Health, Safety, Cleaning & Hygiene

Safety solution from Direct Hoist

Direct Hoist has put the brakes on mast-climber mechanical failures, thanks to its new role as UK distributor of Electroelsa construction hoists and platforms.

Recent HSE health and safety guidance has highlighted many mast-climbing work platforms (MCWPs), which rely on two motor drive units per mast, are not fitted with sufficient controls to prevent them from falling with overspeed. The findings, which follow tragic deaths due to collapse of mast-climbers, have grounded any MCWPs that lack a mechanical brake on each motor.

Direct Hoist’s Electroelsa MCWPs already conform to HSE standards,

featuring a parachute safety device that intervenes by locking the platform if it descends at an excessive speed, along with an automatic safety system to protect the machine from overload.

Direct Hoist boss, Rob Wilson,

Jangro supports Trussell Trust

says, “Direct Hoist is delighted to bring newer, safer equipment to the British market to care for our valuable workforce. With Electroelsa’s failsafe overspeed protection system, we can continue supplying hoists and mast-climbers to parts of the construction industry that can’t currently get off the ground.

“Electroelsa is implementing a wide range of technological innovations, which we’re excited to introduce.

Direct Hoist is a forward-thinking company, and we proudly stand by our exceptional reputation for safety.”

Jangro’s ntrl range receives

Vegan accreditation

Jangro, the largest network of independent janitorial and cleaning distributors in the UK and Ireland, is delighted to announce that ntrl, its innovative range of natural cleaning products, is registered with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark. An internationally recognised standard, The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark certifies that all products registered are free of all animal use, in ingredients and testing. The ntrl portfolio comprises thirteen products ideal for cleaning surfaces in a variety of environments. All use raw materials that are derived from plant-based extracts. Their natural formulas are 100% biodegradable, contain zero petrochemicals, and can reduce the product’s carbon footprint by up to 85%. Products come super-concentrated too, giving more uses out of a single container.

The ntrl Washroom Cleaner and the ntrl Multi-Surface Cleaner also harness revolutionary, probiotic cleaning. Rather than killing germs with chemicals, probiotics use beneficial bacteria to colonise surfaces, in effect taking over the area, including deep into hard-to-reach cracks and crevices. This means they can help to reduce the presence of harmful bacteria on surfaces

and carry on working after they have been cleaned. The full range includes: Washroom Cleaner, Toilet Cleaner, Foaming Washroom & Toilet Cleaner, Foam Hand Soap, Alcohol-Free Foam Hand Sanitiser, Multi-Surface Cleaner, Washing Up Liquid, Cleaner & Degreaser, Surface Sanitisers (available with and without fragrance), Organic Descaler, Kitchen Sanitiser, and an All-Surface Cleaner.

Jangro, the largest network of independent janitorial and cleaning distributors in the UK and Ireland, is proud to announce that it is supporting The Trussell Trust as its chosen charity this year. All 47 members in its network have started collecting foods and other essentials and have been dropping them off to their local food banks across the country.

As well as organising food collections, Jangro will also be donating any monies raised from fundraising events throughout the year, such as its regular supplier and member days. So far, the Jangro membership has already raised over £3,000.

The Trussell Trust is a worthy charity that supports a nationwide network of food banks. Together they provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty. Jangro shares its vision for a UK without the need for food banks; for a just, compassionate future, where no one should have to use one to get by.

Jo Gilliard, CEO at Jangro, comments, “At Jangro, we take our social responsibility seriously and believe in giving back to the communities in which we operate.

At a time when the true cost of living is soaring, we hope our contributions will help families get by that

little bit easier.”

Last year, Jangro achieved its fundraising goal, raising a huge £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support to help them support people living with cancer.

Construction dust

Regular inhalation, of even small quantities of construction dust, can damage the lungs and respiratory airways over the course of time.

Some diseases can develop quite quickly, but in many cases, it can take 10 to 30 years before symptoms become apparent.

What is construction dust?

Construction dust is a broad term, there are many different types of dust one may be exposed to in a construction environment.

Silica dust arises during work with materials containing silica, such as concrete, mortar and sandstone.

Wood dust arises during work with softwood, hardwood and

wood-based materials such as MDF and plywood.

Other types of dust arise during work with plaster, glass wool, mineral wool, marble, etc.

Health risks

Lung damage such as silicosis, lung cancer, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and includes diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Respiratory protection

When all other measures have been taken to reduce dangerous exposure levels, respiratory protection equipment is the last means of preventing hazardous air contamination entering the body, via the airways.

Facial hair, such as beards, moustaches, and sideburns, reduce effective seals on tightfitting respirators, and create a need for Powered Air Respiratory Protection to ensure adequate levels of contaminant reduction.

For expert support on your respiratory needs, contact Sundstrom Safety UK at: ukhelpdesk@srsafety.com or contact: 0330 808 8935.

Going waterless to cut costs

Facilities managers and businesses could annually save over £1,200 for every three urinals converted to waterless technology, at the same time as slashing CO2. The findings have been released by Smarti Environmental, the UK’s leading waterless urinal business, to coincide with Water Saving Week 2022.

The savings are possible with the installation of Smarti Environmental’s newly launched ecofriendly Vortex triple seal valve (TSV), which eliminates bad urinal smells, pipe blockages and eradicates the spread of infections caused by flushing urinals.

The eco, retro-fit Vortex valve saves 100,000 litres of clean water and 105kg CO2 per urinal, per year. It also prevents airborne infections caused by spray during flushing, which has been

Pumps & Valves

shown to spread 500,000 germs per inch, per flush, including COVID-19, influenza and norovirus.

The Vortex TSV fits 98% of all urinals, enabling businesses to retain their existing urinal bowls.

The fastest flowing waterless urinal solution on the market, the fully recyclable, Britishmanufactured, hygienic one-way multi valve system, uses an eco-friendly bio-block enzyme ring and integrated bio-tablet tablet to break down uric acid and bio film proteins, making urine PH neutral – a world first! This prevents costly and damaging back-fill flooding and blocked pipes.

Small tool with big attraction

Fridgenius is a family run business and has a network of national and international distributors, which supply the Solenoid Valve Operating Magnets that are suitable for use in refrigeration, air-conditioning, water, oil and gas installations.

The Solenoid Valve Operating Magnet was designed to solve the problem of operating solenoid valves when a system is without power. Its small and easy to use application is shaped similar to a cotton reel and when placed onto a solenoid valve (with coil removed), causes the armature to open and close.

When can it be used?

The Solenoid Valve Operating Magnet can be used to operate valves in a plant or system, which has yet to be wired-up or has been decommissioned. Alternatively, it can be used when recovering refrigerant from a plant, which has already been decommissioned and power removed. In emergencies, such as the failure of a solenoid valve coil, it can be used to keep a system operating while a replacement coil is found.

Described as a ‘superb product’ by fellow engineers in the industry, Fridgenius has many success stories and

testimonials singing praise of its product. The Solenoid Valve Operating Magnet is available in three sizes, 10mm, 15mm and 18mm and can be customised to a colour of your choice and with company logo printing available.

It uses a circular economy model to provide its customers with a more sustainable solution.

collecting used items and delivering laundered garments on a schedule to meet the needs of the customer. In its circular economy approach, customers’ items are maintained, repaired, reused and redeployed in order

to optimise their lifespan. Elis’ expertise and processes in its highly efficient industrial laundries help to minimise water, energy and cleaning product consumption to reduce the impact on the environment.

Durable pressure reducing valve

A pressure reducing valve from steam specialist TLV Euro Engineering has been installed at King’s College Hospital in London and operating on a daily basis for nearly 14 years without an overhaul or spares fitted.

The COSPECT pressure reducing valve was originally specified by TLV Euro Engineering and installed by a contractor in 2008 for the King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Ruskin Wing, the tallest building in the Denmark Hill campus and one housing many of the hospital’s neurological departments.

Originally installed outside between two buildings at the site, the COSPECT valve has since been enclosed by further building works at the hospital campus. Installed to reduce pressure in the main steam line from 8 bar to 2 bar, indirect steam is used for the hospital’s heating batteries and domestic hot water purposes, so the COSPECT valve is operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It is estimated that the valve has achieved an average throughput of 950kg/h over its 14 year life, equivalent to 117,000 tonnes of steam. And in that

time, the pressure reducing valve has never had any spares fitted, never been overhauled and has only occasionally had the operating pressures adjusted by the end user.

Fire behaviour in modular construction

Modular construction, a process that allows several parts of a building to be constructed off-site and then delivered and assembled on site, is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry.

Fire safety professionals are therefore driven by this increasing popularity into tackling the fire safety issues linked with modular construction. One of the main issues that concerns us, at Efectis, is the overall behaviour of the building modular structure in the event of a fire including the impact of the modules displacement on the connections between modules.

including WiFi ceramic core electric radiators, appenabled designer electric radiators, sophisticated panel heaters, highly efficient German electric radiators, smart infrared heaters and more.

The high temperature behaviour of modular construction is rather complex. Fire testing alone is often not enough in evaluating the fire resistance of the overall system due to size and loading limitations in fire laboratories and 3D modelling studies are often necessary for the fire safety assessment. In the recent years, fire safety engineers at Efectis have been working on the research and development of such kind of modelling.

The main challenge is the performance of connections, which are used for fixing the modules to each other and transferring the horizontal loads back to the stabilising elements of the building. Differential

heating, expansion of structural elements and second order effects (deformations causing initial loads to induce further stresses into the structure) are some of the main phenomena, which can lead to failure of connections and consequently compromise the fire resistance of the building.

Shading the future based on experiences from the past

When it comes to Solar shading and glare control, unfortunately, sunblinds are often an ‘afterthought’.

The building will have been designed and built with so called solar efficient glass only to find out that shading systems are still required as the glass itself often does not do what it says on the tin. By that time, most blinds will look like a ‘bolt-on-job’ and stick out like a sore thumb, destroying the clear lines the architect had intended.

Most, but not all!

At Reflex-Rol UK, a division of De Leeuw Ltd, with experience going back to 1983, we pride ourselves in designing retrofit shading systems that blend in superbly with a building’s windows. Our blind materials/fabrics are thin, meaning we can accommodate a 3 or 4 metre drop in a cassette/ headbox of a mere 55 x 54mm. These cassettes can be powder coated or anodised to any colour specified so we can match window frames/wall finishes and make it appear as a fully integrated system with the building. The same size cassette/ headbox can be used for either manually operated systems or electrically driven blinds.

Further and more detailed information can be found on our website at: www.reflex-rol.co.uk and the group’s website at: www.deleeuw-ltd.co.uk

Claire Curran, Linaker Managing Director, says, “We couldn’t be more proud to work with such a culturally aligned client as Bright Horizons. The team have worked extremely hard to ensure our unparalleled value for money service shines through, while showcasing our truly national reach, anchored by our local offices.”

Linaker is proud to support the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children with a free labour hour given to every Bright Space across the UK. The Foundation has more than 80 Bright Spaces, which provide warm, safe, enriching play environments for vulnerable children.

New book explains that accurate workplace data is key to managing hybrid working

Good decisions about how to apply hybrid working based on accurate data will be what sets apart successful organisations from also rans, says a new book. Managing the New Office Environment is written by Tony Booty, a joint founder of Abintra, which pioneered the use of desk sensor tech to monitor office utilisation a decade ago. Based on a wealth of experience in more than 100 corporations worldwide, he sets out the pros and cons of different technologies and manual methods for monitoring the workplace. As well as

optimising space use, the book focuses on environmental monitoring with an emphasis on wellbeing. The author answers challenging questions for organisations navigating the new hybrid workplace including the steps needed to manage change successfully and how to win over employees to the idea of agile working. When it comes to who should be involved, he argues that workplace transformation should be a top-down process. Given the importance of the change to working practices and employee wellbeing, the

CEO should drive the process, involving HR and IT as well as the financial and real estate teams to whom office layout and management decisions normally fall.

The 100 page book includes a ten-point checklist for deploying occupancy monitoring and a buyer’s guide to occupancy sensors as well as best practice examples and case studies.

Rising fuel crisis could spark flame for electric utility vehicle demand

Soaring fuel prices which have rippled through the UK in recent months has resulted in a significant blow to businesses and organisations throughout the nation. With prices reaching record breaking levels, the need to source alternative, cheaper options has been a high priority for those with a requirement for utility vehicles to support their operations according to Bradshaw Electric Vehicles – who say they have been inundated with enquiries from businesses & organisations searching for alternatives to traditionally powered vehicles that won’t burn a significant hole in their pockets.

As of the end of May, petrol was 173.2p per litre, with diesel priced at 183.1p per litre – a steep rise when in the past six months alone prices for both have soared by 19% and 21% respectively, with concerns that this trend is not set to slow down over the coming months.

This is a staggering hike when compared to the price of charging an electric vehicle – making the cost of charging one of Bradshaw’s Goupil electric vehicles, which cater for last mile distribution, waste management and local authority requirements, significantly cheaper over the long term than running a traditionally powered utility vehicle.

With the average cost of filling up a standard

vehicle last week exceeding £100 for the first time ever, the upward inflationary pressure placed on fleet operators is becoming unsustainable.

According to Ramsy Labassi, Marketing Manager at Bradshaw, the business, which has been the UK’s leading supplier of industrial electric vehicles since 1976, believes that rising oil prices will only service to accelerate the shift to electric utility vehicles as the running costs of traditionally powered vehicles is quickly becoming

wholly unsustainable – something that has been regularly reiterated in recent enquiries, especially by SMEs.

Ramsy said, “Demand for electric vehicles has been steadily climbing, even before petrol and diesel prices begun to skyrocket. The race to net-zero, more LEZs being introduced in towns and cities as well as the petrol and diesel sale ban already got the ball rolling with regards to electric vehicle uptake.

“With the added expenditure of rising

fuel costs, which may not subside for some time, the move to electric not only provides potential users with the prospect of improving their environmental footprint, but in turn lowering their vehicle operating costs as well.

“The most commonly cited factors behind holding back on electric include perceived lack of range, the lack of readily available charging points and cost, however with fuel costs rising considerably, the perks of making the transition from traditionally powered utility vehicles to electric far outweigh the purported downsides.

“Despite the current rise in electricity costs, recharging an electric utility vehicle still remains more cost-effective than fuelling its petrol or diesel counterpart, offering significant savings for utility vehicle operators over the long term.

“The cheaper price of running electric vehicles may therefore encourage more businesses and organisations to make the switch sooner than originally planned – which is a significant positive as it will simultaneously contribute to cutting emissions and bring the country closer to achieving its net zero target by 2050.”

UK trailer startup helping British industry solve supply chain headaches and get back on the road

HM-D Trailers is getting British businesses on the road again by helping them overcome the crippling effects of supply chain issues we are hearing about daily.

This has all combined to create a backlog in production and deliveries with demand outstripping supply. It now costs more than ever to move goods and takes longer to bring products and components into the UK.

One solution to this comes in the simple form of road-trailers – the trusty workhorse of British commerce. These trailers are typically used by industry professionals from construction and ground-works, to farming and horticulture. Tiny house trailers can also be relied on to transport the likes of food kiosks, portable toilets, accommodation and portable shops.

While many trailer manufacturers have

Construction fleets’ fuel bills could increase by at least 50%

Fleets that have construction vehicles on their books could see their fuel bills double following a change in legislation that leaves businesses unable to take advantage of cheaper diesel, warns RAM Tracking, a leading vehicle tracking, dashcam and fleet management company.

themselves been hampered by supply chain issues – with customers having to wait until 2024 for their order, affecting trade today – UK company HM-D Trailers has avoided such delays. By locking in agreements with suppliers to maintain production it can offer immediately available trailers for all purposes. Its trailers are double-dip galvanised and come with a five year chassis warranty. The company also offers a buy-back scheme on old HM-D Trailers.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning

As of 1 April, this year, the government banned the use of red diesel in vehicles that are used for construction work, with the government changing the rules to help the UK meet its netzero ambitions.

Red diesel is a rebated form of diesel that can be used in a variety of off-road applications. Red dye is added to standard, white diesel to help inspectors identify if it is being used illegally and the rebate is used to offset

fuel duty – worth nearly 58p per litre – making a significant contribution to cost savings for construction & agricultural users.

The rule change could not have come at a worse time for fleets that use vehicles for construction work. Since the start of the year,

the average price of a litre of normal diesel has increased by 28.21p a litre.

For instance, a Hitachi ZX210 21-ton excavator has a 400-litre fuel tank capacity. On 3 January 2022, it would have cost around £360 to fill the tank with red diesel. As of 2 May 2022, it would cost roughly £700 to fill the same vehicle with normal diesel.

Nick McClellan (pictured), managing director at RAM Tracking, said, “It’s worth changing driver behaviour to minimise burning precious fuel, such as avoid idling for too long, keeping tyres pumped up, not going too fast or too slow, avoiding braking aggressively and better route optimisation.” www.ramtracking.com

Panasonic & Schneider Electric partner to expedite the future of heating

With consumer demand for heat pumps at an all-time high, Panasonic has partnered with Drayton by Schneider Electric to offer its Wiser room-by-room heating control system.

Seamlessly integrating with Panasonic Aquarea Air Source Heat Pumps and the Aquarea Smart Cloud and Service Cloud apps, the Wiser system provides an additional element of energy control and simple home automation. This new partnership will allow installers of Panasonic’s Aquarea air source heat pumps to offer their customers room-by-room heating

control by fitting Wiser with the Aquarea system. The combination of smart controls will help make homes as energy efficient as possible by bringing different electrical devices under the control of one app, helping homeowners to lower their bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

Wiser can be set up in the usual way with the Panasonic Aquarea heat pump, enabling installers to easily create multi-zone systems, where heating is easily remotely controlled room-by-room. Customers will be able to

monitor and easily adjust the heating in each room and via any web-enabled device, including Android and iOS applications and Internet browsers. The app will enable users to eliminate unnecessary heating thanks to Wiser’s smart modes. For example, activating Away Mode when a property is unoccupied helps to reduce energy consumption.

Sustainability: Considered steps rather than a leap of faith

Statistics from the Department for Business, Energy, & Industry Strategy (BEIS) defined more than 1,656,000 non-domestic buildings in England and Wales at the end of March 2020, the majority of which retain a dependence on fossil fuels. With the government’s Heating & Buildings Strategy report focused currently on new builds, with better fabric and heart pump implementation, the intent is to limit support for the construction of new gas grid connecting heating systems, effective this year.

However, that does not apply to these existing buildings with a gridgas connection. For the time being, if a business uses gas, then it can upgrade to new gas-fired appliances until 2035, with 100% hydrogenready options extending that window well into the 2040s based on current appliance lifespan.

So, gas-fired remains a valid option without concerns of breaching new regulations, so long as the new unit is more efficient than the unit being replaced. This provides a safety net while assessing new, more costly technology options prior to the 2035 deadline.

Recognising this need for more efficient gas-fired water heaters to bridge the technology gap for existing commercial properties, Adveco has developed two new ranges of direct-fired condensing water heaters – the AD and the ADplus.

Both ranges provide a compact, floor-standing design that is easy to introduce into an existing plant room. Heat is provided by a patented premix burners made of Fecralloy metal fibre fed by a consistent balanced air/gas ratio at each point of turndown.

The burner, with excellent functionality at extremely high temperatures exhibits a high modulation ratio resulting in improved combustion efficiency meaning the burner requires less gas. This condensing technology delivers up to 30% savings in fuel consumption, making it more cost-effective, while reducing emissions. For smaller on-demand needs, ADplus heats only what is what is necessary, with no ignition for smaller withdrawals providing considerable additional energy savings. Both AD and ADplus as a result exhibit ultra-low NOX (Class 6 appliance at 27mg/kWh) and CO emissions (19ppm).

The water heaters all feature either a single or multiple heat exchangers constructed from a tough, corrosive-resistant continuous

run of AISI 316Ti titanium-stabilised stainless steel. A perfect response to counter corrosion typically seen in high pressure circuits in soft, or softened water applications. Variants with multiple heat exchangers are automatically managed by the controller to ensure a perfect balance between water flow and supplied output. This also provides full temperature control and self-check maintenance functions, ensuring built-in system redundancy. It also enables AD and ADplus to be configured to operate in a cascade of up to eight water heaters for large scale applications.

The AD range, with 70-280 kW variants is conceived to be used with a buffer for high demand semi-instantaneous hot water applications as seen sports and leisure centres, hotels, spas, schools, stadia, and large commercial buildings. The ADplus range, with 70-140kW variants additionally incorporates an integrated 120-litre stainless steel water storage tank. This enables the ADplus to serve as a semistorage system, providing always available and instantaneous supply with quick recovery times for large-scale continuous provision of DHW.

As well as the continuity of service seen in individual units, the AD is perfect for integrating into large scale heat pumps systems seen for example in universities, schools, hotels, and hospitality. So long as there is an existing gas connection, AD can be used to provide a costeffective and easy to accommodate back-up for assured continuity of business-critical water heating. It is also well worth considering the implementation of solar thermal preheat for gas-fired systems if you wanted to make sustainability commitments with proven and genuinely renewable technology.

Housing Development Company of the Month

‘Next-Gen’ developments that are transforming the North East

service,” stated Martin.

BICD is also heavily involved in facilitating developments, buying land, researching local land and site opportunities, and most recently made a huge impact in Middlesbrough with its BOHO Village residential development.

In this issue of Building and Facilities News, we are pleased to announce Bright Ideas Consulting & Development as our Housing Development Company of the Month.

Currently run by Martin Hawthorne and Ray Priest, Bright Ideas Consulting & Development (BICD) specialise in three main core areas. To offer leadership on an interim or short-term basis to drive delivery of your development program and goals, to offer high level assistance on projects, programs, staffing, or strategic issues, and to produce homes for sale.

“Our consultancy offers advise to housing associations, developers, local authorities, and builders on the nature of development and how to go about it. We act as a bridge between the local authority, housing association world and the commercial world for construction and development. My 30 years’ experience working within local housing associations and development combined with Ray’s strong project management expertise ensures a high-quality professional

In partnership with Middlesbrough Council, and Middlesbrough Development Company, BICD was asked to provide the town with a housing development that would add value, quality, and a real opportunity to bring young working professionals into the area.

Throughout the project it was vitally important to BICD that the development reflected a low carbon lifestyle through heating, transport, and a comfortable working from home environment, alongside a good internet connectivity.

From the rental prices that had to match the comfort, size, and standards of the properties in order to justify their high value to the low carbon, BICD ensured all areas were covered. The quality connectivity combined with a digital infrastructure gave each home a 1gigabyte fully fibre optic connection from Virgin Media. From the initial planning application in April 2020, to receiving planning permission in November 2020, BICD started work in March 2021, which was less than 12 months after the initial concept was received.

Marking the beginning of a brand-new way of developing houses for the ‘next-gen’ in the North East, all 61 homes (22 houses and 45 apartments), are already pre-sold truly reflecting the current market demands within this area.

Using timber for future builds is crucial, explained

Martin. “Timber must be a key component for producing houses as it produces a sustainable cycle. Going forward, we want to use timber to produce modular factory-built houses that are of the highest specification and then delivered straight to site already built. They will be highly insulated and draft free, with an air tightness that is second to none. Built in Britain with fantastic green energy credentials, these will be placed in fantastic locations to help young people thrive.”

Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) can provide value to the homeowner and the utility by saving money and energy by providing a mixture of control, scheduling, and user information on the energy consumption. From solar panels, batteries and smart meters, HEMS is the future and with the technology and is already within our grasp, BICD will strive to make this a normal and standard procedure across all its developments going forward.

Beautiful fences that never need painting or treating?

HAHN fences – made from hanit® recycled plastic – deliver just that.

Whether you are looking for round top pales for a traditional design or square top pales to achieve a finish that will provide ultimate privacy from both sides of the fence, we have a variety of options to choose from. Available in black or brown & featuring an attractive grained timber-like appearance, your fence will remain maintenance free and looking good for many years to come.

Why hanit®?

It’s a material that outrivals wood, steel, stainless steel, new plastics & concrete. This is because it is more robust, lighter and more durable, and it also offers an excellent price-performance ratio.

Above all else, hanit® is highly versatile thanks to its product-specific composition. We find the right recipe

for every application and manufacture every one of our 2,000+ products in-house, producing 55,000 tonnes of finished product in our 211,000m² of manufacturing facilities that stretch across the UK, Germany and Canada.

For more information on the full HAHN Plastics range, call 0161 850 1965 or visit: www.hahnplastics.com

Perfect for all applications – domestic, leisure or commercial – our robust and modern fencing is eco-friendly and will remain rot and splinter free for life.

HAHN fences are made from 100% recycled plastic, using a specific blend of waste ingredients that guarantee a high quality, consistent product. We are so confident in the superiority of our products that we offer a 20 year warranty against defects in design and material.

Why choose hanit®?

The truth is hanit® is more expensive to buy than wood. However, wood will cost up to twice as much over the lifetime of a fence. Why? Because wood needs to be treated around every seven years and replaced every 10-15 years, if not sooner. So, if you add in the treatment and replacement costs needed for a wooden fence, within just 12 years hanit® becomes the cheaper product.

In fact, after 28 years, a hanit® fence is cheaper than traditional wood – by 50%. What’s more, our hanit® fencing will continue to provide excellent value for money for many more years to come.

ULTIRack+

Making sound visible

The world market leader in Acoustic Cameras, CAE Software and Systems GmbH, have setup the Coventry based Acoustic Camera UK Ltd to distribute their breakthrough technology to a wide range of industries in the UK and Ireland. They offer hire, purchase and support, as well as expert consultancy services using this technology, and CPD approved training.

to capture a screenshot or video, and emailing this to the machine manufacturer provides indisputable evidence of where improvements are required, making it faster and more effective in fixing the source of excessive noise.

One of the most advanced van Roof Racks on the market: the NEW and improved ULTIRack+

New to 2022, Van Guard Accessories has released the new and improved ULTIRack+, the first gallery rack of its kind to offer a game changing T-Slot rail system.

Our ULTIRack+ is a superior and smart heavy duty builder's van roof rack that both looks the part and does the job. Made from lightweight aluminium, it is strong, built to last and fuel efficient.

The ULTIRack+ is a large gallery style van roof rack and it's perfect for carrying wide loads. Unlike our roof bars, the ULTIRack+ van roof rack includes built-up side channels making it a firm favourite among those looking to quickly load and unload items on their van's roof.

Unlike the ULTIRack, the ULTIRack+ has the innovative T-Slot rail system. This allows for the attachment of load stops and eye bolts, enabling van owners unparalleled tie down, load restraint and accessorising capabilities.

Whether the van is to be used for work or play, the ULTIRack+ stylishly delivers absolutely every feature needed to get the job done.

“The ULTIRack+ is an upgrade to the predecessor. Although it inherits many of the ULTIRack’s features, including the sleek aluminium alloy design, and full width rear roller, it now also includes the ingenious T-Slot rail system, similar to our ULTIBar roof bars,” comments Amy Butterworth, Van Guard’s Marketing Coordinator.

Combining strength and style: the NEW ULTILadder

Van Guard Accessories has designed a heavy duty and hard-wearing solution to easily access the roof of vans.

Combining both strength and style, the ULTILadder provides a modern and bespoke solution for easily accessing the roof of the van.

The ULTILadder has been designed by expert engineers who have studied the different makes & models of vans on the marketplace to create rear door ladders that are bespoke to the van. An upgrade to their current rear door ladder offering, the brackets have been designed to sit in line with the curvature of the van. With brackets made from steel, they ensure the ladder can hold a weight of 140kg.

Constructed from lightweight yet robust anodised aluminium, the ULTILadder is a strong, heavy-duty, and hard-wearing rear door ladder. The expert design allows for quick and easy installation, with a fitting time of only 20 minutes. It is the fastest rear door ladder fitting on the market as it arrives preassembled.

“When we started to design the new ULTILadder, it was important to work with, and listen to our customers to ensure we were designing a product that meets their precise requirements,” comments Amy Butterworth, Van Guard’s Marketing Coordinator.

Is your washroom meeting the standards expected by your visitors? There is more to a good washroom than just hygiene.

Good design makes a critical difference to the cost of managing a washroom and to the user experience. However, the definition of what makes a ‘good design’ is never truly fixed. And as society changes the requirements of washroom best practice also needs to evolve.

In Dudley Industries’ latest guide they provide advice on designing washrooms taking into account the latest regulatory requirements, health and safety, cost, privacy and social changes.

Design assistance

These are common considerations but they are by no means the only ones that must be kept in mind when creating designs for new or refurbished washrooms. Individual designs will vary according to user numbers, available space, structural constraints and the purpose of the building as a whole.

Automotive application commission

HORIBA MIRA has commissioned Sensing Precision to provide airflow measurement devices within its new advanced automotive testing facilities in Nuneaton.

Founded in 1946, HORIBA MIRA is a UK-based global provider of automotive engineering, research, and validation and verification services.

HORIBA MIRA had to overcome significant challenges with the application of its sensors, requiring accurate measurement of volumetric flow over a range of positive and negative temperatures coupled with long term durability requirements of the components was needed. Sensing Precision’s design team, with its years of industry leading expertise and knowledge, was able to provide valuable advice in response and recommended the installation of three of its Wilson Flowgrids for use on bench rigs for assessing performance of automotive heat pump and AC systems. These are designed to deliver accuracy in air pressure measurement of up to ±1%.

HORIBA MIRA was impressed with the service saying that “only Sensing Precision was able to give confident answers to” the key questions asked.

Project and procurement issues gave Sensing Precision a very short turnaround time to fulfil the requirements. Dr David Bridge, HORIBA MIRA’s chief engineer, commented, “Thankfully, Sensing Precision reacted immediately and made all possible preparations in parallel with the order.” The Wilson Flowgrids were produced and delivered quickly to meet the build requirements of the new test facility. www.sensing-precision.com

SeaShield 2000FD™ System selected for protection

Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd’s SeaShield 2000FD™ System was recently specified for the protection of 31 jetty piles at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) station in Padstow, Cornwall.

The existing epoxy coating on the piles had begun to fail due to its length of time in service and abrasion caused by exposure to the local marine environment.

The complete coverage of each pile required the installation team from PSJ Marine Services to work at height, from the beach, and subsea to fully protect the 16 piles of 762mm diameter
