Home & Property News Home & Property News Spain ranked third best EU country for property investment
According to a study, Spain ranks as the third most attractive country in Europe for investment in real estate, just behind the United Kingdom and Germany. Almost a fifth (19%) of European investors say they are interested in Spanish properties, compared to a rate of less than 5% just a year ago. Similarly, the report entitled 'European Real Estate Investor Intention 2014', prepared from the opinions collected from 400 European investors, ranks Madrid as the second favourite European city in which to invest in real estate assets, compared with the ninth position the capital occupied the previous year. In addition, the study places Barcelona in the ‘top ten’ of cities for European investors for the first time, while other capitals like Paris or Warsaw dropped down the list. Analysis reveals that, overall, Europe “seems to have regained the favour of investors” which, in their opinion, is demonstrated by the fact that 70% of them chose Western Europe as “the world’s most attractive region for real estate investment”. The report also notes an “increase in investor appetite”. In fact, it indicates that 67% of the European investors consulted expect that their activity in real estate will be greater this year. El Economista reported that 39% of the investors interested in the property sector are interested in office buildings, while, in contrast, interest in commercial assets decreased. The biggest increase was recorded in the so-called alternative real estate assets, such as holidays homes or homes for the elderly.
Foreigners spend 12% more to buy a property than the Spanish. Many experts think that the price of housing has bottomed. Home values have fallen over 40% in the recession. Some international investors and customers see a unique opportunity in Spain. 6 THE MARKET PLACE
Statistics compliled by the Ministry of Development show that in the fourth quarter of 2013, foreigners buy homes that are more expensive than Spanish ones. The average price of homes purchased by foreigners has a cost of 153,000 Euros, compared with 135,500 paid for by Spaniards. In 2013 property has sold the best in tourist areas, in Alicante for example there were 3,400 transactions and in Malaga 1,900 transactions. Barcelona and the Balearics followed with over 1,000 transactions. Non Spanish citizens spent on average 214,300 euros on property in Malaga.
Department for Infrastructure announces a plan to drive the property market The Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Rafael Catala has announced the launch of a plan of cooperation between the government and regional governments to ensure market unity in the property market and urban planning. The objective is to enable operators of housing urban and land planning with lower costs, more efficient and beneficial interests to enable them to operate in a more productive way. The agreement is the result of a meeting at the Sectoral Conference on Housing held by the Department of Infrastructure, attended by directors and representatives from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. Catala says once the law is approved it will guarantee market unity and help housing and land planning through the Interdepartmental Working Group.
Spain’s February unemployment registers first drop in 7 years
February is not a stable month with regards to employment behaviour as, throughout the recorded period (which began in 1996), it has decreased on ten occasions (including this year) and has risen on nine others. The decline in February this year is the first since 2007, when that year the number of unemployed people fell by 7,233. In later years, coinciding with the economic crisis, unemployment always rose in February, especially in 2009, when 154,000 more people were registered unemployed.
The sale of homes grows almost 60% in January and prices rebound 9%.
The number of house sales recorded a growth of 59% in January while prices rebounded by 8.9%, according to the General Council of Notaries. This indicates a normalisation of the property market after the end of the fiscal home ownership incentives in early 2013. The number of transactions was 23,368 in January, a 59% increase from the year earlier. Purchases of family homes were up 80%, resale homes rose by 48% while new properties also rose doubling the amount from January 2013. Notaries confirm that the average price per square metre experienced strong growth in January.

Could the Sony Xperia Tablet Z be the iPad Killer? Since their split from Ericsson in 2011 Sony have battled hard to achieve a status they once owned in the mobile arena. Independent Technology Review by Peter McMullan, www.tracyandmatt.co.uk
013 was a very successful year for Sony. After releasing an array of satisfactory phones using a lot of the alphabet for their names they came across their most successful. The Z phone was followed on by the successful Z1. Sony announced their Xperia tablet Z in January 2013 and released it in May 2013. Still currently priced between £349.99 and £379.99 its main competition lies with the iPad air. At the time of the original press release it was to be the lightest 10 inch tablet around, feeling threatened by a lighter product Apple rushed production for the iPad air. The difference in weight is minimal; the Sony tablet Z weighs 495g, the iPad air weighs 469g compared to the heavier and bulkier iPad 4 weighing a massive 652g.
Could the Sony Xperia Tablet Z be the iPad killer? Underneath the 10.1 inch HD reality display there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 Ghz processor, with 2GB of ram. There is a 16GB on board storage, which can be expanded via the micro SD slot on the bottom of the tablet. The tablet is splash resistant, which is a nice feature; however it should not to be submerged in water like the Z1. Each port is covered by a removable tab, although these tabs appear to be a bit flimsy. The tablet according to my wife was very rectangular and too big. For a tech addict it gives you perfect widescreen viewing with a minimal letter box.
details then connect to the internet and boom - you are ready to go. The home screen is the familiar Sony setup. This is all customisable. The use of both info bars at the top and bottom is very clever.
The top info bar starting from left to right has the Google search button, and voice search button, this is followed by space for four app shortcuts, set as the camera and chrome I found this really helpful when using the tablet. Following this space you have the number of home screens available, this is expandable up to seven, however I would only use three of these on any device I have. Multitasking small apps The small apps pre installed include browser, calculator, clip manager, notes, recorder, remote control and timer. They all function over what you are doing, for example if you have shopping to do online on a number of stores, make a note of what you have to buy and leave the note on the screen like a post it. In
the app store there is a number of these small apps, ranging from a mirror app to Facebook status widget.
Camera The 8 mega pixel camera is located at the back top left of the tablet. There are an array of features available. The camera is fantastic when using video calling apps like Skype, the front facing 2 mega pixel camera works really well with poor lighting conditions. There is a slideshow option within the gallery that allows you to show off your photos via various display options accompanied with music if you desire. This turns the tablet into an advanced digital photo frame. The images are of standard quality, they couldn’t replace your digital camera but this is what we have come to expect from a tablet camera. Whether or not you agree on them it seems that manufacturers will put on a camera of mediocre quality just to have one on the tablet. Sony decided to put an 8 mega pixel camera on the back of this tablet. I have experienced worse cameras on a tablet and was surprised at the richness and quality of some of the images and videos captured. Videos shoot at 1080p quality. Browsing on the internet is fantastic, landscape or portrait with chrome pre installed surfing is fast flowing. Also pre installed is the Sony movies app, with a wide selection of movies to buy or rent in standard or high definition. Personally I am a huge fan of Netflix and if there was a streaming option with the Sony movies I would consider continued on page 14

My son loved playing Minecraft on the 10 inch screen, as he ‘could see more’. All the games I tested on the tablet ran smoothly and it was quick to switch between applications and return to a game with no lag. The types of games we can now find in the play store are steadily getting better. The remote control aspect of the tablet was the main seller for me, being able to control any device with the tablet was just fantastic. Simply select add device, choose the device type and then the manufacturer. You can then choose a remote type of your liking, add or close buttons. I connected three televisions in my house and my sky box. If your device was not listed, you could programme the tablet to learn the remote control buttons by pointing the remote to the infra red. Sony has worked hard on this flagship tablet, making their tablet a household necessity rather than a novelty gadget. Over the past few weeks of testing the
tablet I found myself using it as a remote for the television, browsing internet, watching films, calling friends on Skype and playing games. I have rarely used my home pc and have now found myself becoming more tablet dependent. Tablets are replacing the home PC and laptops.
Conclusion The Sony Xperia Z tablet is a fantastic device. With the release of android 4.4 Kit Kat in the near future this tablet is proving to be a big contender for the heavy iPad. With Sony's new line up being announced within the coming months the successor of the tablet Z will be one to watch out for. In the mean time if you are fed up with your current tablet or want to treat the family or yourself to a fantastic high spec tablet I would recommend the Xperia Tablet Z.

Easter Bunny - The Spanish Rabbit As spring creeps up on us, baby rabbits appear by the roadside munching on or diving for cover in the spring herbage.
ssociated in the British mind with the “Easter bunny” it is associated, along with the Easter egg as a token of the fertility of spring. The fertility of the rabbit of course is not merely a token. It’s a matter of pure hard fact that rabbits breed like rabbits and a pair are theoretically able to produce over a thousand offspring in a year. They don’t totally overrun the planet because they are food for absolutely anything that eats meat. The bunny is not nearly as cute as it looks. For example it is coprophageous – meaning that it eats its own droppings. Actually there are two types of droppings – the hard little ones you see all over the campo and different soft droppings produced during the night which the rabbit re ingests. By eating its food twice it can make use of very tough foodstuffs like grasses, leaves, buds, tree bark, and roots and thistles. Back yard and commercial rabbit keepers will tell you that rabbits will turn a wide range of green stuff and table scraps into meat, and it’s the double digestive process that makes this possible. Life in the rabbit warren is not a barrel of laughs either. The rabbit is native to Spain and is distributed world-wide only through the activity of man. However it cannot stand the Spanish climate in summer. It cannot breed when the temperature reaches 35 and it drops dead at forty degrees centigrade. This is because it cannot sweat and has poorly developed means of losing body heat. So although it is part of the family of hares that includes the brown and mountain hares of the UK and the jack rabbits and cottontails of the USA , all of whom live in scrapes or nests above ground, the European wild rabbit, because it evolved in Spain, has had to develop a life below ground in the cool earth if it is to survive. It’s Latin name, Oryctolagus cuniculus means ‘a hare-like digger of underground passages’. And it is “crepuscular”, which means that it only lives on the surface of the earth in the half light of dawn or the dusk of the evening. It is in these warrens, housing colonies of rabbits guarded by very territorial bucks, that young rabbits or kits are born in underground nests lined by fur that the doe plucks from her breast. The sexual act between rabbits is less than romantic
Home of the Lynx, almost extinct, and its prey the rabbit, now on the “vulnerable” list 16 THE MARKET PLACE
The wild rabbit is a “key species” in Spain, being virtually the sole source of food for the Spanish Lynx and the Imperial Eagle and not very cute. The buck urinates on the doe and then mates with her. The act takes a few seconds and there is no bonding between the male and the female. The breeding season for rabbits lasts three-quarters of the year (not the hot months) and the does don’t have an estrous or ”heat” cycle, so are ready to mate at any time. They don’t have a menstrual cycle either because they are induced ovulators, which means that sexual intercourse stimulates them to ovulate. Immediately after the sex act, another egg is released for fertilization and this accounts for the massive breeding rate in rabbits. Rabbits gestate for only 30 days, and usually have litters of between 4 and 12 babies (kits). Once the babies are born, the doe can mate and get pregnant again the following day. In a balanced ecology the rabbit population would remain stable because there would be enough of the right kind of predators to wipe out almost all of the offspring during their first few weeks of life, but where the rabbit has been injudiciously introduced as in Australia, or the ecology has been otherwise unbalanced for example by the killing of top predators by farmers, a plague of rabbits can result. Perhaps it was the sight of teeming rabbits shaping the coast with their burrowing, that induced the Phoenicians when they continued on page 18

first encountered Iberia around 500 BC to name the country i-shepan-im, which means the land of rabbits. The Roman name Hispania comes from this Phoenician name, and España, or Spain mutates from this name. So the humble rabbit has given Spain its name, shaped its landscape and is the key predated mammal, supporting at least forty of the higher carnivores of Spain. It is astonishing then to find that populations of Spanish rabbit within the natural range have declined an estimated 95% since 1950, and 80% in Spain since 1975. This is due to disease, habitat loss, and human killing. These numbers are based on estimates from a protected area in Spain, Doñana National Park, and the relative decline elsewhere in the range. The rabbit now almost meets the Red List Criteria for “Vulnerable”. Rabbits were domesticated for food. The Romans simply put a fence around the warren housing a wild colony and periodically flushed them out with dogs and ferrets. Rabbits were brought to the UK by the Romans and then by the Normans who set up artificial warrens for a reliable meat supply through the winter months. Domestication, which alters the physical conformity of the animal is relatively recent, and today the domesticated or farmed rabbit is a very different animal from the wild rabbit, at least when it comes to eating one. Most butchers’ rabbits are farmed. The meat is white and delicate, similar to chicken. The wild rabbit is of unknown age and is almost certain to be tougher with a stronger “gamey” flavour.
An authentic Rabbit Paella... give it a try ! With all rabbit and especially with the wild ones, treat the legs differently from the saddle or body of the beast. Cut off the head and the front and back legs and simmer in a litre of water or half and half water and wine with three crushed cloves of garlic, a chopped up unskinned onion, a rough chopped carrot and a stick of celery. Colour with a little soaked saffron and simmer for about 20 minutes. Then strain, throw away the veg and rabbit head, and shred the flesh from the legs when cool. Keep the stock. You now have an excellent base for a paella – an authentic one, not that coastal muck that’s full of seafood! Fry your rice and mix with the shredded meat. Pour on the boiling stock, stir once, then simmer without stirring. When the rice begins to absorb, push in slices of the rabbit saddle and some chopped asparagus – wild if you can get it. Let the paella cook till the rice is just al dente remembering it continues to cook when you take it off the heat. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and finish with a handful of chopped roast almonds. Flash fry the rabbit’s liver and put it on the top. The delicious flavour of spring!

Car News First Driving Impressions – Jaguar F-Type Coupe, Global Press Launch, Barcelona/Lleida. When we received the programme/itinerary from Jaguar a few days before we left, it looked pretty hectic, and many kilometres to drive during two days in Spain. Two different hotels, four flights, track and road driving in the F-Type Coupe. A traffic jam high up in the mountains due to a truck breaking down...
aguar do have plenty of heritage and history in the sports car market, with just about everyone in the world knowing about the iconic E-Type, a true classic - but will the F-Type carry on that tradition? We stayed in Barcelona the first night, then took a flight from Barcelona airport to Lleida. The taxi from the terminal took 22 minutes to the runway, and the flight took 18 minutes. We drove the V6 S from Lleida airport to the Motorland Circuit in Aragon, a track used most days of the year for testing and motorcycle racing. It is 3.32 miles long with a 1.05 mile long straight down the back. We drove the V6 S with its 380ps 3.0-litre Supercharged petrol engine that goes from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds around the track and tested its acceleration, braking, handling and cornering, and I have to say the engineers have got it absolutely right. The Coupe feels as solid as a rock and sticks to the road as though it was on rails, it did not move an inch. Down the back straight with full power, foot to the floor it just kept going, and you got to the stage where you dare not look at the speedometer, as you were going so fast with the left-hand corner approaching fairly rapidly. It was a case of both eyes on the tarmac, and braking at the last second to go safely around the tight left corner. The brakes were superb and went from ‘very-fast’ to almost zero in a tiny amount of seconds. It did take a few laps to get it right, and get the confidence to push it to the limit. We then went to another part of the circuit 20 THE MARKET PLACE
to drive the F-Type Coupe R with its 5.0-Litre V8 550ps Supercharged engine around some wet tarmac to test the cars new Torque Vectoring system. It has some very technical details, but in a nutshell the inner wheels are braked on corners to help stability and enhances agility and handling to the limit. I’m not entirely sure how it works, but after driving the Coupe in very wet conditions, and high speed around some tight corners, I do now know that is does work very well. After the circuit it was back in the V6 S and up into the mountains, and some extremely twisty roads that took us high up, with earspopping and some fairly steep drops both sides of the road. The interior is very well finished with some nice touches, and very high quality materials. The seats we had were good for holding you in place around the tight corners but did stick in your back a bit and for normal, everyday driving I would find too uncomfortable. We did try adjusting them, but still were not right for my back, or maybe I am just getting too old for all this sporty stuff! The A-pillars from outside look good, a nice angle, but from the inside they were enormous, with small speakers in them, and large door mirrors, which restrict your view, especially on those mountain roads. But I guess the designers and engineers have to think about rigidity and safety ahead of good all-round vision. The boot is a reasonable size, and with some ‘soft-luggage’ you could get plenty in it. It is a pure two-seater and Jaguar have not tried to squeeze two small child seats in the rear, which helps luggage space and makes the
cabin look and feel like a true sports car. The next morning we got into a Coupe-R and again back into the hills to test the cars handling, engine, and more importantly, its brakes, which all worked exactly as they should. We went to the top of a mountain where the scenery and views were spectacular, almost as spectacular as the car, but getting there was not easy, as the road narrowed, the drops were sheer, and we had tractors and all those Fiat Panda 4X4’s to contend with, and overtake when it was safe. The F-Type has an Active-Exhaust system which can be made louder if you press a button near the gear-shift. But even with it turned off, it is pretty noisy. Going back down the mountain roads it was crackling and popping all the time. And going through the small, sleepy villages we had to go extremely slowly, so as not to wake the locals from their siesta. I can imagine it would be very difficult creeping in and out of home late at night or early morning without annoying the neighbours. The exterior of this car is a masterpiece - so clever, and so in proportion. After driving the V6 S, and the V8 the one I would choose without any hesitation would be the 380ps version. It is around £25,000 cheaper, and offers just as much in terms of looks and design, and still has more than enough power. Jaguar sold 77,000 cars worldwide last year, its best year since 2005. In the next couple of years it will have more new models to add to its range: the ‘Baby-Jag’ the XE and the Large SUV. But despite its success in North America and the UK, Jaguar is still relatively unknown in Europe and breaking into that market with a competitor to the A4, 3-Series and C-Class is not going to be easy for them. The introduction of the ‘Halo’ F-Type will certainly help them to become more recognised. Jaguar expect that the F-Type Convertible will take 40% of global sales, and the Coupe 60%. Prices start from £51,235 for the F-Type Coupe with 340ps (did not drive this car on the Press Launch). The V6 S is £60,235, this model is expected to take 50% of sales, and it's £85,000 for the R-Coupe. Combined MPG and C02 Emissions..? Well, who cares when you're buying a powerful Sports Car……!!! Then back to Lleida airport, and the 22 minute flight back to Barcelona, then the BA flight to Heathrow. A great couple of days, plenty of driving in this very British Sports Coupe…. By Martin Ward.

A magical time in southern Spain Incense and candles burn, trumpets blare and drums beat, penitents are covered in colourful tunics and conical hoods that march slowly through the night. Life sized statues of Jesus and Mary are carried by many people, rocking as they go, making the several ton structures appear to hover through the air.
his ritual is played out every year at Easter time or Semana Santa as it is called here in Spain. This time of year is extremely poignant for many citizens in Southern Spain as often they have spent all year planning and preparing for the spectacle. Some of the biggest processions are of course held in Seville and Malaga, these date back to medieval times and are organised by brotherhoods or cofradias who have their own colours. But you don't have to travel far to enjoy the atmosphere of Semana Santa; all local towns and villages have their own processions.
The Semana Santa Tradition Each wooden or plaster throne is a depiction of the Passion or a grieving Mary and some are centuries old artistic masterpieces. They are tended to by the cofradias, many of which formed back in the 1500s and 1600s ; some of the thrones from back then are still carried today. Female spectators dress in mourning, wearing black dresses with a lace scarf and headdress, or mantilla held by a comb made of shell. Some associations have started to allow women to march in recent years, but legend has it that women have always marched ; secretly donning the face covering hoods of a penitent or nazareno. Nowadays, many parents enlist their children in the brotherhoods at a very young age because it takes years to move up the ranks and earn a prestigious spot in a procession, such as the coveted position of carrying a great cross at the head. Most processions are at night, and the Nazarenos carry long candles to light the way on the procession, an arduous journey that can take over 12 hours. Some walk barefoot or even with shackles. In some of the biggest processions, a group of Roman soldiers follows. The Nazarenos are followed by altar boys, some carrying incense. Then comes the main attraction, the thrones or floats which are decorated with flowers and candles. They are very heavy and are carried by costaleros, named for the sackcloth they wear. Anywhere from two dozen to several dozen costaleros will carry the throne, and will set it down and raise it back up again periodically (their toil can draw applause from

appreciative crowds). The costaleros, who can be seen reaching for water during breaks, are guided by an overseer, or capataz, who calls out commands or uses a hammer to signal directions. Obviously, carrying a paso weighing several tons through the city translates into hours of backbreaking work for the costaleros. The biggest brotherhoods parade up to three thrones. While some processions are eerily silent, others are followed by a brass band that plays mournful music on trumpets, drums and cymbals. Sometimes singers along the parade route will offer a saeta, a religious form of improvised singing that sounds similar to flamenco and is often sung from balconies. The procession peaks when it finally reaches the church or cathedral. Processions in Andalusia begin on Palm Sunday and reach their pinnacle after midnight on Good Friday, a time known as La Madrugada. Ask at your local tourist office for timetables, names of the must-see processions and where to view them. Bring a map and allow plenty of time, as navigating a maze of blocked streets can be difficult. Expect the unexpected, such as tourist sites closing early or processions being cancelled by rain. If it rains the precious thrones are not paraded through the streets as they are so old. Kids can collect a souvenir prized by local children: a ball of wax formed by asking the Nazarenos for drips from their candles, which can be of various colours.
Holy Mary or Maria Santisima is the work of sculpter Don Juan Navas Parejo in 1950 and is part of the Velez Malaga processions Semana Santa in Southern Spain means pasos (floats or thrones) and processions, but there’s also special treats that are associated with the week. Comparable to Cadbury Eggs and chocolate bunnies, torrijas are small slices of bread soaked in sugar, egg, and either milk, honey, syrup, or wine. After being fried in olive oil, torrijas make for a sweet indulgence during Semana Santa, and they won’t be hard to find because almost every bakery and confectionary shop has their own version of the torrija. The activities during Holy Week in Southern Spain really are some of the best in the world, so make the most of being in this part of the world and join in the festivities and celebrations.

Want to keep your brain in tip top condition? We look at the natural ways to halt memory loss and fight dementia.
or many people it's not wrinkles that worry them as they age but fading memory and a loss of mental function. If you have ever watched a loved one suffer with Alzheimers you will be well aware of the pain and distress it causes to the whole family. It is estimated that around 500 people are diagnosed with some form of dementia every day in the UK and this figure is likely to rise with an increasingly ageing population. Neuroscientists agree that memory loss is a disease that attacks the brain 30 to 40 years before any symptoms appear. The good news is that a number of research studies indicate that your risk of developing dementia and Alzheimers could be reduced through nutrition and lifestyle changes, and the sooner you start making the right changes the better your chances of staying sharp.
of developing Alzeimers, it really is just one small piece of the puzzle. One of the problems is that the memory decline can happen subtly. Our brain naturally shrinks as we age but in Alzheimers this is speeded up. Many of us may feel our memory gets worse as we age but for some this can develop into mild cognitive impairment and potentially progress to dementia. What we do know is that dementia is linked to damage to our brain cells (known as neurons). This may be caused by a variety of factors including inflammation in the body, oxidative damage, changes to oxygen supply and energy production in the brain, excess sugar, stress as well as a lack of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, essential fats and phospholipids.
Am I at Risk?
One of the simplest ways to assess What Causes Memory Loss? your risk for developing Alzheimers is It's tempting to assume that the loss of to measure your level of homocysteine. cognitive function is primarily related This is an amino acid that builds up in to genetic factors alone. While research the blood if there is an insufficiency of has shown the presence of certain genes various B vitamins, particularly B12, (namely APOE4 genes) increases the risk folate and B6. Numerous studies have 26 THE MARKET PLACE
shown raised homocysteine levels increase your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. This appears to arise from damage to cells, cell death and disruption of the brain's blood supply. Studies have shown that supplementing with B vitamins in people with high homocysteine led to a reduction in brain shrinkage and mental decline. Homocysteine can be measured in the blood. Normally a fasting blood test is recommended. This can be undertaken via a nutritionist or GP or you can order a home test kit from various internet sites. Alzheimers disease risk roughly doubles if your homocysteine score is over 14. The average score is around nine with under seven being considered optimal.
TAKE ACTION If your score is above nine then consider supplementing with homocysteine lowering B vitamins and nutrients and increase your intake of folate rich foods such as leafy green veg, lentils, nuts, seeds, beans, plus lean meat, eggs and fish for B12. Ideally your supplement should include 400-800mcg folic acid, continued on page 28

Eating Oily Fish can reduce Alzheimers risk by up to 60%
Getting in the Fats Studies have shown that eating oily fish at least twice a week reduces your risk of developing Alzheimers by up to 60 percent. Good choices include those low in mercury and toxins such as mackerel, herring, kipper, salmon, trout, anchovy and sardines. Oily fish contains the omega 3 fats DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Vegetarian sources of omega 3 fats include walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, pumpkin seed, tofu and leafy greens. Over 60% of the dry weight of your brain is composed of fatty tissue and one third is either phospholipids or fats such as DHA. These are essential for healthy cell membranes and brain cell function. They also form part of the protection around nerve fibres and are very anti infammatory. Phospholipids include phosphatidlycholine (PC), the building block for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine that is vital for memory. Good food sources are eggs and fish. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is concentrated in the brain and can help cognitive function as well as reduce the health damaging effects of stress. By increasing your intake you may help provide protection from cognitive decline. Other beneficial fats are coconut oil, which is a source of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) that the body utilises for energy production and olive oil, which has anti inflammatory and anti depressant like properties. Recent studies have also suggested a lack of vitamin D may be involved in cognitive decline - another reason to eat oily fish and get out in the sun!
TAKE ACTION Eat oily fish at least twice a week. Each day take one to two tbsp of flaxseed or flaxseed oil. For PC, include plenty of eggs each week and take one tbsp of lecithin granules and or lipids powder. For PS, increase your intake of fish and consider supplementing with 100 to 300mg daily. Cook with cococut oil or olive oil. Most people will also benefit from a vitamin D supplement. 28 THE MARKET PLACE
Protect your Mind Your brain cells are particularly vulnerable to damage so they need protection. Antioxidants can help protect the brain from damage. Certain antioxidants appear particularly important including vitamins A, C and E, carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione and n-acetyl cysteine (NAC). There are many plant antioxidants too which play a protective role. These include quercetin (apples, onions), resveratrol (berries, grapes), isoflavones (beans, soy), anthocyanidins (berries), curcumin (tumeric), catechins and epicatechin (green tea, cocoa). The herb ginkgo biloba protects against oxidation as well as improving circulation and boost concentration.
TAKE ACTION Fill half of your plate with colourful vegetables, eat a large handful of berries each day, add turmeric liberally to foods, drink 5 to 6 cups of green tea and treat yourself to high quality dark or raw chocolate. Consider taking an antioxidant formula if necessary.
Ditch the Sugar One of the dangers of excess glucose in your blood is cell damage through a process known as glycation. Excess sugar can also lead to inflammation and plaques forming in the brain.
TAKE ACTION Seek a fasting blood test from your GP. Switch to meals based around quality lean protein and plenty of vegetables. Cut out sugary drinks, alcohol, fruit juices, sugar and sweeteners and refined white carbohydrates. Have a little wholegrain such as wholemeal bread, rice, quinoa, sweet potato, oats or rye.
Lifestyle Matters It's not just what you eat that's important. Tackling stress, exercising daily, reducing your intake of toxins such as heavy metals and staying mentally active are all important too.

Decoration - Floral Arrangements
Colour blocking isn't just a fashion trend - create visual interest in your space by having several monochromatic flower arrangements.
With better weather coming our way, harness the power of a great floral arrangement.
here are many reasons we buy flowers: from treating ourselves to weekend pick-me-ups, to creating a gorgeous table-decoration or to welcome a guest. And now that we are hitting better weather, we’re craving greenery in our homes even more. For most of us, our choice of floral arrangement is limited to what’s being sold at our local market, or the kind that our mother always liked. Although that will do for many situations, sometimes it’s necessary to get out of our floral rut. With so many types of flowers and arrangements the

possibilities are endless, but the key is to think of how they interact with the design of your space. Be creative with which ones you choose, consider something unexpected. Is your space made up of earth tones? An arrangement made up of poppies will create an impactful punch. I am a big fan of wild flowers for giving off an uncontrived yet fresh feel. Spend some extra time thinking about what would look best and head to your local florist, or even better head up into the campo and gather your own, especially in April when all the lovely spring wild flowers are in full bloom.
Be aware of how your choice of flowers operates within the rest of the space these pink tipped roses mimic the modern print's colour application.

Keep faith with the boys from Europe History doesn't lie - Golf's fist major of the year, The Masters at Augusta National, has traditionally yielded rich pickings for the home boys. But with World number one Tiger Woods struggling with a back injury and American players occupying just four of the current world top ten spots, there's never been a better time for a foreign raider to spoil the party. Of course world number three Henrik Stenson along with major winners Rory McIlroy and Graham MacDowell spring instantly to mind. But we aren't talking about the obvious candidates here. Market Place looks at the chances of five less-fancied Europeans who have the ability to upset the Star-Spangled applecart...

It's 23 years since diminutive Welshman Ian Woosnam pulled on the famous green jacket and fellow countryman Donaldson will be hoping to follow suit. It took him 255 attempts before finally winning his first European Tour event (the Irish Open in July 2012), fortunately he didn't have to wait so long for his second victory, winning the Abu Dhabi Championship in January 2013. Donaldson has only ever played at Augusta once, missing the cut last year, but don't be put off - the current Race to Dubai leader has already had a second place on the PGA Tour this year in last month's cadillac Championship and there's likely more to come.
A timely return to form at the Arnold Palmer Invitational saw him tied for 20th place, despite a quadruple bogey 8 in his final round, which otherwise could have seen him finish in the top 5. Augusta National has always brought the best out in Poulter, a fact rubber stamped by two top ten finishes in the last four years. The world number 19 has always been a big occasion golfer - his enviable Ryder Cup record bears testimony to that - and maybe it's time for the man from Hitchin to add that all elusive Major to his list of achievements.
The last time we saw a debonair Frenchman in contention for a Major he ended up with wet feet and a red face after throwing away his chances in Carnoustie's Barry Burn. But this 23 year old from Cannes has no plans to follow Jean Van de Velde into the history books as a loser. He only turned pro in 2010 and since capturing his first professional win at the Turkish Airlines Open in November, he followed up with a masterful performance at the World Matchplay Championships in February, finishing second to Jason Day, and earning a special temporary membership to the PGA Tour in the process. Ice cool Dubuisson looks to have no problem playing under pressure and will surely relish his first trip to Augusta. 34 THE MARKET PLACE
One of the coolest sportsmen on the planet, and championing the cause of middle-aged blokes with beer bellies everywhere! The 50 year old wine and cigar afficionado from Malaga is currently enjoying some of the best form of his long career. With two top 20's in his last 3 PGA Tour starts, Jimenez will be hoping to strike a blow for the oldies at Augusta, and it would come as no great surprise if he upset the form book to become the oldest ever Masters winner - a record currently held by Jack Nicklaus when he triumphed in 1986 at the ripe old age of 46 years 82 days. Never a long hitter of the golf ball Miguel is able to pick his way round a tight golf course with a combination of accuracy from the tee box and superb fairway wood/long iron play. Solid record at Augusta, making the weekend in 11 of his 14 starts here - including three top tens.
He's probably the most obvious candidate on our list but let's not forget that Luke has never won a Major, and just two years ago he was World Number One before a mediocre run of form saw him tumble down the world rankings. But recent weeks have seen a return to form for the 36 year old from Hemel Hempstead, especially in the putting department. Not a big hitter, Luke relies on his enviable short game and that will stand him in great stead around Augusta's slick greens. With two top ten finishes in his last three outings, Luke could be hitting peak form at the right time.

Club Petanca holds its first competition at new venue. Buena Vista Petanca Club held its first competition on Monday 17 March at its new venue in Nerja. The Founders Trophy, a random pairs event, attracted a maximum 28 players and was held at the Verano Azul in Nerja, which the club relocated to earlier in the month. The competition was won by David Abbott and Mike Parsons with three wins and plus 25 points. There was a tie for the runners-up place, requiring in a “sudden death” one end playoff between Reg Firth and Joan Hart and Martin Cook and Jill Parsons, which resulted in a win for Reg and Joan. Buena Vista moved to the Verano Azul following the Junta de Andalucia’s decision to remove the merenderos from the town’s Playazo Playa – one of which, Merendero Pepe Mesa, had been the club’s venue for the past two years or so. Murex - A new Brew in Velez Two businessmen in Velez Malaga have produced a new beer called Murex which is completely natural and contains no additives. Murex beer has been brewed by adding sugar cane at the primary stage of fermentation, normally this is added at a later stage to colour the beer. The grinding of the malt and bottling is done in a natural way without using gases or additives as most brewers do. Murex are manufactuing the beer at their facility in Torre del Mar; at the moment they are producing 1,000 litres a week for distribution to wine shops, gourmet shops and catering businesses in the province of Malaga. They have a total of 5 varieties of which two are amber beers. There is also a sugar cane variety.

Our entrepreneurial family members are: Paco, Mari, Carlos and Francisco (or Fran as his friends call him). Over the years we have looked for opportunities to expand our business, and in June 2011 we opened La BraserĂa de Pacomari at Calle Cristo 31, offering quality grilled meats. More recently, in March 2013, we opened an Italian restaurant called Rucula (rocket), opposite La BraserĂa, at Calle Cristo 34. We like to think we can offer the most complete gastronomic experience to our customers. You can find more information about our restaurants on our website: www.pacomari.es.

Now after many years in the field of local hospitality, Restaurant Pacomari is recognized in the town of Nerja as a symbol of quality and a good place to eat. Over the years the restaurant has undergone several major renovations. We started 1981 with just 50m2, today we have about 300m2 of restaurant accommodating up to 170 people. Our courtyard dining area was decorated with a Moorish feel in 2000. Here, visitors can enjoy a good time both for lunch and dinner. Dropped your toast? No problem - just pick it up quickly! Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to research carried out at Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences.
most likely to transfer from laminate or tiled surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds.
The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis to the '5 second rule' the urban myth about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less. People have long followed the 5 second rule, but until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.
The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the fivesecond rule. The survey showed that 87% of people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so, 55% of those that would, or have, eaten food dropped on the floor are women and 81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the 5 second rule
The study monitored the transfer of the common bacterias E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus from a variety of indoor floor types (carpet, laminate and tiled surfaces) to toast, pasta, biscuits and a sticky sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and 40 THE MARKET PLACE
Professor Hilton who conducted the study said: "Our study showed surprisingly that a large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most likely to do so. But they are also more likely to follow the 5 second rule, which our research has shown to be much more than an old wives tale."

July 23rd - Aug. 21st
Sept. 24th - Oct. 23rd
Some times it pays to be lazy, and to enjoy having nowhere to go and nothing to do. This is one of those times. Do not move unless you have to this month. You are rapidly approaching a time in which you are going to be so busy and so in demand that you will wish you had a few moments to do your own thing.
The cosmos has sent you a lot of inspiring dreams and ideas lately, but you would not get very far unless you start to take action in life, particularly for this month. Now make time to decide what you really want. Once you know then make a pledge that you would not give up until you have achieved it. Beliefs can be as solid as a rock, especially if you have identified yourself with them for a lifetime. They are responsible for the experiences you have in life both good and bad. The planets this month are encouraging you to change your thinking, especially if it is not working in your favour during these days. Your focus seems to be on your health and wellbeing for the month ahead. One minute you are keen to get into shape ready for life, and the next you have forgotten your goal and are back in cruise control. But if you see the error of your ways you can easily accomplish anything. Be persistent with your goals Libra for this month.
The desire to take a gamble may be stronger than ever in this month. A powerful astrological aspect suggests that it may be hard to resist temptation in your life. The more you think about it, the more appealing it appears to be. Think carefully and act Sagittarius wisely Sagittarius. rd nd Nov. 23 - Dec. 22
Aquarius 21st - Feb. 19th
An intuitive leap of faith may encourage you to take on board an idea that you have been mulling over for the past couple of months. This is not something new. It has been bubbling away in your creative cauldron for some time, and has gradually been developing in strength. You may not go all the way with it for now, but you may feel moved to create a plan of action.

You need to lay down a few new laws and reassess your boundaries in life. You may get some complaints at first, especially from your family who would not want you to change. But if you persist they will get the message. Issue an ultimatum both in your personal and professional space.
You may have had an experience that prevents you from enjoying some activity or the company of a certain person in life. You might have a phobia, like a fear of heights or a fear of closed spaces. But if you can detach from your old way of being and adopt a new perspective, you may find that what troubled you does so no longer. Your relationships may be the boon or the bane of your life for this month. One minute you feel on top of the world and the next you may be plunged into despair. But despite the ups and downs of this rollercoaster ride, you are secretly enjoying every moment during this month. During this month you have the opportunity to do a thousand things you have never done before. The secret is to follow your heart and do whatever turns you on. Make this a special time by getting involved in any activity that gives you a buzz. Whatever you do just love it! The ideas seem to be flowing thick and fast in your life for this month. But more than this, your imagination is also working overtime. Make sure that your thinking helps you to achieve all your goals, and is bringing you security and comfort. The more upbeat and positive you can be the better the results you can expect for this month. The world is your stage. You have many options open to you, just be willing to seize the opportunity. Do not let your attention wander from one thing to another and lose your focus. You would not achieve much if you do. Instead, try sticking with one idea or plan until you have attained a degree of success. Concentration is the key.

of monuments, with the medieval Arab Citadel, the Cathedral and various Mudejar-style buildings outstanding, although the most characteristic thing in the city are its districts with original cave dwellings. Yet it was under the Arab reign when the area really came into fruition, being a natural pass from the coast to the city of Granada, it rose to an important trading station protected by its hilltop Moorish fortress, the Alcazaba of Guadix. Now well past its glory days this Arab citadel presides over the town providing a spectacular view of the Barrio de las Cuevas, the cave quarter and main tourist attraction of Guadix. The Cathedral, built in the 16th century under the reign of the new Catholic Monarchs, makes an intriguing sight with its impressive minaret manifested as the church tower. The price? 95 euro pp based on 2 sharing a double room. Contact: Gail on 951067723, email phoenixsocialclub@ yahoo.co.uk or catch us on the web at www. phoenixsocialclub.co.uk'

The Sisters of the Good Samaritans Nerja Founded by Mother Irene in 1978 (known as the Mother Teresa of Chile although born in Leon, Spain), this congregation of nuns, originally from Chile, have been carrying out their work for over thirty five years. Inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan, they provide complex and long term care, assisted / supportive living and other specialized health care services for the elderly and the physically and mentally challenged, regardless of race or religious belief. • • • •
Fortunately for the local area, five of the sisters left Chile for our small town of Nerja several years ago, and have been making home visits in our area since 1993. They have always been committed to providing a quality of care and support enabling the elderly, physically and mentally challenged to experience an optimum quality of life, and almost two years ago with the help of several local authorities (the Town Hall, the Nerja Caves and other donations) they have managed to open the Good Samaritans Residence in Nerja.
The residence welcomes all clients from the age of sixty-five, and treats everyone with honour and respect, offering them the care and support they need. Care programs and services are provided in a wide range of environments, including: • Alzheimer/Dementia Care Programs • Assisted/Supportive Living 48 THE MARKET PLACE

The Good Samaritan Society strives to provide a quality of care and support that will enable the elderly and the physically and mentally challenged to experience the best quality of life possible. Security, independence and a sense of belonging are enjoyed by residents at Good Samaritan facilities.
The nuns and various staff also teach groups from The Escuela de Taller and hope that more of the young generation will train here in future. They have visits from local schools and are always welcome to volunteers adding to integration with local life and getting families involved.
When the Residence was completed, a dream was finally fulfilled and now the Good Samaritans have the perfect place to help make people's lives better, the facilities providing them with better care than they would receive at home. This facility allows residents much more attention, dignity and peace during their time of suffering. The building is nestled on the Rio Chillar at the top of Nerja. Consisting of several floors, (including the residence for the nuns) it hosts several modern facilities and a terrace with a wonderful view of the river and mountains. There is a

Overcooked meats raise risk of dementia Scientists have known for the better part of the past decade that cooking meats with high heat and grilling or barbequing dramatically increases the risk of developing colon cancer, as the heterocyclic amines that occur with overcooking disrupt normal cellular metabolism during digestion. It should then come as no surprise to health-conscious individuals that these same food preparation methods are now associated with a significant risk for diabetes and dementia, both diseases increasing exponentially with the proliferation of processed foods and poor food preparation standards over the course of decades of life. A team from the Icahn School of Medicine in New York expanded on well documented prior works showing that heat-processed meats contain high levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). These compounds have been associated with the worsening of many degenerative diseases, including diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Scientists know that AGEs are formed when proteins or fats react with sugar in a process that takes place naturally during the normal course of cellular metabolism, though it is greatly exacerbated during the cooking process when high heat methods are utilized. Using a mouse model, researchers in this study were able to show that a diet rich in AGEs affects the chemistry of the brain leading to a build-up of defective beta amyloid protein, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The team noted that mice eating a low-AGE diet were able to prevent the production of damaged amyloid.
Q: How can I stop grinding my teeth? Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is often related to stress and anxiety. Finding ways to reduce stress and to relax can help alleviate teeth grinding and create other long-lasting health benefits. Some techniques to help stop teeth grinding include biofeedback, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, exercise, and professional mental health counseling or psychotherapy. Cutting down on stimulants such as tobacco and caffeine may also help. If your teeth grinding is caused by dental problems, your dentist can help you with appropriate treatment, including veneers. Your dentist can also make a custom-fitted mouth guard for you to wear at night to prevent you from grinding or clenching your teeth while you're asleep.
Q: What foods can keep
my skin looking young and healthy ?
Prickly Pear: Discover the Power of an Ancient Superfood Living here in Southern Spain we all have access to a wild superfood known as prickly pear or chumba. It grows in abundance in the campo or countryside. The leaves and fruit of this desert plant can be harvested and consumed to treat a variety of conditions - including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Prickly pear cactus has been used since ancient times as a potent medicine, as well as a daily food source. the plant sterols found in prickly pear act as antioxidants in the system, reducing inflammation and deterring the formation of plaque on blood vessel walls. What's more, the flavonoids present in the cactus minimize free radical load, which lessens the strain on the liver and boosts overall immunity. Since the fruit and leaves of the plant are loaded with non-carbohydrate polysaccharides in the form of pectin, hemicellulose and mucilage, prickly pear soothes and coats the digestive tract, relieving constipation as well as ulcers. 52 THE MARKET PLACE
Forget the creams and potions. Keep your skin looking as young as possible with Italian foods. Lycopene is an antioxidant primarily found in tomatoes that can prevent sun damage. Research also shows that those who eat more olive oil are less likely to have wrinkles. Caprese salad, bruschetta‌ mix tomatoes and olive oil together whenever you can!

Ascertaining if Invisalign is right for you With Invisalign we can treat most malocclusions (misalignment), even the most complex cases in both adolescents and adults. Not all dental clinics can offer such treatment as the work should only be carried out by a certified Orthodontist, as in our case, so please make an appointment and we can confirm the possible treatment of Invisalign.
ithin modern orthodontics there are various options for "cosmetic dentistry". For patients who are concerned about their smile, we offer a fantastic system called Invisalign ®, a new system of invisible, removable orthodontics used to align teeth and improve the smile of our patients. It is based on a series of aligners, made to measure, that move the teeth gradually until you reach the desired smile. The main advantage of Invisalign treatment is the fact that the aligners are removable and can be replaced at any time. This way one can eat what and when you want, without restrictions from proper oral cleanliness (brush your teeth without apparatus), and even remove them for special occasions. Another advantage is that by not having wires or brackets no scratches are produced as it is comfortable and painless. In addition, the revisions are less than with conventional braces and appointments are fewer. Using a virtual 3D treatment plan (thanks to ClinCheck ® software) we will

But, she adds, it's also crucial to make tweaks to your daily routine to avoid whatever sparks your symptoms. Read on for easy, effective ways to keep sniffles at bay 24/7. Tree and grass pollen - the main causes of spring allergies - can blow into your house if you open your windows even a crack, "especially during the early morning hours, when tree pollen counts are typically the highest," says Dr. Vincent Tubiolo, an Sobre Retícula. allergy, asthma and immunology specialist in California. Stuffy inside? Run the air conditioning, but change your filters before each season to remove pollen, dust and mould. If you're really suffering, invest in an air purifier with a HEPA filter to help suck up lingering allergens. A.P.A.Ri.V. (Association for the Protection of Animals Rincon de la Victoria) DINGO Dingo was rescued after concerns were raised about his welfare. He had lived chained up for what we believe was 3 years. He had trouble walking when he first came to the refuge. He was also a little timid. You'd never know that today. He runs around and mixes well with the other dogs. He's a medium sized dog, with black and brown mixed hair, a sweet face and a gentle disposition. He's castrated and adoption-ready. Can you provide him a good home? For more information call Lola on 657-219-269 or go to our website www.aparivdogrescue.com
C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society) Spain’s first ski rescue dog Sierra Nevada is to become the first Spanish ski station with a rescue dog on its staff. Thor, a Belgian Shepherd, will be able to locate people buried by an avalanche and has been working in the mountains since December getting acclimitised to conditions of cold and snow. Thor’s owner, Ricardo Bonal, has been helped by firefighters from Huesca, who specialize in training dogs in the snow. They say a Belgian sheepdog has the energy, strength and ability to adapt to the conditions, making it capable of withstanding extreme and long hours of searching. The training began when Thor was six months old and takes two years, which means he will be ready for active service by the end of next season. Thor is the first dog at a Spanish ski station dedicated to these rescue efforts, an idea which came from French ski resorts. His presence will add to the security of Sierra Nevada, which is preparing to become more efficient in case of the danger of avalanches.
Barcelona’s new animal protection laws Barcelona plans to oblige dog owners to keep their pets on the leash when out on the city streets. New by-laws will also define how long pets can be left alone, and will make feeding pigeons or stray cats a offence punishable with a fine. The town hall said that the current law states that dog owners can allow their pets loose on the streets as long as they accompany the animal and demonstrate that it is obedient. “The majority of people who have dogs are civilized” said councilor Jordi Martí, “but there is a minority who are uncivilized.” He added that the changes are to “improve coexistence” and “protect animals.” Under the new legislation, dogs cannot be left unattended for more than 12 hours while owners will be prohibited from leaving cats by themselves for more than three days. Other stipulations include prohibiting Barcelona residents from raising animals in their homes with the intention of selling them, and feeding wild animals in public spaces. Only individuals recognized by the local authorities will be able to feed certain animals. Residents will no longer be able to keep pet monkeys or horses within the city limits, according to the new rules. 58 THE MARKET PLACE
Barcelona also wants owners who purchase or adopt a pet to sign a document stating that they have never mistreated an animal. Anyone who fails to tell the truth could be charged with a offence.
Bonnie and Bella Bonnie and Bella are two lovely Pointer female dogs who were adopted from the Costa Animal Society (CAS) by a retired couple about five years ago. They have become like sisters and look quite similar even though they were rescued from different areas of the Costa Del Sol. They had a wonderful life with the couple and enjoyed long walks in the campo but things changed last year when the husband suffered a debilitating stroke and must now walk with a Zimmer frame. However, the couple managed with the wife taking the dogs out for their daily walkies but another fateful blow was dealt last month when the wife died suddenly one afternoon. The husband has had to move back to England with his son and must now re-home these beautiful dogs. Bonnie and Bella are about seven years and have gentle, sweet dispositions. They Bella are both spayed and fully vaccinated and are in good health. Bonnie is a little more outgoing but each enjoys cuddles and get along well with other dogs, cats and children. CAS would love to find a home for Bonnie and Bella together but if good homes become available separately this may be the only option. If you could provide a forever home for one or both of these girls or could even foster them on an interim basis please contact Seacrest Kennels at 95 252 1426.
Can you help CAS? The Costa Animal Society is always in need of more helpers in a number of areas, so if you have spare time to fill, please make contact! In particular, more fundraisers are needed to work with our team, people are required to help with the feeding of the cats at the numerous feeding stations maintained by CAS, and animal lovers who could undertake a monthly airport run are necessary to take animals being re-homed in northern Europe to catch their flights. In addition, fosterers are always required to take short-term care of animals until a permanent home can be found for them. Even if you are only here for few months a year, CAS would appreciate your help. For a no-obligation chat, contact Wendy on 95 203 7095 or Vera on 95 252 9670 for general enquiries. Simone on 619 903 815 can answer queries about airport runs in English or German. And despite the tough times, money is still needed to cope with the continuous flow of abandoned dogs and cats requiring help from the Costa Animal Society. If you could donate a little to help the animals, CAS would be most grateful. TAIL (Torrox Animal International League) Alongside you have the happy photo of Nena who was rehomed from her foster carer. When a person decides to adopt, having thought carefully about the lifetime of care and love that their actions will bring, having met the requirements of the particular association, it is a joy for us when after a few weeks or sometimes months – or in Nena’s case, a few days – we receive an email, or letter, or posting on facebook, but always a picture showing how absolutely happy and settled is the adopted dog. A lot of volunteers who help Tail, put in hours to try and bring a little happiness and affection into the lives of the dogs in our Refuge. Some had never been homed before, maybe tied up to a tree all day every day, just maybe given stale bread a couple of times a week, and with luck a water bowl. You’ve seen them, haven’t you, when walking in the campo. Others were left to roam free, not realising the grass they were chewing had been sprayed with poison and they would soon die an agonising death, or they possibly hadn’t known that cars could be fatal. Tail always has a good number of dogs that have been nursed and trained a little but who would just adore a loving person to adopt them. They have love to give and share – have you? Please contact Tail on:- 629 501 173 / 672 837 132 www.tailtorrox.es follow us on Facebook. Forthcoming events include our Spring Dog Show, as always at Chiringuito El Barco, Peñoncillo Beach Torrox Costa on Saturday 26th April, commencing entries midday, and judging 14.00hrs. The date for our gentle car Treasure Hunt where you have to decode the clues to get to the next point is Saturday 17th May. More info next month.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. The town boasts an active Centro de Cultura, and a new attraction is The Fuente de Europa in Verano Azul Park, which is a very impressive monument, made from pieces of stone donated from EU member states. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms.

Torre del Mar
is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
