Their concern was supported by the village officials who decided to cooperate with some academics from Udayana University to do a research on whether or not the mud can be used for the cultural activity. MEAT GALORE Perched atop the Holy Crab restaurant on Jalan Petitenget, Betty Lou is the place to go for a real South American-style meat galore. Adorned with white-coloured wooden furniture, high ceiling, an open kitchen and a combination of indoor and outdoor spaces, Betty Lou exudes a strong tropicalisland-casual atmosphere that gives everyone a great feeling of easiness. This utterly chilled-out ambiance is also reflected in their dishes. Offering authentic South American barbecue, this little eatery displays its delectable dishes in a rather nonchalant fashion. Despite all of its effort to push the casual atmosphere, there is nothing easy about their way of preparing the food. Serving

ITALIAN-STYLE Bringing the chic atmosphere of the Italian Amalfi Coast and combining it with the unpretentious attitude of Bali, Da Maria – the brainchild of the famous restaurateurs Maurice Terzini and Adrian Reed of Motel Mexicola – presents an Osteria style Italian restaurant. Designed by Roman architect Lazarini Pickering, Da Maria’s interior pays homage to the beautiful aesthetics of 1960’s Amalfi Coast courtyard with a fresh blue and white palette and bold geometric styling. The space is even more welcoming as the contemporary take on the classic is paired with typically Balinese greenery of rubber trees, cacti and passion fruit vines spiraling down the walls from the Roman Pantheon-

DS: I’ve always been interested in photography since I was young. I picked up my first camera in school and ever since then I don’t think I’ve ever stopped loving the photography world. BB: Do you still remember your first professional photography experience? How was it? DS: It’s been a while. It was a wedding photoshoot for my friend in Seattle. It happened so fast, the photoshoot was done within half a day. But it was truly memorable for me, not just because Puget Sound was gorgeous but also because it was so quick and effective. ISLAND HOPPING The next morning, we hopped on once again to the firsherman’s boat after having a simple breakfast of lontong sayur and a glass of coffee. We were ready for an island hopping. Our first stop was Keramut Island, only an hour away by boat from Jemaja Island. Keramut Island is also a fishermen’s village and is home to a sea turtle conservation where we could see some baby sea turtles swimming near the shoreline surrounded by a net to keep them safe before they were released to the sea. where a navy post stood guarded

HOW TO GET THERE: From Bali, you can go to Batam in Riau Islands by plane. Then, get a taxi to Telaga Punggur Port and continue the journey by taking a one-hour boat ride with Oceana Boat to Tanjungpinang. Or you can also go to Jakarta by plane and fly straight to Tanjungpinang. Then, stay overnight at Tanjungpinang, and leave to Anambas Islands with Seven Star Boat the next morning.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
