DESIGN & DECOR

by Stefanie Hauer Design

Home Decor trends are always changing with each season, but one trend that has become a timeless staple is Rustic Design. Rustic Design is a great style that incorporates a lot of warm wood textures, neutral color tones, metal accents and reclaimed items. Imagine sitting around a dining room table that was milled from 100 year old lumber, it comes with history and a story. It’s no longer just a piece of furniture, it’s a statement piece that inspires conversation. There are a lot of different ways to incorporate rustic details whether you have a modern or traditional design style. Let’s start with Texture, which may be the most important characteristic of Rustic Design. Texture is shown in the form of exposed beams, exposed brick, reclaimed lumber, metal framing and accents. If you favor simplistic style with modern elements, incorporating white exposed brick as a backsplash or as an accent wall can add a lot of rustic charm, while keeping things simple and neutral. A reclaimed wood coffee table surrounded by a white sofa and chairs can balance modern

4

and rustic. If you favor a traditional style of decor, adding reclaimed wood beams or a reclaimed wood accent wall can have a major impact on the design of your home. Also repurposed furniture and handcrafted art give a rustic feel. A traditional rustic style is choosing a natural finish like knotty alder cabinets or live edge countertops. Finding local artisans that build unique pieces of furniture from reclaimed materials is a wonderful way to support local businesses, along with keeping Baja characteristics and history incorporated into furniture and decor. Once you have staple pieces of furniture and have added texture to your walls, it’s time to cover another important aspect. The details. It’s all in the details. The accents that are picked play a big role when trying to create a rustic vibe. Interesting rugs, unique light fixtures and expressive art, nailhead trims, linen and leather fabrics are all elements that can reflect a natural and rustic design plan. With any good design, lighting plays a vital role in

making a space evoke a certain feeling. Rustic appeals to the desire of getting comfortable while surrounded with natural elements. Incorporating calming, dimmable lighting is a smart choice. Also having large windows is a wonderful way to add lots of natural light. Now for the fun part: adding pattern! Pattern can be provided with throw pillows, curtains or even certain wall coverings. Whether you stick to monochromatic colors or you love bold, bright colors- pattern is a fun way to mix it up. Another stunning way of creating bold pattern is to create patterns in a big way. I’m talking about laying your hardwood floor or wood tile (since beach days are often in Baja) in a herringbone pattern or installing a shiplap wall in a chevron pattern. You can even choose to install a pattern in one room like a dining room and stay with a traditional pattern in the hallways and kitchen. MIX IT UP! You won’t be disappointed with the results and everyone will love your creative style when they walk into your home. Rustic style is easily done with either bold statements or small undertones- it also is a timeless style that will always be popular. Incorporating natural elements, especially handcrafted works of art, make for a comfortable, stylish home. i

Quivira Los Cabos by Justine Schock, REmexico Real Estate Agent, Justine@CaboRealEstate.com

magine waking up to the sound of crashing waves and looking out your window to sweeping ocean and golf course views. This dream can be a reality at Quivira Los Cabos! Quivira is an 1,850-acre master-planned community on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja peninsula, about 10 minutes north of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Quivira is known for its Jack Nicklaus designed golf course and three-mile stretch of untouched beaches. One of the great things about Quivira is that they have four distinct neighborhoods at different price points, which makes living the Cabo dream achievable for everyone. They even offer attractive financing programs and pricing incentives, which can be hard to find in Mexico. Quivira is currently selling homes in Mavila, Copala, Coronado and Montecristo. Mavila is the newest addition to the Quivira family, and the most budget friendly with preconstruction homes starting at $190,000usd. The new “pueblito” style home concept will offer owners condos that look more like townhomes than traditional condominiums. “The central “village” is comprised of two- and three-story buildings which have single level one-, two-, or three-bedroom condos. The more privileged top floor condos have an included roof-top terrace. The buildings are distributed around three community pools and are connected via winding footpaths that lace through fountain-studded courtyards. Along the fairway are threebedroom two-story single-family homes, and the next phase will introduce a handful of towers with two- and three-bedroom condos,” explains Ryan Winegar, Sales Manager at Quivira. Next up is Copala; a mix of two- and three-bedroom condominiums and four- and fivebedroom single-family residences. Owners interested in the residence portion of Copala can choose between seven different floor plans, ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 square feet. “The entire community sits up high in the center of Quivira looking down over the Pacific Ocean” describes Winegar. Owners have access to the 38,000-square foot Copala Clubhouse, which includes a stunning pool, massage rooms, movie theater, deli, gym, meeting rooms and more. The views from Copala are absolutely breathtaking! Coronado is my probably my favorite of Quivira’s offerings, an exclusive community designed for 64 single level villas. Each three-, four- or five-bedroom villa features expansive terraces with unobstructed ocean views. Owners can choose from a wide variety of finishes to customize their home and truly make it their own. I love the old-world hacienda style of Coronado, and the contrast between wood beamed ceilings, high end appliances, granite, marble and stone. Each home comes with its own custom designed family crest at the entryway. Its special touches like these that make Coronado a one of a kind place to live! Last, but certainly not least, are The Private Residences at Montecristo, featuring 18 luxury Tuscan-style homes. Winegar explains, “Montecristo is a small private section of hillside homes with its own entrance and security but with access to hotel amenities. The threebedroom two-level homes are fully furnished, turn-key and enjoy both service from and access to the amenities of the Montecristo Clubhouse and the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort & Hotel.” Homes in Montecristo include an infinity pool, jacuzzi, large terraces, and spacious design. Both Coronado and Montecristo start in the upper million-dollar range. All owners at Quivira have access to the Quivira Golf Club and many other first-class amenities including restaurants, gyms, award winning spas, and optional golf club and private yacht club memberships. And the new toll road from the San Jose International Airport makes getting there easier than before. No matter what neighborhood you choose, you can’t go wrong with a home in Quivira Los Cabos!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

By Justine Schock, REmexico Real Estate Agent, Justine@CaboRealEstate.com

On a winding dirt road just north of San Jose del Cabo, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, you will find two exceptional eco-friendly communities; Acre Baja and Flora Farms. Although close in proximity, these two projects are extremely different, and each have their own unique atmosphere and amenities.

Open in late November, the tree houses at Acre are one of the most unique vacation experiences you will find in Mexico. I had the opportunity to stay in one of their 12 brand new tree houses and dine at their on-site restaurant and it was fantastic! Each tree house features a king size bed, bathroom, closet, outdoor shower and sitting area on the deck. Almost

10

everything inside the tree house is made locally including the furniture and light fixtures while bedding and textiles come from Oaxaca. Even the walls are constructed with palo de arco sticks from right here in the Baja. Although compact, they feel very open, airy and private. Interior curtains can be closed for extra privacy, but I guarantee you will feel like you are staying in your very own palm tree jungle. They also have one deluxe suite that includes two tree houses connected via a suspension bridge, ideal for a small family or group. Rates for the tree houses range from $275/night in the low season, to $350/night in the high season, plus tax. Daily room rate includes maid service, breakfast, morning yoga class and other classes coming soon. Each tree house is equipped with a touchscreen tablet concierge, making room service requests quick and easy, and will be equipped with high-speed wireless internet (also available at restaurant and pool). The restaurant at Acre is open to the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and features an International menu using sustainable products from local farmers and Acre s onsite garden. We sampled a variety of menu items during our stay, each expertly prepared with special care taken for my food allergies. In addition to fantastic service, and food and drink options, Acre guests can enjoy the pool surrounded by funky hexagonal tiles, a bocce ball court, ping pong table, fire pit with a giant Jenga game, and visiting with the many resident farm animals including roosters, peacocks, goats and dogs. Guests eager to get away for a day at the beach can enjoy Acre s partnership with nearby El Ganzo beach club. Acre is the creation of business partners Stuart McPherson and Cameron Watt who came to Cabo six years ago and began developing their extraordinary vision which currently includes a restaurant, pool, event space, and the newly opened tree houses. Although kids are welcome, the property caters more to adults with a cool sexy vibe. A store that will offer grab and go snacks and other convenient travel items is currently under construction at the entrance to the property, as well as ample guest parking. Future Acre phases will include 30 or so twolevel bungalows (both full and fractional ownership) and 30-35 villas. For reservations, call (624) 171-8226 www.AcreBaja.com @AcreBaja

THE CULINARY COTTAGES AND HILLSIDE HAYLOFTS AT FLORA FARMS

Just a minute up the road you will find Flora Farms, a growing organic farm community offering full and fractional ownership residences, a wonderful farm to table restaurant, and other exciting amenities coming soon! Launched in December 2012, the Culinary Cottages were the first real estate opportunity offered at Flora Farms. The ten handcrafted luxury cottages feature 2 or 3 full bedrooms, plus a den with a queen sofa bed, private entry, 24-hour security, outdoor area with covered patios and hand tended private gardens where guests have full harvest rights. While the Culinary Cottages are now established residences, the Hillside Haylofts at Flora Farms are still under construction. The Haylofts are being constructed between what will soon be bountiful tiered gardens, and will offer 2.5 or 3.5 bedrooms (a den with sofa bed is considered a half bedroom). They are a professional chef s dream with fully stocked and equipped kitchens. Each residence is completely furnished with all doors, furniture and finishes skillfully handcrafted at the farms onsite workshop. Owners at Flora Farms appreciate deeded real estate ownership and amenities including a European swimming hole with plans for fish, turtles and a rope swing, yoga classes, and a spa (currently offering limited availability to the public). All owners benefit from full harvesting privileges. The farm employs 200+ local employees with 3 generations of farmers. All the food is fresh farm to table, sourced from their onsite gardens, 15-acre mango orchard and 100-acre ranch with livestock, pigs, and chickens. They even have their own butcher. The Flora Farms property already has several stores including a cafĂŠ and wine shop, handmade soap and lotion store, and clothing boutique, but developers have plans for a total of nine to eleven live/work shops, an organic brewery with neighborhood beer garden, and a new seafood restaurant in the future.
