Cinema Complex

Academic project February 2006

In this design project we were called to create a cinema complex-cultural centre in a prominent site on a main street of Patrai across the port. The idea was to arrange the five different auditoriums freely in space and then in the process of connecting them create spaces in between, small lobbies, balconies, offering numerous views of the port, ramps and stairs and create a vivid walkthrough of the building. Most of the building’s facade is opaque revealing its multiple levels and the complexity of its form in this way presenting a memorable image that due to its central position can easily publish the programs it will host, whether movies or other cultural events. In addition to that the project has been though through to its construction details, using an interesting system for fixing the glass panels on the facade and supporting the different levels.

Live Over The City

Academic project June 2007

In this design project we were called to transform an abandoned pier at the former port of Patrai into a housing district. We extended the city’s grid to the sea and in the newly formed blocks we distributed programs best describing the existing city’s elit. On top of that in a strip we placed a mass housing building. In the ground level we can find commercial facilities such as banks, stores, offices, bars and cafes, leisure facilities like a public pool and a park, lots of parking space provided by underground parking buildings and two parks-entrances to the superimposed housing building. The building itself consists of a structural shell made of steel ‘‘ribbons’’ and of apartment boxes (five typologies) arranged evenly across the length of the strip. The concept of this design was to amplify the antithesis existing in Patrai between the city and the sea (the abrupt ending of the created grid) and to emphasize on the choice of handing over the former port for private instead of public use. Private use whether it’s a house, a store or an office, that is by location meant only for the few that can afford it. In other words we tried to create a counter utopia, a gated community where dwellers stand above the rest of the city, literally speaking.

Tensegrity Structure

Academic project June 2007 February 2008

In these two consecutive classes we studied retractable structures and focused in tensegrity systems. At first we analyzed their geometry and mechanisms and then designed and created a scale model of an bridge consisting of six idebtical cable-strut units. The main goal was to come up with a fast-assembled envelope that can host a variety of programs In the following semester we constructed a full scale model of the six-strut unit we had chosen, this time dealing with contruction details, accurate (or not so) measurements, materials selection and load bearing capabilities. For our design we used six 4m steel tubes, wire and custom joints to put the design together.

Fake port Index

Academic project February 2008

In these series of videos we tried to intervene in the areas of the Patrai’s port with a playful approach. After identifying areas of interest we proceeded in producing an alternative reality where cargo trucks would transform into cinema screens on the press of a button, where earth - floor would react to your movement, alter your path, where single units can populate and grow into space in front of your eyes.

In response to the fires that took place in Greece in the summer of 2007, the architecture schools of Harvard and Patras University took the initiative of researching the part architecture can play in confronting the physical and urban landscape in time of great need. During this desighn course we were called to confront the problems of the village of Rodina, problems created ether by the extensive damage suffered during the devastating fires, or by depopulation. In answering to these emerging problems it’s not enough to rebuild the destroyed housing units. Bringing back the village to a prior state, even if it is a traditional, picturesque one, won’t help confronting the problem of depopulation. We must therefore adopt a plan, a growing model that will allow people to stay, live and work at Rodina without having to transform their village into a tourist’s destination. We could create a program that takes responsibility in: Converting any unused house into a unit able to accommodate someone that is used to living in the city and working from home. Providing high speed internet connection to every building of the village. And in collaboration with large companies and private individuals bring people to live and work in the village. Thus based on modern technology and taking advantage of the internet’s communicational capabilities we can create within the existing society a new one, consisting of rather young people. By doing that social and economical activities in the village will be revived. Vacant spaces will be filled and eventually need for expanding will arise. How do we build new houses in a context such as this? Do we ignore everything? Do we have to imitate the existing traditional style, and in doing so create a beautiful but nonetheless completely fake image? Tradition is worth preserving and protecting but just copying won’t do it. We have to use tradition as inspiration not as boundaries in whatever creation process we choose to follow. Starting of by studying the typology of traditional houses in the wider area of Rodina I decided to use part of a traditional ground plan and add to the volume whatever missing in order to end up with o modern house. The house is designed to host a family of five, three adults and two children. In the volumes constructed of exposed dark concrete are found, the parking space, the vertical movement, the kitchen, the bathrooms and the library. While in places where stone is dominant more traditional programs take place such as sleeping rooms, living room-dining room and fireplace. In the wooden volume that seems to be suspended in the back view of the house is hosted the program of ‘working from home’. The entrance is situated in the north side of the concrete volume next to the parking space and then follows the kitchen that hides the stairs to the second floor. In the same volume the elevator is found opposite to the stairs and next to It the exit to the private, hidden garden. In that level the living room with the fire place and a room that is intended for the grandparents are separated by a concrete volume that hosts one bathroom. In the second level next to the elevator is the ‘working from home’ room and at the end of the stairs a library space, In the ‘traditional’ part are two bedrooms with a bathroom separating them.

Artificial Nature

Academic project June 2008

This project is the result of a course on architectural geometry and computer aided design, during which i became familiar with Softwares ParaCloud and Rhino. In my design i tried to create a new urban furniture, a “musical instrument” that filters nature’s elements, wind, light and water producing a unique spacial experience. I created a ruled surface and on its grid populated the tubular component. Moreover based on the movement of the sun and its impact on the surface i differentiated the geometry of the component for each different grid square in order to achieve maximum shadow during midday in the summer months. The tube-shaped components used to create the surface produce sound in the presence of wind offer numerous variations of shaded space and provide a unique, extraordinary image immediately converting the object into a strong landmark, whichever the context.

In these series of experiments i tried to explore form generating techniques using both physical and computer models. Starting of with surfaces and its space producing possibilities, exploring notions of overlaying and depth, opaque and solid, segmentation and unity, in and out. In some cases treating them as envelops, containers of space, programs and activities and in others seeing them as space themselves, as surfaces that have depth, that produce habitable boxes, in the end resembling insane skyscrapers or city grids mixed and twisted.

Patras

from production to consumption

Research thesis September 2009

In this research thesis we tried to comprehend the development of the city of Patras through the process of production and consumption. We begin by defining the process of producing itself and then we describe the way industrial production, in particular, affects the development of cities. Moreover cities that were mainly centred on production and the welfare of their citizens are briefly mentioned and a more detailed description is given on the project of linear industrial cities that were proposed in the Soviet Union. Respectively we define the process of consumption and through the example of modern cities we observe the relation between consumption and the development of cities in our days. Afterwards we examine the city of Patras and refer to some historical facts of her industrial era. In particular we report the industries that were situated in the coastal area of the city and we describe the use they took over the years. To conclude, using the information we collected by the research and in the light the productive and consuming process we try to interpret the current situation and further development of the city of Patras.

Diploma thesis February 2010

In our diploma project we focused on resolving the problematic relation between the city of Patrai and the University of Patrai. During the thirty years that the University of Patrai exists there has been little interaction with the city, mostly due to the distance of fifteen kilometers that stand between them. The major problem we identified was that, while Patrai is where the majority of the university’s students live, it offers no or limited connections to the university itself, connections such as transportation, university spaces in the city or activities, lectures and exhibitions. Our goal was to create this kind of connections and moreover reinvent the role of the university in the context of a contemporary city. In fact we believe that such a city should have spaces-buildings dedicated to this connection, spaces hosting student-university exhibitions, lectures and open conferences, concerts, movies and plays, produced by students, reading spaces and small libraries, etc.

In order to inject the new programs in the city we selected mostly unused or abandoned building in the city centre. We needed to create a network of university spaces that would be integrated with the city’s existing networks (transport, public, commercial) and in the same time be easily recognized as something different. A network that its density would allow pedestrians to both grasp (visually) its existence and easily navigate from node to node and in the same time feel welcome to wander and explore its units, in other words, create a unity but not a ghetto. Furthermore the design of the network’s units should be uniform and contemporary in the same time bearing university’s principals of innovation and knowledge. Having that in mind we created three zones of programs in the city centre according to their use, student or public. In the red zone we place the reading rooms of the University of Patrai with small magazine libraries. In the green zone we place the cultural institutes of the university, and in the yellow zone we install exhibition galleries for university use and a conference centre.

In this case we selected e seven-story building of the 70’s, to set an example for the exhibition galleries situated in the yellow zone. Situated on Agiou Nikolaou street, perhaps the most renowned and commercial street in Patrai, the assembly hosts mainly offices and on the ground floor some stores. We use one side of the building from the ground to the third flour, in fact we use one store and two apartments on the floors, and we install the new programs, a reception, three floors of exhibition space and vertical movement connecting the parts. Every part of the intervention is shelled in a surface adjusted to the existing spaces and thus creating the new ones. On the outside the surface becomes a distinctive label for the building while on the inside it dissolves into the walls.

This building that has once been the hotel ‘Metropolis’ was selected for its location on Trion Summaxon square, focus point for patras visitors as it is within walking distance from the train and bus stations and the entrance to the city’s port. Furthermore the building is a remarkable example of neoclassical architecture built in the 20’s, its facade has been recently restored but the interior remain in bad condition. So it is in this site that we decided to install programs that would promote and advertise university activities to the city. We therefore create an information centre on the base level of the building that is open to the public and designed as an extention of the square, a sheltered public space tha would from time to time host open air exhibitions. In addition to that the uper levels are dedicated to an auditorium-conference centre where lectures and other univercity events could be organised.

In this design solution we kept the facade intact threw away the interior and rebuilt it from scratch using a surface constructed by triangles as ceiling, wall or window. This triangular pattern is passed on the floor of the ground level and continues to the public square creating an interesting tiling and some urban furniture. A set of polygons, resembling a broken plane is projected on the front of the building facing the public square, in that way making more evident and distinctive the new public programs hosted inside .

Situated on the corner of Agiou Nikolaou and Korinthou street this set of buildings is the example we set for sites accommodating the university’s cultural activities (green zone). In fact the building on the corner, the former hall of Prapopoulos industrial family, and two more across Korinthou street will host activities of the university connected to music. All three buildings are fine specimens of architecture, the ‘‘Prapopoulos Hall’’ bears baroque and art nouveau details while the two others offer an insight on neoclassical architecture. Today in all three buildings the ground floor is used by stores, some of witch are closed, and the first floor remains empty and in bad condition while roofs need extended repair due to the long abandoned upper levels.

Our intervention, like the site itself is separated (by the street) in two sections, the first and public one hosts a music hall and a lobby with a bar in the ‘‘Prapopoulos’s” building first floor and at its base level a small public park, and the entrance (stairs and elevator), and the second and more student oriented, located on the first floor of the two building across the street that hosts practice rooms for music, e recording studio, a lobby, the radio station of the university and an office. Although separated these two section have a meeting point, a bridge connecting them making communication between them possible, offering a powerful view of the city and in the same time advertising the new activities to its residents. Our basic intention was to use the city’s abandoned or unused building and spaces to inject with our programs and in this particular example we use empty stores on the ground flour to create public space, vertical movement and foundation in order to exploit the unused first floors.

The new programs introduced to the buildings are placed into ‘‘bubbles’’ that are completely independent from the rest of the building, ‘‘bubbles’’ that consist of a triangulated surface twisting and turning to create walls and roof and of structural elements supporting the skinsurface and the new floor. The same surface is used to create the link between the public and student section of the design, the bridge, and in the process of doing so the dimensions of the triangles and the ‘‘roughness’’ of the surface change following the rule : Public= small, rough and intense while Private= large, plane and calm.

In the case of the university’s reading facilities we decided to go with a large number of small buildings centered around Hfaistou pedestrian street that would be open all day and all night, organized and administrated by students. Their location near the pedestrian offers a balance of quiet days and vivid nights, an equilibrium of serenity and security. Each building is referred to a different school and offers a casual place to read, work, meet and exchange thoughts. Due to their use these facilities do not need promotion or publicity so we decide to intervene simply by restoring the outer shell and adding a small mark-sign and in the interior we retain the structural integrity of the building rearranging space when needed. The building we selected as an example is an abandoned storehouse on the corner of Pantanassis street and Hfaistou pedestrian street. We restore the building’s facade and roof and remove the interior walls thus creating a single space where a library, a small living room, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a computer corner are installed
