GIRL OF THE MONTH: SHAMI OSHUN Innovation. Creativity. Passion. Those are all the components that make the following artist stand out from the crowd. Meet the rising star that’s causing quite a stir on social media with her intricate designs that fuse technology and fashion. Teaching herself how to 3D print last year, Shami Oshun proudly owns the title of being the youngest person to 3D print fashion. After obsessing over her stunning work, I decided to interview this wonderful spirit to talk all things fashion, inspiration and why black girls in tech are important. Name: Shami Oshun Location: Bay Area, California Age: 18 Occupation: Designer

Q: How would you describe your personal style? Shami: My personal style is colorful and unique with intent. Q: When did you start designing and why? Shami: Started hand sewing designs when I was 6 then with a sewing machine at 8. I was inspired by fashionable people in my family. Q: Who and what are your favourite sources of inspiration? Shami: My Spring Collection (Garden Collection) is inspired by my childhood. I take a lot of inspiration from memories and feelings. Q: What made you decide to pursue a career in fashion? Shami: It made me happy. Q: Describe the process of 3D printing. What made you gravitate towards it? Shami: In the simplest way possible.. First I design what I want the machine to print on a program called fusion 360. Then it’s transferred through a program that the 3D printer reads. Once I adjust the settings the printer does most of the work. Since the 3D printer I had access too was small I had to print the pieces out in parts. I always had ideas that didn’t seem possible with fabric. I believe 3D printing allowed me to combine my my style of painting with fashion in a unconventional way. Q: I read in an interview (British Vogue) that you would create with pieces of fabric your father brought over from Uganda at a very young age. Would you say that you have a special connection with that country? Shami: I never went there. But after alot of sad series of events I wasn’t going to school very often. When my dad came back from a trip to Uganda he brought me this beautiful fabric. One day when I was home from school I got inspired by the fabric to put my time towards something positive.

Q: Are your family and friends supportive of your creative dreams? Shami: Everyone is very supportive. It wouldn’t be possible without my family and friends constant help. Q: What is it like running a business at 18? Shami: It’s so much fun because I know I am doing what I love. But this also means working everyday so I miss out on some parts of being 18. Q: Where would you like your career in fashion to lead you? Shami: Shami Oshun will be a major fashion house. Q: Lastly, what message do you want to send to young black girls who want to explore a future in tech and fashion? Shami: The world needs you.

MODEL OF THE MONTH Inspired by MJ, Iman & Namoi... this model is slowly taking over the fashion industry. learn about Kierra Monique, a 25-year-old model from Memphis, TN who is bound to shake things up in the modeling industry.

BAHI |  FEBRUARY 2018

What's your name? Kierra Monique Age? I’m 25. Profession & why? I’m a freelance model, really I should consider myself an artist. I do makeup, a little bit of creative directing, I draw, but in the end, I always find myself focused more so on developing my modeling. I’ve always had this thing for the fashion industry, esp. the models of the 80s and 90s. Naomi Campbell in Michael Jackson’s Keep It In The Closet, Iman in Remember the Time... looking at them, I tended to see myself.

BAHI   |  FEBRUARY 2018

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? 5 years from now? Well, I see myself established in the modeling industry to a level where I can truly give back. I’ve had this dream of opening up my own development agency that provides a platform to artists(artist of color esp.). I want to provide the space for networking, to speak to business owners, like yourself, and get an understanding of how to operate successfully without conforming to what society deems necessary to make it. Any advice you would like to offer? You are your biggest selling point. No one could ever do anything the way you do. In order for you to understand and believe that.... spend time focusing on getting to know yourself.
