If you’re planning to spend more than a few months a year in Mexico, having a local bank account can make your life A LOT easier. Before leaving home, make one wire transfer to your new bank, and have cash on hand for whatever opportunities may come up. Some of the banks, like HSBC and Scotiabank, will probably be familiar to you, however, don’t let the “foreignness” of it stop you! At the larger branches, all the banks will have at least one English speaking account rep whom you will quickly get to know on a ﬁrst name basis!
PAY PEOPLE EASILY Every bank offers peso to peso account transfers, and if a fee is applied, it’s often less than a dollar. This is a very common way of doing business and provides a very clear paper trail.
PAY BILLS QUICKLY Pay your utility bills directly & quickly through your bank’s website. For those that don’t want to be bothered remembering when each bill is due, ask if your bank offers automatic withdrawals.
MORE SECURE Each time we use our credit or debit cards, we are opening ourselves up to card fraud. With a local account, in one visit to the bank you can withdraw enough cash to last a month.
DOCUMENTS TO BRING WHEN OPENING ACCOUNT While requirements can vary from, bank to bank, the following is a list of the most common documents that are required to open an account. • Current Passport • Current Immigration Visa • Recent Utility Bill in your name. If you are renting, and the bill is in the owner’s name, bring along the original rental contract AND a copy of the owner’s ID. Accepted utility bills are Water, CFE or Telmex. • Approximately $4000 pesos in cash to open the account. Some banks require less, but you don’t want to go through the whole process just to ﬁnd out you didn’t bring enough cash!
INSIDER TIPS • Mexico is very strict about the format of your name. You will save lots of time if the way your name is written on your utility bill or rental contract matches your passport exactly. The way you sign forms at the bank should also match your signature natu on your passport. • If both you and your spouse will have access to the account, pay attention to whomever is labeled as the “Titular” or account owner. Only this person will be able to make changes to the account. • Pick your branch smartly. Even though a bank might offer 5 branches in town, the branch where you physically open the account is where you’ll need to go back to for any account requests or future documents that may be required. If they all seem the same to you, pick the one with the best parking options and seats to sit in while you wait! • There are tighter restrictions on dollar accounts as it is a foreign currency in Mexico! If you plan to transfer dollars to someone regularly, ﬁnd out which bank they use. Online dollar transfers are typically limited to accounts within the same bank. • Think about how you want to use the account. Banks can vary subtly in the services they offer. Some of the banks with the largest international presence offer the fewest convenience services. Ask the bank rep if the service is offered and to walk you through the process step by step. th
