EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES By Graham Doessel My name is Graham Doessel and the only reason I’m alive and writing this article is because of early detection. In early January this year I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. The only reason I was diagnosed is that I had a slight discomfort in the groin and I sought medical advice. By the time I had any warning (the slight discomfort) the cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes. The secondary cancer below my left renal artery, is very aggressive and has grown to the size of a tennis ball in just two months. I am now being treated with intense chemotherapy and my prognosis is very good. If I had done the normal bloke thing and ignored the pain, there is a very good chance that the secondary cancer would have grown out of control and I could be facing a death sentence. As it is, I have caught it just in time, and the chemotherapy will be all that is needed to remove the tumour.
Unfortunately there has been a steady increase (2% each year) in the number of men diagnosed with testicular cancer in Australia since 1982. The reason for this increase is as yet unknown. The good news is testicular cancer has a 95% cure rate if detected early. It is vitally important that all men do regular checkups to check for any lumps or irregularities. A self check will normally take less than 60 seconds and should be performed once per month. For detailed information on performing a testicular cancer self check, simply look online or go to www.now.org.au/tcan for links to other great resources. Guys, don’t wait! If you have any unusual pain or any unusual lump, go to the doctor. Get it checked out because if you don’t, who are your kids going to say goodnight to?
Testicular cancer is the second most common form of cancer amongst Australian men aged 18 to 39 years, with almost half of all new recorded cases diagnosed in men under 33 years of age. In 1997 about 550 new cases of testicular cancer were diagnosed.

5 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism for Weight Loss
by Craig Ballantyne
Even if you are convinced that you are cursed with a slow metabolism, you can do something about it. In fact, basic lifestyle changes can give you a revved up metabolism capable of burning a lot more fat and calories 24 hours a day.
“Exhale to a healthier future”
And your metabolism does not have to suck just because you are over 30. I am often asked if there is anything that can be done about the decrease in metabolism that happens as we age. Well, the following tips will help you increase your metabolism as much as possible. Eating properly and exercising can keep your metabolism at optimal levels for several decades - you are never too old to lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean. 1. Interval training - This type of exercise is far superior to traditional cardio for boosting metabolism. Once you stop moderate aerobic training, your metabolism quickly returns to normal. But the turbulence from interval training helps your body burn more calories for hours after the workout. 2. Gain muscle and lose fat - Now while it is true that putting on muscle mass will help your metabolism at rest, it is NOT true that each pound of muscle will help burn an extra 50 calories per day. That is a pipe dream. But having more muscle will allow you to exercise harder and create more turbulence in your body. Plus, muscle looks good on men and women. 3. Eat more protein - No surprise here, bodybuilders have known this for a long time and have been using protein to help them achieve their lean bodies. A recent study showed that a high-protein, low-carbohydrate shake led to a greater increase in metabolism than a low-protein, high-carbohydrate drink. Scott, C., and R. Devore. Diet-induced thermogenesis: variations among three isocaloric meal-replacement shakes. Nutrition 21: 874-877, 2005. 4. Don’t starve yourself or skip meals to lose weight - Reducing your food intake could lead to a slower metabolism. That will stop your fat loss program and will lead to rapid weight re-gain when you return to a normal eating pattern. 5. Eat 6-8 mini-meals per day, rather than 2-3 large meals - A new study showed that eating 6 times per day was associated with eating fewer

calories per day, lowering cholesterol levels, and lowering post-meal insulin levels. Eating several small meals per day might even help you burn more calories. I recommend combining an increased meal frequency with an increased protein and fiber intake. That’s a guaranteed way to lose fat and gain muscle. I cover how to make these changes in Get Lean, my most advanced fat loss manual. Farshchi, H., et al. Beneficial metabolic effects of regular meal frequency on dietary thermogenesis, insulin sensitivity, and fasting lipid profiles in healthy obese women. Amer. J. Clin. Nutr. 81: 16-24, 2005. Do all of these simple steps and you’ll increase your metabolism and succeed on your weight loss program.

Rock Climbing involves using all of the major muscle groups whilst helping build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, improve memory, increase flexibility and coordination, and sharpen your mental focus. Some people like the vigorous full-body work out (without been stuck in a room lifting weights), others like the exercise and community at their local gym or crag (climbers line the cliffs at Kangaroo Point every night), and others are competitors who train year round for the personal satisfaction of accomplishment and victory. Climbing is challenging and embracing the unique physical and mental challenges it offers is a very rewarding experience.
Balanced - Your Health, Your Wealth, Your Lifestyle
Contrary to popular belief, rock climbing can be undertaken by people of almost all ages and physical ability. Children as young as two and adults in their eighties can climb their way to new heights. Climbing is great for children. They are natural climbers and it is a great way to improve their self-confidence, trust, memory and coordination. Rock climbing also allows us to get outside and enjoy nature. For those of us that spend our days inside working or going to school, getting out and interacting with the natural environment is a refreshing experience. Making Dinner Fun for Kids By Rita Di Bartolo If there is one time of the day when it’s good for the family to come together, it’s the evening meal. Young children need the regularity of a sit-down meal so they can settle at night and teenagers (despite appearances) need time to talk, to be heard and to learn from their parents.
Making it healthy With only some minor changes in approach, you can make dinner much healthier. Use a wide variety of cereal-based food (preferably wholegrain or wholemeal rice, pasta, potatoes, noodles), lean meats and poultry (trimmed of fat/skin removed), fish and vegetables when preparing meals, remembering to use canola, sunflower, soybean or olive oils for cooking rather than animal fats. Making it work - to make the evening meal easier:
Plan meals on a weekly basis and write a shopping list to ensure you have all of the ingredients.
and not overeat, talk about your feelings of fullness, especially with younger children. You might say, “This is delicious, but I’m full, so I’m going to stop eating.” Similarly, parents who are always dieting or complaining about their bodies may foster these same negative feelings in their kids. Try to keep a positive approach about food. Get Kids Involved Most kids will enjoy deciding what to make for dinner. Talk to them about making choices and planning a balanced meal. Some might even want to help shop for ingredients and prepare the meal. In the kitchen, select age-appropriate tasks so your child can play a part without getting injured or feeling overwhelmed. And at the end don’t forget to praise the chef.
Try to make twice as much food and freeze half of it for another night.
Make stir-fries for quick cooking.
Make casseroles, stews or soups that can be left in the oven or on the stovetop while you do other things. How to be a role model Kids will follow the lead of the adults they see every day. By eating fruits and vegetables and not overindulging in the less nutritious stuff, you’ll be sending the right message.
Quick Tips • Use a variety of cereal based foods • Select age appropriate tasks in the kitchen • D0nt complain about your body in front of your children • Plan meals on a weekly basis
Another way is to limit portions
EAT ORGANIC AND EAT LESS By Deborah Wray Did you know that the nutrient content of many foods has fallen dramatically over the past few decades? Or that you’re probably piling more on your plate and increasing your kilojoule intake because of it? One of the first things our customers at Wray Organic notice when they start eating our certified organic fruit and vegetables is that they eat less and have increased energy levels. Why is this so? Growing crops year- round on the same plot of earth with no crop rotation using toxic fertilizers and pesticides, exhausts the soil and strips it of any nutrients. If the soils are not mineral rich than the food that grows in it or graze on it will also lack minerals. The term ‘hollow foods’ has been used to describe such produce, because it lacks any nutrients, so you are in effect eating nothing! The portion sizes that once provided sufficient nutrients are no longer enough, so we’re all eating more. In a world of ever – increasing waistbands, that’s a problem. If you eat nutrient dense organic foods you only need smaller amounts, as your body is satisfied with less. Also your energy levels are improved because the body is getting the fuel it requires to function properly. Many people believe organic food is just about crops which have not been sprayed with pesticides but it is so much more than that. The soils on an organic farm are encouraged to be mineral rich and because of this the food is nutrient dense. Eat organic and experience the difference.
Your Child’s Math Skills -An Investment That Always Pays OffARA) – An investment in your child’s education doesn’t necessarily include a deposit on their first car. Studies show that a child’s academic foundation is built upon skills developed as early as kindergarten, so it’s never too early to start supplementing their education. With so many products and programs focused on helping your child learn to read, math skills can easily be lost in the shuffle. And since math proficiency is so important for both school and later employment, parents shouldn’t ignore the role math plays in their child’s future. Here are a few tips to help them improve their math skills: * Find ways to play counting games during the day, such as counting the number of stairs, or
the number of red cars you pass while driving *Cook with your child and have your child measure the amounts for the ingredients. * Ask your child to find the right amount to pay for an item when out shopping *Sign your child up for music lessons *Play card games like Go Fish, Crazy Eights, and Rummy, to teach whilst having fun *Play games that help develop math skills like DreamBox Learning K-2 Math (www. dreambox.com). The innovative, Web-based product is specifically tailored to a child’s skills.

Tips on how to brown bag breakfast on the GO? (ARA) – Instead of forgoing nutrition in the face of the morning rush, simply copy a lunchtime move and “brown bag” breakfast. “Skipping breakfast usually means you’re hungry by late morning and are more likely to visit the vending machine or buy a pastry that’s much too large. Just one nutritional slip-up can make it hard to get back on track for the day, so spend a few minutes packing a healthy breakfast to ensure your day gets started on the right nutritional foot,” says nutrition consultant Elizabeth Ward, M.S., RD and author of “The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to the New Food Pyramids.” But more important, she says, are the health benefits the meal offers. Eating a healthy breakfast every day may increase daily dietary fibre intake significantly, aid in weight management and contribute to increased attention and performance at work and school. Breakfast also serves up an opportunity for good nutrition, which is beneficial considering less than 20 percent of people are meeting the current daily guidelines for fruit and vegetable consumption. “A healthy breakfast is a great way to get a jumpstart on nutrient intake for the day,” says Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO of Produce for Better Health Foundation. “For example, simply drinking one 8-ounce glass of 100 percent orange juice provides almost 25 percent of the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. Grab a carton or fill up your favourite insulated to-go cup when on the run to easily increase your fruit servings for the day.”
* Cover the food pyramid. For balance, fill your brown bag with choices from three of the five food groups (grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat/beans). * Choose foods carefully. Read labels on breakfast and energy bars. Many are very high in sugar and not as healthy as they appear. For your morning OJ, make sure it is 100 percent fruit juice instead of fruit “drinks” which may contain very little fruit juice and lots of added sugar. * Stay on your own schedule. Not hungry early in the morning? Remember you don’t have to eat your brown bag breakfast right when you get to work. A healthy meal fuels the mind and body so just squeeze it in before lunchtime.

Creating Melting Moments in photography By Alisa Cork feel privileged to be given the opportunity to photograph these special moments which become precious family memories”.
Ivy Photography is a business run by Vanessa Woodrick & Alison Telfer McDonald, cousins and great friends. The girls started their business 5 years ago and have grown from strength to strength based on their quality and professionalism.
The girls also photograph at childcare centres, kindergartens and primary schools. They differ from the larger school photography companies in that they offer a more customised approach. They use natural settings within the school environment and take that bit of extra time chatting with each child to ensure that they are relaxed and happy. “If it means spending more time with each child then so be it. We want parents to love their school photos and be proud to display them rather than file them away” says Vanessa.
The name of their business was inspired by their Nanna Ivy who was an artist and had a wonderful way with people. “Ivy was an amazing lady who made such an impact on both of our lives so it seemed the perfect name for us” says Vanessa. “Needless to say, our grandfather Elton was delighted with the name choice!”
‘Relaxed, natural photography capturing melting moments’ expresses exactly what these two creative and talented women have achieved with Ivy Photography.
“With digital photography there is no excuse for the class shot having eyes closed or heads down. We take that extra time and care so that each child looks good in their class photo”.
Ivy Photography specialise in children, family, wedding and school photography. The girls love people and pride themselves on being approachable and friendly to work with. When photographing children and families, Vanessa & Alison like to use natural settings such as the client’s backyard or local park. Fantastic photographic results can be achieved when children and parents are at ease within their environment.
Ivy Photography find that their school photography has lead to numerous family photography sittings as parents see the quality and warmth in their school images. The girls welcome the opportunity to discuss your photography needs. Ivy Photography are offering a half price weekday sitting of $50.00 and a free 6x8” image special. (valid until end of Feb 09).
“It’s common for us to walk away from a family shoot with grass and dirt stains on us because we love getting down to the kids level and having fun” says Alison.
“It’s all about capturing those candid moments not just working to a formula” Alison said. “We like to go with moment and let people feel comfortable enough to show their true essence”.

YMCA Gymnastics finds new home in Enoggera By Alisa Cork The YMCA’s Y-North Gymnastics Club is now open at Enoggera after many months of uncertainty surrounding its new location and ultimately, it’s future.
“Creating Melting Moments”
After 40 years of servicing the community from its Windsor property, the YMCA was issued a compulsory resumption to make way for the Northern Busway.

An extensive search of over 100 properties was conducted to meet the YMCA’s requirements to relocate their successful gymnastics program. They were delighted to secure their new home at 240 South Pine Road Enoggera last December. YMCA Group manager Michael Tsiamis said the new location would enable the YMCA’s gymnastics program to continue servicing its 380 existing students as well as welcome new families in the Enoggera and surrounding suburbs to the fun sport of Gymnastics.
The YMCA maintains that early development of gross motor skills is of life-long benefit to children and helps them excel later in life. With a Nationally accredited Kindergym program, YMCA coaches guide children 14 months to four and a half years through a stimulating movement and play experience with opportunities to explore and develop their physical abilities, building self confidence, body awareness and body control.
“Children will develop body awareness and self confidence laying the foundations of balance, agility and general physical coordination relevant to all sports.” The YMCA’s competitive program adopts the National L e v e l s System of gymnastic skill learning w h e r e children six years and over progress f r o m beginner’s Level 1 through to competitive Level 10.
“Kindergym also has the added benefit of parents working closely with their children in a fun environment,” said Mr Tsiamis.
“Within the first few days of opening, the response was massive, with huge numbers of people making enquiries about services and programs,” Mr Tsiamis said.
The YMCA now looks like surpassing the membership numbers previously experienced at the Windsor location, with no sign of interest abating.
The YMCA is a family friendly centre and considers community involvement a high priority.
“People are saying to us ‘thank goodness you are here’, and that means a lot to us,” Mr Tsiamis said.
“When people support the YMCA, they are supporting the community because any profits generated through our programs support our benevolent arm, ‘Y-Care’

and provides a place for many public functions and events including the annual Arts Festival. Moore Park Beach also features excellent fishing, crabbing and boating opportunities along with the stunning stretch of white sandy beach, patrolled by award-winning surf lifesavers and a thriving little nipper squad. Moore Park Beach is alive with local wildlife and birdlife, and kangaroos are often seen grazing on the beach reserve and on other grassy parklands in the area. Turtle watching is a favourite pastime for locals, who can experience first-hand the laying and hatching season right under their noses on their own parcel of beach.
Moore Park Beach Community Association President Alan Davis said the wonderful family environment that almost 2000 locals call home will not remain a secret for much longer.
Mr Davis said the Community Association, Lions Club and Fishing Club are proud to have extremely active community members at Moore Park Beach, with everyone pitching in to make the town increasingly attractive to families and holiday-makers.
“We have been fortunate to live in one of the best beachside towns in Australia. We are also lucky that for years we have been able to get away with it without anyone else finding out!” Mr Davis said.
“The clean air, sounds of the ocean, low traffic and all-weather roads and of course the people, are what make Moore Park Beach the perfect place to settle down,” Mr Davis said.
A far cry from the racing city with its many busy attractions, Moore Park Beach in contrast provides families and couples with its own attractions giving people the chance to escape the ‘rat race’ which is causing so much executive stress.
“It will not be long before the word is spread about our extraordinary beach paradise.”
Local families are enjoying the new services to the area in the form of a new primary school, restaurant, shops, and a tavern with children’s play area. The Community Association’s hall is another source of pride
For children four and a half to six years of age, recreation gymnastic classes focus on dominant movement patterns and basic motor skill learning.
Since relocating to Enoggera, the community has shown us just how much the YMCA is needed in that area, leaving Mr Tsiamis and the YMCA team amazed at the support.
WIN a 3 day stay at Moore Park Beach
For years, the 17 kilometre stretch of white sandy beach has been Queensland’s best kept secret when every other pocket of sand along the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and the north Queensland beaches have been builtup, rebuilt and developed to the point that vacant land is a rarity.

Balanced - Your Health, Your Wealth, Your Lifestyle
Mar 24 - Apr 21
Your over eagerness may result in you overestimating your abilities between the 1st and 4th. Work colleagues will appreciate your enthusiasm but may not take too kindly to you trying to persuade them to do things against their will. Listen more than you speak in the first few days of the month.
Apr 21 - May 20
You’ll feel amorous and extremely affectionate between the 5th and 7th. You’ll receive as much as you give in your love life and will enjoy some intimate time with those you feel closest to. Don’t rely on physical gestures to gauge the depth of a person’s love however.
May 21 - Jun 21
Around the 8th you mustn’t expect something for nothing. Watch out for secret enemies and for those who may want to undermine you. This is a period where you may not be able to trust others as much as you usually do. Someone, perhaps a friend, is demanding financially more than you can give and it will disappoint you.
Jun 22 - Jul 22
Drugs, alcohol and other pharmaceuticals need to be monitored between the 2nd and the 12th. Check your tolerance and sensitivity to these things even if they are prescribed by your doctor or health practitioner. If you happen to be feeling a little out of sorts may well be some sort of intolerance to these medical prescription drugs or would you believe even some foods that you may be allergic to.
July 23 - Aug 22
You can expect a tremendous amount of success in your work or even at home in the first and last week of the month. For those of you who are ambitious you can acquire a new post or start an educational program which will bolster your ego and sense of self worth. Remember to use this wisely. People will turn against you if you start showing off and bragging too much about your accomplishments.
Aug 23 - Sep 22
The period of the 8th to the 14th is a wonderful time to stimulate your relationships and you can expect a great deal of sexual satisfaction, mainly through your exploration and sharing with a loved one. An excessively lustful streak needs to be fulfilled so hopefully your partner is feeling the same way. If not, you may need to look to greener pastures.
Nov 22 - Dec 21
There’s much more confidence and stability in your work due to the continued presence of Saturn in that area. Demanding responsibilities can be tackled with a creative twist thereby making life a little more bearable for you on the work front. In romance, you may feel a little cool and distant from the one you love. This is a brief cycle and should pass by the second week of the month.
Dec 22 - Jan 19
You’re able to use your words with maximum impact now but you mustn’t steamroll people who don’t have the same level of drive or intellectual ability. After the 25th you could run into a few disputes just when you thought you had a deal sewn up. This is not about being right but about respecting others’ opinions. Try to be more tolerant and this will work to your advantage.
Jan 20 - Feb18
You are in a lucky phase due to the placement of Jupiter in your Sun sign. Not much should go wrong just now but you need to slow down and recharge your mental and emotional batteries if you are to capitalise on these great planetary transits. Around the 15th you need to monitor your finances and make sure you haven’t paid too much to something.
Feb 19 - Mar 20
Expect changes in your romantic life to be exciting but also a little harrowing particularly between the 20th and the 28th. You need to investigate someone you meet before giving your heart to them. Don’t be lured by the promise of shallow words. Look to the actions of people to understand who they really are.
Sep 23 - Oct 23
Indecision is the greatest waste of energy but this is exactly how you will feel between the 21st and 26th. A work or financial matter may leave you up in the air. Choices and more choices make life a little difficult but you mustn’t be afraid to listen to the advice of someone you trust. The secret in making the correct choice is to do what you love rather than chasing the buck.

Exercise to stay alive By Jon Herring Only one in six older citizens exercise for 10 minutes or more at least three times a week, according to The Wall Street Journal. Four out of five seniors (65 and older) admit they “never” exercise. What about you? How many times did you exercise last week?
The University of Michigan Medical School reported that “adults in their 50s and early 60s who were regularly active were about 35% less likely to die in the next eight years than those who were sedentary.” This article appears courtesy of Early to Rise’s Total Health Breakthroughs which offers alternative solutions for mind, body and soul. The grape is one in the same, in Australia it comes down to the winemaker’s preference to which style they produce. Pinot Gris generally has vibrant aromas and a rich palate with texture and spice. Some of the wine spends time in barrel to aid with texture and spice. The Italian version is for the most part neutral to smell and has a leaner palate featuring pear, almonds and a backbone of acid, this wine is.
King Valley VIC
Aromas of pear and orange blossom leading to a light bodied palate with slight mealy texture, mouth watering and lingering.
Classic Pinot Gris flavours of rose petal and fresh pear. This wine has a textural palate with cleansing acidity due to the high altitude of the vineyard.

Pewsey Vale Pinot Gris 2008

This wine is dry and fresh, the palate is focused and defined. An elegant and persistent wine that leaves you asking for a second and sometimes third glass.
The flavours in this wine remind me of crunchy apple and pear, a richly textured palate that finishes long and fresh with a touch of spice. Produced in only small parcels, worth the hunt

These are simple but very effective steps that you can take to make sure that you stay ahead of your competition. Warren Buffet once famously said “It’s only when the tide goes out that you learn who’s been swimming naked”. As the economic tide goes out you need to make sure you get the basics right. Some businesses have been able to swim naked in the good times but coming times will catch them out. Don’t let your business be ‘caught out’.

“Profits may be increasing but if your debtors are growing at a faster rate and are not paying, creditors will soon be crashing down demanding payment.” The easiest way to go broke is allowing your business to grow without establishing proper control systems to monitor your cash flow
I n g e r e (Pronounced “in gear”) can help you monitor your cash flow by actively being involved in your business. Ingere are not the type of accountants that provide you with financial reports six months after the relevant period.
Without proper systems in place you may not know how much others owe your business, how much your business owes others or how much money your business has in the bank.
Ingere can assist you in putting systems together that provide timely reporting within 5 working days of the month end to allow you to analyse the business before potential problems arise.
The business may appear to be performing well because customers are walking through the door and walking out with the goods on credit.

A Minute on Your Mortgage By Graham Doessel Making your payments In these difficult economic times it is so easy to put off making your home loan payments, but this can have far-reaching negative effects. Let me give you a couple of examples. •
Most lenders will charge you a higher rate of interest for the period your home loan is in arrears. This means, even when you do make your payment. You’re probably likely to still be behind due to the arrears charges. Depending on your lender. This can get out of control very quickly.
You may be charged dishonor fees, by both your lender and your financial institution.
Being late with even one repayment can seriously affect your ability to refinance your home loan for a period of up to 6 months, as most conforming lenders will look quite harshly on your inability to meet your commitments.
It can cost you hundreds of dollars in hidden fees and charges just for being a few days late. What can I do? Communicate, Communicate, Communicate - If you know you’re going to be late, call your lender in advance and work out a solution. Often, many fees can be waived just simply by contacting your lender first. The more you communicate with them, the more likely they are to be able to help you. Don’t get stung unnecessarily, talk to your lender! Graham is the Founder of Mortgage Now, Australia’s largest exclusively nonconforming brokerage. THE CHEEK OF IT ALL By Phillipa Hogg From celebrities to the catwalk; high distinct cheekbones are all the rage. No need to stress though; the average mere mortal doesn’t need to have Naomi Campbell’s genes to achieve this lusted after trend all that is needed is a great application of a highlighter. A highlighter can describe many products from a simple blush to a bronzer, a cream , a tint or even a shimmer. All of these highlighters are great for creating more prominence of the cheekbones, which in turn leads to a slimmer more centred face.
Depending on the product and the colour being used a wide variety of looks can be created. To create a fresh faced dewy look the best bet is to go for a pink or peach based cream blush; applied with finger tips to the apple of the cheeks blending upwards towards the corner of the eye, this look is quite sheer so less is always more.
N E W
For a more golden or earthy look; a power bronzer is a good option; to apply this an angled bronzer brush in a medium size is the best tool, with the brush to go around the bronzer power lightly then tap away excess. Brush the apples of the cheeks and forehead lightly, down to the nose, and along the jaw line – but only where the sun would naturally kiss the skin. The final look is the lightly flushed lady like blush – this can be achieved with either a tint or a light coloured powder blush. This look is best achieved when just applied on the apples of the cheek. Great cheekbones can complete any outfit; now the only challenge is finding the right colour for you and giving it a go. Do you have a make-up or beauty question? Why don’t you send Phillipa an email at qanda@ balancedmedia.com.au and she will get back to you, with the best questions being featured in the next edition.

The Eight Habits of Highly Healthy People By Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS For years, business and motivational gurus have known that there are basic habits that seem to predict professional success and excellence. Books like The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by motivational speaker and business guru Stephen Covey, which has sold over 15 million copies alone, shows that people are hungry for the secrets of success. We don’t yet have the perfect formula for long life, happiness, and physical health, but a little careful distillation of the massive amount of research on health and longevity reveals that cultivating eight basic habits will significantly increase the odds of your living long, well, and happily -- in a robust, healthy, weight-appropriate body. 1.
Eat your vegetables. No kidding --and I’m talking at least 9 servings a day. Unless you’re following the most stringent first stage of the Atkins Diet, you should be able to consume 60-120 grams of carbs a day (depending on your weight and exercise level), and you’d have to eat a stockyard full of spinach to get to that amount. Every major study of long-lived, healthy people shows that they eat a ton of plant foods. Nothing delivers antioxidants, fiber, flavonoids, indoles, and the entire pharmacopeia of disease fighting phytochemicals like stuff that grows in rich soil. Eat fish and/or take fish oil. The omega-3’s found in cold-water fish like salmon deserve the title of “wellness molecule of the century.” They lower the risk of heart disease,
they lower blood pressure, they improve mood, and they’re good for the brain. And if you’re pregnant, they may make your kid smarter! 3.
Connect. And I’m not talking about the internet. In virtually every study of people who are healthy and happy into their 9th and 10th decades, social connections are one of the “prime movers” in their life. Whether church, family, volunteer work, or community, finding something you care about that’s bigger than you, that you can connect with and that involves other people (or animals) -- will extend your life, increase your energy, and make you happier -always.
4. Sleep well. If you’re low in energy, gaining weight, grumpy, and looking haggard, guess what? Chances are you’re not sleeping long enough or well enough. By sleeping “well,” I mean uninterrupted sleep, in the dark -- without the television on, in a relaxing environment. Nothing nourishes, replenishes, and restarts the system like 7-9 hours sleep. Hint: start by going to bed an hour early. And if you’ve got a computer in the bedroom, banish it! 5.
Exercise every day. Forget this 20 minutes three times a week stuff. Long-lived people are doing things like farm chores at 4:30 in the morning! Our Paleolithic ancestors traveled an average of 20 miles per day. Our bodies were designed to move on a regular basis. New studies show that merely 30 minutes a day of walking not only reduces the risk
of most serious diseases, but can even grow new brain cells!2 6. Practice gratitude. By making a list of things you’re grateful for, you focus the brain on positive energy. Gratitude is incompatible with anger and stress. Practice using your underutilized “right brain” and spread some love. Focusing on what you’re grateful for -- even for five minutes a day -- has the added benefit of being one of the best stress-reduction techniques on the planet. 7.
Drink red wine or eat grapes. The resveratrol in dark grapes is being studied for its effect on extending life, which it seems to do for almost every species studied. (So does eating about one third less food, by the way.) If you’ve got a problem with alcohol, you can get resveratrol from grapes, peanuts, or supplements. (And if you’re a woman, and you choose the alcohol option, make sure you’re getting folic acid every day.)
Not one of these “habits” will hurt you, all will benefit you, and some may make the difference between life and death. And it’s never too late to start cultivating them. Enjoy the journey! Dr. Bowden is a well known expert on weight loss, nutrition and health. He’s a board certified nutrition specialist with a Master’s degree in psychology and the author of five books including The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth and his latest book The Most Effective Cures on Earth. For more information go to www.jonnybowdon.com
8. Get the sugar out. The number one enemy of vitality, health, and longevity is not fat, it’s sugar. Sugar’s effect on hormones, mood, immunity, weight, and possibly even cancer cells is enormous -- and it’s all negative. To the extent that you can remove it from your diet, you will be adding years to your life and life to your years. This list may not be perfect and it may not be complete, but it’s a start. As my dear grandmother used to say, “Couldn’t hurt.”
