UBUD A WISE WOMAN A dear friend Lela, R e i k i M a s t e r, teacher and practitioner for 27 years, is now available for one on one healing sessions. Lela has lived and worked in Ubud for more than eight years, assisting a mutual friend bring a major project to fruition. Now she has space in her life and calendar again, to share with us in this way. Reiki means Universal Lifeforce Energy, and is transmitted through a one-hour session. Reiki carries the Violet Ray and its transmutation and energetic frequency adjustment results in pain relief, chakra alignment, energy infusion, brain balancing and restful sleep. Through Reiki, Lela will help you rediscover a body, mind and spirit that is more fun to live in. Call Lela: 0856 388 7022, or email for more information.

shaped Radiantly Alive raw chocolates. Taksu is also offering ridiculously inexpensive “practicum” massages again, this time in the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi style, as their masseurs master yet another discipline (Only rp 65,000 for one hour, including hot shower). Or try a romantic interlude, celebrating Valentine’s Day with a nature inspired, four-course lunch for two on Romantic Sunday, February 13th or Monday, February 14th. NYEPI Sadly, I’ll miss Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year’s Day, which this year falls on March 5. From late February it’s worth cruising around the nearby villages, as the “ogoh ogoh” take shape, evolving from simple wooden frames into huge nasty paper mache monsters representing the bad spirits that have visited the island this year. On March 4 they will be ceremoniously carried through the streets on bamboo rafts, on the shoulders of hundreds of Balinese men, and then castrated and destroyed in the evening, ridding us of last year’s monsters.

The January launch of Saturday Night Supper Club at Wild Ginger Restaurant, with guest chef Hannah and her delicious home-cooked South African recipes, prompted thought about other countries with scrumptious cuisine, not yet available in Ubud.

At midnight, Bali completely closes down – even the airport, no planes allowed in or out – and we are legally obliged to stay within our own compound. We make no sound and no cooking smells, show no lights and generally keep out of sight of the new lot of evil spirits, who fly overhead, decide the island is clear of human life and fly on, leaving us alone. It’s a great plan, and also gives us the chance for some quiet time, “new year’s resolution” style. . EXHIBITION AFTER NYEPI

Hannah’s 70,000rp set menu included creamy pumpkin soup, a choice of three delicious traditional African casseroles - we chose the chicken, beef AND the vegetarian - with a salad, and an indescribable dessert called Malva Pudding. This is where “slow food” comes from - family recipes that take time, love and energy to produce. Wild Ginger on Jl Kutuh is normally closed on Saturday nights and the South African supper will be available every second week (next one, February 19). Book via sms to 082144 026 020; profits donated to Yayasan Cempaka Putih.

Starting just after Nyepi, Artist Kiranada S t e r l i n g Benjamin will present a solo exhibition of exquisite Japanese batik at the ARMA museum until March 26. For more info: visit www.betsysterlingbenjamin. com, email kiranada@betsysterlingbenjamin. com, or phone 08585 704 1663.

In the meantime, are there any other ex-pats who could host a supper club night? Greek, Thai, Brazilian or ….?

DECISIONS, DECISIONS Some try to focus on work, but there are too many reasons to go out at night. And too many decisions – sometimes it’s easier to just sample everything. Last Thursday, I started at Laughing Buddha Bar on Jl. Monkey Forest, where international group Love in The Circus was so popular they had people spilling out onto the street, then shot over to listen to young band Emergency Exit, from One Dollar for Music Foundation at Bar Luna in Jl Gootama. I even read my favourite poem at Bar Luna’s (literary) Open Mike. Then I donned my dancing shoes and tried a bit of salsa with Karma at Café Havana on Jl. Dewi Sita, eventually back on Jl Monkey Forest, joining friends for some great reggae music at Lobong. Got home by midnight, with more decisions to make in the morning. VALENTINES FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN Make sure you support the 3rd Invitation of Love – the annual Valentine party on February 14, hosted by Kum and the Griya Faria reggae band. Held this year at the new CP Royal Steakhouse behind Lobong on Jl Monkey Forest, this fundraising extravaganza will support Yayasan Sjaki-Tari-Us. There will also be music performances from Ubud Djembe Session and Dria Raba Blind Children’s Band, and Balinese dance & drama from Ikang Papa Deaf Children. Ubud’s generosity shows again, with all food and drinks are donated by local restaurants, raffle prizes for hotels, spas, restaurants, rafting and banana boat rides, and auctions of paintings from Pranoto and other outstanding local painters. All proceeds go to the children. SWEETHEART MONTH And for your own sweetheart, book time for sharing at Taksu Spa. You could try a Sweetheart Massage in the special Couples Room, with 20% discount off the massage of each partner’s choice – maybe try the Chocolate Body Scrub and an Aromatic Floral Bath, with complimentary heart-

For those who want fast improvement in their understanding and fluency in a language, the “immersion method” – with good teachers and modern, intensive teaching methods – is the best answer. Until now, despite some excellent classes at Pondok Pekak library, Starfish and elsewhere, students have had to go to Denpasar or more often, Jogjakarta, to make rapid improvement in their Indonesian language. The newly opened Cinta Bahasa (short for Aku Cinta Bahasa Indonesia; I love Indonesian language) at Campuhan College provides group and tailored private courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced students, with meals and accommodation available on site. The group beginner course is $425 for a 4-week course (about $12/ hour). Ibu Dyah Prashetya Hening, the founder of Jogja’s best-regarded college, professionally trained Cinta Bahasa’s two highly experienced teachers. Ph. 081382 309045. Email: DANCE GATHERS MOMENTUM “Do ya wanna dance, under the moonlight?” Seems more and more people do, in Ubud. Try Barefoot Dance with Tye Zan, music maestro and dancer extraordinaire. Every second Saturday 7:309:30pm, up on the roof at Taksu at the very bottom of Jl Gautama South. Next two sessions this Saturday, February 12, and Feb 26. Organisers say it’s Ubud’s healthiest, most wholesome evening of dance and camaraderie, and ask you to bring your happy dancing feet. No alcohol and no smoking, but delicious drinks and light refreshments available. A lucky draw winner will receive a free 1-hour Thai massage. 75.000rp per person, more info: 0361 971 490.
