to its taste sensations, so has Grand Park given Angelenos a new way to enjoy the diversity of our community.” “Sprinkles is well-known not only for its delicious and highly distinctive cupcakes, but for its support for the community,” said Lucas Rivera, director, Grand Park. “Enjoying a Grand Park Strawberry Cupcake and supporting Grand Park in the process is the sweetest way I can think of to celebrate our birthday.” Based in Beverly Hills, Sprinkles Cupcakes launched in 2005 as the first cupcakes-only bakery and is widely recognized as the originator of the gourmet cupcake trend. The brand has since expanded and today operates 12 locations across the United States, including New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Its downtown Los Angeles location at Figat7th opened in March 2013 to the delight of the growing downtown community. In addition to the special cupcake, Grand Park will celebrate its birthday with its annual free Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert on Thursday, October 10,

2013 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. An international blues collaboration of Cedric Watson (USA) and Sidi Toure (Mali) will join with Los Angeles-based Ethiojazz ensemble, EthioCali, and KCRW’s Jeremy Sole at Grand Park for the birthday tribute event. Grand Park joins with venues around the world in presenting “Harmony for Humanity” concerts, focused on reminding the world of the principles by which Danny Pearl lived, the universal power of music and the shared humanity of all peoples. Grand Park was recently named one of America’s Great Public Spaces by the American Planning Association (APA) as part of the APA’s Great Places in America program. Grand Park was recognized as one of 30 great public spaces, neighborhoods and streets, including such distinguished sites as New York’s Grand Central Terminal, San Francisco’s Chinatown, and Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Since Grand Park opened officially in October 2012, it has already been the site for 250 events, performances and community activities. Grand Park attracted more than 10,000 people to its first July 4th celebration and gave the community a new place to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a major concert. The park also served as the flagship location for the second year in a row for the west coast celebration of National Dance Day. This holiday season, Angelenos can look forward to a major New Year’s celebration with NYELA in Grand Park, featuring music, dancing, large-scale art installations plus a unique 3-D digital mapping project to highlight the countdown to midnight with a video montage of a “human” clock. Its weekly Farmers Market and exercise classes were instant hits with downtown residents and workers, and the park’s iconic fountain, with its unique splash pad, attracts hundreds of children each week. The highly-versatile and fun-to-drive Fit was named “Best Subcompact for the Money” and “Best Hatchback for the Money” among 2013 vehicles sold in the United States. “The Fit brings truth to the concept that big things can come in small packages,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With an amazingly roomy interior, snappy styling, great driving dynamics and industry-leading Honda quality, Fit proves that small cars can provide value well beyond their size.” The “Best Cars for the Money” methodology combines quality and value data into a composite score. Within each of 21 award categories, the vehicle with the highest score

2013 Honda Fit

Mac Almerol and Simon Sigua, Filipino Sales, Honda Hollywood

is named the “Best Car for the Money” in that category. Quality is measured by the overall score a vehicle achieved in the U.S. News car rankings at the time the awards are published. The rankings, updated monthly at www.usnews. com/cars, compare cars on the basis of safety, reliability and a consensus of industry experts’ opinions. Value is measured by a combination of a vehicle’s five-year total cost of ownership and the average price paid for the vehicle at the time the awards are published. Winner of multiple industry awards due to its classleading safety scores, fuel economy ratings, versatility, residual value and overall excellence, the Honda Fit has built a loyal following over seven years and two generations. The 2013 Honda Fit earned a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), received a 2013 Residual Value Award from ALG and a 2013 Best Resale Value Award from KBB.com; was recognized as a “greener choice of 2013” by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE); and Fit is a seven-time Car and Driver magazine “10Best Cars” award winner.

Though the Fit has an overall exterior length of just 161.6 inches, a surprisingly roomy and versatile interior provides an impressive 90.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. There’s comfortable seating for up to five passengers, and behind the rear seats, there’s 20.6 cubic feet of storage space - much more than you’d find in a typical sedan. For enhanced versatility, the exclusive 60/40 split rear Magic Seat® offers multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. With its one-motion dive-down functionality, it can fold flat into the floor to provide a maximum 57.3 cu-ft. of rear cargo volume. Compared to any other vehicle in the subcompact class, the five-passenger Fit provides the lowest, flattest cargo floor and the most cargo volume. The Fit’s interior thus can easily be converted to tall-object mode or long-object mode based on the shape of the cargo. Standard comfort and convenience features include air conditioning, cruise control, remote entry, a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers, a USB audio interface3, an auxiliary audio input jack, MP3/ WMA playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS), power windows, power mirrors, power door locks and a security system. For a closer look at the 2013 Honda Fit give our kababayans Mac Almerol or Simon Sigua a call at 1-866-630-0734 or stop by the dealership and see them in person at 6511 Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood, California 90048. The family-owned Honda of Hollywood has been serving Los Angeles and the Filipino community for 45 years. This is why, service at Honda of Hollywood is incomparable and top-rated as they value people’s satisfaction first. Of course, getting Honda vehicle – which leads all other brands in quality – helps a lot.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage: Fun to drive and best in class fuel economy makes mirage a small car for a big city life The all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door subcompact not only marks the return of the company’s lovable and popular small vehicle offering but does so as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline-powered vehicle available in America. With a starting MSRP of only $12,995, the all-new 2014 Mirage rises to the top of its competitive segment delivering exceptional fuel efficiency delivering up to a phenomenal 44 mpg with an EPA-rated fuel economy of 40 mpg combined/37 mpg city/44 mpg highway on models equipped with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) and 37 mpg combined/34 mpg city/42 mpg highway on 5-speed manual transmission-equipped models. Along with its remarkable affordability and fuel efficiency, the new Mirage boasts an extraordinary level of features and accessories in its standard equipment package. What’s more, at a cost of only $1,200 more, the ES trim level of the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi adds numerous

With a starting MSRP of only $12,995, the all-new 2014 Mirage rises to the top of its competitive segment delivering exceptional fuel efficiency delivering up to a phenomenal 44 mpg with an EPA-rated fuel economy of 40 mpg combined/37 mpg city/44 mpg highway on models equipped with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) and 37 mpg combined/34 mpg city/42 mpg highway on 5-speed manual transmission-equipped models.

thoughtful and high-end features that are usually reserved for vehicles in a much higher priced segment. Don’t let its friendly face fool you - there’s a great deal of substance behind the exterior styling of the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. Mitsubishi’s new 5-door model achieves a remarkably low coefficient of drag at a mere 0.28. This miraculously clean design was Cerritos Mitsubishi achieved by a combination GSM Mark Mercado of numerous key features incorporated into the vehicle’s exterior. These include a minimized grille opening, a tidy yet elegant patented teardrop-shaped roofline, sculpted crease lines along the corners of the bumper, underbody tray covers and a sharp-looking high-mounted rear spoiler “wing” that very effectively help to reduce drag. Additionally, the entry-level DE trim level of the Mirage includes an aerodynamically-shaped full wheel cover that helps further reduce drag and turbulence. With its precision engineered high-tensile steel-fortified body/chassis providing reduced mass with excellent rigidity, Mitsubishi Motors’ newest model achieves a very low overall weight of only 1,973 lbs., giving this sturdy yet highly-maneuverable featherweight a better power-toweight ratio than its main rival. Aesthetically appealing exterior design elements, including sharply raked headlights, forward sloping beltline and a muscularly taught rear hatchback design, give the new Mirage its thoroughly modern look. Inside is a comfortable, ergonomically-enhanced cabin that is very spacious considering the vehicle’s exterior

size and features extensive use of soft-touch high-grade surface materials along with an eye-catching centerpiece - a center console covered with a rich-looking high-gloss piano black inlay trim. Even the HVAC system has been designed to offer reduced weight, improved heater performance and heated airflow to accommodate the rear seat passengers, along with the implementation of a new pollen filter to improve interior air quality. Other thoughtful interior touches include several handy storage compartments/trays and large cup holders, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, an included cover for the rear cargo area, and a surprisingly generous 17.2 cubic feet of rear cargo volume. Simple yet cleanly styled, the interior of the all-new Mirage is a pleasant and relaxing environment for both the driver as well as all of the vehicle’s occupants. For those who are loyal or have been wanting to own a Mitsubishi, you can now avail of your favorite Mitsubishi brand by visiting Cerritos Mitsubishi where our kababayans will help you choose the right car for you, whether it’s the Mitsubishi I, Outlander, Lancer or other Mitsubishi vehicle. Come and visit our kababayan Mark and his Fil-Am crew at the Cerritos Mitsubishi to Mark and his crew if you are a kababayan that means you are extra special. Even their marketing thrust is anchored on that magical Tagalog word. They have a Kabayan Price. “We have the best lease payment program, we offer huge discounts on many of our models,” said Mark. “And for new immigrants, first time buyers, and those without credit or are now having a bad credit just like everybody else, approval is not a big deal. We have a way of doing it.” Along with Alfie Alberto, Eugene Castro and Alvin Aberilla, Mark backstops the sales operation for the Filipino market. "Broker Jun Guintu was very accommodating. I think he is very sincere in helping customers and he seems true to his promise to make car buying simple.” ANONYMOUS COMMENT (Posted on Dec. 28, 2005, CARFAX VOICE OF THE CONSUMER)

JUN GUINTU 323-547-1291

junguintu@yahoo.com

"Thanks a lot for your help and good accomodation. I found no hassle in getting a new car from L.A Motors. I compliment Jun Guintu as a man with integrity , a man who is willing to help the customer. Pagpunta mo wala lahat. Walang hassle at madaling kausap si Jun.” LOLOY & REGINA DALOYOC, Panorama City

WE MAKE CAR BUYING SIMPLE! Ang dealer ng Pinoy na tumutulong sa mga Tax ID pa lang ang hawak at International Drivers pa lang ang lisensya.

• BAGO SA AMERICA? • FIRST TIME BUYER? LAHAT • NO CREDIT HISTORY? • LEASE RETURNS? TRADE INS? • TAX ID NUMBER? WALANG PROBLEMA! • INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?

OK

EUGENE & LEILA, Bellflower, CA As a first time buyer 3 years ago, I was so scared of scrupulous sales agents so I prayed for an honest one. I saw Jun's ad and took the risk. He is so easy to deal with over the phone; much easier to deal with in person. I got my first car without any hassle. I recently traded my old car. This time, I did everything over the phone. When I met Jun the second time, all documents are ready for my signature and my new car ready for pick up. Everything was exactly what he promised over the phone. —BETH CAROLINO, Los Angeles

Subaru reports record September sales Cherry Hill, N.J. - Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 31,755 vehicle sales for the month of September, representing the best September sales month in company history. September sales increased 15 percent over September 2012. Year-todate sales for Subaru total 313,407 – 28 percent higher than the same period in 2012. The company is on track to achieve its fifth-consecutive year of sales increases. Sales for the all-new 2014 Forester remain strong at 10,620 units, a 75 percent increase over September 2012 and a year-to-date increase of 49 percent. Legacy sedan and Outback crossover were recently rated as “superior” in the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Front Crash Prevention (FCP) test program. The FCP program was created as a result of research by the Highway Loss Data Institute indicating that forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, such as Subaru’s EyeSight system, are helping drivers avoid frontal crashes. “Subaru of America is particularly proud of the Legacy and Outback earning the IIHS highest rating in their FCP test,” said Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “This is a testament to the safety and technology advantage provided by the EyeSight

driver assist system. It is no wonder more and more people are shopping the Subaru brand.” “With strong owner loyalty and new owners joining our brand at a record pace, we expect to close the year with more than 400,000 vehicles sold,” said Bill Cyphers,

senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. But while we all ponder as to why Subaru continues to become a favorite of many, come to Subaru Glendale where you will find that indeed these cars are selling like hotcakes just get in touch with our kababayans at Subaru Glendale, who have been serving the Filipino-American market and who have made Filipinos love the Subaru brand and the Subaru vehicles’ versatility. What are you waiting for, come on down to Subaru Glendale and our kababayans Christian Marilla, Bobby Cheng, Chris Garchitorena and Jojo Diala will be more than happy to inform you why Subaru is becoming a favorite of Filipinos and the whole American market. Ford expands in Asia, sees sales over 1-M this year DETROIT, October 9, 2013 (AFP) – Ford is catching up to its competitors in key Asian markets and expects to sell more than one million vehicles there for the first time this year, a senior executive said Wednesday. Key to that growth is China, where Ford’s sales were up 51 percent in the first nine months of the year to 647,849 vehicles, said David Schoch, Ford’s group vice president for the Asia Pacific region. “We’re gaining a lot of traction with the new products we’ve brought into China,” Schoch told reporters in Detroit. The second largest US automaker expects to double its market share in China to nearly five percent by the end of this year from 2.5 percent in 2012, he said. “We expect Ford Asia Pacific to be a major contributor to Ford profits by the middle of the decade,” added Schoch. Schoch acknowledged that Ford was “slow” to enter the Asian market and the current plan to expand in China wasn’t put in place until four years ago. Prior to that, Ford was distracted by a lengthy period of serious financial problems and major reorganization. Rival General Motors was much faster to move into the Asian market and is expected to sell more than three million vehicles in China alone this year. Ford is currently building manufacturing hubs in China, India and Thailand and recently relocated its regional headquarters to Shanghai. While those plants will boost Ford’s

regional capacity of 1.9 million units— which vastly exceeds current sales—the automaker is also moving ahead with the construction of six new regional assembly plants, including four in China. That will bring total capacity to 2.9 million vehicles by 2015. “When you’re in these emerging markets, you have to think long-term,” Schock said. “We have very aggressive growth targets.” Ford is also expanding the number of models it sells and will soon be introducing the Fiesta, the Mondeo and the Transit Van to the region. The automaker expects that China – and the region – will play an increasingly important role in the global auto industry. Annual vehicle sales are expected to hit 32 million in China by the end of the decade – more than in the United States and Europe combined, Schoch said. Meanwhile, sales in the Asia Pacific region are expected to make up 46 percent of global sales in 2020, up from 41 percent in 2013. Ford also forecasts that global auto sales will rise to 109 million in 2020 from 82 million in 2013. In addition to China, Ford’s Asia Pacific region includes India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines. FOR MORE NEWS AND INFORMATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE

“I have tasked our designers to come up with some ideas on paper how they would imagine our car, the RollsRoyce, would look like in this segment,” he said. “This segment is interesting, it keeps growing and growing and growing, even at a time when the whole automotive industry was quite in a crisis.” The auto press is abuzz over the idea of a Rolls-Royce SUV but Müller-Ötvös said the BMW-owned British company would tread carefully as “Rolls-Royce is www.carsonhonda.com not sporty, Rolls-Royce is not utility (and) it is not in the genes of this brand”. 2013 Honda Insight LX Automatic “There is no decision yet made, and we Lease for TRUE aren’t rushing it, and there is also really no 36 month lease. 12k per year. $1,688 drive off. $199 per month RICKY Get Your PRICE $ for 36 months per month plus tax. Angels Baseball closes out 2013 season with putting contest at Pechanga to help children with life-threatening medical conditions TEMECULA, Calif. , October 7, 2013 – Members of the Los Angeles Angels Baseball franchise officially closed out their season on Monday by participating in a putting contest with children involved with Make-A-Wish. Current roster and alumni players, plus the team chairman and the voice of the Angels, teamed up with the deserving kids at the practice putting green at Journey at Pechanga golf course in Temecula late this morning. The teams made up of Angels catcher Hank Conger, infielder Grant Green, former Angels pitcher Clyde Wright, former second baseman Bobby Grich, voice of the Angels on Fox Sports West, Victor Rojas and Angels Baseball Chairman, Dennis Kuhl played against each other and for participating, the kids won trophies and golf apparel provided by Pechanga, plus luxury suite tickets with food and drinks provided at a 2014 Angels game and a chance to watch pre-game batting practice from the field. The children with the top score won a signed Angels Baseball jersey. The main goal of the event was to raise awareness for Make-A-Wish and the services it provides to the entire Southern California community. “We’re incredibly grateful to Angels Baseball and to Pechanga for this partnership,” said Stephanie McCormick,

IVAN LEGASPI

President and CEO of Make-A-Wish. “Wishes forever change the lives of the children – taking them away, just for a moment, from the pain and stress of the needles, chemotherapy, and hospitals, and giving them an experience that will impact them and their families forever.
